by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 6, 2022 2:12 AM |
Jada and Will are absolute trash.
The fact that Will was not escorted out and arrested is a stain on the Academy they will never - and should never - recover from. The two of them were treated like the King and Queen of Hollywood and got the best seats in the house, and they behave repugnantly, with no regard for the Oscars, the nominees and winners of that night, and of course, Chris Rock.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 6, 2022 2:16 AM |
Rock should've pasted on the bug-eyed open mouth Buckwheat expression and kept it on until he was backstage.

A true sign of how elegantly Chris handled that was he easily could have had Amy Schumer come out after and say something scathing, because Chris and Amy are close friends, and instead she said something mild and kept the peace. Chris has a lot of friends and they’ve made a few comments but have largely stayed quiet. I suspect he’s told people to chill about it. But I still hope he gets his revenge somehow.

WHO CARES
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 6, 2022 2:21 AM |
To be fair, it was hard for anyone to comfort Chris right after the incident because he had to present the Documentary award. Rushing the stage to check on him and comfort him would have messed up Questlove's moment even more than it was messed up. We actually don't know what was said to Chris or by whom, once he walked backstage after that.
But reports are that he left pretty quickly and went right to Guy Oseary's house, where he stayed until after 2:30 a.m. and got plenty of comfort and props from people like Guy, Woody Harrelson, and Sascha Baron-Cohen. There's a photo out there of them and Chris looks surrounded by supporters.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 6, 2022 2:26 AM |
But Chris has a sad and vulnerable side anyhow, typical nerdy, vulnerable comic. And it WAS sad to see the look on his face when the blow happened. I'm certain he thought Will approached to pull some ad hoc prankster hijinks, the way he leaned in and smiled expectantly. And then when he reared back he looked so hurt. It was like little Oliver Twist hoping for porridge and getting boiling water thrown in his face.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 6, 2022 2:34 AM |
Will was immediately comforted by Deacon Denzel (cheater) and Queen Tyler Perry, and of course white enabler, Bradley Cooper. None of them went backstage to check on the victim.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 6, 2022 2:35 AM |
A good revenge would be Chris hosting the Oscars next year, and Will banned.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 6, 2022 2:36 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 6, 2022 2:44 AM |
Chris Rock has had his issues and he's probably a teensy bit on the spectrum and all, but he's an intelligent thinking person. He's a writer and a creator. He's made it on his brains and his wit, like Woody Allen and Spike Lee. He's created a ton of intellectual property straight out of his brain. Will on the other hand, is a meathead.

I've personally moved on from this. I knew what I thought of it the instant I saw it. I didn't have to wait for social media to tell me how I felt. On some strange level this slap seems to be George Floyd 2022. From what I've seen online, the ramifications are just beginning.
As I've mentioned on this site, every thirsty social media whore has clocked in. But really, who gives a fuck what they think? It's obvious what happened. I don't need an influencer to add to any information.
I was wrong when I concluded this would be a ten minute news story that would fade as events carried on. I can't tell you how glad I am to see some sense of decency prevail. It confirms my shaky opinion that most people are in favour of order, as well as paying for a crime you commit.
It's about fucking time.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 6, 2022 3:22 AM |
The slap incident confirmed that the Academy Awards & Hollywood are like high school. (Steve Martin said: high school with money.) Will Smith was the prom king and Chris Rock was in the science club or yearbook committee.
I hope Chris Rock did have friends supporting him that evening at the after parties. Wanda Sykes said that Rock apologized to her and she said for what?

R47 Rock is just as much of a bully as anyone, he just happens to be a man of small stature so people feel bad that he got smacked. Will Smith is a looney asshole and the joke was totally benign and the assault is uncalled for but Rock hardly deserves sympathy.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 6, 2022 5:41 AM |
But Chris wasn't bullying anybody in this incident. So if his remarks were "totally benign, and the assault was uncalled for," and he's a man of slight build, it's not out of place for people to react with sympathy. People are imagining how they would feel. Which is, awful. Though, he recovered himself and took up the baton really quickly, much better than I would. Of course, handling bizarre developments on the spot is what makes a live performer a pro, and he's a pro.
This is giving me the urge to re-view that Youtube of Keith Richards not missing a beat or batting an eye in mid-concert as he un-slings his guitar and uses it to whack a crazed fan who gets up on the stage and goes for Mick . . .

Vivica A Fox and Carson Cressly were hosting Wendy the week after "The Slap" and Fox made an interesting observation. She said what they should've done--INSTEAD of being so offended by what Chris Rock said--is to look at each other and go "Ooh, that's a good idea."
by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 6, 2022 12:39 PM |
Chris Rock, like any good comedian, can make some offensive jokes, but he falls in somewhere in the middle. There are a ton that are more offensive. And I don’t think Jada should be punished/ostracized more than Will Smith. People assume it’s always a conniving woman behind the actions of men, like Macbeth, but mostly it’s just asshole men reacting poorly because they’re assholes. Jada rolled her eyes, but unless she told Will Smith to punch Chris’s lights out and force fed him drugs so he was susceptible to suggestion, she’s not to blame with what happened. That’s on Will Smith entirely. He could be henpecked, but plenty of henpecked people don’t react with violence.

by Anonymous | reply 66 | April 6, 2022 1:25 PM |
Chris Rock's comedy is abrasive (see the "and three white guys" thing he said when announcing the award, something he very obviously scripted) and as such he's not going to get much sympathy.
He went out of his way to defend both Kevin Hart AND Tracy Morgan when they were under fire for being homophobic assholes, and his own 2008 special is full of homophobic jokes.
That's why I don't think most of this Chris Rock defending on DL is from gays, it's from the straight interloper trolls.
And we also seem to have one of those interloper trolls pretending to be a Chris Rock hater, using every racist slur in the book (and one I think they made up) to make it look like those who don't like Chris Rock are psychotic racists.
Anyway, it's really weird to be seeing about a million "fuck that homophobic Denzel" and "fuck that closeted Will Smith" and not one single solitary person mentioning how Chris Rock is a big ol' homophobe himself.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 6, 2022 1:40 PM |
Chris Rock himself ruffled Academy feathers during his first go-round hosting years ago, when he called the Oscars "idiotic" onstage. He now looks like a far-seeing sage for that one
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 6, 2022 1:42 PM |
Chris Rock is an abuser, why am I supposed to feel bad for him?
by Anonymous | reply 69 | April 6, 2022 1:44 PM |
R50, nope.
Chris is a COMEDIAN!
This is what comedians do, cap on people in the audience. It wasn’t even a nasty joke. It was a total soft ball.
Will was 100% wrong and in my opinion, Jada has emasculated Will so much publicly, he finally lost it and went off on Chris because he was projecting the way he sees things at home.
I betcha there’s tons of belittling and even domestic violence behind the scenes at the Smith residence. Not sure who does what to whom, but I’m almost certain of it.
The Smiths are now trashy AF in the eyes of the world. And Will should have been cuffed and escorted out, as he would have been anywhere else had he done this in public, like in a restaurant.
He is responsible for what he did, but I believe Jada egged him on and personally? I’m pissed at her, because she humiliated her husband on her BS shoe for everyone to see. What woman does something like that to the man she claims to love? I know of not one woman who loves her husband or BF, and then fucks him over for the world to see.
Just gross. They both need professional help, asap.
Respect to Chris Rock all the way. A huge internet hug, too. Chris came from a rough childhood, and never did I think I’d see the day where someone would mimic that childhood for him on a national or global stage.
People, you grew up with fucked up parents? OK. MANY of us did. But you do NOT get to stay fucked up and expect the rest of us to be OK with you running around, violently projecting your unresolved childhood issues on others. Not acceptable in any way, shape or form.
This has nothing to do with race. It has to do with boundaries that we’re crossed in the worst and most dangerous of ways.
Violence only begets violence if you choose not to get help and CHANGE for the better.

Sorry R56, but even if the celebs are "ass-kissers" he got little to no public sympathy even outside of that room because Chris Rock isn't well liked.
He's funny at times, he has had some great bits, but pitting him against someone like Will Smith means he's going to lose out because beyond this incident, Will is well liked.
That is the simple solution.
Also as R67 said

That's why I don't think most of this Chris Rock defending on DL is from gays, it's from the straight interloper trolls.

I would say it’s debatable whether Will Smith is well liked. Many of us have been on to his and Jada’s lavender marriage phoniness for decades. King Richard was a flop when it was released in theaters. Most people I have talked can’t even get through it or won’t watch it. And Will is certainly not well liked now.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | April 7, 2022 2:35 AM |
R83, no one really knows Chris Rock much. People basically consider him funny and likable. I think people liked Will Smith as well, but after the Oscars? He’s epically disliked. It’s questionable if he can come back from this.

Nah, his rap career hits, "Parents Just Don't Understand," "Summertime," The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air + years of reruns made him a millennial staple. His movies, Independence Day, Men in Black, Bad Boys, Wild Wild West made him a star.
It's not debatable whether or not he was well liked. For a time, he was inarguably "A" list and could put butts in theater seats.
Or as R91 wrote while I was writing this
[quote]he was very well like in the mid/late 90’s to mid 2000’s
He's been coasting on that ever since, until the past few years when he started putting his and Jada's business in the streets which has lead to this.

So naive. In Hollywood it's not who you like, it's who you know. And being buddies with Will Smith will pay out a lot more than Chris Rock. That's why they all were so busy felching Will after assaulting some guy on stage.
R83 ="Oh, I hope Will's hand is ok, I hope his feelings are not hurt, that mean nasty comedian deserved to be physical assaulted."

Before and after the slap, not many gay men liked Smith, nor did anyone who doesn't like mindless mainstream garbage.
Rock had this to say finally about Tracy Morgan: "Tracy morgan is a tad off we all know that so when tracy says something i usually don’t take it anymore serious than i would a statement from gary busey or flavor flav .when i first heard the statement i thought it was offensive but it also reminded me of my father saying ill kill you if you ever bring home a white girl but after reading everything tracy said . wow i get it that shit wasn’t called for and i don’t support it at all."
Smith has always been insufferably full of himself. Rock, not nearly as much ever.

There was a roast of Pamela Anderson, of all people. I don't know why. But it was pretty low down and dirty. She just sat there and took it.

[quote] Where were the asshole celebrities to comfort him like they did with Will Smith?
Hollywood celebrities hate black men

Because they are all trouble R102. See Will Smith.

Estimates are that over 15,000 people have been slaughtered in Ukraine, with numerous women having been raped and executed. But let’s keep losing our shit over a celebrity slapping another celebrity.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | April 7, 2022 8:44 AM |
Bullshit. It's not REMOTELY debatable whether Will Smith was liked prior to the slap. People have LOVED Smith for decades. My parents love this guy.

My condolences

[quote]Because they are all trouble [R102]. See Will Smith.
He only slapped someone who insulted his wife. He didn't attempt to bludgeon police officers to death to get to the VP to hang him and then to MoC to kill them because white men don't actually believe in democracy. Or threaten to kill over a mask in Costco to go buy fucking hot pockets. You know, like white racist assholes like you. So I guess your ilk are all trouble, too.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | April 7, 2022 5:26 PM |
Why did celebs back in the day take the shit that comedians like Rickles dished out at them? The roasts he took part in were BRUTAL!
by Anonymous | reply 113 | April 7, 2022 7:13 PM |
R60 just spit out word salad with offensive, racist slurs mixed in. This is what trolls do best.
by Anonymous | reply 114 | April 7, 2022 7:35 PM |
R104, there is room in our minds to care about simultaneous issues. If this is offensive to your sensibilities, ignore the thread and don't post. But of course you did post.

It will be interesting to see what happens April 18. WS ruined the night for all those people who worked so hard and for Chris Rock for some snarling pitbull over nothing.
by Anonymous | reply 116 | April 7, 2022 10:12 PM |
R116, I actually think people need to be reminded of that. Not only did he commit a violent act, his action overshadowed the wins of everyone who came after him. It became about him, not the other winners. They were at the pinnacle of their careers, and he ruined it. They were gypped.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | April 7, 2022 10:15 PM |
Exactly R117 all that work and preparation was highjacked by his inappropriate and criminal action.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | April 7, 2022 10:27 PM |
He should be banned from attending and reviving any nominations for 3 years.

It wasn’t a SLAP slap.

It’s actually happening tomorrow. They moved up the date.

I am expecting them to do nothing.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | April 8, 2022 1:52 AM |
For Smith to regain membership to AMPAS, they should require him to star in the sequel to Six Degrees of Separation. This time he'll have to be shown in a closeup, kissing a man for a full two minutes.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | April 8, 2022 4:20 AM |
Everyone knows that Will Smith took his carefully curated, genial, friendly persona and shattered it into a million pieces on the floor of the stage when he irrationally slapped Chris Rock over a very mild joke.
He fucking snapped.
Maybe he can play villains from now on but he suicided his good guy persona. It's weird.
I have always liked Chris Rock and I hope he has plenty of people to support him.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | April 8, 2022 4:36 AM |
It's like if Jimmy Stewart slapped the shit out of Bob Hope because he made a joke about Lucille Ball.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | April 8, 2022 4:37 AM |
Where is the unaired video? There were a million cameras in that room. I bet it’s embarrassing to Will and Jada.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | April 8, 2022 4:40 AM |
I wanted to slap Bob myself, but Gary talked me out of it!
by Anonymous | reply 130 | April 8, 2022 4:43 AM |
R129 That's the video where Jada kicks Rock in the balls.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | April 8, 2022 12:34 PM |
He needed a big hug. Everyone was too busy kissing slappy the slapper Smith's ass.

[quote] Would you have said a "grown woman" if the host was Tina Fey who Will had slapped? Do you think he would've stormed the stage if a female host had made the same joke?
I don't know. Do you think people would call it heartbreaking and act like it was the most horrible, humiliating thing to happen, if it was Tina Fey or some other woman? People here would just laugh and brush it off. They certainly wouldn't be pretending Will Smith is the devil, like they are now.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | April 8, 2022 12:42 PM |
The Devil made him do it...
by Anonymous | reply 135 | April 8, 2022 12:45 PM |
He shouldn't have hit him, but I'm over this love for Chris Rock. He's not a good guy, has said a lot of horrible disgusting things and not as a joke. He has gossipped about and trash talked black women endlessly. He's a piece of shit.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | April 8, 2022 12:49 PM |
In this case, it would have been nice to ask Chris...are you OK? How are you doing?...at least.
