OH the 80s so fun!
I REALLY need to watch some of this series this weekend. I like Lyonne, so it should be enjoyable. This should make for some nice new content. I've been re-watching "Mary Tyler Moore", & its spinoffs.

It dropped today. Anyone watching? I loved the first season, and am a bit worried it'll be another disappointing case of a self-contained show that didn't need a second season.

r3 It still has the feel of an experimental film done by an undergrad but now with a bigger budget.
it's watchable... even enjoyable but like the first one. watching it once is enough. and maybe again in a few years, if there's nothing else on.
I would have liked to see some other elements from the last one carried over into this.. which was a little disappointing. I'm not sure how much the character is growing than just being reset back to square one.
the 40 year jumps are a bit annoying especially quantum leap vibe. . . it needed more lesbian if it was going to show her in other women.

I remember liking this show, but it's been so long that I've forgotten how it ended.

It ended with her realizing that her guy friend is also traveling the multiverses like she might be, but the first season is a very quick rewatch if you need it - less than 4 hours.

I like it but it’s such a different show than season 1. Like I Love Lucy to Here’s Lucy.

I liked it too, even though it has evolved into something else. Then again, I have a thing for stories about time travel. I was pleasantly surprised to see that Annie Murphy had joined the cast.

Wow. So no one is watching this.

I thought young Ruth looked familiar!

Watched the first episode. I didn't really like the she's-now-her-mother conceit. But maybe it will grow on me.

I wish they had done more with the Nazi gold train.

I'm planning on marathoning this tonight.

Charlie Barnett is soooo cute.

Annie Murphy really steals the show.

I think I liked this season better than the first.

Lyonne is such a dead ringer for my sister; it's uncanny. Same hair as well, except my sister's is almost black. I'd not known of her before this thread, and immediately sent screenshots to my mum, and sister. My sister is not in agreement, nor is she amused for some reason! I'm going to have to watch this now.

I don’t really understand what’s going on in this series but I enjoy Natasha Lyonne and any supporting cast that includes Chloe Sevigny, Elizabeth Ashley, Annie Murphy, Lilas White and others.

Liked the first season, but as was said above, I'm not entirely sure a second season was needed. Read article in the New Yorker about Lyonne, her history, and the writing, directing this second season. It was pretty much a vanity puff piece, unusual for the New Yorker.
Watched first episode of season two. I like Lyonne, a great character actress...but it seemed she was trying too hard in the first episode. Her gravelly.. Eh! Eh! like an old Brooklyn man kvetching at the Universe. I thought the direction was wooden and clumsy, and the writing was also just a vehicle for some hip-wit. I'll keep watching - the art direction alone is seductive. But not expecting it to get much better than the first episode.

What was Alan’s storyline? I thought he was gay when introduced in the first session and was surprised that he was straight. Then in this season he swaps with his grandma and falls in love for this guy. Then, when he returns to the present he’s all “no homo” about it and was only trying to make his grandma happy.
I thought for sure he was going to realize the reason he’s so miserable was because he’s been living a lie.

I read the New Yorker profile on Lyonne (who I like a lot) and Leslye Headland apparently had to get off season 2 as the show runner because she said that Lyonne was too difficult to corral and the narrative was too disorganized.
Watched the first episode of season 2 and you can feel her absence. Someone needs to structure things so it’s not just a fever dream from Natasha Lyonne.
Not sure I’ll be able to get thru the second season. Seems like she’s playing a caricature and no one reigned her in. Really liked the first season.

Loved the first series, got too confused with aspects of the second series towards the end and ultimately lost interest.
The going back in time as mother/grandmother was a good premise.
SPOILER ALERT but why didn't Alan use Google to find out what happened to the German student from 1962.

Lovely to see Annie Murphy turn up as young Ruth.

I have not watched the show, but I absolutely love the styling for Natasha Lyon. It fits her perfectly. I've seen the posters, billboards, and interviews - she looks fabulous!. After the American Pie movies but before OTNB wasn't she in fairly dire straights - a homeless hereon addict? I'm glad she is doing so well.

Both actresses playing Ruth were just stellar. I don't know if it's because I lost a mother-figure not long ago, but I haven't gotten that attached to or moved by a TV character in a long time.

The music is good, as are the actors, but this shit is incomprehensible, and I love every minute of every season of Twin Peaks.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 2, 2022 5:50 AM |
They really over complicated it this season and I never got a grasp of the time travel/ world building here enough to understand what was going on and feel like I missed a lot. Some stunning visual sequences though, especially the flooded arched spaces at the end.

Ended up finishing season 2 and it got better as it went along even though I agree it was quite hard to follow.
Really love Lyonne even though she’s nuts, I think she’s brilliant. And Charlie Bartlett is adorable.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 2, 2022 9:50 AM |
Her crazy is part of her brilliance. She's got a mind that's bouncing off the walls. It's fantastic to watch! I hope it gets a third season, agree with the other posters that there is so much more to Alan's story and they can do virtually anything they want with Nadia because Nadia is always watchable.

While the central device was a bit opaque at least they didn’t try to explain it to much. I understood what was happening, if not the why of it. It was certainly ambitious.
But the pleasure of the 2nd season is in the asides and indefatigability of Lyonne’s character who is witty and very erudite. Plus the stellar cast.
I’d rather watch something ambiguous or a bit challenging than something explains itself or worse isn’t even credible and is mostly contemptuous of its audience. Season 2 of Russian Doll may not have always been as obvious with its intentions as the 1st season was but the time-travelling forays were interesting in themselves, especially back through different periods in Berlin; the rummage sale of belongings of the Jews was insightful and moving, and overall the series’ ethos of the strength and endurance and especially the significance of women in our lives was in itself refreshingly unique, subtle, compelling and heartfelt.

I am boycotting this show until the war in Ukraine is over!

Loved the music they used on the show - I assume a lot of that was coming from Lyonne too.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 3, 2022 1:53 PM |
R31 very well said, thank you. I didn't always get it, but it still managed to move me. I hope we get more.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 3, 2022 6:08 PM |
This made me feel a bit less ambivalent about the season.

Do any of the characters on the show have a job? It’s like they can all just hang around doing whatever they want.
