I thought I was done with her, but this looks quite fun, even if she is skinnier. I’m getting Strangers With Candy, Easy A and a few other fun high school movie vibes as well, and heck if it’s on Netflix, why not tune in anyways. I have nothing to lose.
You really clicked on my thread then made a whole new thread of the same movie I literally just posted 15 minutes ago?

But why did she awaken from a coma with an Australian accent? Her parents don’t have accents. Rebel Wilson is fine as a character actress playing the kooky friend, but she absolutely cannot carry a movie. This will flop.

She thinner she gets, the more masculine her face becomes. And why does this American girl wake up from a coma with an Australian accent? Lazy cunt can't even put on an accent. Cate Blanchett she's not.

She has more weight yo-yos than Oprah and Jonah Hill combined, and none of the charisma. She keeps trying, and the world keeps saying "No."
Amy Sedaris tried this story, and it worked because she had talent. Garry Marshall Tried this with Drew Barrymore, and it worked. No one anywhere thought this would be a good idea. Except Netflix, and fuck if anyone knows why. No wonder they're going out of business.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 23, 2022 11:26 PM |
Totally, R8. That was the first thing I saw. This is a Never Been Kissed meets Mean Girls meets Pitch Perfect mash up. Like Adele, it also looks like Rebel gained some of the weight back. She is not as this as she was a few months back or this is the real her without the photoshop.

Because Rebel can't do an American accent. She tried to for The Bachelorette and it was a mess. Although that movie is underrated and should be a DL fave.

Rebel looks like Beanie Feldman/Feldstein/Feldhill whatever her name is after a makeover.
The appeal of Rebel is as the best friend who makes wisecracks. She should never be the main character.

Rebel Wilson pretty much revealed herself to be a cunt years ago when she didn't get a role in that female Ghostbusters reboot and whined up a storm about hwo the women in the cast were too old. Sometime after that was when she was outed for lying about her age.
I also read some other article where Brandon Scott Jones said his job was to "Rebelfy" the script and the re-enactment U Drive Me Crazy was his idea. Also, this article from 2016 stated that DL non fave Kate McKinnon was considered for the lead role in Senior Year and the main character's name was Ruby. It would be interesting to see how much was changed from the original script. McKinnon probably wouldn't have been great at playing a a 37 year old trying to be a prom queen. Maybe, she could have played the lesbian friend. Mary Holland actually pings to high heaven, but she's married to a guy.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 15, 2022 1:33 PM |
Is this the first role Rebel is actually playing her age?
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 15, 2022 1:36 PM |
R53 Rebel is 42. She's five years older than her character. Mary Holland, Sam Richardson, and Zoe Chao are close in age to the adult versions of the classmates. Justin Hartley is a few years older than Rebel. He kind of looked haggard in some scenes.
Angourie Rice who played young Stephanie is a pretty young woman not a fugo like Rebel Wilson. I actually think Kate McKinnon would have been more believable as an older version of Rice. But, again McKinnon would have likely sucked in the role.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 15, 2022 1:53 PM |

Angourie Rice is a brilliant actress who will easily have her choice of roles and follow in Kidman, Collette, Blanchett, Watts, Robbie's footsteps.
She was one of "the girls" alongside Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst in Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled and played Betsy Brant in the 3 Tom Holland Spiderman movies.
And she was the lead in Ladies In Black, a period drama set in an Australian department store with Julia Ormond and Friedrich from The Sound Of Music. It's a well made film set in the late 50s and Rice win the AACTA best actress award.
And she was brilliant in Mare of Easttown.
Her scenes in Senior Year aren't bad. Rebel Wilson's are hideous. I'd be interested to know who filmed their scenes first. because they seem to be playing 2 totally different people. The characters aren't even similar.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | May 15, 2022 2:51 PM |
Rice pretty much played the character as a ruthless popular kid type who used her dorky and unpopular friends to her advantage. It was kind of like female version of Zack Morris from Saved by the Bell. Rice is attractive enough to be believable as a teen bitch/queen bee type. Rebel Wilson has never had an attractive face and I think the weight loss has somehow made her face look weirder. Her version of the character came off as unattractive goofy woman desperate to be a cool kid..
by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 15, 2022 3:28 PM |
I have to wonder if Rebel Wilson hates that she can't do a believable American accent. Some screenwriters and directors aren't always going to want to adapt a screenplay to include an actress who can't fake an American accent.

It doesn't matter "who went first," you figure all of that stuff out before you start filming. The two actresses work together with the director (or on their own if the director is useless) to take an approach to how the characters speaks, moves reacts, etc. Obviously they only do it if it really matters. If you just have someone in a flashback for one scene as a child, it's likely going to matter less, but in this case, it matters plenty since Rebel is essentially picking up right from where Rice left the character.

The movie had potential, there were so many threads they didn't finish. No one was fleshed out. Like what was the point of Justin's character? Or having the best friend turn out to be a lesbian? It didn't go anywhere.

The lesbian best friend subplot was a weak plot device just used to teach the shallow main character that high school wasn't fun for everyone. It could have been written better though. The characters had gone to high school in the early 2000s. I graduated from high school in 2003 and homophobia was still quite common with both students and teachers. It would have been believable that someone like Stephanie would have shunned a lesbian friend like Martha back then. It was sort of dumb how Stephanie tried to act like she wouldn't have been homophobic in high school. We all know she would have been. It also clear that even as an adult, Martha seemed to be closeted and lonely. Some lesbians are probably mad about how that subplot is handled. Mary Holland who plays Martha co-wrote that lesbian Christmas movie Happiest Season with Clea DuVall. There were some lesbians who hated that a straight woman like Holland was DuVall's cowriter on that movie. Holland is probably be again on the shit list again for this movie.

She has a kind of a long face, very square jaw and even a square smile. She is unusual looking, but I think she looks much better for having lost weight.
To me she’s just not lead material or funny. It would be interesting to see her do non-comedic supporting roles. I wonder if I would find her any good in that type of stuff.

by Anonymous | reply 74 | May 22, 2022 10:24 AM |
I saw it and it's fine for having on while you do something else. While Rebel has lost weight, she's not that slim and her face does look weird. The filled lips and botox do not help. What it lacks is any sort of romance, so there is nothing at stake. Rebel must have the best PR team in LA to get work after all the duds she's been in.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | May 22, 2022 12:22 PM |
R73 Mary Holland is pretty much a character/supporting actress type. Holland is part of the improv scene in LA and is friends with people like Lauren Lapkus and Betsy Sodaro who plays the cholera ghost on the show Ghosts. These are improv women who are usually odd looking or average looking, but they have enough sense to mostly stick to supporting roles. I actually think Mary iis more talented than overrated hack Kate McKinnon. Mary was some on a short lived sitcom called Robbie that starred Rory Scovel. Sasheer Zamata who is a former SNL cast member was on that show and was sort put as the female lead. But, Sasheer was so bland and Holland was pretty entertaining as a weirdo Southern girlfriend to Scovel's character.

R82 Yes, Rebel really exposed herself as being out of touch while bragging about her private jet and traveling from one exotic location to another on Instagram during the pandemic. Skiing here, shopping there. Then, to add insult to injury, at one point she claimed that she was "finally" able to go on a vacation (from what?) despite having spent a year posting photos and video of herself on private jets travelling from one exotic location to another as if she didn't remember having done so (or figured her followers were too stupid or short of memory to remember all those posts). Fake bitch who trots out the same handful of anecdotes every time she does a chat show.

by Anonymous | reply 95 | May 23, 2022 12:45 PM |
Michael Cimino will be fine. He's smart. He is represented by CAA and they're notorious for dumping young actors in garbage movies for the exposure. But they have already sat him down and developed their "long term plans" for him. He needs to be careful, though. Because CAA wants their money, and their judgment about what's best for your career is often flawed.

She's a dumb-humor wiseass slapstick comic like Will Farrell, Adam Sandler, Amy Schumer, Mike Myers. We know what to expect.
You either like the humor or you don't. I like Rebel Wilson more than most of her peers in this territory.
Speaking of Mike Myers, I thought the premise of his new show sounded funny and so I turned it on but didn't even last a half episode. It is BAD.

R108 I like Will Farrell and most of the time, I don't mind Amy Shumer in spite of herself. But I cannot stand to look at Sandler or Mike Myes. I especially cannot stand Sandler. Ugh.

I made it through that Netflix film, Senior Year. It was awful but this actress, Rebel Wilson, is not without talent. The film’s plot got ahead of itself and some of the progression seemed arbitrary, like writers screamed at each other to have material included. Some jokes landed flat and many were oddly dirty and not so funny at all (particularly a cheering move called “lips to lips”). Near the film’s conclusion, Rebel’s character removes the bottom of her prom dress and ends up in a satin one piece high cut bathing suit-like remaining outfit. She dances around all the other fully-clothed characters, but looks really ungainly. It’s really odd, like they pranked her, getting her to do some pretty humiliating dance moves. She’s a pretty game broad, and some of the adult actors are familiar players, and they all tried pretty hard. But the film is a desperate and hackneyed concept. It’s cringe-worthy. High-definition and tight focusing shows a lot of unflattering features on these poor actors. I hope they have career insurance.

She does this annoying thing where she stretches out jokes that are completely unfunny. An example would be where the adult mean girl has just finished apologizing to her at her doorstep. Rebel tells her to wait so she can give her something. She spends the next minute flipping the bird and waving it around while she makes dumb remarks and noises. The scene drags on way too long. I felt embarrassed for both actors.

I hate how they had Tiffany act like a normal adult for 5 minutes before turning her back into a bitchy cliche.

It seems that Brandon Scott Jones didn't really work with the two screenwriters who wrote the first version of the script. There's an interview where he basically admits he had to change the script around to make it more for Rebel Wilson. The other two guys listed as screenwriters haven't spoken about the movie's release and the interviews they have done were in 2015 sometime after they sold the script and it appeared on 2015 Black List.
The original version of the screenplay is easy to find on scripts.com It's not any better than the final product. The character's senior was set in 1997, the main character's mother didn't die and the mom wasn't Australian. The character of Martha wasn't the main character's best friend and as an adult she becomes a cop and is described as being fat. Those screenwriter probably envisioned as Rosie O'Donnell type lesbo. The Blaine character is an asshole as an adult and wanted to get into politics. Blaine and Tiffany's daughter isn't an SJW type.

R114 That is so interesting. You really can sense competing expectations in the production of this film.
I was actually confused by the father and the friend with the lake house. Because they picked up Rebel’s character together at the hospital, at first I thought they were married.
Some jokes seemed ad libbed or “tested” in an early cut of the project, and then left into add “edge” and appeal to audiences who watch Netflix content by David Spade, Adam Sandler, and others like them.

She seems like a hot shit, unafraid to take risks on stage and to be outrageous and to laugh at herself. I feel so ashamed for liking the course and vulgar earlier version of this actress than I do the slim, trim and grim version today.
Maybe she will find a way to stay interesting, but it will take some smarts and knowledge of the public appetite for comediennes. There is a strange alchemy to gender, appearance, “hotness” in comedy. We have some very homely successes, and some pretty handsome failures. It is very interesting to see who stays famous and who does not. I think of past hosts of Talk Soup, various MTV programs, E Television.
The shelf lives of (most) performers are short. I secretly hope this character, Rebel Wilson, has shortened her career. It’s not merely changing her appearance, but mis-messaging the importance of being thin, getting thin, and her year of health that may be a simple case of bariatric surgery. Tabloids ran so many images of her at different phases of her weight loss, possibly paid media. That glib narrative might work against her in the next phase of her career, if in fact there is one. She could use some goodwill right now, a really cool project.

Ooh shit, I meant to say “I secretly hope that this character, Rebel Wilson, has NOT shortened her career” d’oh

She should remake some of Sandler's movies, like Grown Ups and The Wedding Singer.
Play into your strengths, Rebel.

I noticed that as well. Netflix execs probably had a hand in changes with the script. I'm surprised people like Elon Musk haven't used this in anti-woke rants.

The movie is a shitfest and she is a very limited talent, if you call it that.

These snippets from her Wiki are more entertaining than the movie.
[quote]Wilson grew up in the suburbs of Kenthurst, Parramatta and Castle Hill. She attended (the fee paying) Tara Anglican School for Girls. She completed her Higher School Certificate in 1997, achieving a ranking of 99.3, including second place in the state in Food Technology.
[quote]Wilson has three siblings: sisters Liberty and Annaleise (who uses the name "Annarchi") and a brother, who uses the name "Ryot." Liberty and Ryot appeared on the first season of The Amazing Race Australia in 2011, where they were the first team eliminated.
[quote]Wilson has stated that her great-aunt was Lillian Bounds, who was married to Walt Disney until his death in 1966. Despite Wilson standing by this belief in court, it continues to be disputed by genealogist Dale Sheridan

R121 If she graduated in 1997, that would make her 43 years old. Doesn't she claim to be in her 30s?
by Anonymous | reply 122 | June 1, 2022 7:23 PM |
R122 I think she stopped lying about her age after she was outed some years back.

[quote]Michael Cimino was quite charmless here, like a nut seller from Punjab.
I didn't think he'd work again after he directed "Heaven's Gate."

I agree Cimino is totes adorbs, but what the actual fuck were th e outfits he was forced to wear? Am I supposed to believe a typical high school guy would wear them? Am I?

I don’t think she will be a celebrity for long.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | June 13, 2022 6:56 PM |
R127 I agree. I think she will finally have a fall from the grace that will stick. I doubt her relationship with a woman will last.

Half the talent she used to have.
Fat is funny.
A former fat person with skin hanging like a starving bloodhound is not funny. Unless it falls down.
They should start paying her half of what they used to.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | July 16, 2022 4:07 PM |
She wasn't all that funny as a fat person either. I wouldn't be surprised if turns out she has sleeping with women for years, but was paying them to keep quiet.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | July 16, 2022 4:09 PM |
Rebel is Australian isn't she? And I remember when she first hit the scene I never thought she was funny. She had a puerile, obnoxious sense of what was funny, and she was pushy and aggessive. I saw her twice on TV and couldn't stand her. How she ever got this far making movies, producing movies, I will never know. And Senior Year was a shit mess.

R131 I suspect Wilson will be doing a lot of straight to streaming type movies for years to come.
