A bunch of young, in shape actors rolling around wrestling each other. Plenty of shirtless scenes and homoertoic subtext, it's practically verging on porn. Also, it definitely needs a remake.
Was Vision Quest one of the gayest movies of all time?

Would have liked a gay porn re-make with the same cast (sans the ladies) made at the same time.

And Madonna in her film debut singing the #1 smash Crazy For You and Gambler
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 16, 2022 12:55 PM |
As a kid I remember setting up the VCR to record a Madonna special on Rage where they played all her video clips from "I Want You" backwards to "Everybody". I found myself rewinding and watching "Gambler" a lot, just to see the images of those guys, with one hand firmly in place inside my underwear.

R3 one of those guys was Jake Ryan from Sixteen Candles, Michael Scheoffling

Gosh, Daphne Zuniga was in so many of these movies, hey.
The weigh-in scene looks good. Maybe I should watch this movie.

I haven't seen this movie yet, but I have seen the clip of Madonna singing "Crazy for You" and "Gambler" live and forgive me, but she is pretty dire. Ballsy choice to film it live, rather than lip-synched. But it just goes to show she had a certain "something". I feel like in many cases nowadays other singers would've been memed after such a performance, or not taken as seriously.

lol.... if you wrestled in high school post-1985, you know this movie by heart. Linda Fiorentino was a hard sell as Carla, and it killed Michael Schoeffling's Jake Ryan appeal, but Shutes was always hot carrying that railroad-tie up and down the bleachers. Another movie the book is better, but it's a limited genre so you'll take what you can get; wasn't afraid to show the extremes of the sport.

OP Taylor Lautner was approached to do a possible remake about 13 years ago; it never went past development talks.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 21, 2022 9:57 AM |
I always called it Jism Quest.

That weight in scene along with the Footloose locker room scene got me through 1985
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 21, 2022 12:06 PM |
Due to some recent threads, I just watched this. Not great, but not bad. Thought Modine and Fiorentino looked too old. They didn’t really have romantic chemistry either. Good soundtrack. I had no idea Daphne Zuniga was in this too, I know they did Gross Anatomy together. She was really in a role during that time it seems. She was the lead in The Sure Thing as well.
It was a trip seeing Madonna. I kept thinking about the threads here. Aging sucks. Aging like Madonna quadruple sucks.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 27, 2022 2:27 AM |
Especially while Madonna is still alive to contribute to the soundtrack!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 27, 2022 2:41 AM |
I haven't seen it since it was newish, but isn't there a scene early in it in which a predatory gay man grabs Modine's junk in a hotel where Modine is working? I wondered why that was there. I can't remember it connecting with anything later.

Meant *on a roll*
R16, yes, that was at the beginning of the movie. He was delivering room service and the guest was showing him tai chi moves, then grabbed him.

[quote]I had no idea Daphne Zuniga was in this too
It's funny, I've been watching a few 80s horror flicks lately and she turns up quite regularly. I only ever knew her from Melrose Place so it was quite a surprise to see how much she'd done before.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 27, 2022 7:26 AM |
Yeah, Zuniga was mostly a film actress before Melrose, although she was also the earnest social worker in Lucille Ball's homelessness-related Emmy bait, Stone Pillow.
Here's a nice article from the late Roger Ebert about a funny encounter with Zuniga. I know exactly what Zuniga said to him that he misheard. He had described ANOTHER actress (the female lead of 1989's Spike of Bensonhurst) as "the most beautiful woman in the movies since Daphne Zuniga."

Matthew Modine said once that he would have been fine with a frontal nude scene, but it was a time in which such a thing was not done.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 27, 2022 2:25 PM |
It was rare enough to be noteworthy, but a few male actors in the early '80s did full frontal. Aidan Quinn in...Reckless, I think, was the name of the movie. Craig Wasson in Ghost Story. Gere in American Gigolo, of course.
I'm not counting blink-and-you-miss-it glimpses, like Cruise in All the Right Moves and Lowe in About Last Night.

I know this movie was released in 1985, but was it filmed earlier, like around 1983? It really has more of an early 80s look than a mid 80s look if you get me.

Fall 1983 in Spokane.

I wish that Madonna was in it more...
Why wasn't she?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 21, 2025 11:54 PM |
Matthew Modine in this was my pre-teen fantasy boyfriend. Cute, sweet and non-threatening.

None of that is true.

Because she can’t fucking act.
Next question.

Dennis Hastert probably jerks off to this film
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 22, 2025 1:36 AM |
The guy who played Shutes was a real life college wrestler who never acted before and has given interviews where he said that shooting this movie was hell for him as he had to dangerously lose 25 pounds way below his natural weight class during filming to better match Modine's size and frame. The nose bleeds were real occurrences during filming.
