“Tokyo Vice” on HBO Max is utterly undone by the casting of Ansel Elgort

The show needs you to accept the premise that Ansel Elgort is smart. It does not work.

FWIW I liked Elgort in West Side Story and have found his easygoing, lunkish charm appealing in other movies, but not everyone can play everything and Ansel Elgort cannot play smart.

He can never stop this cool-guy posturing and acting insouciantly aloof. It's kind of ill-suited with the role. He needs to loosen it up, be natural.

I’m really liking it and him in it.
