Fears surging crime in New York could ‘frighten away’ desperately needed tourists

The bashing of a pop star on a New York street has highlighted a huge issue facing the city where a cop has quipped that “only Central Park squirrels are safe”.

British singer Tom Grennan was hospitalized after an “unprovoked attack and robbery” outside a New York City bar following a performance this week, his manager said.

According to DL, NYers hate tourists, so this is probably a good thing.

a 3rd world country in the making!

by Anonymousreply 3April 22, 2022 10:36 PM

Americans (outside of the people who continue to choose to live in NYC) are understanding the increasing danger that exists in NYC, but my concern is that foreigners may not be aware of how badly things are deteriorating in the city. The U.S. government should issue a travel warning to visitors coming to the U.S.

We have had these situations before, like when a foreign couple didn’t realize it was dangerous to sleep in their car at a deserted highway rest stop, or when foreigners would take a wrong turn from the Miami airport and drive through dangerous neighborhoods. Foreigners don’t have the same knowledge that Americans have about where it is very unsafe to be in this country. Foreign DLers visiting the U.S. should ask if certain areas are safe or not when planning a trip here.

Lol R4 get a life.

by Anonymousreply 5April 22, 2022 10:38 PM

Another Russian cutout, here to spread fear and say that America is falling apart.

Crime is still below what it was in the 70s and 80s by orders of magnitude.

by Anonymousreply 6April 22, 2022 10:39 PM

Someone needs to do something about Miss Grennan's hair.

by Anonymousreply 7April 22, 2022 10:42 PM

Crime statistics by capita are going to hide increases in crime if the population grows more rapidly than the number of crimes.

New York City is the hellhole of this world. I urge New Yorkers to relocate and help other cities in your nation prosper.

by Anonymousreply 13April 22, 2022 11:22 PM

R2 tourism provides $60B in tax revenue and provides jobs in restaurants, theaters, hotels, and small businesses and that combined with a work force that would prefer to remain remote is a big loss

by Anonymousreply 16April 22, 2022 11:30 PM

Ch. 4 news in NYC just reported he was outside a bar on Bleecker Street between 3:30am and 4am.

I've been in NYC for more than 20 years, and it's always been good practice not to hang out on the street in the middle of the night. And to keep your wits about you and not look drunk or guard-down if you have to walk around at that hour. Muggers have always been looking for easy marks stumbling away from bars, and he probably was one.

by Anonymousreply 17April 22, 2022 11:32 PM

I'm reminded of an episode of THE GOLDEN GIRLS when Blanche gets engaged and is all giddy about honeymooning in NYC Then she stops suddenly and says rather ominously, "I just hope I don't get murdered." This was when NYC was a shithole -- before the big cleanup in the '90s -- but it looks like it's reverting to that state. smh

by Anonymousreply 18April 22, 2022 11:33 PM

Racist deplorable R12 needs to be permanently exiled from this forum.

by Anonymousreply 19April 22, 2022 11:36 PM

Yes, crime in NYC has skyrocketed... all the way back to 2019 levels which were then historic lows.

NYPD is so overwhelmed with the crime surge that their #1 priority is... going after the homeless and their advocates.

Gun Violence by State

The table below presents information from 24/7 Wall Street's analysis of gun violence by state. This information is a few years old; however, it gives a good idea of gun violence in each state per 100K.

Here are the 10 states with the highest rates of violence:

Alaska (24.5)

Alabama (22.9)

Montana (22.5)

Louisiana (21.7)

Mississippi (21.5)

Missouri (21.5)

Arkansas (20.3)

Wyoming (18.8)

West Virginia (18.6)

New Mexico (18.5)

Same with S.F. I have seen tourists in fear of the horror more than once. It aint Disneyland either. I was just assaulted for not giving some begging druggie money. He threw a cut of coffee he just begged off somebody at me. A couple months ago I was walking with my grandad he reluctantly paid some guy a dollar so he wouldn't get assaulted too. He's 89 years old and the looser was gonna assault him.

Only shootings were down, by a mere 1 per cent, according to New York Police Department (NYPD) data.

by Anonymousreply 36April 23, 2022 12:08 AM

R5 you get a life.

R4 is dead on. Euros live in these safe societies and don't realize how dangerous it is here when they come as tourists. And they also do things like stay in rooms in strangers houses to save money. DUH. Not smart.

Bullshit.

You know very well that violent crime in the major Euro cities is a fraction of what it is in the US.

In 2019, Italy had 308 murders. In a country of 60 million people.

In 2019 NYC had 318 murders. In a city of 8 million people.

R69 after last week with the worst assault in the history of NYCs subway system will that still be true as assaults have risen in the last 2 months. My office in Midtown has been on remote since December and no one who relies on the subway to get to work wants to return. It's no longer about COVID/Omicron

by Anonymousreply 72April 23, 2022 1:30 AM

I'm in Queens and won't go near a subway or the city. Anyone denying the increase in crime doesn't live anywhere near here. the Asian community is being slaughtered by blacks, and the Jews are a close second to it. No one wants to say the truth. Nearly all of the killing, assaults, subway shoving, shooting, theft, all crime, is being done by blacks. I'm not a racist, but as a NY'er, this is the truth. Again, I'm staying over here in Queens.

No, crime is not back to 1970's levels in city yet, but perception shapes people's reality. When you hear of someone going into subway system and popping off rounds, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

by Anonymousreply 126April 23, 2022 11:46 AM

Bump.

by Anonymousreply 127April 23, 2022 12:31 PM

City streets don't have much pity...

by Anonymousreply 128April 23, 2022 12:33 PM

That awful tik tok poodle hair. It makes me want to punch him as well.

by Anonymousreply 129April 23, 2022 12:34 PM

He was on a very busy street in the west village at 3am. I don't know why people are saying it is so dangerous?

by Anonymousreply 130April 23, 2022 12:35 PM

[quote]But what we are talking about here is the brutal, unprovoked attacks of NYC and California.

Why not also talk about the brutal unprovoked attacks in Dallas and Tampa and Little Rock and Oklahoma City and Shreveport and Omaha? Violent crime is up more in those parts of the country, surely you must be terrified. Oh wait, Rupert Murdoch has no financial interest in reporting that to you.

by Anonymousreply 131April 23, 2022 12:52 PM

Those of you who fled… where did you go? Serious question. I’m going to have to stay in commuting distance because my job is in the city and I’m too old to leave a job this secure in terms of pay and insurance - but I would consider moving out of Manhattan when my lease is up next year.

by Anonymousreply 132April 23, 2022 1:02 PM

Crime has gotten worse, but it’s still not that bad. I’m more alert on the subway and I’ll consider the appropriate means of travel home after a late night (who am I kidding, that’s almost entirely theoretical these days), but the average person going about their business isn’t worried about their safety on the street. I live in a non-doorman building in a just OK Manhattan neighborhood and one of my neighbors doesn’t lock his door all the time (yes, that’s foolhardy and odd).

The really issue NYC is facing is whether or not people will come back to the office full time. Huge office buildings are still at least half empty every day. Long term, that is not sustainable but many people seem to be in denial about it. NYC is facing a financial crisis, not a crime crisis. But when the city goes broke, crime will get worse.

Nobody is refusing to return to the office because they are scared of crime. The exception was the short period after the recent shooting mass shooting before the guy had been apprehended. People who commute into midtown or downtown are absolutely not worried about their personal safety during their commute. And we all did it after 9/11 when we really were scared for our personal safety. People just don’t want to commute because it makes a long day ridiculously long and it’s unpleasant. Not unsafe.

by Anonymousreply 133April 23, 2022 1:06 PM

Perhaps they'll provide him with a barber while he's in the hospital.

by Anonymousreply 134April 23, 2022 1:14 PM

[quote] Why not also talk about the brutal unprovoked attacks in Dallas and Tampa and Little Rock and Oklahoma City and Shreveport and Omaha?

You do realize, R131, the majority of those cities you just named have Dem mayors. So you're not helping your case.

by Anonymousreply 135April 23, 2022 1:20 PM

Cities have dem mayors, cities have lots of people, lots of people commit more crimes than the relatively fewer denizens of [pick your tiny backwater swamp hicktown shithole] where there is a Republican mayor. Nevertheless, per capita crimes are higher in red states and in rural red shitfuck farm towns.

by Anonymousreply 136April 23, 2022 1:25 PM

Why isn’t Ron Desantis stopping crime in Tampa though? When will Greg Abbott (metaphorically) get off his ass and do something about crime in Dallas? Your GOP governors are soft on crime.

by Anonymousreply 137April 23, 2022 1:28 PM

People don’t want to go back to the office because they are lazy bastards. They have got used to working/skiving at home and of course they want that to continue. They should be given an ultimatum, get back to the office or look for another job.

by Anonymousreply 138April 23, 2022 1:30 PM

He’s British. Thus I can’t help but assume he was the aggressor here…..

by Anonymousreply 139April 23, 2022 1:32 PM

Your only (or first) post, r138?

by Anonymousreply 140April 23, 2022 1:44 PM

It's so weird listening to Republicans who live in a different universe than the real one.

They're CONVINCED that every American city is a burned-out Mad-Max-esque hellscape and nothing - NOTHING - can convince them otherwise.

I hope all those NYC-haters on here have a good life living in Jacksonville, FL or Birmingham, AL or New Orleans.

by Anonymousreply 141April 23, 2022 1:50 PM

Just like it lured away tourists during the crack epidemic.

Except it didn’t and crime is much lower than it was then, lol.

Stay home, deplorable pussies. We’ve got plenty of oligarch tourists spending money while visiting their real estate investments.

by Anonymousreply 142April 23, 2022 1:58 PM

Fuck off, R101. I never said mentally ill people deserve to be homeless. They should be in institutions. Tax-paying, law-abiding citizens should not have to be dodging piles of shit and needles in the streets. Civil liberties should not trump public health and safety. An how am I racist exactly? Blacks make up 14% of the population yet commit around 50% of the violent crimes. That's not being racist, that's just cold, hard, disproportionate facts.

by Anonymousreply 143April 23, 2022 1:59 PM

R132 you need to go to NJ. But do not move anywhere in Essex County or you will just have the same problems with crime. You've been warned. And avoid much of Hudson and Passaic County as well.

Your best bet is Bergen or the nicer parts of Union.

And of course you'll need a car if you don't have one already.

by Anonymousreply 144April 23, 2022 2:01 PM

Stay away from Hillside, Irvington and of course Newark!!!!

And while Elizabeth is now up and coming (hipsters), avoid if you don't like crime!

by Anonymousreply 145April 23, 2022 2:05 PM

[quote]Blacks make up 14% of the population yet commit around 50% of the violent crimes. That's not being racist, that's just cold, hard, disproportionate facts.

What's your solution, r143?

by Anonymousreply 146April 23, 2022 2:06 PM

NYC is over. You need to go to Idaho, stay as far away from other humans as possible. Get completely off the grid, because that’s how Melinda Gates and George Soros are going to attempt to control you. If you can, build yourself an underground steel bunker and live off the land. Stockpile weapons and iodine tablets and desiccated food packets.

And of course you'll need a car if you don't have one already.

by Anonymousreply 147April 23, 2022 2:07 PM

I'm not R143. But I can answer. There is no solution. Although people are loathe to admit that.

100 years from now our descendants will be going round and round dealing with the same problem. If there is still a world then.

by Anonymousreply 148April 23, 2022 2:08 PM

100 years? We’ll be lucky if the world exists 10 years from now the way petty larceny rates are going in the Bronx.

by Anonymousreply 149April 23, 2022 2:11 PM

Thank you, r148, but I'm waiting for r143's answer.

by Anonymousreply 150April 23, 2022 2:14 PM

Wingnuts have been screaming NYC is "over" for decades. Meanwhile, this has been the reality for decades. Call me when any city actually reaches HALF of NYC's population.

America only has one problem.

by Anonymousreply 152April 23, 2022 2:26 PM

Yes, and it's called r152.

by Anonymousreply 153April 23, 2022 3:09 PM

R144 where in Bergen and Union?

by Anonymousreply 154April 23, 2022 3:21 PM

R55- Diversity is overrated.

by Anonymousreply 155April 23, 2022 3:25 PM

R106- The photo in upper left- I want his ASS.

by Anonymousreply 156April 23, 2022 3:30 PM

R155 - you're not even rated.

by Anonymousreply 157April 23, 2022 3:31 PM

R103 so why are so many offices like mine still working from home? Mask mandates are being lifted, vaccine cards are no longer required in many venues nor is testing, No one I know wants to return to the office especially if they rely on the subway to get to Manhattan or to Midtown from other parts of the city.

by Anonymousreply 158April 23, 2022 3:37 PM

R158- My father would take the train to Grand Central then a subway shuttle to times square then another train to 34th street. Then he would reverse this in the evening- SO GRUELING 5 days a week- he did this commute to the office until he was 91 years old.

by Anonymousreply 159April 23, 2022 3:41 PM

People don’t want to go back to work which causes crime and homeless to increase. Doomsday situation.

by Anonymousreply 160April 23, 2022 3:42 PM

and not taking a subway is longer, more expensive, more complicated and more prone to traffic delays R159

by Anonymousreply 161April 23, 2022 3:44 PM

Doomsday? Get a grip, toots.

by Anonymousreply 162April 23, 2022 3:47 PM

My neighborhood is fine.

by Anonymousreply 163April 23, 2022 3:50 PM

R21 not concerned with when it was worse it's awfully dangerous now. Do you take comfort in the fact that more people died from the Black Plague than from COVID?

by Anonymousreply 164April 23, 2022 4:03 PM

R163 Me thinks think the lady doth protest too much ! Do you ever leave your neighborhood?

by Anonymousreply 165April 23, 2022 4:08 PM

so all the californians moved to texas and the texans moved to new york?

by Anonymousreply 166April 23, 2022 4:11 PM

not only is getting to work a danger but the work itself has become dangerous as 2 delivery drivers were robbed and assaulted this week and 4 food vendors on the UWS were robbed at gunpoint.

NYC is like a beautiful woman.

by Anonymousreply 169April 23, 2022 4:22 PM

R146 maybe BLM should work with and in the black community for its betterment instead of buying multi-million dollar homes

by Anonymousreply 170April 23, 2022 4:30 PM

But per square mile R22 there is more crime in NYC

by Anonymousreply 171April 23, 2022 4:36 PM

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 172April 23, 2022 4:40 PM

So, how has BLM helped the black community? R172

by Anonymousreply 173April 23, 2022 4:43 PM

R160 it's also the loss of revenue from commuters. Restaurants, coffee shops, parking lots/garages, the MTA . . .PJ Clarks on the Eastside used to have people spilling out onto 3rd Avenue from 3pm-3am most days and now closes at 10pm

by Anonymousreply 174April 23, 2022 4:47 PM

r173, I asked for r143's solution to their:

[quote]An how am I racist exactly? Blacks make up 14% of the population yet commit around 50% of the violent crimes. That's not being racist, that's just cold, hard, disproportionate facts.

I still haven't gotten an answer...just criticisms of BLM.

by Anonymousreply 175April 23, 2022 4:51 PM

so R175 how has BLM helped the black community?

by Anonymousreply 176April 23, 2022 4:53 PM

That doesn't answer my question, r176...and you know it.

by Anonymousreply 177April 23, 2022 4:54 PM

I love any thread about NYC because whatever your point of view, almost everybody loses their shit. It is HUGELY entertaining!

by Anonymousreply 178April 23, 2022 5:00 PM

Wasn't this guy previously beaten up on the streets? What precipitates these beatings? Does his Irish temper contribute?

by Anonymousreply 179April 23, 2022 5:02 PM

R177 what about my question?

by Anonymousreply 180April 23, 2022 5:02 PM

Oh, silly little r180. Stop projecting *your* diversion. You keep answering my question with a question. That's not only diverting...it's trolling. Your answer, I can only assume, is "I have no solution, I use specious "facts/sources" for my arguments and...I'm racist."

by Anonymousreply 181April 23, 2022 5:09 PM

R181 why so angry? Accepting the fact that BLM is not buying expensive property, what have they been doing? Seems uncomplicated. Perhaps there is no answer.

by Anonymousreply 182April 23, 2022 5:12 PM

[quote] so why are so many offices like mine still working from home?

Because people hate their fucking co-workers and all the bullshit that goes with them.

by Anonymousreply 183April 23, 2022 5:15 PM

R178 I think it's New Yorkers losing their shit. They can't accept that fact that it's becoming a shithole and look to other states or times in the past when it was supposedly worse. NY is no longer the gay mecca it once was and is not the center of art or fashion as it was in the past.

by Anonymousreply 184April 23, 2022 5:16 PM

Why in the world would you read my reply as angry, r182? Don't be silly.

[quote]Blacks make up 14% of the population yet commit around 50% of the violent crimes. That's not being racist, that's just cold, hard, disproportionate facts.

Assuming your numbers are accurate, what's your solution? That's the question.

by Anonymousreply 185April 23, 2022 5:16 PM

R185 it's your tone

by Anonymousreply 186April 23, 2022 5:18 PM

[quote]...and is not the center of art or fashion as it was in the past

What *is* the center?

by Anonymousreply 187April 23, 2022 5:18 PM

When it comes to crime it is increasing everywhere. It is true many red states have higher crime rates than blue states, but the difference is it is spread out across those red states so it is noticed less by the people living there. It is more noticeable in NYC, L.A., and other cities because it is more geographically concentrated. It is also true that the crime rate in NYC, nor nationally, is not as high now as it has been in the past, but that doesn't matter. What matters is that it is rising again. Most people don't remember the crime in the 1980s they became used to the low crime periods of the first two decades of this century.

by Anonymousreply 188April 23, 2022 5:20 PM

Of course it is, r186, of course it is.

by Anonymousreply 189April 23, 2022 5:20 PM

R187 media. THE WORLD IS A GLOBAL VILLAGE NOW MORE THAN EVER

by Anonymousreply 190April 23, 2022 5:21 PM

R189 you have me confused with someone else and still haven't answered MY regarding what BLM has done to improve or help the black community. You obviously don't have an answer and become involved in pointless ossification not unlike BLM itself

by Anonymousreply 191April 23, 2022 5:23 PM

^ OBFUSCATION

by Anonymousreply 192April 23, 2022 5:26 PM

NYC, LA and SF are no longer the Meccas for gay people as well as urbane people like they used to be because second-tier American cities are no longer the backwater shitholes they used to be. If you're gay you can have a same-sex partner and even get married anywhere in the US. You can have a lucrative professional job, shop at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, live in a loft apartment or a fabulous condo, eat at upscale restaurants, do yoga and Pilates, and have all the other accoutrements of the lifestyle of the entitled white cunt you were born to be in Austin, Columbus, Fort Lauderdale, Portland, etc. etc. The world has changed so much, and it's no longer necessary to move to one of the three major liberal US cities to live the life you want.

by Anonymousreply 193April 23, 2022 5:27 PM

F193 I agree

by Anonymousreply 194April 23, 2022 5:43 PM

r194 lots of DLers are stuck in the past and just don't realize how radically things have changed. NYC is a great place, but the rest of the US has really caught up with lifestyle trends.

by Anonymousreply 195April 23, 2022 5:47 PM

[quote] An (sic) how am I racist exactly? Blacks make up 14% of the population yet commit around 50% of the violent crimes. That's not being racist, that's just cold, hard, disproportionate facts.

R143 you’re racist in that you’re not including the context that poverty has to play in this. People living in poverty commit more violent crime than those that don’t. It’s reality. For you to act like race is the significant factor and not allow for the role poverty has to play is….racist.

Also people suffering from mental illness should not necessarily be institutionalized, they should be able to access the care they need, whether that be in an institutional setting or not. You sound like a nightmare person.

by Anonymousreply 197April 23, 2022 6:05 PM

[quote]Also people suffering from mental illness should not necessarily be institutionalized, they should be able to access the care they need, whether that be in an institutional setting or not.

by Anonymousreply 198April 23, 2022 6:07 PM

If you're going to drag out statistics to attack black people, why not use them to attack peoplebased on gender....men make up 49% of the population but commit 90% of homicides

by Anonymousreply 199April 23, 2022 6:10 PM

R143, that is a fake statistic. For the majority of violent crimes in this country no one is arrested.

by Anonymousreply 209April 23, 2022 8:17 PM

R147 between NYC and Idaho there's a whole wide diverse world; Why make everything one extreme or the other?

by Anonymousreply 210April 23, 2022 8:31 PM

As a flyover tourists that DL loves to hate, I traveled to NYC prior to Christmas. In the tourist zones, there was a heavy police presence and I didn't feel unsafe. But I wasn't out stumbling around at 3:00 AM either. But NYC at Christmas was a little sadder last year than I remember in previous years: shuttered Midtown restaurants, fewer people on the streets and it least it *appeared* that they were more homeless slumped up on the side of the street. At night, you could see apartment buildings with maybe 2-4 units that appeared occupied. And I didn't ride the subway - I walked or took cabs.

NYC is an amazing, energetic city but I do fear that if commuters & the revenue they bring don't return at least at some level, it's going to turn very ugly for the remaining population and more of the city turns into "no go" zones that even the cops abandon

by Anonymousreply 211April 23, 2022 8:36 PM

"a cop has quipped that “only Central Park squirrels are safe”.

That's a lie. The squirrels are not safe.

by Anonymousreply 212April 23, 2022 8:43 PM

Squirrels = Death

by Anonymousreply 213April 23, 2022 8:44 PM

R208 people are born into poverty, they’re not born as criminals. A person living in poverty is more likely to resort to criminal behaviour in later life. I’m guessing you’re not a fan of any anti-poverty reforms either such as universal minimum wage, reparations, free third level education, or a massive tax overhaul either are you? Because if you’re not, then it’s kinda dumb to get all hot and bothered about poverty related crime.

by Anonymousreply 214April 23, 2022 8:44 PM

r214 there are plenty of non-black poor people in the US but their communities don't have a fraction of the violence and criminal behavior.

by Anonymousreply 227April 23, 2022 10:15 PM

Is it true though R226? There are a lot of poor people in the world and while they might do something like theft they don't usually resort to violent crime. That IS what we are talking about here, not pickpockets.

It is not poverty that causes this. It is people with poor impulse control who resort to violence to solve their perceived issues.

I hate both sides of the race crime debate.

1. People arguing that "black" people commit more crime are wrong because what they're really saying that people with increased melanin commit more crime, which is equivalent to saying people with red hair commit more crime: interesting if true but functionally useless.

2. The other side, when it's not bending over backwards to defend a position they don't have to because race isn't real, calls everyone a racist and thinks criminals = innocent. God help us!!

Crime is not a "race" thing it's an economic thing, you know, economics, which actually exists (although ironically is a science of social constructs, which is what race is!).

by Anonymousreply 237April 23, 2022 10:45 PM

by Anonymousreply 238April 23, 2022 10:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 239April 23, 2022 10:49 PM

Either native-born Americans are just more enlightened than these recent arrivals, or Americans have been programmed with racial blind spots and filters while growing up here that these other folks do not have.

Only one or the other can be true.

I think NYC isn't the problem, at least not the only problem. Road rage across the country has risen by 44% recently. There's videos of random citizens trying to run each other over and shoot each other over minor incidents. It's not happening in one place either, it's going on everywhere. Not sure if it's stress, coming out of covid, etc., But personally, I've been wondering if people became mentally ill, maybe from covid. It does cause brain decay in a significant % of people. Much like lead being linked to higher rates of violence.

I'm noticing a lot of anger simmering under the surface in people lately. Just a weird example -- took my partner in to see a new doctor. Holy shit were there so many weirdos. Crazy people in the waiting room, freaking out (at first, wrote that off as impatience), but then the nurse is going on and on about hating her coworkers and others.... Okay, so maybe coincidence... Doctor comes in and did 2 hours of angry sighs! Never seen anything like it. Just couldn't handle the computer annoyances, couldn't believe insurance wasn't popping up, etc. Guy was just pissed off at everything.

I have warned my loved ones to watch it out there. Don't get in any arguments and keep their heads down. People are running on a short fuse and sometimes becoming extremely violent.

by Anonymousreply 264April 24, 2022 12:33 AM

well road rage is caused by poverty too.

R274 Sutton Place is barely 5 full blocks, and some of the wealthiest mansions have a permanent police presence 24/7, right on their doorsteps, like in the example below on Google Maps. R183 Moreover sleeping an hour later and getting dressed and having breakfast during what would be commute time is a big plus. In addition, you are saving money on food, parking, gas, tolls and mass transportation. There are no worries about traffic, accidents, delays and inclement weather. And even if you're not feeling 100%. you are in the comfort of your home and when work is over you are already home. No one is late, there's less stress and a big savings on time and money.

by Anonymousreply 286April 24, 2022 11:31 AM

I think crime is likely to be bad wherever there is poverty and social alienation. Look at Rio. Look at any city on the African continent.

The reason it is so bad is America is a violent culture and the pathetic ease of access to guns (though wannabes in New York appear to be trying to enter via knives and machetes of late... so there's American ingenuity at work at least.)

There will always be a racial profile to it because in a majority of some size, some racial profile is going to be leading the pack.

So that it (appears) to be blacks in America seems to me neither here nor there.... that's a distinguishing feature but unrelated to the root causes. American blacks are not inherently more violent, they are inherently more alienated, excluded and poor, with all the parting gifts that provides.

You folks are always going to have it worse than a London or Paris or anywhere in the west because your poverty is more widely spread and entrenched and your social policy is more third world than first world.

by Anonymousreply 287April 24, 2022 12:12 PM

OK so now alienation is the cause of brutal, random attacks. Way to shift the goalpost.

by Anonymousreply 288April 24, 2022 12:43 PM

The person on here who keeps making excuses for these heinous crimes isn't getting many "likes".

by Anonymousreply 289April 24, 2022 12:44 PM

It's culture, not race, not poverty. If you systematically tell people that looting is okay, that theft is just you enacting your right to reparations and that even guns are part of the glorified thug life, that "sex work" is empowering, etc. etc.,... then that's what you get. The BLM website was a good mirror of this attitude at the beginning, before they toned it down. Marxist, with the aim of deconstructing society, it was advertised. It works.

by Anonymousreply 290April 24, 2022 12:51 PM

Yeah R290 and people were given generous stimulus payments, child tax care credits, and some people were able to stay rent free in their places for over a year. So clearly poverty isn't the issue.

by Anonymousreply 291April 24, 2022 12:53 PM

I wish the media would focus this issue on where it really resides, which is manhattan. My Queens neighborhood is chock a block with people, life, living, thrumming along, all apartments chock full of people living their lives to the absolute fullest, restaurants full, a feeling of safety everywhere and anywhere you go etc etc etc. It's like Manhattan except a shit fucking ton more people live here and it's so much safer.

Maybe not in oh so wonderful Manhattan, but out here in Queens (where a uuuuuge number of people live) there's a veritable shit ton of ugly people, so I agree with this statement wholeheartedly.

Whoever said above that you can't drive a car in New York has clearly not been here any long time because this city is the very definition of "car culture". There are millions of cars on the roads of New York; every street is packed with parked cars every street is packed with traffic, honking, etc.

I think one of the defining features of New York is that whatever extreme statement you can make about it, you can also reasonably claim that the complete total and polar opposite of that is also true.

by Anonymousreply 301April 24, 2022 1:18 PM

by Anonymousreply 303April 24, 2022 1:47 PM

[quote] You know when their cultures changes? When they entered the middle class

That doesn't explain the continued dominance of African-Americans in violent crime statistics. All black people are not poor, between 45-60% of them are classified as middle class, but middle class black people tend to live in the South. The violent crime problem, among black people, is the result of a small number of people in the black lower class, the majority of the black lower class are not criminals. Which is why it really isn't a racial thing, or even an economic one, it is an issue of the culture in the ghetto that captures people and will not let them escape, by concentrating poverty and leaving it to fester. The same is true for poor whites living in former mill villages across the South.

A great way to fix the problem of the ghettos is to not concentrate poverty in one place. Fuck NIMBY people and fuck the anti-gentrifiers, the poor need to be spread among the rest of society. We have to finally assimilate our native born poor fully into society, or they will destroy us. And, they should if we don't.

Nyers are getting fatter (and uglier) by the moment.

"In New York City, obesity is epidemic. More than half of adult New Yorkers have overweight (34%) or obesity (22%). "

"New York's diabetes epidemic: ▫ Approximately 1,717,067 people in New York, or 10.7% of the adult population, have diagnosed diabetes."

I worked at clinics in Wash H and east Brooklyn and I treated a lot of fat people with diabetes. Not so many were lookers. Half of NYers are obese but for the sheltered NYer who never leaves Manhattan below 125th, and doesn't associate with non whites, he clearly does not see any of this.

A delivery guy was shot and killed last night in my New York City neighborhood last night. This city is, from a purely objective standpoint, becoming much more dangerous. Now I have to worry about getting shot when I walk outside my formerly safe neighborhood, like this poor delivery guy?! Un fucking real. I'll bet whoever did this came from one of the shitty nearby neighborhoods like Jamaica or East New York, or from that cesspool known as the Bronx - most definitely NOT from Manhattan, because anyone who lives there think they're too good for Queens LOL.

Fuck you simpering Manhattan cunts (and I know that's where you all live) who feel the need to defend this city no matter what. I was born and raised in NYC, and I cannot wait to get the hell out. NYPD went $77 million over budget for overtime last year, the 2022 budget is a 50% increase over the Covid cuts, and the mayor keeps giving them fun non-crime related work like destroying homeless people's belongings, so the police should be quite thrilled to be out there catching criminals. Nope. Wrong again. I've been in this apartment since 2011 and talking about crime in NYC does not make one "racist." I've been here since '94 when I went to Columbia and have lived both here and in my native CT ever since. There has definitely been an increase in crime and general fuckery, you would actually have to be a recluse not to notice it. The UES is not as bad as other areas but Midtown and the UWS are not like they were just a few years ago.

What can be expected, though? This city is ridiculously expensive and in the US we have very little in the way of mental health care. Certainly no publicly funded mental health care because Americans are allergic to paying taxes to benefit the greater society. It's just going to get worse, I'm afraid, until we have a complete restructuring of society which may not happen for a long while.

There are places all over flyoverfuckistan where people have lunged and gotten aggressive when asked to put on a fucking mask.

by Anonymousreply 468May 4, 2022 4:29 AM

Totally agree R468. This uptick in violence is not happening in a vacuum and is not exclusive to New York.

As has been pointed out several times, NYC tourism has thrived even during significantly higher rates of violent crime, and there’s no sign it’s in any danger now.

I get that trolls will troll, but this repetition of nonsense is not working.

by Anonymousreply 474May 4, 2022 9:18 PM

take a look at the Times Square live cam and you'll see far fewer people in an area that was always very crowded. The difference is very noticeable to those who like me work in NY though I've been remote since Dec. 2021.

by Anonymousreply 475May 4, 2022 11:31 PM

When has NYC tourism thrived when there was high crime? Tourism has been fueled by the Chinese over the past 2 decades, as well as Europeans. I already pointed out the before the mid 90s, airfare across the pond was very expensive and few could afford it. And China did not have a sizable middle class until late 90s.

So let me know what years you thing tourism thrived prior to 2000?

[quote]Since 1991, domestic visitors to the City have more than tripled. However, the strongest decade of growth for domestic tourism was during the 1990s, when growth averaged about 7 percent per year.

Reminder: violent crime peaked in NYC in 1990/1, and while the decline began early in the decade, the BS coverage that falsely credited it all to Giuliani didn’t start til about 95 or 96. Despite that, the steep rise in tourism started even before Giuliano’s election.

R480 since 2016 I worked on W46th Street between 6th and Fifth Ave. I go by what I experience and see first-hand thank you. Pre-pandemic I use to walked through Times Square on a daily basis. Returning in Sept. 2021 on a hybrid schedule many businesses and restaurants had closed with many For Lease signs. A return to the office last month for1 day saw little change and very few people in Times Square despite that Omicron was over. Commuters provide a lot of revenue for the MTA, parking lots and garages and small businesses. How's everything in your mom's basement?

Concern about crime is a top polling issue across the country.

Tourism surged in NYC in 2021 despite all the same polls saying New Yorkers were worried about crime then too.

Covid was the threat to tourism, not crime. But the press launders GOP talking points so they're going to stick with that narrative no matter what the numbers say.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 493May 5, 2022 12:57 PM

Increasing crime is an important issue in NY. I feel like you can't have an honest discussion on this because you have extremes on one side who deny crime is an issue at all while on the other we have the wacked out fuck from Weehawken you would like you to think NY is a dystopian hellhole.

The city feels less safe then a few years ago and that's a big problem for those who actually live here. Deny that all you want, but it's reality.

by Anonymousreply 494May 5, 2022 1:03 PM

Went to a theatre at 10th Ave and 52nd streets the other day. That area looked like it did back when my grandparents lived there in the late 70's/ early 80's.

by Anonymousreply 495May 5, 2022 1:08 PM

^ It's not a matter of denying it. It's pushing back against a completely bullshit press narrative that they as usual picked right up from the GOP. Crime is a problem, crime is always a problem (remember Meghan McCain and her warzone Manhattan neighborhood?). But it's not usually as big a problem as hyped, and crime is not keeping tourists away. Tourism runs parallel to economic forces (how much money do I have to spend, what places have the things I'm interested in doing/seeing), not so much less directly tangible forces like crime (there's some vague chance I might be the victim of some degree of crime).

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 496May 5, 2022 1:11 PM

And if you don't believe that, just look at the way the same conservatives who screech about CRIME! keeping tourists out of NYC react when you tell them the American gun problem depresses international tourism rates. "Not uh! Look at the numbers, plenty of people still come here, who cares!"

by Anonymousreply 497May 5, 2022 1:15 PM

I disagree. It is a big problem in NY, bigger then in recent years. It was a big issue during the mayoral primary so obviously most NYers agree.

The city feels tense and unsafe (especially on the subway). And shop lifting is so rampant my local Duane Reade has half the store locked up. You can't even buy toothpaste without needing a clerk to open up the cabinet. And I live on the UES, one of the 'safer' neighborhoods.

by Anonymousreply 498May 5, 2022 1:17 PM

The violent robberies of bodegas and small businesses along with the looting of Walgreen's and CVS and the smash and grabs of jewelry stores . . .has caused stores to close and certainly doesn't encourage anyone to open up a business in NYC

by Anonymousreply 499May 5, 2022 2:32 PM

Yes, we know you disagree. And you’ll keep insisting even as the tourists keep showing up.

by Anonymousreply 500May 5, 2022 2:46 PM

I don't give a shit if tourists do or don't show up. I care about quality of life and my safety.

by Anonymousreply 501May 5, 2022 2:48 PM

Maybe the question is how bad does it have to get for people in NYC to admit that there is a problem. It would be helpful if people living in NYC could fill-in the statement “”If _______, then I would say NYC has a high crime problem.”

by Anonymousreply 502May 5, 2022 2:48 PM

Discounting the defensive position of some in this thread who like to pretend everything is unicorn and puppies here, everybody I know in NYC *is* concerned about rising crime.

by Anonymousreply 503May 5, 2022 2:51 PM

It's all about *you*, r501.

by Anonymousreply 504May 5, 2022 2:53 PM

R494 you don't need me I'm only a poster on DL after all for people to know how dangerous NY has become as New Yorkers themselves as polls have demonstrated feel less safe in their own city. See WPIX, CBS, ABC News, 1010 WINS, AMNY . . .

by Anonymousreply 505May 5, 2022 2:53 PM

You probably don't even live in NYC, R504. Keep living in denial.

by Anonymousreply 506May 5, 2022 2:55 PM

What's your solution, r505?

by Anonymousreply 507May 5, 2022 2:55 PM

R507 more police on subways and make sure the cameras are working, end the' catch and release' as many crimes in 2022 were committed by repeat offenders would be a good start.

by Anonymousreply 508May 5, 2022 3:00 PM

and R507 acknowledging that there is a problem and realizing that if unchecked it will only get worse is also a step in the right direction and no one really cares if it was worse 30 or 40 years ago since most people aren't old enough to remember.

by Anonymousreply 509May 5, 2022 3:15 PM

There is no solution, and without legal abortion, expect to see crime rates go up. Unwanted children born in poverty to poor women with few social supports are more likely to grow up and exhibit antisocial behaviors. Because it is both nature and nurture that leads to ASPD.

by Anonymousreply 547June 25, 2022 7:05 PM

Unfortunately, R547 billionaires and foreign investors are not the lifeblood of most New York businesses. They are not year-round residences and many restaurants, stores; hotels, parking garages, parking lots and the MTA depend on tourism and daily commuters for their revenue and many of those venues provide jobs as well. Several Broadway shows have already announced closings for the summer which was traditionally a very busy time for Broadway and as many offices remain on remote there is a loss of revenue with much office space unused and unleased and the vast majority of people I work with prefer to remain remote especially those who need to take the subway to get to work.

Woman with baby stroller shot dead in UES. New Yuck!

by Anonymousreply 556June 30, 2022 2:52 AM

Frustrated NYC detectives leaving ‘insane’ NYPD, have ‘had enough’

More than 100 NYPD detectives have retired in June — and another 75 plan to put their papers in next month — as many become frustrated by revolving-door justice and rules that hamstring them in the Big Apple, officials and detectives told The Post.

“That’s going to have a major impact on investigating crimes,” Detectives Endowment Association president Paul DiGiacomo said. “The detective squads are down now as we speak and are investigating more cases. It’s going to have an impact on public safety.”

So far this year, 250 detectives have retired, leaving the total number at about 5,600, which is nearly 2,000 less than two decades ago.

There were 794 detective retirements during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 — and that number dropped down to 395 in 2021. Sources said 100 retirements in just one month is a large number for the NYPD.

The Post also reported earlier this month that cops in general were leaving the force in record numbers.

Caputo, who is leaving after 18 years in the NYPD. “The no-bail law was a big thing with me,” he said. “It’s not even really crimefighting anymore. You arrest somebody for assault 2 with a weapon and then the person is back at the precinct getting his property the next day. They’re not locking anyone up, even those with records. Pay your debt to society. You broke the law.”

“The criminals are not being prosecuted and they’re not being held accountable,” said the sleuth with 500 career arrests.

“It’s insane,” he said. “I feel bad for the businesses. You can even have private security and they just go in there and assault them. They assault police. It really sucks. But I don’t see any politician really solving the problem.”

The city has seen a drop in murders and shootings so far this year over last, by about 12%, but other major crimes — like grand larceny, robberies and burglaries — have experienced steep increases, putting more pressure on investigators, NYPD data show.

Criminal oligarchs form LLCs, limited liability corporations. They all get together, make shell companies, hire someone to “represent” the shell company. Then the shell companies all form a bunch of LLCs and buy up small buildings and middle class housing. They rip it all out, replace with massive, high end buildings and rent out space to their other corporations. In resort areas they pull down middle c,ass houses and rep,ace with attached wood & glass cubes. Each “bedroom” is a suite with couches, bed, microwave, fridge, bath room. Rent each bedroom suite out via Air BnB every weekend.

Put tours together - stay in Manhattan/Brooklyn during the week, spend rest of time in Hamptons! Round trip airfare includes coupons for on-site massage!

People like Trumps & Kushners salivate at the idea of closing small businesses, knocking down buildings, putting up massive structures and selling to Russians, Chinese, Saudis, Omanis, Kuwaitis, Kazakhs Turks, Texas oil men. All non-Americans who buy from them get an E5 investors visa & get on track to citizenship, like Musk and Thiel.

so, small businesses and corporations should shoulder the burden and carry on as usual despite increased crime, the difficulty in finding employees and a workforce that no longer sees the necessity of being in the office five days a week as they save money and time working remotely

R582 tourists and office workers don't care how violent other cities are NYC is dangerous enough

by Anonymousreply 583July 1, 2022 2:26 AM

Streets packed

Restaurants packed

Broadway shows packed

Yeah, it's a real ghost town!

by Anonymousreply 584July 1, 2022 2:30 AM

Certainly not a ghost townR584 How could a city with 8 million residents be a ghost town? But many venues close early and there are a lot of for lease signs all over town. Chelsea the Village, the East Village are comparatively empty to what they were before the pandemic. Many restaurants and businesses that closed during the pandemic have never come back and several Broadway shows have announced closings for June, July and August normally a very busy time for Broadway

by Anonymousreply 585July 1, 2022 2:40 AM

R582 this is not about hard crimes per capita, it's the "surging" crimes in recent years. Do other cities like St. Louis or Baltimore have a 41% increase on robberies, 21% on assaults or 40% jump on burglaries? I doubt it, but NYC has!

Sorry but soon there will be a murder a day in Manhattan. It’s not looking good.

by Anonymousreply 587July 1, 2022 4:49 AM

It already averages over 30 a month.

by Anonymousreply 588July 1, 2022 4:56 AM

NYC has been kind of bitchmade the last twenty or so years. It needs to get back to its gritty roots I say. Good for more murders.

by Anonymousreply 589July 1, 2022 5:05 AM

R582 and all those tourists $$$ Detroit, Newark, Cleveland, St. Louis, Kansas City are going to lose!

by Anonymousreply 590July 1, 2022 6:09 PM

[quote][R573] New York is a big city with a large population so in reality your chances are rather slim, but the violence is so random and pointless and it's happening as people go about their daily routine that it certainly would give one pause when going out. My friends in Hell's Kitchen say that now when they go out, they take an Uber or a cab they no longer feel comfortable at night walking down the street.

I hope you're not trolling. r574, or that your friends aren't trolling you. I just spent a day at the beach and am heading into Manhattan for dinner with friends. Life is risk.

by Anonymousreply 591July 1, 2022 6:36 PM

No R591 I live 10 minutes from Midtown across the Hudson and NY has changed as so many cities have after the pandemic and it's obvious to someone who until 2019 was working in Midtown 4-5 days a week. PS why go back to the city now that it's so hot? On July 4th weekend!

by Anonymousreply 592July 1, 2022 6:42 PM

R592 RU taking the subway back to the city?

by Anonymousreply 593July 1, 2022 6:48 PM

R591 I hope UR not taking the subway back to the city!

by Anonymousreply 594July 1, 2022 6:49 PM

R591 so sweet of you to take time out of your lovely day to troll

by Anonymousreply 595July 1, 2022 6:53 PM

If you are traveling by car R591 you should take the LIE! Hope there's not too much traffic on this holiday weekend!

by Anonymousreply 596July 1, 2022 7:12 PM

R591 any hot surfers at the beach?

by Anonymousreply 597July 1, 2022 7:20 PM

R591=Captain Obvious

by Anonymousreply 598July 1, 2022 7:25 PM

A lot of NYers will be at a beach this weekend...the Hamptons, Coney Island or the Jersey shore...away from the hot and grimy city.

by Anonymousreply 599July 1, 2022 9:13 PM

I hope that our urban crime concern trolls are able to stay safe this weekend in their basement cubicles in Irkutsk.
