My favorites are Amy Madigan's pouty boycott and Debbie Allen's grandiose side clap
It was a big deal who would and wouldn't clap.

Amy Madigan.
Now that's a name I haven't heard in about 20 years.
Whatever happened to her?

Wasn’t Vicki Lewis dating Nick Nolte at the time? I remember she didn’t clap.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 11, 2022 6:01 AM |
yes r2. Neither did Nolte.

Apparently certain people really do get the faces they deserve, R5 ...

The biggest shock here isn’t that Laine Kazan used to be a man, it’s the fact that she was actually talented enough to have been given an Oscar!!!

He was right. There were stealthy Communists in Hollywood that needed to be called out. They're not so furtive now, but their hubris is gonna cost them votes.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 11, 2022 6:33 AM |
Same crowd would have given a standing ovation to the surviving old line Hollywood communists.
And Laine was hot in the 70s

Wasn’t Amy Madigan married or partnered with Ed Harris, who for sure did not applaud.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 11, 2022 6:42 AM |
I remember Kirk Douglas did not applaud.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 11, 2022 6:46 AM |
Ronnie? Is that you?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 11, 2022 6:48 AM |
yes r10. Watch the video.
Only Harris/Madigan and Nolte/Lewis are shown not applauding. Who stands and who doesn't is more interesting.
I bet a lot of people left the room to avoid the choice. This is the year of Cate vs. Gwyneth and Roberto Benigini. You can't find them in the crowd though. (and Gwyneth had that bright pink dress.)

r13 r14 I thought Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell didn't clap or have I rembered that wrong? r8 Who in modern Hollywood do you think is a communist?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 11, 2022 7:33 AM |
Kurt Russell stood and clapped. Goldie isn't seen in the video.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 11, 2022 7:35 AM |
I remember Kathy abates stood and applauded.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 11, 2022 7:36 AM |
I remember that Nick Nolte didn’t clap. He remained, respectfully, in his seat.

M even got Gummer to stand with her.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 11, 2022 7:22 PM |
Even young Mamie stood and clapped.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 11, 2022 7:58 PM |
Was I even there? Wasn't I in a shitty Kazan film? Well?!
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 11, 2022 8:04 PM |
Will Smith got more claps.

I read somewhere that Kazan only named the names of people already blacklisted. I also read that he named Paula Straasburg, at HER suggestion. She figured she worked in NY Theater and if she’s blscklisted in Hollywood-no big deal.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 11, 2022 8:19 PM |
Kazan also named Nazi sympathizers. But Hollywood only nailed him for naming Communists.

Gadge!
(Love his nickname, hate his craven snitching).

I always wondered what the audience reaction was for Jane Fonda's win for Klute. She says thanks to those who clapped (implying some didn't.) They don't really show the audience so you can't tell.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 12, 2022 4:07 AM |
I see Helen Cunt stood and applauded.

Amy Madigan actually has an Oscar nomination, I just learned.

Even if you don't like the man he was one of America's great talents. On stage and film. I highly recommend his autobio. It's a great read. It was silly not to stand for him when people have always stood for shits. It's Hollywood for god's sake.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 5, 2022 9:59 PM |
I remember there were some that didn't clap or stand up (Nolte, Ed Harris, Madigan) some that clapped but didn't stand up like Spielberg, and those who did both (most of them).
I have a love/hate relationship with Kazan, but I do think his speech was pretty classy.

Just shut up about my grandfather already.

Elia Kazan....born Elias Kazantzoglou in the Fener district of Constantinople (now Istanbul), to Cappadocian Greek parents, originally from Kayseri in Anatolia.
Doesn't Amy, Ed and Nick like Greeks?

You know I read that he and Tennessee Williams, who were good friends , would double date (with a woman and man respectively) and they'd fuck their partner side by side on twin beds. I always thought Kazan may have been a bit bi curious , because no fully straight man would be up for that if he wasn't.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 5, 2022 10:52 PM |
He admits watching men making love in his book. But then claims his curiosity was satisfied so there was no further need to watch or indulge. Though why a straight man would even be curious to actually watch gay love making raises questions.

I loved Amy Madigan in Field of Dreams. She was also good in Gone, Baby, Gone but that's the last movie I remember seeing her in. I thought she was married to Ed Harris at the time who was also in the film.
