r1 because of tedious people here who can't stand old threads being bumped, we must start new threads. Not optimal for long term discussions like music from the 90s

Left Eyes was the only one who actually sang. They used ghost singers for the rest. Left Eyes was super funny.

The only thing anyone needs to know is that Left Eye was the talent and creative nucleus of the group, and that when she was gone, so was the TLC we all knew and loved. All one has to do is listen to their 2017 “comeback” record as a duo to see what Left Eye brought to the table. The difference between songs like “Waterfalls” and “Red Light Special” and songs like “Way Back” and “Haters” is shocking. RIP Lisa, gone way too soon. Check out the other group she founded, Blaque, for more excellent 90’s RnB.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 23, 2022 1:21 AM |
They weren't great singers, but a lot of the singles were fun.
I hate Waterfalls though. Red Light Special from the same album was a lot better. Not that you can't like or dislike both.

TLC is my favorite network, especially Dr Pimple Popper.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 23, 2022 1:40 AM |
There’s video from Left Eye’s car crash, her friend was filming from the backseat. All the passengers lived, only Lisa died. The video cuts out before the vehicle rolls or anything graphic happens, but it’s so so eerie. It really spooked me out when I saw it years ago on a Behind the Music or whatever program showed it.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 23, 2022 1:50 AM |
Whew gurl, you Left Eye stans (r14) really need to get a hold of yourselves. Lisa Lopes, god rest her soul 20 years on, was talented but she would've never made it back then as a solo artist. She was too volatile. And of course a crowd funded album in 2017 is not going to sound as good as CrazySexyCool, a classic 90s album? Please stop being ridiculous.
TLC was the collective effort of many creative people in the music business coming together in the 90s, LA Reid, Babyface, Dallas Austin, Jermaine Dupri, Pebbles, etc. The group members each carried their weight and they were like sisters. It would never be the same with one of them gone forever.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 23, 2022 1:54 AM |
I heard that when they found her her left eye was where her right eye ought to have been.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 23, 2022 2:09 AM |
Yeah according to Wikipedia, the EMTs found her with “open cerebral trauma”, so it sounds like she got the Jayne Mansfield special. Sad and terrifying really, she wasn’t driving drunk or anything. She was in the Honduras on a humanitarian mission, about to return home for goodness sake.
I was a lot more bummed out back in those days by Aaliyah’s death, but Left Eye is just as sympathetic and maybe more tragic in hindsight.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 23, 2022 2:29 AM |
Debra Killings was the real singer for TLC. Before Chilli they had some other chick. Soup, dumpling, Margot Olavarria. I forget her name.
Pebbles really screwed them over out of royalties.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 23, 2022 2:36 AM |
Sorry but I agree, Left Eye WAS the talented one. Sure she was chaotic and unpredictable, but she was a creative force when reigned in. No one is suggesting she would have been an outstanding solo artist, but she did bring more to TLC than the other two, who basically could have been replaced by anyone.
And the poster above is correct, the duo album WAS horrendous. Who cares if it was “crowd funded,” TLC are music industry icons and it was an embarrassing, cheap sounding flop. Lots of other legacy artists manage to come back with decent material. Even En Vogue did a better comeback record. They just couldn’t pull it off without Left Eye.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 23, 2022 10:46 AM |
Lisa had a real eye for visuals and aesthetics. I think part of the reason TLC never felt the same is because in addition to the music, she contributed the most to their unique look and cool vibe. TBoz and Chilli seem pretty boring tbh. Chilli is beautiful but she has no ambition and is a jesus freak.

CrazySexyCool was met with critical acclaim and commercial success, peaking at number three on the Billboard 200, where it spent over two years. It has been certified 12-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), making TLC the first girl group in history to be awarded diamond status. CrazySexyCool has since sold over 15 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling album by an American girl group. The album has since been featured on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and was listed as a "New Classic" by Entertainment Weekly in 2008.

that t v movie did them no favors - they don't come off well in it. their first two albums were great - Fan Mail not so much. that said they really aren't very musically talented- their hits were written by pros

I started this thread 150 years ago and it's MINE !!!!!
Fuck that.
I loved TLC. Back when I still watched MTV and prior to Left Eye's death, they had a documentary about them that was enlightening about how the music industry still fucks over artists and how even world-class acts like TLC get fucked over.

Again, I have no idea what alternate reality some of you people are living in. r28 their 2013 TV biopic got huge ratings and other networks like Lifetime started cranking out biopics for black artists. The only person who didn't come off well in that movie was Pebbles
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 24, 2022 3:36 AM |
Left Eyes was was awesome. Black girl left us way too soon.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 25, 2022 12:54 AM |
Some say her death was faked to escape the industry. She just adopted an older girl and was open about her disgust at the entertaining business especially the paparazzi I. She had a very public breakdown in the 90s , went missing for a week and was becoming more vocal about her desire to stop being in the public eye. She went to Honduras on a charity mission, the someone in the car was shooting a video and oddly it ends before the car crash which kills only Lisa Left Eye Lopes. In a foreign country. No one’s ever asked whatever happened to her daughter.

I like Left Eye but I don't she wrote those big hits, just the raps on the songs that had raps, and she didn't sing on them either, so not sure how you are saying she was the creative force.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 25, 2022 4:21 AM |
R34 because she had style. Swag. She contributed the most to their look, which was a huge part of their appeal and success. She was hands on with producers and helped guide the group’s overall sound. She was adamant about not going too pop or mainstream and was known for detesting parts of the Fanmail album, and for good reason. Look at the group she founded - Blaque - for an example of her creativity. Her genius was in her visual language and knack for bringing out the best in collaborators.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 25, 2022 4:45 AM |
Oh, and behind the scenes she was like a creative director, and was responsible for some of their best video treatments.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 25, 2022 4:47 AM |
OK but she didn't write the songs or sing on most of them.
Pebbles claimed doing all the stuff yo just said early on, which clearly was part of their success, but the songs and the vocals were not exactly irrelevant.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 25, 2022 5:10 AM |
True r37 but the group would be functionally the same if you removed TBoz and Chilli and replaced them with any other two wannabe singers. TBoz maybe less so because her tone is unique and special, but still. It would not be the same without Left Eye, as we’ve all sadly seen for the past 20 years. Pebbles likes to run her mouth and take credit for their success, but she signed them as an intact group with a fully formed identity and didn’t do anything but connect them with a few producers and then rob them blind.

No she completed the group with Chili.
And she created their original look.
If not Pebbles they would not exist.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 25, 2022 5:16 AM |
She absolutely did not create their look r39. TLC started as Left Eye, TBoz and another young woman - Crystal Jones - and were already formed and working with Jermaine Dupri before Pebbles signed them. TLC stood for TBoz, Left Eye and Crystal. Crystal Jones had very valid concerns about the exploitative record contract offered by Pebbles, and was so summarily dismissed and replaced by Chilli, who had been working as a backup dancer for LaFace Records. Now I like Chilli, she was a beautiful girl and a great dancer, but she contributed nothing to the group creatively and was essentially window dressing. She could have been anyone.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 25, 2022 5:23 AM |
None of the girls really sang. Just Left Eyes sang a few cheesy raps. The other two were unneeded and irrelevant.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 25, 2022 1:31 PM |
Wow, Left Eye stans really stunk up the place. The group’s success is owed to its members. It was the chemistry of all three that clicked. I don’t know what personal vendetta you have against Tboz and Chili, but you are giving off strong hater vibes. So either enjoy the music or shut the fuck up.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 25, 2022 4:31 PM |
R42 and you are giving BPD off their meds aggressive vibes. All three ladies were terrific and worked together as a unit beautifully. I already mentioned how special I find TBoz’s tone. I was merely pointing out that if one had to pick, Left Eye was the least “disposable” and the most integral to the band’s DNA. With Chilli obviously being the easiest to replace.
I think their output post-Left Eye and recent material says it all. Being realistic doesn’t mean you’re a rabid ”stan.”
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 25, 2022 11:00 PM |
r42 said it in a nutshell. The group worked because they each brought something to the table and you could genuinely tell they loved each other. It wasn't disjointed like Destiny's Child. TBoz was the root of their sound, you knew it was their song when you heard her. Her vocals fit the laid back 90s tomboy thing that was happening at that time, like Aaliyah. Lisa was the lyricist and kept them in headlines, and Chili gave them real sex appeal. It was the perfect combination.
They also had unwavering confidence and would not let the industry push them over. It was unheard of for girls to do what they did and they still came back strong.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | April 25, 2022 11:11 PM |
R44 then how do you explain the disastrous “comeback” album where those two fleeced their fans on Kickstarter? Taking a million dollars and delivering a cheap, subpar product that tarnished their legacy.
Face it R43 is right Left Eye was the shit and MADE the other two interesting. TBoz had the right voice, Chilli was hot blah blah whatever. They were puppets. There’s a reason Left Eye was always the one talking in interviews. She wouldn’t have put up with that tragic Kickstarter nonsense.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | April 25, 2022 11:17 PM |
r44 didn't I just say they worked perfect for the 90s???? That album you are talking about came eons after their heyday, were you expecting it to chart almost 20 years after No Scrubs? Get real.
Im just glad that T-Boz is even still alive. Her performing and just living at 50 years old is a freaking miracle, she's been on death's doorstep many times and she comes back to her fans like nothing happened each time. They had their moment in the sun and I appreciate them for making the music I listened to growing up, even if they never have another hit.
Don't reply cause I'm done with your ass!
by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 25, 2022 11:32 PM |
The crowdfunding thing was highly suspect. They made a fortune - much, much more than their original goal if memory serves - and then didn’t deliver on any of their promises (but kept the $$ of course). A couple years later, after the fans started berating them on social media, a cheap tinny sounding collection of demos materialized , all done in a hurry with one producer, released under the pretense that this was the big “comeback” album they’d been promising all along. Lol

Just want to make clear R45 isn’t me. Like I said, I do think all three members worked beautifully as a unit and were integral (to varying degrees) to TLC’s success.
And yes, all the material post-3D (Left Eye did have some input on 3D before she passed) was subpar, to say the least.

T-Boz has sickle cell anemia and she had a brain tumor a few years back. She's a walking miracle. Surgeons refused to operate on her in regard to her brain tumor and she had to search for one who would take her as a patient what for her sickle cell anemia. Like I say she's a walking miracle. Leave her be. Rare alto she has.
Chili alright. She always had lovely hair and a great figure but she's dull to me. She can sing on key within her little range well enough. Dull.
Left Eye would have gotten into acting. She was charismatic as heck. Knew how to draw very well and design clothing. Heck, she'd probably have a couple of NFT's she designed herself if she was still with us.

Went to a TLC concert during the CrazySexyCool era. They were great, Chili could really move but your eyes definitely gravitated to Lisa. She had a lot of charisma on stage, more than the other two but they all contributed something unique. I bought a T-shirt in the parking lot on the way out of the show, found out last year it’s worth like $2k now. So that was fun.
