Netflix stock TANKS

Missed on earnings. I owned some shares of this but sold them quite awhile ago. Glad I did not hold onto this dog.

Down to $258/share in after hours trading. Yikes. This thing was at $691 in November of 2021.

by Anonymousreply 1April 19, 2022 10:08 PM

Guess their customers did mind the price hikes.

by Anonymousreply 2April 19, 2022 10:10 PM

R1 You mean during a pandemic when everyone was stuck at home all day and night? Yeah of course Netflix shares were up then. Watching Netflix was all anything anyone could do. That's why their horny movies like that 365 Days movie hit number one. But now the world is going back to normal and people don't have 24/7 to watch Netflix anymore. Add in a price hike...

by Anonymousreply 3April 19, 2022 10:12 PM

[quote]Guess their customers did mind the price hikes.

Although the company blamed everything but its price hikes for the subscriber losses.

by Anonymousreply 4April 19, 2022 10:12 PM

I thought it was overvalued even back at the height of the pandemic, R3, and I owned shares of it. I had a bad feeling about it and got out last summer.

by Anonymousreply 5April 19, 2022 10:14 PM

They don't get the good movies anymore because every studio has their own streaming service. Occasionally they will have a good documentary or limited series, but their content is not great since they are not the only game in town anymore. And the price hikes didn't help.

by Anonymousreply 6April 19, 2022 10:15 PM

I should say overbought, not overvalued.

by Anonymousreply 7April 19, 2022 10:16 PM

R5 There are also way too many streaming services now. Most people can only afford one or two. Netflix will be okay but I expect half the current streamers will be gone in five years.

by Anonymousreply 8April 19, 2022 10:17 PM

I have Peacock and I actually use it at least once a week. Never had Netflix streaming service.

by Anonymousreply 9April 19, 2022 10:17 PM

$ROKU condoles them.

by Anonymousreply 10April 19, 2022 10:22 PM

I hardly ever watch it and the price keeps going up. There are lots of other options that I watch more often, so one day I will just cancel it.

by Anonymousreply 11April 19, 2022 10:22 PM

I think if the content was good people would pay the price hikes. Prime membership went up and I don't think people abandoned Amazon in droves...

However what I have heard is that Netflix's original content mostly sucks.

by Anonymousreply 12April 19, 2022 10:24 PM

Investors asking where is all that advance you gave to Haz & Hag? Get it back, NOW!!

by Anonymousreply 13April 19, 2022 10:28 PM

I watched Choose or Die over the weekend. Man, what a clunker THAT was. It's frustrating because they seem pretty savvy on when they release new content. Right when I'm about to cancel they'll release something I really want to see and I stay on. They better think long and hard about their crackdown on password sharing.

by Anonymousreply 14April 19, 2022 10:39 PM

BECAUSE IT SUCKS!!!!!!

The worst programs on the planet! They banked on a few good shows and jacked the price up! Fuck those cunts!

by Anonymousreply 15April 19, 2022 10:43 PM

Amazon Prime is a whole different animal. People who subscribe get something beyond the streaming service. My mother was an Amazon Prime member for a while before I told her about streaming. She had no idea.

by Anonymousreply 16April 19, 2022 10:44 PM

Is there just the one streaming service which throws old movies into the mix? I like the old Bette Davis movie and the like every once in a while.

Netflix is alright. Basically I'm waiting for "The Crown" at this point but that's no time soon. I just plainly have Netflix. No add ones since I read a very great deal anyway.

Tubi is not half bad. That's free and they just have a few commercials is all.

by Anonymousreply 17April 19, 2022 10:44 PM

Their content is absolute trash these days. I remember when Netflix was the beginning of the streaming TV show wars, where they had like 1-3 original shows going at a time and everyone knew the plot. Now they air a season of some poorly promoted production, cancel it, then add a price hike. They don't offer live TV or streaming after airdate like Hulu and Peacock do, and their selection of gay movies is just as poor as it was in 2015, if not worse now. They deserve this stock loss.

by Anonymousreply 18April 19, 2022 10:47 PM

[quote] "I hardly ever watch it and the price keeps going up. There are lots of other options that I watch more often, so one day I will just cancel it."

Same, R11. I'm ready to cancel it myself. I already have Shudder (which I've been hitting pretty hard lately), Prime Video, and Hulu (w/ads, so I never use it, but get it "free" with my phone plan), and have watched Tubi on occasion. The only thing I (re)watch regularly on NETFLIX anymore, is "Seinfeld", because it's a favorite.

They've been resting on things for far too long. So while I'm still subscribed, I'm glad to see they're finally taking a hit.

I actually watch Youtube more than anything else, to be honest.

by Anonymousreply 19April 19, 2022 10:48 PM

I'm sure their stock will recover as soon Netflix announces that they renewed their contract with Dave Chappelle, this time giving him a billion US Dollars for his next three stand-up specials.

Money well spent.

by Anonymousreply 20April 19, 2022 10:49 PM

R17, Amazon has a good collection of old movies. And I think HBO Max comes with Turner Classic Movies.

by Anonymousreply 21April 19, 2022 10:50 PM

Has anyone checked in on Ryan Murphy?

by Anonymousreply 22April 19, 2022 10:51 PM

R17, I have access to TCM streaming through HBO Max. Tons of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford films available and restored.

by Anonymousreply 23April 19, 2022 10:52 PM

How did HMax, Disney, Apple, Hulu, etc. do during 1st qtr vs. Nflx?

by Anonymousreply 24April 19, 2022 10:57 PM

[quote]There are also way too many streaming services now.

They might be the biggest but those services are going to keep chip, chip, chipping away at them as time goes on. Other services vying for content and ones like Disney and Paramount pulling back their rights to air their programs hurt them.

I got tired of them after their last price hike, after not releasing anything I feel is "must watch." Also, they're too quick to cancel shows. I was at the point where I wasn't even sure if I should attempt to watch something.

The last show I watched on there was already cancelled and it had nothing to do with the views overall but the "way" that they measure metrics. I ran across an interview with the creator of "The Babysitter's Club" (which I didn't watch but I heard was pretty good for that kind of content) and she said Netflix canned the show, despite the fact that it was more watched than shows on cable television not because not enough people were viewing it but because they weren't viewing it "in the right way."

by Anonymousreply 25April 19, 2022 10:57 PM

I got rid of them two years ago. Don’t miss it at all.

by Anonymousreply 26April 19, 2022 10:59 PM

Price hikes combined with less and less desirable content--yeah, you lose subscribers.

by Anonymousreply 27April 19, 2022 11:07 PM

You gays watch WAY too much TV and you spend WAY too much money.

by Anonymousreply 28April 19, 2022 11:07 PM

Every single piece of content they produce is terrible, save the occasional decent comedy special.

by Anonymousreply 29April 19, 2022 11:11 PM

It's the price hike. Other streaming services are a fraction of their cost. People would rather subscribe to 2 (or even 3) streaming services instead of just Netflix.

by Anonymousreply 30April 19, 2022 11:16 PM

Netflix originals are about as quality-driven as Lifetime originals. Back in the day I could always find a decent movie on Netflix, but now it's like searching through the $1.00 DVD bin in a porno store (minus the porn).

by Anonymousreply 31April 19, 2022 11:16 PM

Good old American MBAs will run anything into the ground.

by Anonymousreply 32April 19, 2022 11:17 PM

[quote]They don't get the good movies anymore because every studio has their own streaming service

This is really it I think. They have a decent selection of television shows but their movie selection is terrible because Disney and WB have their own now.

If when Peacock/Universal and Paramount Plus really gets steam then they are screwed because there goes NBC and CBS produced shows and Universal/Paramount movies. Disney is already moving ABC shows to Disney+ and Hulu.

by Anonymousreply 33April 19, 2022 11:19 PM

What was the price 5 years ago?

Yeah, not a bad investment.

by Anonymousreply 34April 19, 2022 11:21 PM

[quote]They don't get the good movies anymore because every studio has their own streaming service

Netflix earned 27 Oscar nominations in 2022, more than any other studio.

by Anonymousreply 35April 19, 2022 11:24 PM

I guess Bridgerton is not the draw they thought it was. Or Shonda Rhimes.

by Anonymousreply 36April 19, 2022 11:24 PM

Oscars do not mean dividends. They went from a dvd rental service to movie streaming platform to a wanna be studio.

by Anonymousreply 37April 19, 2022 11:26 PM

[quote]Netflix earned 27 Oscar nominations in 2022, more than any other studio.

the Big Bang Theory, NCIS, and Two and a Half Men were the top rated shows for I don't know how many years. Quality does not equal buts in seats or viewership.

by Anonymousreply 38April 19, 2022 11:27 PM

When i first got Netflix many years ago i think the price was 4.99 a month. Then it went to 7.99, now it's fucking 19.99 a month. I never watch it. I think it is time to cancel. I also have Paramount Plus and i really like it.

by Anonymousreply 39April 19, 2022 11:30 PM

Sure for those who held it for a long time R34 but not everyone wants to hold a single stock for many years. And the people who bought this in the $500s and $600s are screwed. I don't see it getting back to that.

by Anonymousreply 40April 19, 2022 11:36 PM

I'm with R14. It is already a very questionable expense that I wonder why I continue to pay. I also have homes in 2 States that I am at both on a weekly basis. Let them try to come after me for password sharing and it will push me right to the cancel button.

by Anonymousreply 41April 19, 2022 11:38 PM

[quote]Netflix earned 27 Oscar nominations in 2022, more than any other studio.

And this years Oscar’s were the second-lowest rated ever, so what’s that tell you?

by Anonymousreply 42April 19, 2022 11:38 PM

Are they STILL trying to make Ryan Reynolds a star? Jesus, they need to give it up!

by Anonymousreply 43April 19, 2022 11:40 PM

I don’t know what things are like on the US version but in the U.K., pretty much everything that was decent on it has been taken off and moved over to Disney+ so I’m not surprised so many people are dropping it now and downsizing the platforms they’re subscribed to.

by Anonymousreply 44April 19, 2022 11:41 PM

They are so heavy on real-life murder documentaries and so many stupid foreign shit films that I no longer give a shit. I only "leeched" one of their programs in the past year, yes lecched. Even though I could leech all of them for free, I only grabbed one.

by Anonymousreply 45April 19, 2022 11:43 PM

I canceled the moment they said they were raising their prices for the 2nd or 3rd time in 4 years. Not sorry! Sounds like the new price tipped others over the threshold of dumping Netflix too.

Netflix should own up to their mistake of raising prices and making shitty movies and go back to having a quality movie collection and some shows and drop the prices back to where they were.

by Anonymousreply 46April 19, 2022 11:46 PM

I don't consider Netflix to be a place to watching movies anymore. It's mostly a place to watch series. And a good half of the series I watch are foreign. I guess if people are expecting movies or only watch American movies because they're illiterate or subtitles frighten them then the pickings are slim.

I'm thinking of getting HBO Max for movies but need to unsubscribe from one of the other five I have. Gotta keep costs down these days.

by Anonymousreply 47April 19, 2022 11:55 PM

R46, have you ever heard of inflation????

Does nothing else you pay for ever go up in price? How much are you paying for gas today versus one year ago?

by Anonymousreply 48April 19, 2022 11:57 PM

R48, Netflix's almost annual subscriptions are coming in at a rate twice the annual inflation rate. These increases are coming under the guise of "giving us more of what we want," when in reality, for most of us, they are giving us less. And these increases are coming at the same time that Disney+ and HBO Max stepped up their streaming game. Tubi is totally free with commercials and has the largest number of gay titles out of any mainstream streaming platform out there. Netflix has lost its focus and screwing their customers in the process - a horrible model destined to fail.

by Anonymousreply 49April 20, 2022 12:13 AM

R49 here...almost annual subscription INCREASES...

by Anonymousreply 50April 20, 2022 12:16 AM

But they are very generous to us and allow us to survive and thrive and strive for universal services for all humankind!

There's no place like Netflix.

by Anonymousreply 51April 20, 2022 12:30 AM

That's true R48 but there's an elastic demand for things like streaming services.

by Anonymousreply 52April 20, 2022 12:48 AM

R39 I also really like the Paramount+ content. It has some functionality issues but is a great value at $10/month ad-free. Netflix is a bore for the most part. They sometimes have new, watchable stuff at the beginning of the month.

by Anonymousreply 53April 20, 2022 12:52 AM

I don't care at all about the price hike. It's still relatively cheap. I care about the lack of good programming.

I think I've enjoyed about three new shows this year: The Andy Warhol doc, Inventing Anna, and, shockingly, the dumb (but highly entertaining) is it cake show. Notice how none of those are actual series. Ozark was there last great series. And that's about over.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I feel like they used to have such better series.

by Anonymousreply 54April 20, 2022 12:52 AM

[quote]I guess Bridgerton is not the draw they thought it was. Or Shonda Rhimes.

Bridgerton is a draw but most people are keen to the fact that

1. You can cancel after you binge any series.

2. Good shows and movies only help them out for so long. They're still not turning a profit no matter how big their userbase is.

[quote] have you ever heard of inflation????

R48, are you okay? As many analysts said they had no reason to up their price. At least Amazon said they were paying for the Lord of the Rings series.

Netflix's Price Increase History for the STANDARD tier

January 2021: From $13.99 per month to $15.49 per month.

October 2020: From $12.99 to $13.99 per month.

January 2019: From $10.99 to $12.99 per month.

October 2017: From $9.99 to $10.99 per month.

October 2015: From $8.99 to $9.99 per month.

May 2014: From $7.99 to $8.99 per month.

Keep in mind, if you want HDR content or 4K content you're going to have to get their top level tier.

Meanwhile Spotify is $9.99 ... and has been since 2011.

by Anonymousreply 55April 20, 2022 1:02 AM

I only held onto Netflix to binge Bridgerton 2 which was so bad I’ve lost interest. I’ll keep prime and Hulu but Netflix is history, just not that good. If they want me back they’ll have to make me a good offer.

by Anonymousreply 56April 20, 2022 1:09 AM

Thank-you for that, R55. By Netflix's own admission, the increases are tied to development of their own content. Content that most of us agree largely sucks. Netflix is no longer unique with lots of other options.

by Anonymousreply 57April 20, 2022 1:10 AM

They’ll lower the subscription cost and start generating ad-based revenue and it will be back. If you liked it at 300, you’ll love it at 250. Buy

by Anonymousreply 58April 20, 2022 1:14 AM

Tell us something we don’t know OP. DL is a great place for insider tips.

by Anonymousreply 59April 20, 2022 1:16 AM

Criterion Channel is where it's at for me. No need for shitty Netflix originals when I can have an endless buffet of classic, foreign, and art films (including gay films), in beautiful, restored quality, for a hundred bucks a year.

by Anonymousreply 60April 20, 2022 1:18 AM

I don’t like having to sign up for a streaming service just to see one film or series I’m interested in. There are too many of them now and individually they don’t have enough programming I’m interested in to make subscribing worth it. HBO and Netflix used to release their original productions to rent on Amazon and Google Play and so on after a decent interval, but now they just squat on them.

by Anonymousreply 61April 20, 2022 1:28 AM

I subscribe to the following streaming services:

Netflix

HBO Max

Amazon Prime

Hulu

Peacock

Paramount+

Ironically, I tend to watch free Tubi the most. I am in a fussy mood tonight and could not find anything I wanted to watch. I watched a couple of episodes of the Munsters on Peacock and finally landed on one of my comfort movies Big Business that I purchased on Prime a couple of years ago.

by Anonymousreply 62April 20, 2022 1:38 AM

R62 No Apple TV?

by Anonymousreply 63April 20, 2022 2:01 AM

You must watch a lot of TV R62.

by Anonymousreply 64April 20, 2022 2:12 AM

LOL @ R63 and R64. No Apple TV and ironically, I don't watch that much TV. I am just fussy about what I want to watch. I think it is more too many options, so it makes it painful in even trying to find something.

by Anonymousreply 65April 20, 2022 2:19 AM

R47 Unless you’re in a hurry, HBO Max might have a Labor Day sale again this year like they did last year where its half off.

by Anonymousreply 66April 20, 2022 7:57 AM

R17 Try Kanopy. Free with a library membership. Though there's a limit to how much you can watch per month.

by Anonymousreply 67April 20, 2022 8:01 AM

Well somebody has to pay for Dave SHITpelle’s “comedy” specials!

by Anonymousreply 68April 20, 2022 8:05 AM

The advantage of a subscription of "à la carte" basis is that you can decide if your subscription money goes to something like FOX News or not.

Sure, you have to stay on top of your many subscriptions, but if you really like watching stuff, you pay that particular price gladly spending time to look what all these streaming platforms have to offer and which streaming platforms you can dump for now and which new content drives you to those who haven't subscribed in a while.

by Anonymousreply 69April 20, 2022 8:23 AM

My apologies, ... and which new content drives you to those which you haven't subscribed in a while.

by Anonymousreply 70April 20, 2022 8:25 AM

They gave Shonda and Ryan Murphy way too much money. Sure, the Warhol series was good, but everything else Murphy touches was shite. Shonda actually has done better, but she really hasn't put out much stuff.

Instead, Netflix should give chances to cheaper up and coming writers. New ideas. New stories. New visions.

Most TV creators best shows are their first or second series. Not their 20th.

by Anonymousreply 71April 20, 2022 8:32 AM

[quote] They gave Shonda and Ryan Murphy way too much money.

They have to give these content creators money in order to fully own the content. Shonda can't take Bridgerton and sell it to some other platform.

[quote] BAFTA-AWARD winner Michaela Coel stood her ground against the big money lure of Netflix when she discovered she'd have to forgo the I May Destroy You copyright, too.

[quote] The show's creator and actress, 32, was approached by the pay-for online streaming service in 2017, when they enticed her with a £800k ($1million) agreement to have the series which takes a frank look at sexual assault, on its platform.

[quote] While many shows have been hugely successful, with multiple series, such as Stranger Things, Mindhunter and Snowpiercer, the Londoner refused when she realised she wouldn't be paid a percentage of the copyright.

Boomer stock.

by Anonymousreply 73April 20, 2022 8:44 AM

I am barely watching it these days and apart from Ozark I don’t think their content is remaining quality.

Some of these ‘con men’ documentary series they are producing are stupid and not at all worthy of having a tv production made of them. I’m sure these conned women are just friends of Netflix producers who are desperate for content!

Their only hope is to plough more money into good original drama like The Crown and Ozark and become a main player ‘old school regarded’ TV network. However, I think that Sussexes series could be a nail in their coffin!

by Anonymousreply 74April 20, 2022 8:45 AM

I bought it high and most money like a lot of people, but i’m holding onto it hoping for a miracle because I can’t bear to sell it at a huge loss. Maybe it won’t hit $666 again but it’s got to come up a LITTLE out of the shitter it’s in, no?

by Anonymousreply 75April 20, 2022 9:47 AM

“lost money”, not “more money”

by Anonymousreply 76April 20, 2022 9:48 AM

“most money” not “more money”

FUCK WHY DOESNT DATALOUNGE HAVE AN EDIT FEATURE FOR US FAT FUCKS!

by Anonymousreply 77April 20, 2022 9:49 AM

Everything’s moving to fast

by Anonymousreply 78April 20, 2022 10:00 AM

Michaela Coel, mentioned in R72, raises another issue with Netflix: creators don't own their own work when they sell ideas, writing, films and even full series to them. Netflix owns everything once you sign on the dotted line. As a writer myself, that makes me very uncomfortable.

by Anonymousreply 79April 20, 2022 10:33 AM

[quote] Everything’s moving to fast

Including your grammar review.

by Anonymousreply 80April 20, 2022 10:48 AM

I’m holding out for new seasons of The Crown and Stranger Things. Apart from that I’m not watching much on it. Although I started watching Young Sheldon and actually rather fallen in love with it; it’s much better than a Big Bang and Annie Potts steals every scene she’s in. Once I get through all that I’m unlikely to stay subscribed.

by Anonymousreply 81April 20, 2022 11:52 AM

Well, that's what happens when you can only hook up with the Spare and not the Heir.

by Anonymousreply 82April 20, 2022 12:00 PM

Down another 27% today (pre market).

by Anonymousreply 83April 20, 2022 12:20 PM

My household only keeps our subscription because my somewhat elderly mother watches their European films all day. Otherwise it would have been cancelled a long time ago.

by Anonymousreply 84April 20, 2022 12:41 PM

Git that Money back from Haznoballs ASAP scream the shareholders. Give it to Chapelle, he's our last hope

by Anonymousreply 85April 20, 2022 12:43 PM

So there's HBO Max, Netflix, Showtime, Amazon Prime, Hulu, Starz, Peacock, Paramount Plus, AMC Plus, as well as any Internet connection fees which probably also include cable...

The selection is nice but the price is too much. I'm not subscribing to each and every one of them. Something's got to give.

To those who sign up to a streaming service, binge the fuck out of stuff during the 7 day free trial then cancel it because they can get charged, how often can you do this? Do you have to use a different credit card each time? If you can use the same credit card, are there only so many times you can do it over a certain period of time? I'm thinking of doing it for HBO Max.

by Anonymousreply 90April 20, 2022 3:22 PM

I rotate my subscriptions every few months. That way I always have several new shows that I want to watch. I'm about to cancel Netflix because it's being dominated currently by trashy dating shows. When I come back in a few months, I'll have Stranger Things and other shows to keep me happy. It's the only way to do streaming, IMO.

by Anonymousreply 91April 20, 2022 3:25 PM

Netflix reached the inevitable point where competitors (mainly HBO Max and Disney/Hulu) would have a similar product at similar price point. Netflix was ordering content like crazy under the belief that customers just needed something new. Unfortunately they sacrificed quality, and Disney and HBO already had reputations for a certain level of quality which Netflix never had.

It will bounce back but it won’t reach its grossly overvalued highs again.

by Anonymousreply 92April 20, 2022 3:32 PM

My new plan to turn the ship around - we will be renaming ourselves to Quikster! Quikster(tm) provides the modern family a wholesome and engaging entertainment experience from the comfort of their own living rooms, a necessity in this chaotic world.

by Anonymousreply 93April 20, 2022 3:45 PM

Gays, you want too many things. Remember...people first, then money, then things!

by Anonymousreply 94April 20, 2022 3:46 PM

[quote] Netflix was ordering content like crazy under the belief that customers just needed something new. Unfortunately they sacrificed quality, and Disney and HBO already had reputations for a certain level of quality which Netflix never had.

By that logic, BRAVO, A&E, Discovery Channel, E! Entertainment Channel would've ceased to exist a long time ago. Reality TV is cheap, low quality. People love trash. And they pay streaming platform to watch trash. Shonda Rhimes' Bridgerton is hardly highbrow entertainment, but it's breaking all sorts of records for the streaming platform.

by Anonymousreply 95April 20, 2022 3:47 PM

Yeah one of the issues with torrenting is that I'm now running into my overpriced monopoly internet service provider's bandwidth caps. Already paying $99 a month for 1.2 terabytes of data, which I can reach in less than ten days, and they want to charge me $129 a month for truly unlimited (but still probably throttled) bandwidth.

by Anonymousreply 96April 20, 2022 3:48 PM

R89 and R96 I got emailed right away by my internet provider and warned about copyright infringement the ONE time I downloaded a file from a torrent that I wasn’t supposed to. Never again. Not worth losing internet over. And I was shocked they flagged me so quickly.

by Anonymousreply 97April 20, 2022 7:14 PM

by Anonymousreply 98April 20, 2022 7:37 PM

[quote]They gave Shonda and Ryan Murphy way too much money.

They gave Ryan Murphy too much money.

They did not give Shonda too much money. Bridgerton became the number one streamed show in the history of the platform for a time, Inventing Anna hit #1 on Nielsen's charters and was popular even if people generally didn't like it and her next one is a Debbie Allen documentary.

Ryan Murphy was paid twice as much, put out three times as many programs and none of them could touch her numbers with just two so far. That's sad.

He should have just taken his time.

[quote]Instead, Netflix should give chances to cheaper up and coming writers. New ideas. New stories. New visions.

The old Netflix would have. The new Netflix ... still does ... but they won't promote any of it. Netflix tells you what it wants you to watch. It wasn't always that way. If you're not a name, they'll buy your content on the cheap and few people will ever hear of it unless they decide it's worth their time and nothing else bigger is coming out.

[quote]By that logic, BRAVO, A&E, Discovery Channel, E! Entertainment Channel would've ceased to exist a long time ago.

But those come with a cable subscription which you likely didn't get just looking to watch that ONE channel.

by Anonymousreply 99April 20, 2022 7:39 PM

Ironically Ryan Murphy and Netflix are sort of mirrors of each other both having diluted the value of their brand by overproducing forgettable content.

by Anonymousreply 100April 20, 2022 7:46 PM

They cancel everything after 3 seasons. After I got burned with GLOW and Santa Clarita Diet I stopped watching their shows.

by Anonymousreply 101April 20, 2022 9:13 PM

A new Ryan Murphy show: QUIKSTER, the story of a plucky startup set against the backdrop of 1930's prewar Germany. Featuring Darren Criss as the plucky night club owner, Jessica Lange as a fading singer with a dark secret, Kathy Bates as the inventor who seeks to change everything with the invention of the television set, and starring Emma Roberts as the crossdressing Nazi Commander who just wants to be one of the guys.

by Anonymousreply 102April 20, 2022 9:17 PM

R101 they determined the viewership of shows drops off a lot by the third season, but they're making the mistake that it also pisses off the hardcore fans who will be less likely to trust them the next time. Similar to how Google handles products, they sunset/retire products all the time and it drives developers and users away because you don't know if you're going to be rug pulled.

by Anonymousreply 103April 20, 2022 9:20 PM

The blood letting will continue. Once the sharks smell blood in the water. Well, you know the rest.

Isn't it ironic?. The marriage of Netflix & the Sussex Sh*t Show finally coming to fruition. Ahh, the confluence of the planets. You couldn't get this to fly in a screen play, it's so bizarre & so satisfying at the same time A wonderful train wreck.. Somehow unless Harry has nude pics of HM w. Himmler don't think his crap is going to fly. What he's dropping is boring. Who cares about the delusions & hurt feelings of an overgrown , low IQ man child, complaining about working from home, FFS .Its plopping even as I write this. True, DM is an English Rag, but it is one of the most read rags in the world, even if it's just for guilty pleasure & laughs. People are lapping up all this stuff about him being a wanker by the ladle full.

R3 thinks a stock's share price plummeting 65% is business as usual.

by Anonymousreply 105April 20, 2022 10:39 PM

R104 good lord you need to get over your Harry and Meghan obsession.

by Anonymousreply 106April 20, 2022 10:46 PM

Netflix needs to merge with some other streaming service(s) and follow the HBO model of offering a "hub" of streaming media under one subscription. As other commenters have noted, there are a couple of big prestige type shows while the other is a bunch of documentaries, cooking shows & cheap shit they bought from overseas that apparently Britbox or PBS didn't want. I don't think their price point would be unreasonable if they offered better, more diverse options

by Anonymousreply 107April 20, 2022 11:23 PM

Meghan Markle's gonna have to give the millions back.

by Anonymousreply 108April 20, 2022 11:45 PM

R108, you better not mis metaphors or threads. The Doyenne of Dl R106, has made it clear. NO ONE & She does mean NO ONE better mention anything on the Netflix thread about the Markles. Watchit, she may be one of the FBI, CIA, Stazi, Interpol. You'll be in jail as quick as you can Facist.

OMFG! NO ONE CARES! STOP! WILL YOU FREAKS GO BACK TO YOUR DAMN KLAN GRANNY THREADS AND FUCK ALL THE WAY RIGHT OFF!!!!

by Anonymousreply 110April 21, 2022 1:07 AM

This all suggests that streaming growth is not as exponential as originally believed, which is a threat to many of the other players.

by Anonymousreply 111April 21, 2022 1:14 AM

R111 - I don't know, maybe coming close to saturation levels? It's not a bottomless pit.

by Anonymousreply 112April 21, 2022 1:23 AM

R109 your response was totally appropriate and not at all a huge sign of insanity and OCD!

by Anonymousreply 113April 21, 2022 1:53 AM

For real though, let's be honest:

It's because there is so much GARBAGE on there now. I'm a horror movie fan, and their horror section is filled with so much low-budget crap. It's like Netflix wil just keep acquiring any content it can. No standards.

by Anonymousreply 114April 21, 2022 2:02 AM

Problem for Netflix is there are too damn many streaming services now. And Netflix is expensive.

by Anonymousreply 115April 21, 2022 2:26 AM

"The stock tanked because Netflix didn't ONCE ask me if I was OK when I made the Invictus Games all about ME!"

by Anonymousreply 116April 21, 2022 2:26 AM

I have Amazon Prime, Netflix and HBO Max. It’s seeming like too much. The only show I watch on Netflix is Ozark and the occasional new show like the Andy Warhol Diaries. Most of their content is crap for teenagers.

As mediocre as Netflix is, Amazon Prime is even worse! Terrible content and they charge you extra to watch new movies.

I can totally see why people would delete their accounts unless there was a good show on.

by Anonymousreply 118April 21, 2022 2:36 AM

Elon Musk is blaming it on woke shit they keep churning out.

by Anonymousreply 119April 21, 2022 2:37 AM

No diverting from the topic in the title allowed. Discuss Netfix ONLY!! don't make me tell you again. There WILL be consequences.

by Anonymousreply 120April 21, 2022 2:42 AM

They don't even have The Golden Girls.

by Anonymousreply 121April 21, 2022 2:45 AM

they are cracking down on sharing of passwords!

They said there will be cheaper options with ads etc

by Anonymousreply 122April 21, 2022 2:50 AM

With Netflix adding an ad supported lower tier, when are we going to start getting accurate streaming ratings?

by Anonymousreply 123April 21, 2022 2:51 AM

Now that Ozark is over I really don't care about many shows they have. It's been 8 years since the last season of Stranger Things, I've lost interest.

by Anonymousreply 125April 21, 2022 11:54 AM

[quote]As mediocre as Netflix is, Amazon Prime is even worse! Terrible content and they charge you extra to watch new movies.

One benefit of Amazon Prime is that they run frequent specials on other streaming services -- I've gotten a couple months of Paramount+ and AMC+ for $1.99 each.

by Anonymousreply 126April 21, 2022 12:13 PM

I have Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, Hulu, and Prime. That probably equals sixty a month. I don’t know why anyone else thinks there’s room for more streamers.

by Anonymousreply 129April 21, 2022 1:30 PM

R13 Amazon Prime at least has multiple uses. I do wish it was easier to filter the paid shit out, because it makes their library difficult to search and use.

by Anonymousreply 130April 21, 2022 1:43 PM

Which of the various HBOs is the best to get? I don't have cable so I need the streaming only version.

HBO feels like what Netflix used to be, in some areas.

by Anonymousreply 131April 21, 2022 1:45 PM

[quote]Amazon Prime at least has multiple uses.

The fact that it comes with Amazon's two day shipping is part of the reason why so many people ended up with it.

I'll give their Lord of the Rings shows a try though.

[quote]Which of the various HBOs is the best to get?

It's all HBO Max now. Anything that airs on premium/tv HBO will end up there but not necessarily the other way around.

But check and make sure that you're not using a service that already gives it to you for free. I get HBO Max free through ATT since I have my cell with them and a plan with that as a bonus.

by Anonymousreply 132April 21, 2022 1:52 PM

HBO and HBO Max had 76.8 million subscribers at the end of the first quarter of 2022. That marks a 3 million subscriber increase from the previous quarter and a 12.8 million year-over-year increase.

The news comes shortly after Netflix reported its first subscriber loss in more than a decade.

by Anonymousreply 133April 21, 2022 1:58 PM

HBO Max’s “prestige” will actually be a thing of the past once their platform is merged with Discovery within the next year and a mountain of cheap reality garbage will be side by side with HBO programs. In fact , one of the very first acts after the merger closed last week was for the loathesome Chip and Joanna Gaines be brought under the HBO side from the Discovery side so they can start producing scripted content.

It just means he doesn't think Netflix will, anytime soon, recover its stock price. Plus he can probably write off the loss against other gains.

by Anonymousreply 137April 21, 2022 2:23 PM

That's an interesting thought R111. Could this explosion in streaming actually be something of a fad which corporations were just too eager to jump on?

Not to say streaming won't have it's place in the future of entertainment, but perhaps now that EVERYONE has a paid streaming service the appeal of subscribing to any of them has really worn off.

If so, we might see a contraction in streaming services and more centralization of content (which is what I appreciated about Netflix in the first place).

by Anonymousreply 138April 21, 2022 2:24 PM

Why would anybody have thought streaming would be exponential? It was going to level off eventually. There are only so many people who can subscribe. Netflix was disgustingly overvalued for years.

by Anonymousreply 139April 21, 2022 2:39 PM

Bridgerton is science fiction. Sorry, but… color blind casting is dumb.

by Anonymousreply 140April 21, 2022 3:07 PM

Netflix reached the saturation point following the pandemic, while other streaming platforms are still in the early growth stage. They have 222 million total subscribers, while HBO Max has 77 million, and Disney has 130 million.

by Anonymousreply 141April 21, 2022 3:36 PM

I’m keeping an eye on Peacock. They lost $1.7 billion last year as they invested heavily to attract subscribers but at year end only had something like 9 million paid subscribers.

This year they project that loss will widen. If the streaming market is saturated, they are chasing fool’s gold.

by Anonymousreply 142April 21, 2022 4:12 PM

Actually a Netflix-Comcast merger could be a potential lifeboat for both companies.

by Anonymousreply 143April 21, 2022 4:19 PM

Agreed r143. Either a merger with Comcast (best option) or Paramount will be in Netflix’s future.

by Anonymousreply 144April 21, 2022 4:23 PM

R142 I wonder what their non paid viewership is like. I watch Peacock a few times a week but I only watch the free stuff.

Dave Chappelle? The Crown? Bridgerton? The Harlan Coben adaptations? Emily In Paris?

by Anonymousreply 147April 22, 2022 3:54 AM

I wonder why they never bought a studio for their library or content. MGM, Lionsgate, Fox, etc. The writing was on the wall that their prior studio content would revert and their original content was unproven.

by Anonymousreply 148April 22, 2022 4:02 AM

R147 He referred specifically to an upcoming Japanese show about a man giving birth called He's Expecting. It's based on a manga set in a world where men give birth instead of women. It's not actually a trans plot although the actor kinds of looks FTM.

by Anonymousreply 149April 22, 2022 4:08 AM

[quote]It's based on a manga set in a world where men give birth instead of women.

This has been done so many times already. "He's Expecting," is a comedy.

Just because he doesn't like something doesn't mean that it's "woke."

There are too many fucking streaming services now. We've got Spectrum cable which costs a fortune and then have to subscribe to HBO Max, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Hulu.. it's ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 151April 22, 2022 3:58 PM

R150 He's Expecting is billed on Netflix as a drama.

I'm not passing judgement on the show. In fact I intend to watch it this weekend as I watch pretty much everything Japanese (and Korean) on Netflix. I was just pointing to an example that Musk used as an example of the company's wokeness. He included a poster of the show in his tweet.

by Anonymousreply 152April 22, 2022 4:02 PM

Are we at the stage of “Netflix: sad last days” yet?

by Anonymousreply 153April 22, 2022 4:15 PM

Netflix simply did not believe legacy content was important and had stated as much.

The issue it turns out was not legacy content but Intellectual Property.

by Anonymousreply 154April 22, 2022 4:29 PM

[quote]He's Expecting is billed on Netflix as a drama.

Netflix threw millions at anybody who asked for it and wound up with a whole load of crap.

by Anonymousreply 167May 11, 2022 11:12 PM

Yep...when they paid Chapelle that $80 million for three hours worth of content and then turned around and raised their prices (saying they NEEDED to) I took that as a giant slap in the face. That was MY money they were wasting! So I cancelled and now torrent it all.

by Anonymousreply 168May 11, 2022 11:15 PM

The stock in at $166/share as of today. Think of the ones who bought this at $500+ and didn't sell. Or even $400+. They are screwed if they bought a significant amount.

Having said that, is it a buy at this point? Or still a falling knife? Will some other company buy it out?

It's a hard choice R164. I sold SPLK when it tanked...I lost thousands of dollars. But I took the money I got from the sale and put it in something else that did well. And SPLK still hasn't recovered it's now below $100/share.

by Anonymousreply 171May 12, 2022 12:15 PM

I don't watch it but has it occurred to Netflix that their content is shite and that's why their stock has tanked? C'mon ladies, Economics 101. Supply and demand are interconnected. Who the fuck do they have in their boardroom that they can't twig to this?

by Anonymousreply 172May 12, 2022 4:40 PM

I've noticed when I check out Netflix now, in addition to their never-ending, must be cheap to buy, foreign detective series, they've added a flood of 10-15 year old movies. Somebody's going broke.

by Anonymousreply 173May 12, 2022 9:58 PM

R173 I actually appreciate the older movies from back when I was a teen. They're nostalgic to me and/or they give me a chance to watch those I somehow missed out on. I used to have the DVD plan back in the day and gave up watching older stuff because the DVDs were always scratched or otherwise fucked up. Now I can stream them.

by Anonymousreply 174May 12, 2022 10:01 PM

This is why Netflix is in trouble:

"Murphy was given a reported $300m, five-year “overall deal”, where Netflix would take whatever he decided to bring them. In production terms, it was as close to absolute freedom as anyone is likely to get without owning the studio."

To date, no Murphy show has landed in the Top 20 most streamed show in Netflix history. Shonda Rimes, however, has 3 shows on the list.

by Anonymousreply 175May 12, 2022 11:49 PM

Yep. Netflix has no concept of the value of a dollar.

by Anonymousreply 176May 12, 2022 11:50 PM

by Anonymousreply 177May 13, 2022 12:31 AM

I opened a small position in NFLX this morning. I bought at around $167/share. I believe it is at or near bottom. It is too cheap to pass up at this price, and think Netflix will make a comeback.
