It's very hard to drive a car on the other side of the road when you're not used to it, but there are almost no safety measures to keep people from doing it either legally or in terms of car rental rules. People do this all the time (both Americans driving in the UK and British/irish people driving in the US), and accidents do happen as a result.

People from countries where driving is on a different side of the road also regularly die crossing the street because the traffic comes from a different side then they're instinctively used to checking.
