Why do Americans call themselves Irish or Italian etc? Unless you or your parents are directly from those countries you are 100% American!
It is also really offensive to claim negative character traits are somehow based on a physical country you have absolutely nothing to do with!!

Depends on what you mean by hot-headed. If you do something to offend them, Italians will knife you to death without turning a hair. The Irish, on the other hand, will smile in your face as they slowly poison you to death over a long period, making it look natural when you finally kick it.
End result is the same, it's just that one takes a bit longer.

R1, I'm guessing you're not American.
When Americans says they are "Irish", "Italian", etc. they're not saying they are actually a part of those cultures. They know they are Americans.
However, America is a big country and has numerous subcultures. Some of those subcultures originated with immigrants from other countries. So, Americans just say "Irish", "Italian", etc. as shorthand to identify that they are descended from one of those subcultures.
To be honest, it's a little annoying when non-Americans squawk about this point. It's really none of their business.

In my experience, many Italians refuse to apologise, and have even told me they were raised this way. These are mainly Southern Italians, and Sicilians. I think a handicap or reticence to make an apology makes for more lingering resentment, or grievances. This sort of stuff is the type of baggage which makes people really explode.
I'd say Irish tend to be snappy, and more sassy, similar to Scots. Things sound and look worse than they really are from the outside. Tempers flare, and everyone makes up later.

Right R9, because the rest of the world lives for the pleasure of visiting Gabagool "Italians" and Yankee "Greeks", and Paddy and Mick "Irish", visiting their "homelands" of an often very uncertain connection, and insisting they may be cousins! How delightful.

I don't know why Europeans get so triggered at Americans describing their ethnic background. Especially if you live in a big city, it's not uncommon for people to inquire about your heritage, what languages you speak, etc.

Lived in the northeast for several years in an area with mainly Jewish, Italian and Irish Americans. Then the mid Atlantic and Midwest for about the same time. And very briefly on the west coast. I know this will go against the prevailing sentiments of DL, where everyone still resides mentally in 1962 but I have not noticed any disproportionate level of anger in either Irish or Italians. They did tend to be fairly direct but that's the northeast for you.

R34 We do because of DNA and I think the ultimate conclusion is we’re Americans. The results have multiple countries and you realize those countries are younger than the slave trade and you just realize it’s kind of pointless to identify with something that happened 300 years ago.
I feel like white people who have that “mixed breed” Scottish / German / Irish / etc mix identify as just American too. Except they’re not treated like foreigners the way black people are. Black Americans being Americans seems to still be disputed after 400 years here as we’re compared to Latino and Asian immigrants.

Let's move forward from 1987 DL
In 2022, the Irish and Italians are intermarrying at very high rates--often with each other--and the ethnic stereotypes that were prevalent during the midcentury period 50-75 years ago are much less pronounced. Yes, there are small enclaves here and there where these stereotypes live on, but they're the exception, not the rule

My parents were Italian immigrants and I agree with r38.
Also, I beg to differ that Italians don't hold grudges against their family. I had two uncles that lived next door to each other and didn't speak for TEN YEARS over one uncle's construction company being awarded a bid on a city job over the other uncle's company.
As a kid I would run around closing all the windows so the neighbors couldn't hear the yelling when they all got together. The reason for the yelling could range from something as trivial as an ashtray not being fetched quickly enough to someone being "disrespected" twenty years ago back in the old country.

Can't speak much on the Italians. But I'm from the south and I'd say the Irish are probably more hot-headed. The Irish are the ones you see in smiling in those old black & white photos of black people hanging from trees back in first half of 20th century America. Bryant is also an Irish last name. Roy Bryant is also the one who beat Emmett Till to death along with his brother inlaw. So based off that and knowing that most whites who live in the south are also of Irish decent. I'd say the Irish are definitely more hot-headed and angry.
They're the ones overwhelming pictured in those old black &white lynching photos from decades ago. They're also the reason why the south is so red politically. I'd say both the Italians and Irish are both trash and garbage through. They're history in both NYC and Boston speak for itself!
English Americans remain superior I guess.

So r39 you've never heard of subcultures former from ethnic groups in certain areas. For instance, Americans in Louisiana live a different life and culture than those in Boston. After a few generations those traits become a feature. Same with Italian or Irish Americans. They held onto certain traits from the ghettos and as a response to the rest of American society by their existence in the US. So you can say, it's he Italian in me which means a bit about how Americans viewed Italian immigrants that become a feature to Italian Americans.
So what Joy said is valid to American Italians. Plus, it's her heritage so fuck off.

My father, whose parents met in New Jersey after emigrating from Ireland in the early 20th century, learned to cook from his Italian next-door neighbor lady, who had emigrated from Naples around the same time. And he taught me to cook in a style we now think of as Italian-American. Meat sauce for spaghetti, chicken cacciatore, baked ziti, lasagne all'americana.
My Irish grandmother was a terrible cook. So was my mother. So my father, thankfully, did a lot of the cooking when I was growing up.
When I was old enough to cook for myself, I found the cookbooks of Marcella Hazan and Giuliano Bugialli, and I learned the cuisines of Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. There's nothing I love more in all the world than lasagne alla bolognese, made according to Marcella's recipe, with ragu alla bolognese, besciamella, and Parmigiano-Reggiano, instead of mozzarella and ricotta.
So, the Italians definitely win for cooking, and if that gets the Irish hot of head, well, sit down and eat, bitches.

Exactly. People from European backgrounds are all just lumped under the "white people" umbrella now. It's been more than 100 years since the big waves of European immigration and after several generations everybody is just 100% culturally American at this point.
I know this will make the bizarre anti-Italian trolls incredulous with disbelief, but in New England Italian Americans are indistinguishable from any other group of white people at this point. Most of them aren't even religious anymore.

Black (aka African American) is an ethnicity and identity. Judaism is also an ethnicity. Both groups stay close to their cultural identities regardless of how many generations they’ve been in the US. People ask about ethnicities all the time. I was at a party recently with immigrants from Turkey, Syria, and Croatia and they asked me where my family was from. I didn’t know what to say since my family came over here 250 years ago at least, from probably around ten different countries. I say I’m an American mutt. I definitely don’t identify as anything European although I know people that are equally as mixed that do. If you live in a big urban area full of immigrants, these conversations do happen. I’ve also had British people insisting that my name is British and being kind of pushy about it. I don’t really want to be British. Or Irish for that matter.

I've never had anyone ask me that question R99. Most people know its rude and nosy. Only in a place like NY that likes to think of itself as consisting of ethnic blocks would one even care.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | April 18, 2022 1:38 AM |
Perhaps you live somewhere mono-ethnic/racial? It is not uncommon at all in big, multiracial cities and really not that nosy and/or intrusive.

I’m in Washington DC. It’s recent immigrants who ask, not old plain Americans. , I think it’s interesting, you get to hear about places all over the world. I wouldn’t lie about it! My local bar is like the UN. I know people from Pakistan, Russia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Portugal, El Salvador, Argentina, Philippines, Sudan, Iran , China etc etc and the reason I know where people are from is because I’ve been told, it’s not a secret! And it’s not rude to swap stories about your life.

R103, when I was young and beautiful, men would ask my ethnicity and insist I had some of whatever their blood was. Maybe it was a come-on, knowing Americans are obsessed with our genetic makeup. Hence Ancestry etc.

In danger here because am wading in to something I know little about, being English rather than American ( and therefore equally a mix, probably, but further back in time.)
Anyway, here goes.
I have always been impressed that some US families relate culturally back to their European descendants who migrated, and want to continue to honour that. It’s continuity and a sort of respect, and a sort of anchoring point.
I would have thought. I can see it might get overbearing and artificial if taken to extremes though.

Italians were relegated to ghettos when they arrived. They were kept out of jobs and seen as troublemakers thanks to their pro-union stance. Groups that are pushed into ghettos have a strong cultural identity and for good reason. They depended upon one another.

by Anonymous | reply 126 | April 18, 2022 7:10 PM |
I grew up in New Jersey and I agree most Italians and Irish Americans are culturally just white. Same deal with Jews, Hungarians and Polish. Especially in the suburbs. Some do still pass on their culture but usually it's those from metropolitan areas who are insular, big on marrying inside and maintained connections to relatives in the motherlands. The Guido culture isn't Italian culture. It's more just NY/NJ party douchebag culture that includes every type of white people with a spray tan and jelled hair. A lot of obnoxious Northeastern qualities are stereotyped as "Italian", "Irish" or "Jewish" when it's more a densely populated area with a high income and high competition. The confrontational attitude is just an adaptation to a fast-paced environment and highly packed population.
Italians, Irish and others also immigrated to the South and culturally Southerners. I think actually Southerners of all colors are the most hot-headed due to the culture of honor which takes any slight insensitivity as a threat to a person's entire sense of self. Also the intense heat and religious oppression in some areas don't help.

I'm always entertained by threads like this. If there aren't Europeans whining that Americans don't have the same perspective as them, there are American 4chan/stormfront refugees whining about the thread not focusing on 'teH bLackkS!!11!!'.
[quote] African immigrants are completely different and act more similar to Northern Europeans or Asians in being more stoic and industrious.
r133, as someone who has worked and lived around them, they aren't stoic, especially when compared to Asians. As for being industrious, if that were the case, their continent wouldn't be filled with 3rd world countries and developing countries that are only developing because of massive foreign investment. Harsh but true. The ones that immigrate here do tend to be less apathetic and more driven than their racial counterparts from the Americas, but that same thing can be said about them in comparison to the Africans in their home country.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | April 24, 2022 6:43 PM |
R149 You ignore the fact that most Asian countries are not developed either (only South Korea, Japan and Singapore are developed) and the fact that African countries are less than a century old and were created by colonists who made lines based on which was which countries territory. There are so many different ethnic groups and tribes that created so many division that it makes it difficult to form a national identity. Immigrants in general are more educated, hardworking and often come from the affluent sphere. Most white Americans came here from when their European countries were still poor countries and would be looked at by the wealthy Anglo-Americans how we look at Mexicans today. History just repeats itself.
