It really must have some significance, because it's an unusual piece of jewelry, and features quite prominently in that shirtless scene.
He was wearing it under his pajamas, too.
And most men of that era (1950's) would never have worn a neck chain with such a huge pendant. So it must mean something.

Newman looked like a walking statue of David in this. He had balls playing an obviously gay-coded character. I mean the fact his character is indifferent mostly to Liz's seduction and obsessed with his dead "friend" could not have been more obvious. Tennesse Williams still felt the movie was too sanitized. Imagine if he had his way.

It was a hell of a lot more obvious in the original stage production than in the sanitized movie version. Newman and Taylor are wonderful together, but the movie's attempt to explain away Brick's obsession with Skipper as something other than his being gay ends up making no fucking sense in the final screenplay.
