Madonna's 'Express Yourself' Was Inspired By Matthew Broderick & Jennifer Grey Breakup

Jennifer Grey says "Madonna told me she wrote 'Express Yourself' about me breaking up with Matthew," Grey remembers of the first time she heard the song. "She played it for me in her car."She said, 'Come into my car.' And I got in her Mercedes where she had a really good sound system and she was like, 'Listen to this song I just did. It's about you.'

When reading the song's lyrics, it makes sense. Even her character's name in Dirty Dancing may have a shout-out.

You deserve the best in life

So if the time isn't right, then move on

Second best is never enough

You'll do much better, baby, on your own

Of her past relationships, Grey says today, "What I've learned is that I demanded second best." And as for the inspiration for "Express Yourself," Grey reveals she contacted Madonna recently. "I wrote her an email where I asked, 'Did you just tell that to everyone?'"

Expose Yourself by Medusa was an even greater triumph. And who can forget when she suffered that electric shock on stage and all her backup dancers began emulating her convulsions believing it was just part of the show!

Julie Brown? The name doesn't ring a bell.

Another time, I was getting a mani/pedi with the great Christina Aguilera. I was feeling miserable over all the mockery I'd faced since my nose job. Chris (I call her Chris) looked me dead in the eye and said, "Listen, sister, they're just words. They can't bring you down. Always remember...you are [italic]beautiful.[/italic]"

You guys know the rest.

by Anonymousreply 4April 22, 2022 6:50 PM

That's actually an interesting anecdote. What was "second best" about Matthew Broderick? Was it that he was gay or not very nice to Jennifer? Would be interesting to know.

by Anonymousreply 5April 22, 2022 7:57 PM

Did she write a song Car Crash Double Murder in Ireland for them?

by Anonymousreply 6April 22, 2022 8:01 PM

[quote]"What I've learned is that I demanded second best."

I'm going to say "Ouch" for Matthew Broderick.

"And when I was a child, my lollipop had fallen on the floor and shattered into a million red chrystalline pieces. I wailed loudly, as a child would do. Several years later, Melissa Manchester came up to me and thanked me for inspiring "Dont Cry Out Loud"

by Anonymousreply 8April 22, 2022 9:40 PM

I wanted kids and Matthew didn’t; as I told my dear friend Whitney I believe children are the future…

After a bad breakup, I turned to my friend Cherilyn Sarkisian. I was distraught and told her I didn’t think I wanted to live any longer. She asked me the most profound question that saved my life. She said to me “do you believe in life after love?”

by Anonymousreply 13April 23, 2022 12:24 AM

Everybody at my school was sure that Sandy, Madge, and Jen were fucking.

R17 really?

Madonna and Jennifer Grey were tight for a time because they made a movie together called “bloodhounds of Broadway” which was absolutely dreadful but you would see pictures of them in the press.

by Anonymousreply 19April 23, 2022 3:45 PM

Bloodhounds of Broadway was directed by Howard Brookner, who went off his AZT medication to finish making the film. He died from AIDS before the movie's release. Columbia Pictures re-cut Brookner's rough cut and added narration.

Jennifer speaks the truth.

I also wrote a song inspired by the Grey-Broderick relationship and had a decent hit with it...

This is my favorite Madonna era.

I loved her introductory era as well, but this one was just AWESOME.

Remember when “Like A Prayer” hit the airwaves?

It was top 10 billboard magic.

Good times.

by Anonymousreply 22April 23, 2022 4:20 PM

R22, it's a shame that Express Yourself doesn't have hundreds of millions of views on youtube. It's one of her best music videos ever.

by Anonymousreply 23April 23, 2022 6:08 PM

Grey’s book sounds so ghost written and boring. They’re really pulling out all the stops before it disappears into Kindle oblivion. No fucking way did Express Yourself have anything to do with those two bores. The most interesting about them is the car accident/deaths…which Jennifer claims she thinks about every day.

Another time, at a pre-Oscars brunch circa 2007 I think. And Beyonce was there, prior to being Queen of England all that jazz. We started talking about men, and I volunteered that I once had to break up with the love of my life because he didn't want kids and most importantly wouldn't commit. 3 years later I'm signing "If you like it then you shoulda put a ring on it" dancing in my car. I smile. I'm such a visionary.

[quote] Julie Brown? The name doesn't ring a bell.

She's in a bidding war for Twitter against Elon Musk.

by Anonymousreply 26April 23, 2022 6:21 PM

Madonna wrote a powerful song ballad about me too called "Spanish Eyes", it's about heart break and love lost, endless tears on my pillow, and then finding a way to move on...

by Anonymousreply 27April 23, 2022 6:23 PM

r27 OK Hilaria, whatever you say.

by Anonymousreply 28April 23, 2022 8:08 PM

R4, that story would work only if one wouldn't wonder why a 40 yr old jennifer grey would be hanging out with 20 yr old christina Aguilera sometime before 2002.

by Anonymousreply 29April 23, 2022 8:21 PM

I was having tea with my dear friend, Madonna, one day and we were reminiscing about past loves and old paramours. I brought up my first love, the beautiful Dickie Cromwell, whom I married. He was 35 at the time and I was only 19, but I was completely smitten! Such a lovely, lovely man, but alas, it was never meant to be! Years later, Madonna rings up me out of the blue and tells me she wrote a song about me and Dickie. She called it "Forbidden Love."

I remember in 1996, The Tony Rich Project and I had dinner and he told me that Nobody Nose It But Me was written about moi. Such a sweetheart.

by Anonymousreply 31April 24, 2022 7:34 PM

It must've been, oh, late 1993, and my dearest friend from high school and I got together as we did every year to eat the food of our childhood and talk about old times. We were sitting in some diner, and I had just ordered my usual bowl of Kellogg's Just Right, when my friend said to me: "Just Right again, Jennifer? When are you going to try something different when we get together? Eggs? Pancakes? Hell, why not even Cornflakes for a change?"

And I grimaced: "Ugh! I [italic]never[/italic] was a Cornflake girl!"

Out of the corner of my eye I saw this small redhead woman suddenly jump up from where she had been seated nearby, clutching a notepad and running out the door, where she hailed a nearby taxi. "Take me to the studio, NOW!" she said.

A few months later, I turn on the radio, and, well, you know...

by Anonymousreply 32April 27, 2022 9:46 AM

R22 It’s boring a lot of money wasted.

by Anonymousreply 33April 27, 2022 9:51 AM

Whoops meant to quote r23 The express yourself video is a bore. the song has aged badly also.

by Anonymousreply 34April 27, 2022 9:52 AM

I personally think David Fincher did some of her best videos: "Express Yourself", "Oh Father", "Vogue" and "Bad Girl".

I know a lot of people disagree with me, but I do prefer the album version of "Express Yourself" over the remix, which I can only imagine sounded really fresh and interesting at the time, but nowadays to me seems a bit tinny.

by Anonymousreply 35April 27, 2022 9:55 AM

Just because her name was Baby that was a fucking shout out. Quite a stretch there asshole, like your prolapsed anus.

by Anonymousreply 36April 27, 2022 9:55 AM

Baby cried the day the circus came to town, because she didn’t want parades just passing by her…

by Anonymousreply 37April 27, 2022 2:28 PM

This thread could have been WAY funnier.

by Anonymousreply 38April 27, 2022 2:32 PM

R35, I had no idea Fincher did those videos.

Yes, those were some of her best videos, no question.

by Anonymousreply 39April 27, 2022 2:34 PM

So could your post, R38.

by Anonymousreply 40April 27, 2022 3:37 PM

I dunno, R38, reading this thread made me laugh. Choking on my breakfast type laughing.

[quote] Madge, Sandy, and Jennifer made an odd trio.

Didn't the press call them the "snatch batch"?

by Anonymousreply 42April 30, 2022 6:24 PM

"It's about you" could mean that Madonna wrote it about Jennifer. Or it could be a way of Madonna saying that the subject she was writing about fit Jennifer at that time.

by Anonymousreply 48May 6, 2022 8:48 PM

Here's Jennifer telling the story to Drew. I love how in the screencap they've chosen for the video it looks like Drew is saying: "Is this [italic]true[/italic] Jennifer?"
