I’d never thought about how many memorable hits this bitch had. One late summer afternoon my boyfriend and I somehow found ourselves in Rolf’s, which is a German restaurant lit by Christmas lights and just over-the-top decor. The bartender was playing Dionne Warwick’s greatest Bacharach hits. We sat there quietly singing along - and getting mellow. Bartender knew what he was doing, because we wanted to hear what song came next and if we would know it. We always did. It was a long, wonderful afternoon.

One of the things I most treasure about Dionne Warwick is the disparity between the classiness of her interpretations and the tackiness of her general behavior. Her singing is so tasteful and simple--so rarely self-indulgent or cheesy--, but she is such an hilariously awful person.

by Anonymous | reply 85 | April 30, 2022 1:36 AM |
No doubt she had many hits- I’ve often wondered why aside from the fact that she got to record great pop songs- why is another thing. She can hold a tune and deliver a lyric competently- but he voice has expressive limitations, her vibrato wobbles off pitch (like Liza and Merman). She does not have power and she can’t really croon. I put her in the category of Diana Ross- another ok voice of little distinction who got her hands on good tuned. Perhaps each did well because their voices while not great, were distinctive?

Dionne is a singing legend, a master singer, and a master musician, R90 and R86 have you two been living under rocks all these years? The problem is with you not getting Dionne not Dionne Warwick. Bacharach needed Dionne just as much as she needed him.
Dionne had to teach Promises, Promises to Orbach. Bacharach had to bring Dionne to the theatre to teach the music. Orbach said "How do you sing this shit" when confronted with the music.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | May 1, 2022 1:26 AM |
Unpleasant personality notwithstanding, Dionne has one of the best voices in pop music. so what if she doesn’t croon? She’s delivered numerous hits. I don’t particularly like her based on what I know about her. But I can’t deny her impact on pop music and culture.

by Anonymous | reply 134 | May 4, 2022 11:55 AM |
Jay Graydon’s production made Dionne’s voice sound cold and metallic. Not a good match at all. YMMV.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | May 4, 2022 1:11 PM |
She was losing some her range by the 70s---all that smoking. Her post Bachrach-David stuff is mostly forgettable. Her combo of gospel and classical training turned out to be the perfect match for their odd time signatures and often awkward phrasing. Some of the arrangements seem more dated than their time now---too many horns and strings---but she had both the depth and the discipline to put those songs over. Her later stuff is pleasant enough but basically easy listening pop, with little challenge to her or sophistication.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | May 4, 2022 1:23 PM |

Perhaps next year.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | May 4, 2022 2:03 PM |
R137 perhaps never ever. She’s too rude and unappreciative to receive an award.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | May 4, 2022 3:37 PM |
She does not say 'that's all you're getting' at the end of each show. I've seen her a dozen times, and she doesn't say this.
She indeed just says goodnight and walks off the stage, not doing an encore. That is her trademark, and has been that way for many decades. Not sure why.
She starts with a medley of hits, does some banter with the audience, does some full length songs, more banter, does a Latin version of San Jose, plugs a recent album, and then does two or three ballads at the end.
Her voice is certainly aged from smoking, and just age (she's 81). You can hear her struggle through some of the notes during the first half. But for the last few ballads, she actually sounds pretty close to the old voice (takes a while to get her warmed up I guess). Then she gets out the stage door of the venue, into the back door of an unassuming brown station wagon (her requirement), and off she goes to her hotel.
If you show up late, she might call you out. When we walked in during her medley, she finished the song, and said to us "You folks in the back...what happened? Someone forget to bring a watch??" Then the music kicked in to the next song and everyone laughed, including us.
She is a diva and a legend through and through.

Aretha had a similar career. Her 60s songs are classics and then in the 70s and 80s she moved with the times and recorded contemporary material that was more pop. Aretha also had great songs in those decades, but they were different than her 60s catalog. Both Dionne and Aretha couldn't stay in the 60s sound forever, they had to move on.

Both versions are great, Dionne and Aretha each brought their own unique styles to the song.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | May 6, 2022 5:30 AM |
for the posters here saying Dionne didn't have power to her voice, that's just flat out wrong. I don't know if she actively chose to sing in a more restrained way in official studio recordings or if she was directed to do so by producers but her live performances were usually better showcases of her abilities. From the mid 70s to early 80s she actually displayed more of how great a singer she was. By the mid 80s though the years of smoking had started affecting her voice and she began losing both volume and range.
She opened her voice up while singing the "Solid Gold" theme song. The last 2 minutes are quite difficult. Diana Ross could never sing like that and I'm shocked someone compared Dionne's vocal abilities to her. There's no comparison

by Anonymous | reply 163 | May 6, 2022 7:31 AM |
She totally influenced Whitney. Without Dionne, there would be no Whitney on the charts.
Whitney used to follow her cousin Dionne around on tour and learn from her. She was directly tutored by Dionne. Also, Dionne became close with Clive Davis in 1979 when Dionne joined Arista (thanks to Barry Manilow's involvement), and it was Clive Davis who ultimately got the first look at baby Whitney and signed her up immediately. Clive ultimately made Whitney a star.

Didn’t Dionne Warwick tour with a fellow DL icon, Connie Francis, about ten years ago?
I wouldn’t call it a favorite, but since it hasn’t been mentioned yet, I like her version of these Cole Porter songs. Her “Dionne Warwick Sings Cole Porter” album is kind of bland and unmemorable to me, but I like this one.

Maybe that’s why the Hall of Fame keeps snubbing her.

No. They were on a double bill (it was not a tour) and did not even perform together. They were separate shows.
Dionne is not that dumb to appear with CF.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | May 6, 2022 7:14 PM |
R166, nobody really knows, since Whitney and Dee Dee are both gone. Dionne emphatically denies that it ever could have happened, FWIW.

R165 Yes. Dionne appeared with Connie Francis in LV. Dionne was broke. Connie still has millions. Connie held the show. Dionne was smart to appear with Connie. Connie is the better entertainer, despite her voicing faltering with her age. Connie's live Cole Porter medley is a masterpiece.

R170 Bad business deals, not paying taxes, hiding out in Brazil from the US government, and her association with fraud, such as the Psychics! Not smart at all. That is what happened.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | May 7, 2022 3:18 AM |
On the other hand, Connie Francis went on multi-million dollar spending sprees, bought several multi-million dollar homes, owns a good deal of her music, owned two publishing g companies to receive royalties from record sales and publishing, and once again took v=control of her career in the early 1990s to go on to make millions more. She was always a top notch attraction, and even when her fantastic voice began to falter and went on the falter, her charisma and entertaining skills worked for her. Early in her career, her voice live was phenomenal.

R168 well, she did look awfully butch. I wouldn’t be surprised tbh. Not that our girl Dionne should be penalized for that in any way.

I believe Bacharach and David made most of the $$$ off of all those 60s songs. Dionne didn't make much in comparison. Most of 70s were a pretty dry period for her, her albums and singles didn't do well with only a few exceptions.

I am now 44 and I still only really dig two songs of hers- Alfie and No Night So Long (despite its laughably trite lyrics)
But her Alfie is really just perfect.
She really had a damn wonderful voice. And I am fascinated by her teeth. She had jacked up teeth that were so perfectly jacked that they were so easily capped to make her have that perfect row of oversized choppers on that weird as fuck zig zag jaw she has going on. This was DECADES before veneers. Some dentist hit the jackpot using 1970's caps. Obsessed with her jaw/teeth. LOL!

R184 There was no opening act. Both were top-billed and Connie went on second. Connie was billed as the top selling female vocalist, and Dionne had nothing against appearing with Connie, nor did Connie with Dionne. You are making things up.
by Anonymous | reply 195 | May 8, 2022 2:34 AM |
R184 Connie also brought musicians to her concerts, although I am not sure if she did so to that one. Frank SInatra's conductor became hers when Joe Mazzu passes away. Sinatra. Jr. sometimes filled in as conductor if Doug Walter's was unable to do so. Bobby Grausso was her drummer, When I saw her at Resorts in AC, Boots Randolph payed sax. To say that Dionne would not appear with her is ludicrous. Connie was bigger in record sales and concerts than Dionne was for many years. She had much more charisma and charm with her audiences, as well. She was a way better entertainer. They were interviewed together on a number of TV shows at that time. However, they would not have made a good match singing together due to different singing styles.

Here are reviews of the Grand Divas Show:
May 21 concert went well, audience enjoyed it, Connie and Dionne were happy with it, Eric Floyd was estatic it all pulled together, Joe Renda was great on drums (with thanks to the late great Bobby Grauso who recommended Joe), and several of Connie's devoted fans were all thrilled. This is the Grand Divas show produced by Eric Floyd. Maggi Albisani (impersonating Connie) and Tim Dunn (impersonating Dionne) did the opening act where they exchanged comments of each other's song. Some people actually thought they were the real Connie and Dionne. See Maggi Albisani page for additional info.
May 22 concert was another sensational success, second night built upon success of Friday's concert. Connie really belted out a performance this night. Also featured was Connie's boyfriend Tony Ferretti gave a short performance as Tom Jones, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Ray Charles, and Frank Sinatra during the 15 minute break between Dionne's and Connie's shows.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | May 8, 2022 2:57 AM |
review continued:
Friday show began with Maggi Albisani as Connie and Tim Dunn as Dionne (yes, the best impersonator for Dionne Warwick is man). They exchanged comments about each others songs. They were not on Saturday show, don't know about Sunday (I left Sunday to see Jane Russell in SF).
I would say Connie did good on Friday but seated on far right next to stage I could not hear Connie strongly over the music but she definitely went on with the show. Connie began with I'm So Excited, followed with Unchain My Heart, then monologue, hits medley, Italian Favs, etc. ending with God Bless America. I heard she hasn't sang Sinatra songs for some time, I like for her to them as I think these are her greatest musical strengths and such songs, along with Gershwin/Porter standards are what made me a CF fan. Connie put out more effort on God Bless America for a good closing of Friday's show.
The Meet and Greet was "fast" as they line up everyone in a single row to go backstage, examine tickets to see them marked as M&G, then issue a Hilton Backstage Pass. People would then pose with Connie and Dionne, hotel staff photog takes the shot then the people would leave to get their prints later. No time for autographs or chit-chat. However, I gave both Connie and Dionne each a book of San Jose historical buildings as both have sang the Hal David song of my hometown (these were the only SJ books I could find at bookstore). I also gave Connie and 45 print of volume two of Guy Consterdine articles (and also vol. 1 given in 2007, in case she lost it). Connie went to her room shortly after.
Now comes Saturday: I may have missed part of Dionne's show but obviously none of Connie's. They needed about 15 min between these shows to move Dionne's band setup and replace with Connie's band. During this time (on Sat), Connie's boyfriend Tony Ferretti did a medley/impersonation of Tom Jones, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Ray Charles, and Frank Sinatra. I've seen pictures of Tony and figured he must be an Italian crooner, this performance proved he really is.

Her audiences were varied, and she was a top draw into the 2000s, although you do not want to admit it. She was always a top notch act whether you like it or not. Dionne was never as consistent and she turned into a major joke.

Connie Francis is a nostalgia act. Her repertoire of recognizable hits stops at 1964. That's a million years ago.
After her hits in the 1960s Dionne recorded "Then Came You", "Déjà Vu", "Heartbreaker", "That's What Friends Are For" ...all hits and all still sound contemporary.
During that time, Connie Francis made not one album of note.

R251 Nostalgic act? I agree with R257. I saw Connie Francis in 1967, and then again in 1985 at Resorts, and then again in 1992. There was nothing nostalgic about her 1985 or 1992 performance. Sure, there was a medley of hits, and that is expected from any artist who had that many hits, but there was also contemporary songs, ethnic songs, and standards. All three shows were sophisticated and contemporary.

Connie Francis was off the radar in pop culture after the mid 60s.

R269: You're sounding ridiculous now trying to pick a fight with me when nothing I said was controversial or dismissive of Dionne's talent or discography. Dionne is a legend, a precursor to Whitney, and one of the greatest vocalists in Pop music history. But by the 90s, her image and credibility took a major hit due to The Psychic Friends Network. That's not being dismissive of her, that's just spitting facts.
And I ain't no damn millennial. I'm a Xennial.

D admits that she overspent on luxury items during her career, and was terrible at saving money. She always assumed the money would keep flowing in, but as stated above, she didn't have any passive income setup (publishing rights, etc.), so it was indeed foolish - and she did have two boys to raise (without child support from her husband), so she turned to many desperate 'business ventures'.
If she had played the game a bit smarter in the 60s, and was a bit more frugal in the 70s and 80s, she wouldn't have felt compelled to do Psychic Friends. But here's the thing, D really believed in psychics, and still does. She was close friends with Linda Georgian, who was her personal psychic. Linda sold her on this bullshit, the hustler that she was. They both made tons of money before it went kaput. But let's be clear here, D really thought the psychics worked, moreso than Linda even, and that the product she was pushing was legit, because she was a customer herself - in the worst way.
Ultimately, not the savviest businessperson, of course.
You could say a lot about how black folks, and how women, were treated in the music industry, and how she had an uphill battle to make anything work for herself. You could also say that her talent, charm and skills helped bridge the gap a bit, but ultimately her longevity and her failures fall squarely on her shoulders, and she owns it. She's now downsized to a small rental house in Jersey, close to family. She still tours, at 81, and makes enough to pay the bills (the ones that she hasn't expunged through bankruptcy proceedings). The other thing that's interesting about her - terrible diet. She eats only comfort food (not much of it though), but she doesn't eat seafood or salads at all. She is a carb and grease woman. She doesn't drink much, and her marijuana habit is not as bad as it appeared in the media. She still smokes cigarettes though, but not as much as she did before.
I'm a huge fan, and am acquainted with one of her sons, so I've felt a real kinship with this woman over the years - although she doesn't know I exist.

R287, D raised her sons well. They are both polite, well spoken, and better at managing their business affairs than their mom is.
R284, she is downplaying her reliance upon psychics in this interview, so that she can move on from the oft-repeated question. She is still very much into psychic phenomenon, and did believe in the product she was pushing or else she wouldn't have done it.

I do admire the way Connie Francis pulled herself up from near bankruptcy from million dollar spending sprees in the 1980s to the accumulation of wealth from her 1990s concerts. She did write a few of her songs, but she also owned two publishing companies whereby she earned publishing royalties as well as recording royalties. I also admire how she formulated the Victims Rights Laws, altered hotel security laws, how she advocates for the US Vets, and participates on committees for mental health. I also admire how she pulled herself together mental health-wise to live a very comfortable, happy life.

Dionne had to be a tough broad coming up in this business as a black female artist in the mid 60s (she started before that touring in a gospel group). I remember reading somewhere that even after having achieved fame, during the late 60s/early 70s, Dionne couldn't even shop for clothes in certain stores because the clerks would refuse to serve a black woman. Well, Aunty Dionne didn't take that shit lying down, she wrote to the corporate headquarters about it and got the staff fired or reprimanded in the least. Yes, Dionne the black Karen, would not take shit from anyone. And I guess that would make her a cunt to some

Debbie Allen got a saleswoman fired from an upscale Beverly Hills boutique when she and a stylist were searching for a gown for her to wear for her EBONY Magazine cover. The saleswoman hemmed and hawed, finally saying that they weren’t sure if the shop owner would want one of their gowns on the cover of a black magazine! This was in the eighties and Debbie was enjoying success, coming from FAME and coproducing A DIFFERENT WORLD. This was the eighties! And this cunt of a saleswoman had the nerve to say that? Debbie threw a fit until the manager was brought out. The saleswoman allegedly was fired on the spot and Debbie wore her gown on the cover of EBONY.

It didn’t make headlines when Muhammad Ali was denied service in a St. Louis restaurant shortly after winning his Olympic Gold Medal. Like many blacks from that time, some didn’t complain. That album cover is terrible, but the album itself is outstanding. Some of Dionne's best work.

Omg worst album covers ever during most of het 70s releases. It’s like they didn’t give a godamned.

R389 that’s an embarrassing album cover photo. It would have been rejected by the sears catalog for being subpar.

Oh, her teefuses at r114…

R93 Dionne is regarded as a total classless bitch to as many if not more people.

R22 that’s her best song along with the video you posted.
“Walk On By (While I Shit)”

Don't Make Me Over, Make it Easy on Yourself, MEssage to Michael, and my honest to god all time favorite: Alfie. God I love that song SO MUCH.

This is a great live version of Alfie from the 60s. Tons of people recorded this song, but nobody did it better than Dionne.

Here's Alfie. and I will add one more to my list of favorites: Anyone Who Had A Heart.

I enjoy Dionne’s version of “Alfalfa”.
“Don’t Make Me Smoke Your Weed” is a perennial fave Dionne performs at home.

That Aretha Franklin song is all wrong for Dionne.

Where My Mouth Has Been

Her teeth fascinate me. Why she has those massive chompers and strange LARGE upper jaw are because her dentist basically stuck caps on all the wacked out teeth and made a giant straight line of teeth. He really didn't file them down as just stick large caps over each one.
Today there is a little more artistry.

Miss Warrick will be performing at the local fairgrounds on the 19th. I may pop by to see her

Doja Cat did her dirty with that Satanic video.

Any song that doesn’t feature Dionne and her Newport Cigarette-stained voice is always a favorite! She’s sucked more tar down her throat than a faggot who drown in the La Brea Tar Pits.

Dear ones, little did I suspect that while I was on my fabulous summer tour, "Falling in Love & Other Things," throughout Nunavut, Canada, people here were dee-faming me. But I am accustomed to the envy, especially from people such as Patti who are now known only for diabetes commercials, cheap baked goods and being dissed by poor dead Re.
I love Canada. For some reason I'm always the only one never bothered by the fog of mosquitoes. Funny.
Now, my real reason for fucking condescending to be here. If you love my old stuff so much you should buy my latest CD! My goal is reach three digits by October 1. Buy a unit, or risk my wrath. Shit.
And all the edibles taste like blubber up here. I've made big bucks distributing my famous Maui Wowie Warwick's Curated Blend. Timing is everything in re-tail. But now I'm stuck chewing on what seems like bubble gum that came out of a mackerel's asshole.
BUY MY NEW BRILLIANCE!

Shit. Fucking internet. I have to run it with a bicycle generator thing up here, while the Eskimos laugh at me in a cloud of Maui smoke. You can imagine what I'm wishing.
So that was I at R413.
Now I've got a gig at the Breakfast Bingo Hut.
