There was some talent among the cast, but on the show the writing just wasn't there for them.

There's no need to defend either. Both were funny. Designing Women addressed more topical subjects and had more serious moments. Golden Girls ages better.

DW, like GG was very character driven (and I love them both, pretty much equally, although we won’t talk about DW seasons 6 and 7). The comedy was drawn from the way the characters reacted to what happened to them, and to each other. These are my top 5 favorite funny moments from DW (in no particular order): 1. Mary Jo wearing increasingly large fake breasts. (Big Haas and Little Falsie) 2. Suzanne (and by association, Charlene) cheating at Trivial Pursuit at the spa. (La Spa Sans Souci) 3. Julia tucking her dress up into her pantyhose on the fashion runway. (Full Moon) 4. Suzanne accidentally drinking Charlene’s breast milk from the office fridge. (Ep ?) 5. Julia’s freak out at Charlene and then at the jury in Miss Trial.

I'd like to offer some compliment to DW but it was never really funny. Not simply less funny, but not funny at all for the most part.

I am willing to have my mind changed though!!!

I felt they often changed the characterizations on DW -- over time and both episode to episode.

Designing Women was more plot-driven, as was to be expected given its workplace premise.
