Arthritis in my shoulders

I recently discovered I have arthritis in both shoulders. What can I do to alleviate the pain?

Die?

Get a prescription from your physician.

I've had arthritis since my 20's. I have ordered a tens unit off of amazon which is very helpful when it is bad. Heating pads help. They sell a cream now that is topical ibuprofen, Voltaren. You will likely discover that the pain killers (like ibuprofen) start hurting your stomach and you end up with arthritis AND stomach pains. Prescription painkillers only work in the sense that they knock you out so you don't feel it, but they don't help with the actual pain. I have found CBD REALLY helpful recently. I ordered from some Bee company and another place called Bravo Botanicals. If it is autoimmune (Rheumatoid or Psoriatic) you can also take biologics.

Uncle Bud’s Hemp Seed Oil works well for me. They make a body rub and gel too, but I like the roll-on.

I had surgery on my arthritic right shoulder three years ago, and the pain has been manageable without meds since then. The surgeon told me if it gets worse they could do a shoulder replacement. Ask your doctor if surgery is an option.

I have psoriatic arthritis and untreated (without medication) I would be completely disabled.

Thanks for the tip, r5: I'll try it.

How’s your diet? I know people are always saying “watch carbs”, but with inflammation and arthritis, it’s really true. I have it in my hands and feet, and cutting carbs reduced swelling and pain significantly within a month. It’s been over a year now and, except for occasional twinges from an impeding rain storm, most of my pain is still gone.

OP, you are getting decent advice on this thread. Do *not* talk to an ortho immediately, because they offer nothing but surgery. I live with chronic pain. I would recommend using Tylenol between the Ibuprofen to mitigate the stomach damage, I take a ton of Tylenol now because I can’t do a lot of ibuprofen. I have a topical lotion I loooove called Dr. Solomon’s (their balm doesn’t do it for me, only the lotion) which has both THC and CBD.

After you’ve exhausted topical/oral, you then move to steroid injections — which gradually break down joint tissue. That’s why it’s so critical you make informed decisions now. I’ve been dealing with this shit for 35 years! Had I known better, I would have made some different choices to extend how long I avoided surgery. Go through each phase slowly before you ramp it up, because once you do that, you can’t unring that bell.

Last but not least….Ice is your friend. Invest in an amazing gel ice pack that is what a pro would use. But contrary to popular belief, some people enjoy heat too, everyone is different so you have to try cold, hot, and alternating hot/cold. I almost forgot! Epson salt baths! I double the amount they say. If you live by the ocean, go in as often as you can because salt water draws out some of the water-retention.

Best wishes to you OP, I have found this site yo be a goldmine of info.

Topical lidocaine cream or patches can be helpful. You can get them OTC but if you get a doc to prescribe them, Medicare or other insurance will pay.

Isn’t that depressing? I remember relating to John Denver warbling about sunshine on his shoulders making him happy, now arthritis is making us miserable.

R15 As I posted it, it came to me. It’s These Dreams:

Get physical therapy, OP. I know someone who gave up tennis because of shoulder issues. PT helped a lot.

Put your hands on both sides of a doorway and lean in and hold 30 seconds. Shoulder, upper back and peck stretch. Repeat until you can eventually do ten sets. This worked for my shoulders and upper back scoliosis.

It's your wings cutting through, OP.

I had what was determined, including a deceptive ultrasound test, to be a small lipoma on my shoulder close to the neck. During the removal procedure a few weeks ago, it was larger than anticipated, and was growing under a vein and nerve. The surgeon was able to remove it all. It was benign. For a few months, it was contributing to neck and shoulder pain. I had two physicians prior, tell me I could ignore it. They were wrong.

OP, you've gotten several recommendations of Epsom salt baths, which I totally agree with, but I would also suggest adding magnesium oil/lotion. It's not expensive and boy does it it work! Your sleep will be AMAZING, which of course helps with chronic pain.

My other found that of the natural remedies, turmeric was the best. She had osteoarthritis.

by Anonymousreply 24June 2, 2022 2:54 PM

It could be psoriatic arthritis.

Are you prone to psoriasis?
