Comedian Jerrod Carmichael comes Out before hosting SNL
by Anonymous | reply 108 | December 11, 2022 11:50 PM |
Who?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 1, 2022 7:03 PM |
love it
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 1, 2022 7:06 PM |
Wasn't "Jerrod Carmichael" Lucy's son on "The Lucy Show"?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 1, 2022 7:16 PM |
Wow. His short lived tv show was pretty good. I'm surprised by this one.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 1, 2022 7:19 PM |
He had an eponymously named NBC show for awhile
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 1, 2022 7:31 PM |
His TV show was one of may favorite TV comedies of all time. It was hilarious and very politically incorrect. I love him.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 1, 2022 7:35 PM |
Good for him. More gay male comedians/actors should come out.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 1, 2022 7:35 PM |
R1, he is pretty well known
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 1, 2022 7:36 PM |
If he never guest starred on Columbo, Datalounge never heard of him.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 1, 2022 7:40 PM |
On Jerrod's short-lived sitcom David Alan Grier was insane and hilarious as the father. This show was never given a chance, while crap shows remains year after year after year.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 1, 2022 7:50 PM |
Hehe r9. It’s amazing how people here have totally opted out of modern pop culture, since 1989.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 1, 2022 7:59 PM |
R11 he’s not very well known
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 1, 2022 8:34 PM |
[quote]Jerrod's short-lived ... was never given a chance, while crap shows remains year after year after year.
I needed to eat, too, you know?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 2, 2022 12:03 AM |
I heard from a source that he was nice to people on the crew as was Tiffani Haddish.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 2, 2022 12:21 AM |
[quote] If he never guest starred on The Love Boat, Datalounge never heard of him.
There! FIFY, R9
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 2, 2022 12:34 AM |
His sitcom was good, shabbily treated by NBC.
He is cute! Would bang. Wonder if he has a bf?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 2, 2022 12:37 AM |
His HBO special is on at 9 pm tonight and tomorrow at 10:15 pm
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 2, 2022 12:40 AM |
[quote] If he never guest starred on Murder, She Wrote, Datalounge never heard of him.
FTFY, r16. If we want to get technical, Dame Angela’s show is the one we love to discuss here
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 2, 2022 12:50 AM |
I never saw his sitcom, but I did see his two - I think it was two - previous HBO specials.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 2, 2022 12:56 AM |
I'll use the left hand this time.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 2, 2022 1:12 AM |
Ugh, why couldn’t it be this guy, so sexy, so hot, so cocky.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 2, 2022 1:13 AM |
I've loved everything he's done. Loved his sitcom and how it approached serious topics. I love his understated delivery, but he's an excellent example of how closeted some public figures can be and not a single person suspect anything. Yes, he gave off a nerdy, dweeby vibe, but did not ping in the slightest.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 2, 2022 3:48 AM |
The sitcom was one of the better shows on TV. It got canned after he clashed with NBC over an episode about a mass shooting which was supposed to air the same week a politician had gotten shot.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 2, 2022 3:50 AM |
Never heard of her. I'm intrigued.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 2, 2022 4:01 AM |
At 8:32 in the video at r25, he gets asked outright if he's gay and there's a split second hesitation LOL.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 2, 2022 4:11 AM |
Thanks for the clips. I thought “comedian” was “ Canadian”
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 2, 2022 4:46 AM |
Watching his HBO special
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 2, 2022 5:11 AM |
We first discussed him in 2019 when he was tiptoeing into Gayville.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 2, 2022 5:13 AM |
I remember his show on NBC. It was pretty good. Loretta Devine and David Alan Grier played his parents.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 2, 2022 5:40 AM |
I’m happy for him and wish him all the success in the world, but MAN, do I feel old and disconnected. He’s obviously famous enough for an HBO special, his own NBC sitcom and hosting SNL, but I have literally never heard of him. And I can’t use “I don’t have a tv” as an excuse. I have one. A brand new one. Just never turned it on and have only watched steaming shows on Netflix on my iPad for the last 3 years. And PBS.
I’m finally an old fuck.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 2, 2022 5:44 AM |
He's not cute and looks like 54. His coming out won't make the pandemic any less miserable.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 2, 2022 5:49 AM |
Contemplative and sometimes painful, his show is still raw and quite funny
by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 2, 2022 5:58 AM |
Daniel Sloss supposedly has a gigantic penis.
But he just used it to create a child with a woman.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 2, 2022 6:54 AM |
Has he revealed the boyfriend?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 2, 2022 1:20 PM |
[quote]Has he revealed the boyfriend?
Wouldn't it be a real hoot if the boyfriend turned out to be Will Smith?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 2, 2022 1:23 PM |
In his special, he talks about his Boyfriend
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 2, 2022 1:27 PM |
He clearly is in pain about family’s lack of acceptance about his sexuality. There are parts when you could feel the depth of his trauma, and it is heart wrenching
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 2, 2022 1:28 PM |
Add me to the list of eldergays (53) who loved The Carmichael Show. Excited for tonight's SNL.

A PR person's job is never done.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 2, 2022 1:42 PM |
I saw the last 15 minutes of his HBO special last night and it was very raw. He seemed to be really wrestling with his mother's lack of acceptance. I mean, I assume it was all written and rehearsed, but it really came across as authentic and spontaneous. It wasn't funny, though -- I assume the jokes came earlier in the show.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 2, 2022 1:49 PM |
Never heard of him but thank god he's cute at least
by Anonymous | reply 44 | April 2, 2022 1:54 PM |
In one episode of the Carmichael show Marla Gibbs played his grandmother who found out she had Alzheimer's and killed herself all in 22 minutes. He and his father helped her do herself in and there was no controversy about the episode because all the episodes from the Carmichael show seemed to be controversial. The lady who played his girlfriend is the daughter of Shadoe Stevens.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | April 2, 2022 2:00 PM |
I remember wanting to like his series because it was trying very hard to recapture the vibe of Norman Lear's 70s shows, but the writing just wasn't up to it. And the girlfriend was played by a mediocre actress.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 2, 2022 2:26 PM |
[quote] The lady who played his girlfriend is the daughter of Shadoe Stevens.
Shadoe?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 2, 2022 2:57 PM |
I never knew you spelled his 1st name that way
by Anonymous | reply 49 | April 2, 2022 3:45 PM |
R47 Yes, dumbass, his name is Shadoe Stevens
by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 2, 2022 3:50 PM |
OMG! I remember him as the announcer from Hollywood Squares
by Anonymous | reply 51 | April 2, 2022 4:04 PM |
Who?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 2, 2022 4:08 PM |
I liked Shadoe Steven’s daughter in the sitcoms with a Wayon brother or kid and Stephanie Weir from Madtv as her mom.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 2, 2022 4:15 PM |
Parts of the special are very funny, particularly about how his boyfriend and him struggle even in their relationship with gay identity and what it may mean for their perceived manhood. So much so, they talk to each as bros even during sex, “I wanna suck yo Dick, bro!”
by Anonymous | reply 54 | April 2, 2022 4:34 PM |
Not "queer?"
by Anonymous | reply 55 | April 2, 2022 4:37 PM |
Thank you for the tip OP. I just watched his comedy special. It was quite good. He's very likable, funny, and nice looking too!

by Anonymous | reply 57 | April 2, 2022 8:28 PM |
I watched the special today, too. It was quite moving. I related to a lot his issues. Good for him for coming out.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | April 3, 2022 12:13 AM |
He’s absolutely brilliant in this special. I was hanging on every word. It was theatric but authentic

It was directed by Bo Burnham. The lighting was beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | April 3, 2022 3:32 AM |
Jerrod Carmichael’s monologue! The audience adores him
by Anonymous | reply 63 | April 3, 2022 7:12 AM |
^ He's amazing. Sadly very few (openly) gay comedians are funny. I mean, Billy Eichner? Please!
by Anonymous | reply 64 | April 3, 2022 7:29 AM |
Good for him. Never heard of him.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | April 3, 2022 7:45 AM |
He's a smart guy, and a lot of his work tackles uncomfortable / touchy topics. I think he also is the co-creator of Ramy (on Hulu) which I like a lot - especially Hiam Abbass' performance.
In the SNL monologue he already looks more comfortable and flamboyant than in other projects i've seen him in. I feel like he's about to really come into his own.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | April 3, 2022 7:50 AM |
He’s cute and has a nice smile, and he’s a “gay man of color” that the gay community can be proud of, not a giant walking cross-dressing stereotype like Lil Nas X.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 3, 2022 7:56 AM |
I had no idea Amber Dawn Stevens West was Shadoe Stevens daughter, besides The Carmichael Show, she was also in Damon Wayans Jr's series Happy Together, not to be confused with Happy Endings, another series Damon was in.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 3, 2022 8:21 AM |
That monologue was great.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | April 3, 2022 8:33 AM |
A couple of posters upthread have referred to his TV show as "short-lived" when it was actually on for three seasons. Loved it, loved David Alan Grier as his dad.
The link is a cute clip of an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | April 3, 2022 8:51 AM |
i love that in his monologue, he talked about being the least famous person to ever host the show

I didn’t know this guy’s work either - amazing to me how it’s now possible to not notice a network TV show on the air for they’re years. I don’t think it’s an eldergay thing (tho I am one), I think it’s more that there’s not really a mass culture anymore.
Anyway, I watched his special last night and just loved it. Raw, honest, moving and funny. Loved the line about sucking a Dominican dude’s dick.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | April 3, 2022 2:10 PM |
Is it possible some of you just didn't know who he was because he's black? This site isn't the most diverse, and a lot of Jerrod's work addresses (and is marketed to) his own community, i've seen him on all black comedy lineups before and on more black podcasts and radio shows.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | April 3, 2022 2:23 PM |
I could have sworn he was out for a couple years already. Maybe he came out as bi back then. Or maybe he only said something about same sex experiences which I just interpreted to 'gay'. It must have been shortly after his sitcom ended.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | April 3, 2022 2:34 PM |
Good point, r74. But I do think that also speaks to my comment about the disappearance of a mass culture. A network sitcom that's on the air for three years used to represent what we would have considered traditional crossover success, i.e. transcending a niche demographic. There was a time in the '90s when I could have named just about every TV show on all four major networks! But with the prevalence of streaming and YouTube, *hardly anyone* faithfully keeps up with network TV anymore. The sheer glut of entertainment options has probably, somewhat counter-intuitively, made it more likely that someone like Jerrod could achieve what once would have been considered a big breakthrough, his own TV show, but remain known mostly within his own community.
Of course, coming out, in addition to being a brave personal act, is a shrewd career move. This guy just tapped into a big new audience!
by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 3, 2022 3:18 PM |
Didn’t know who he was yesterday but today I love him and I’m psyched for him!
by Anonymous | reply 77 | April 3, 2022 4:30 PM |
[quote] A couple of posters upthread have referred to his TV show as "short-lived" when it was actually on for three seasons.
True, but it only totals 32 episodes.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | April 3, 2022 5:33 PM |
R74 - he had two previous hour-long HBO specials, so it's not like he's been flying under the radar. (I would add I thought the current special is way better than the other two.)
On the other hand, maybe I (older white guy) knew if him because I'm a stand-up fan and I watch every comic who appears on their network.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | April 3, 2022 6:27 PM |
His previous HBO special was very good and unorthodox. He visited the housing projects in Winston-Salem where he grew up. Very personal and poignant
by Anonymous | reply 80 | April 4, 2022 12:30 PM |
“ Apart from being a very good stand-up, and the creator of an intriguing (if divisive) documentary series about his family, Carmichael is the sort of host who suggests that SNL is going for quality, Q rating be damned. And Carmichael’s monologue bore that out, as the comic forged an intimacy with the live audience like only the best stand-ups can. And, after watching Rothaniel earlier in the day, I’m comfortable in saying that Jarrod Carmichael is one of the best out there.”—Paste Magazine
by Anonymous | reply 81 | April 4, 2022 4:10 PM |
He was amazing on SNL. One of the best hosts in a very long time. Is his old sitcom streaming somewhere?
by Anonymous | reply 82 | April 4, 2022 4:47 PM |
I lived his sitcom. It seemed to be the only one attempting to be Norman Lear-like.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | April 4, 2022 4:56 PM |
His special is amazing, AMAZING. The vulnerability, the candor. It was very brave, remarkably touching and very funny in spots. Fantastic direction too.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | April 4, 2022 4:59 PM |
His stand up 8 in 2017 is all about dating girls and going with girls. Doesn't age well. But glad he's out now.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | April 4, 2022 4:59 PM |
Good for him. He's very cute and was great on SNL. I'm going to check out his special now.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | April 4, 2022 5:00 PM |
I'm so proud we (gay men) are getting this kind of representation now. I have nothing in common Billy Porter types.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | April 4, 2022 6:05 PM |
See, Bo. It’s not so hard 👀
by Anonymous | reply 88 | April 4, 2022 6:08 PM |
He got his teefs fixed. In one of his earlier specials he was bringing Sandra Bernhard realnness.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | April 4, 2022 6:45 PM |
WITH THAT FACE NO ONE KNEW?
RIIIIIIIIIIGHT!
by Anonymous | reply 90 | April 4, 2022 6:46 PM |
R87 Yes!!! I don’t want to be represented by flaming queens.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | April 4, 2022 7:20 PM |
[quote]WITH THAT FACE NO ONE KNEW?
I completely bought him as a straight man in his sitcom.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | April 4, 2022 8:42 PM |
I just glad he said gay and not queer. I only respect the ones that come out as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, none of that queer, questioning, pansexual, etc... crap.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | April 4, 2022 9:28 PM |
The special is pretty heavy. Liked it a lot.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | April 4, 2022 10:05 PM |
All those men dicking down and knocking up and so many woman. The mind kind of boggles.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | April 4, 2022 10:09 PM |
Flaming queens who couldn't hide it are the reason you self loathing "masc" fags are allowed to exist.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | April 4, 2022 10:10 PM |
Huh?
by Anonymous | reply 97 | April 5, 2022 3:21 AM |
Bump
by Anonymous | reply 99 | April 8, 2022 11:16 AM |
This guy has no social media at all. Looking forward to what he puts out next, but he doesn't make it easy to track.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | April 8, 2022 5:19 PM |
I just saw hi new comedy special . I like him a lot as a person but I didn’t find him very funny and got bored and stopped watching.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | April 8, 2022 5:57 PM |
You’re a minority r101
by Anonymous | reply 102 | April 8, 2022 6:08 PM |
Rothaniel is great. Why/how would anyone be bored with it?
by Anonymous | reply 103 | April 8, 2022 6:31 PM |
Howard Stern interviewed him a few days ago. JC made a funny statement regarding how closeted gay men will only date women who are 10's, but when/if they come out, their male dates can be 7's. You could hear his pain and frustration when he talked about his mother.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | April 30, 2022 11:47 PM |
Yeah his relationship with his mom really causes him great pain, but at least she still loves and interacts with him. I think it’s unrealistic and asking too much to ask his mother to change her religious beliefs about sexuality. She is never gonna change her Christian belief that it’s a sin for him to have sex with a man, yet she still looking to love and care for him as her son. Love does not require total agreement
by Anonymous | reply 105 | April 30, 2022 11:53 PM |
He must be in his forties, right?
by Anonymous | reply 106 | April 30, 2022 11:58 PM |
He just turned 35.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | May 1, 2022 2:14 AM |
Impressed by his work. Just finished watching ROTHANIEL. He managed to be quite funny and vulnerable too.
