my guess is the original was too sexy, they wanted something innocent yet kookie.
why did they feel they needed to change the theme to i dream of jeanie

I like the I Dream of Jeannie graphic.

They got a better budget. That opening looks cheap.
Besides, it's not in color.

As much as I liked this show as a kid it sure is cringe through the eyes of the modern world 😬

The change from Richard Wess' jazz waltz theme to the more swinging pop Hugo Montenegro composition coincided with "I Dream of Jeannie's" switch to color in the second season. Sidney Sheldon wanted a fresh, contemporary look and feel, so he chose the Montenegro theme since it better represented the Swinging '60s mood.
in 1965, "I Dream of Jeannie" was one of two shows still in b/w on the "All Color" NBC network. NBC brass didn't think the show would last more than one season so they told Sheldon not to waste his money with color.

The earlier version sounds like an old-school 50s theme song. New version is ICONIC!!!

A sitcom about a concubine? Not in our Christian home!

The second theme was much fresher and unique, a big improvement.
