Inspired by the 1976 novel by Anne Rice, Interview with the Vampire follows the story of a tumultuous relationship between two vampires Louis de Pointe du Lac and Lestat de Lioncourt
First Look at Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire on AMC Created for a 'Modern Audience'

Did Rice know this was in the works? Did she approve? I know she was disappointed in the Cruise/Pitt casting.

Did the people remaking this ever READ the book? My guess is no, and the seemingly lost significance and importance of Louis being tangentially involved in the slave trade also strips some depth from the story.

r2, based on the pics, I'm assuming this is more an "inspired by" adaptation rather than a faithful interpretation of the tale. Which doesn't necessarily make it any better....
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 6, 2022 4:32 PM |
Pretty sure she (and her son) was involved before she died
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 6, 2022 4:34 PM |
My guess is that having Louis be a white man who was a slaveholder and owned a plantation would be too controversial in our current cultural climate. AMC just didn't want to go there, hence the complete overhaul of the character.

I'm REALLY disappointed in the casting, OP. I'm a huge, huge fan of the Vampire Chronicles and fear that R3 is correct. AMC's adaptation is going to live that liminal space between the actual book and some twenty-six year old producer's idea of how to revitalize it.
The casting is patently absurd. Eric Bogosian as Daniel Malloy? Malloy was practically a kid in the book, and the "woke" choice of Jacob Anderson as Louis sets my teeth on edge.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 6, 2022 4:42 PM |
R3 I know that's the case, the question was more rhetorical in nature.
Also, Why not make a film version of Lestat and just let themselves be 'inspired ' by something that hasn't already been done?
Or remake Queen of the Damned (never seen it, can't think of anyone I know who has, so would be almost 'original').
I'm just tired of the remakes...

I rather have the Mayfair Witches tale explored than a rehash of this shit.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 6, 2022 4:49 PM |
You and me both, R8, if they're going to botch it. I wouldn't mind seeing The Feast of All Saints done either.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 6, 2022 4:54 PM |
Claudia has also been woke-casted.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 6, 2022 5:04 PM |
Honest question: why is it always "woke-cast" in one direction? Does Hollywood think there are only 2 ethnicities in the world?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 6, 2022 5:12 PM |
I’d love to see a young Japanese actress playing Claudia. But that’s not what’s on the current menu of our times.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 6, 2022 5:16 PM |
It looks AWFUL. The book is fantastic, if they weren't going to do a faithful adaptation then they shouldn't have done it at all.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 6, 2022 6:48 PM |
The ruined The Haidmaid's Tale as well-- what's next?

How is that going to work with Armand? Unless they make him some flavor of demisexual non-binary transmasc.

Every relationship these days HAS to be interracial. Two white people involved with each other is now seen as offensive racist.

Im relieved they didnt turn Louis into Louise, Lestats negress love interest. O well, at least they dont SPARKLE.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 6, 2022 8:14 PM |
They should've done the Sleeping Beauty chronicles.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 6, 2022 9:11 PM |
I'm more excited for the Mayfair Witches/Witching Hour adaptation that's upcoming.

Lmao such flawed logic.

Anne and her son author Christopher were heavily involved in this, for those of you questioning - it's a shame for Anne that she didn't get to see this released before she passed away.

this looks shitty.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 7, 2022 9:34 AM |
I will watch. Looks like they got Lestat right. Her vampire books became boring to me after a while, so I’m also more interested in the Mayfair witches adaptation. The Witching Hour is my favorite book by Rice.

In the book he was 31/32 (born in 1953, book takes place in 1985). He gets turned in 1985 at that age. Ironically, Bogosian was also born in 1953. So, unless they're changing his turned age from early 30s to late 50s, this is ridiculous. Christian Slater was 24 when the film was shot.
As for Jacob Anderson being cast as, what is essentially, a Black slave owner. This just reinforces the "Africans sold their own into slavery" argument that is a common tactic used by the alt-right to shut-down conversations about slavery and racism in America. So...good job, I guess?

You know what would be impressive? If writers/producers spent more time creating new stories with a diverse cast of characters, beyond just black and white, instead of changing white characters to non-white to fulfill some diversity checklist. Anne Boleyn ( a real person) changed to black for a TV series was one of the most ridiculous. This has turned into a trend of tiresome overcorrection. It also implies that there are no interesting stories about non-white people (of course there are and many come from non-Western history), so they have to appropriate white-centric stories for their woke interpretation.
I'll always love the first novel in The Vampire Chronicles, but I'm not interested in seeing this because they'll probably sanitize the story so much that it will lose the elements that made it interesting and also faithful to that time period.

This is, by far, the most insulting aspect of this practice. And what's worse is that we're expected to "be grateful" for what are essentially the table scraps of Whites. It's not too dissimilar from times of slavery when we, quite literally, would receive table scraps and had to make do. Pig feet, chitterlings, pig snout, sweet potato pie instead of pumpkin, all of that was a result of the slaves getting what the slave owners didn't want and having to be creative.
This same behavior being reconstituted into Hollywood's casting decisions due to a skewed idea of "diversity and inclusion" to meet their quotas makes my blood boil.

It looks terrible, and I won't watch it.
Why not create an entirely new story if they're so unhappy with the original one?

That reminds me of when Disney's THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG was released in the late 2000s. A regular black poster at the IMDb forums was complaining that it was just a white European fairy tale revised with black characters.. She would have preferred that Disney had adapted instead MUFARO'S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS as their first black Disney Princess. I remember looking it up because I hadn't heard of it, but it was a cherished book from her childhood (as I'm sure it is to many African-Americans).
It's a Cinderella story set in an African kingdom. Also, it has supernatural elements. The young, handsome king is a shape-shifter, but you don't find that out till the end when he finally chooses a wife. The main character is Nyasha, who is a kind and generous person and is able to communicate with the animals in typical Disney Princess fashion. The antagonist is her mean, selfish full-sister, Manyara, who is like Cinderella's Stepmother/Stepsisters and treats Nyasha like her personal servant. Both young women reside with their widowed father who is also caring but oblivious to Manyara's cruelty. In the end, Manyara gets her comeuppance and Nyasha becomes queen.
That's pretty much it in a nutshell. I agree that Disney could have adapted that instead. One main reason why I think they didn't is because Nyasha doesn't wear a long, poofy dress.

Wow, as Polanski's character said in Le Carnage, the wokes will make people join the KKK.
Isn't the major characteristic of a vampire not to be just white, as in Caucasian, but very pale. As pale as a vampire.
Look, I watched the Moonlight and liked the fact that the cast was all black, because it was genuine and forcing white characters in would have been false.
If the context is white I expect white casting. As some woodoo practicioner is black, the Vampire is white. These shitty woke products are just unwatchable.

Trailer. Premieres October 2nd.
People are already nervous because of the liberties taken with the source material, plus the historical part being set in 1910.

There are obviously only three stories left in the world.
Something about a superhero with a tragic past.
Something about a former CIA officer uncovering something shady.
And something about teen actors doing whatever while the camera gawks at them and attempts yo turn them into a brand.
