Loser husband of Japan's Princess Mako fails the bar examination for the second time!

Kei Komuro, 30, the husband of former Japanese princess Mako Komuro, has failed the New York state bar exam for the second time.

Kei, who graduated from New York’s Fordham University law school in 2021, first attempted the bar that same year.

His second exam took place in February of this year, and his name did not appear on the pass list released on Thursday. He currently works at the Lowenstein Sandler law firm in Manhattan where the couple resides.

The couple moved to New York last year after marrying in Japan. Their marriage was highly scrutinized by the media due to Komuro’s commoner status. Due to the public criticism, Mako was said to have developed post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the imperial household agency.

Mako’s father, Fumihito, is the crown prince and first in line for the throne. Emperor Naruhito, the current monarch of Japan, has only one child: Princess Aiko. Japanese law dictates that only royal males can inherit the throne. Consequently, the emperor’s younger brother and Mako’s father became the official heir in 2020.

Former Japanese princess Mako was forced to renounce her titles and the $1.3 million payout typically given to female royals after she married her college sweetheart, now-husband. She recently secured a volunteer gig helping curators prepare an exhibition of Asian paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The New York bar exam is offered four times a year, twice in February and twice in July, and takers are given an unlimited number of times to pass. It is unclear when or if Kei intends to take the test again.

A) She's the niece of the Emperor, and not the daughter of the Emperor. Sort of like Beatrice and Eugenie.

Prince William's degree covered geography, biology, AND art, and he wrote his senior dissertation on the Rodrigues coral reefs. He got an upper second degree, and got A levels on those subjects as well.

Kate's degree was in art history.

And since William was smart enough to wait to marry the right woman and is Britain's second most popular royal, I'd say he's showing plenty of smarts.

Former Princess Mako was a thirty some odd year old grown assed woman when she married. Like any other member of Japan's RF she amassed wealth or a tidy fortune way scions of such families do. Mako declined the dowdry which would've been paid straight from the state coffers, I think she got provided excellently by the family.

What I really like about Mako is that she accepted the house law according to which one loses their royal title when they get married to a non-royal in a dignified manner. She wanted to live her own life and in order to do so, she gave up her titles and perks, unlike some other former royals who insist on being referred to using their titles which connect them to their royal affiliation. *cough cough*

Whenever the Japanese Imperial Family are discussed, I always find myself feeling a bit sorry for Prince Hisahito who is, effectively, the only hope that the present line has of continuing (unless they decide to allow females in the line of succession, which they would simply have to do if anything happens to Hisahito). In many ways Japan's imperial family and their court remain firmly stuck in another century. That has created all sorts of problems including producing enough male heirs.

Not surprisingly Japanese young women aren't breaking down doors to marry into Japan's Imperial Family, and those who do get in often quite literally are driven mad from various pressures.

Adding to their woes, Japan's Imperial Family doesn't seem to have a very strong seed for breeding male children. Girls they have, but since that sex cannot inherit....

by Anonymousreply 61April 18, 2022 10:35 PM

R57 - Save your sympathies. Hisahito has been the adored golden apple of the JRF since he saw the light. His parents, the Emperor's younger brother and sister-in-law, were perfectly happy with their little family of four, with two daughters.

When it became clear that Naruhito's wife would never bear another child, let alone a male heir, the younger brother's wife was, er, "encouraged" to try for a boy on a third try. Which meant, of course, taking no chances and going with in vitro fertilisation. She was also confined to bed rest for the later months to be absolutely sure the baby was brought to term and healthy.

Being the dutiful woman she is, she followed along. I remember the photo of her leaving the hospital with the newborn BOY in her arms, and a smile on her face that would put in the shade the cat that ate the canary.

Your sympathies should go to the humiliated Empress Masako, whose life had been made miserable enough by the medieval men who control the Chrysanthemum Throne, and that of her daughter, pushed aside for a dick and balls that would never have to lead armies into battle, just smile and wave and attend other royal weddings and funerals.

It really was quietly ugly and awful. No wonder Masako has been clinically depressed for years.

When Masako finally agreed to marry Naruhito, it was because he swore he would protect her from the court. You can see how badly he failed.

She had a career, a fine education. She could have married any number of men and led a happy, wealthy, fulfilling life with a family that wasn't labelled second-class by strangers who looked at her through a glass that was living in past centuries.

I thought it horrible.

What one hopes of Hisahito is that he hasn't been utterly spoilt and raised to think he ranks just below God because of that little cock.

Don't worry about these former royals and money. They get the best financial advice and investment opportunities to turn a million into 10 million and 10 million into 50 million. Much of their financial holdings are held in LLCs so no one can trace it to them. And royal and imperial families have been stashing money into Swiss or offshore bank accounts for hundreds of years. They have more money than they can spend regardless of giving up titles.

The worst part has to be that his mother, Empress Michiko, herself was treated horribly by Akihito's mother, Empress Kojun. Many people thought she would be kinder to Masako having gone through such horrible treatment.

Unfortunately, it seems that Michiko decided that she would take out her anger on Masako.

If people thought Maria-Antonia of Austria, Alexandra of Hesse Darmstadt of and by the Rhine, even Kate Middleton or that Markle woman had tough time adjusting to royal status, Empress Masako has them beat by miles. That poor woman was literally beaten and worn down by not just JIF, but the "Grey Men" as it were who run things behind scenes.

You'd think in 20th century a wife (even noble or royal) would no longer be beaten down, humiliated, and devalued over failure to breed an heir, but that is exactly what happened with Masako.

Scions of royalty often are no different than any other wealthy or well off family. Anderson Coopers kids will likely be worth more money by their teens than most or all posting in this thread. It's just how people with wealth roll. Children (and gifts made to them) represent one of the largest deductions for most tax codes around world.

Yes, for children of poor royal families things might be different, but don't let small size of Japan fool you; JIF is loaded.

R75 She may be the mother of the future Emperor but she only gets to be Empress if Narihito diesnwhivh would have been the case even without that third child.

Without a male heir, Akeshino was always next in line after his older brother.

It is as if that daughter of Naruhito didn't exist. It is akin to Andrew being in line after Charles if Diana had had two girls instead of two boys.

Even in the monarchy on Britain of 500 years ago girls inherited if no male heir existed in the immediate line. As Churchill said when the 25 year old Elizabeth came to the throne in 1952, "Famous have been the reigns of our Queens."

So it wasn't a promotion because of the baby's birth, but because of her husband not being pushed further down by Madako having sons.

I despise the Japanese monarchy. Ffs, it's 2022. Japan is a Parliamentary democracy. The Emperor is a total figurehead, even more so than Britain's monarch, who has several constitutional rights and a far higher profile at home.

It's truly staggering that one of the most modernised post-industrial countries in the world still clings to this.

$US40 million really isn’t that much for an Emperor / Constitutional monarch, especially if/when it filters down to his younger brother, who could die before him. His younger brother’s formerly royal daughter couldn’t expect much. And I doubt that she ever has.

by Anonymousreply 91April 19, 2022 11:26 AM

[quote]I wish my life was so great that I could sneeze at $40 million

While $40 mm is a lot of money and most people would not sneeze at it, it's not sufficient to live the "celebrity" lifestyle.

You're living very comfortably, could afford to send your kids to private schools, and such. But, you're not living lavishly. In a city like Tokyo or NYC, you couldn't afford to own a 5000sqft 5 bdrm apartment. You're flying first class commercial, not owning a private jet.

We should all live so well, but there is a huge jump between having $40mm and having $400mm like Charles is supposed to have.

by Anonymousreply 99April 19, 2022 1:19 PM

And prior to selling his soul to the media he pretends to hate, that was about the level of hos trust fund, which he allegedly has decimated over the last few years.

None of these people are poor. But the mega players on the modern royal chessboard are, in order of wealth, Lichtenstein, the House of Orange-Nassau (The Netherlands), and then the Windsors.

And probably none of them them are as rich as the Gulf sheiks.

What's the deal with Japan sticking to male primogeniture? So stupid. Even the Brits finally gave it up when Kate was pregnant with George just in case.

Gay asian porn is so hot. Lots of licking, sucking, kissing.

[quote] Kei Komuro will sort himself out, try again and eventually pass either NYS's bar exam or maybe try elsewhere.

He doesn't have to pass the bar. Many people with law degrees never practice but can still go on to big things especially if they're well-connected.

by Anonymousreply 106April 19, 2022 7:44 PM

I’d gladly lick this bar exam failure.

by Anonymousreply 107April 19, 2022 8:01 PM

Monaco has male primogeniture, too. So has Liechtenstein.

by Anonymousreply 108April 19, 2022 8:07 PM

He actually looks and sounds quite bright.

by Anonymousreply 110April 19, 2022 9:00 PM

R104 It's not even male primogeniture (males before females regardless of birth order): it's male ONLY.

No woman can inherit the throne.

That's why the court rushed off to Akeshino's wife when it became obvious Masako was lousy breeder.

And didn't take chances and leave it to fate.

The Emperor's younger brother is next in the line of succession: not the Emperor's actual offspring, simply by virtue of being female.

As noted above, it would be akin to Andrew being Charles's successor if Diana had only had girls, and since Andrew only had girls, they would have been left out of the line, too, and it would still be Charles Andrew Edward. It would, ironically, out Edward's son, Viscount Severn, next on line.

Princess Mako, Naruhito's daughter, was ineligible for the throne the moment she was conceived.

by Anonymousreply 111April 19, 2022 9:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 113April 19, 2022 9:04 PM

Thanks r111. Even more limiting then. I wonder what would happen if they had the sitting emperor chose his successor, like King Hussein did in Jordan? Just make it a kind of free for all.

by Anonymousreply 114April 19, 2022 9:17 PM

Ancient Japan and ancient China too both had feminist/matriarchal aspects. Conflicting beliefs- Confucianism is anti-feminist but Daoism, also an ancient belief system in China, is feminist. Shintoism evidently had feminist aspects in the past too. Maybe the times will be changing again soon.

He is hot and obviously has high aspirations. Harry and Meg are bums compared to these two.

There's something so sophisticated about the Japanese Imperial Family, which is why they're my fav royals. Empress Michiko just oozes class and Empress Masako was a total babe when she was younger.

It pisses me off that Princess Aiko is being pushed aside for her younger male cousin. She is the true heir and should be the future Empress of Japan.

R99 - let me chime in. We (gay couple) earn about 1.3 million a year from passive income, and have a net worth of about 30 million. We live well, but I still take out the trash, clean up my dog’s shit, buy my socks and underwear at Marshalls, and shop for groceries to get the best deal. I suppose it sounds weird, but I don’t consider us “rich” by any stretch of the term, just kind of upper middle class and very fortunate. That sounds kind of self-satisfied and I have no illusions that it couldn’t go to shit somehow, but it’s not a fortune. I know…I know…boo hope for me…

Kei Komuro was a paralegal back in Japan. He won a scholarship to Fordham law for one-year LL.M program 2018. He then continued on for what should have been two years to receive a J.D.. But KK didn't graduate Fordham law until May of 2021. Maybe this was covered elsewhere in thread giving reasons why it took three years to complete his J.D. degree.

In any event maybe it was all too new a bit fast. Going from paralegal into L.L.M and onto law school.

This route is common enough for foreign trained lawyers, but comments in Daily Fail link R125 are interesting.

Mako has all or most of money in this marriage. Whatever KK has besides his salary as law clerk isn't generally known. But Mako has stated publicly last year when her husband failed NYS bar exam first time she would support him while he studied to retake again.

Couple live in an "luxury condo" somewhere in Hell's Kitchen, KK doesn't have that kind of money, so Mako and or her family must have paid. Until her US visa is settled and given a green card Mako cannot legally work in USA. So again it's highly unlikely this former Japanese royal is living in NYC on a law clerk's salary.

Far as one knows none of the professional licensing exams in NYS have limit on number of times can be retaken . You'd think after failing several times and or after certain period post graduation some sort of requirement mandating returning to class or something would exist.

Know of a few that failed NYS bar at least three times. Also know graduate nurses who failed NCLEX board exam more than several times, in most cases those retaking were out of school for well over one or even two years....

As someone posted upthread, there is quite a lot one can do with a law degree but not being admitted to any state bar. Some graduates of lower tier schools and others for various reasons just give up after failing bar exam even just the once.

And one was correct, KK did take advantage of OPT program, but time granted for him to remain in USA under that scheme is running out.

His current employer could sponsor KK for a visa, but they would be hard pressed to defend any sort of difficulty in finding American law school grads willing to work as clerks.

Given Mrs. Komuro's family, am sure strings are going to be pulled both from Japanese and American side of things. But then again that opens up a huge can of worms once word gets out.

I don’t want to knock this guy because I don’t know the extent of his English language skills.

That said…. since NY state adopted the UBE (Uniform Bar Exam—same shit that flyover states use as their bar) a few years ago, the NY bar has become a bit of a joke. As a practicing lawyer who passed both NY and NJ on the first go about 8 years ago (at a time when passing the NY bar still carried *some* prestige), generally speaking, you really have to be a bit of retard to flunk the current NY bar exam, especially more than once (assuming you’re an English speaker and matriculated from a legit US law school).
