Sir Nigel Hawthorne

He is one of my favorite actors.

Known as Sir Humphrey Abbley in Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister in the 1980's. Hawthorne graced the world with the acting prowess.

His performance in The Madness of King George is one of the best (and most underrated) movie performances of all time. He was outed and robbed of the Oscar that year. At least he won the BAFTA.

His others film roles include The Tempest, Marie Curie, Watership Down, A tAle of Two Cities, History of the World Part I, Firefox, Gandhi, The Black Cauldron, Turtle Diary, Demolition Man, Richard III, Twelfth Night, Inside, Amistad, The Object of My Affection, Madeline, The Winslow Boy, and Tarzan.

Unfortunately he died in December 2001. Imagine if he would have lived another ten or twenty years.

He was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company

Helen Mirren relates that he was inconsolable to be outed as a poofter on the eve of the Oscars.

R3 it really was shitty of the Americans to do that to him. That was his private and personal life.

by Anonymousreply 4April 15, 2022 5:31 PM

How was he outed?

by Anonymousreply 5April 15, 2022 5:34 PM

He never struck me as very interesting. I bought his autobiography, gave up on it and gave it to a friend (who liked it very much). The gay part is the only thing that makes him interesting and even that he's pretty boring about.

by Anonymousreply 6April 15, 2022 5:44 PM

He was fabulous in Mapp and Lucia!

by Anonymousreply 7April 15, 2022 5:47 PM

R7 I thought he might be gay the first time I watched M&L shortly after it was released in the US. His characterization of Georgie seemed beyond good acting to me.

by Anonymousreply 8April 15, 2022 6:18 PM

Didn't Georgie marry Lucia?

by Anonymousreply 9April 15, 2022 6:24 PM

R8 Is that a good or bad thing?

by Anonymousreply 10April 15, 2022 7:05 PM

I liked him as Martin van Buren in Amistad.

by Anonymousreply 11April 15, 2022 7:08 PM

R9 Not as I recall from the original TV dramatization. They almost did, but they knew it wouldn’t work (hint, hint) so they continued on as friends.

by Anonymousreply 12April 15, 2022 11:28 PM

R10 Neither. He portrayed what might have been called feyness at the time of the story, but he did it without making Georgie a total stereotype. Of course an excellent actor of any orientation could do that, but something set off my gaydar about him well before he was outed.

by Anonymousreply 13April 15, 2022 11:40 PM

R13 got you. He really was an excellent actor.

I could not imagine The Madness of King George without him.

"Loo-chaa!"

by Anonymousreply 15April 16, 2022 8:37 AM

The British tabloids outed him with the headling "Sir Bumphrey!"

God, they’re repulsive. Snide, homophobic abuse under the guise of “British humour”.

by Anonymousreply 18June 2, 2022 5:39 AM

Here is a classic scene from Yes Prime Minister on who reads which newspaper in Britain. Bernard's line is classic.

Very elegant

by Anonymousreply 20June 3, 2022 3:02 AM

Underrated and outed by the Americans.

by Anonymousreply 21June 30, 2022 1:08 AM

What would we do without the OP, who MUST tell us things we already know (all sensible gay people love Nigel) or never cared enough about to bother to learn about him.

Why, OP?

Need a purpose to your life or something?

by Anonymousreply 22June 30, 2022 1:11 AM

That Christmas movie (it may have been his final role) where he and Whoopi both play Santa is so fucken cute.

by Anonymousreply 23June 30, 2022 1:23 AM

One of my faves. Madness of King George so good.

by Anonymousreply 24June 30, 2022 1:29 AM

R22 Maybe I am trying to have intelligent conversations about art, history, literature, and science?
