Just curious. One thread about cults got me thinking.
Do You Know Anyone Who was in a Satanic Cult?
by Anonymous | reply 85 | October 12, 2022 2:47 PM |
The satanic church of Anton lavey?
Yeah, and it's a hotbed of w.supremacy and gov counterintelligence operatives from way back.
Other than that, it's just a lifestyle brand.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 1, 2022 6:43 PM |
Yes. They're called Republicans.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 1, 2022 6:44 PM |
R1 that or the sacrificing animals for the devil type of stuff. Just curious.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 1, 2022 6:45 PM |
Like Son of Sam stuff?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 1, 2022 6:54 PM |
@r2, Yep, I too know a lot of Republican Satanic Cultists
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 1, 2022 7:29 PM |
R3, the Lavey church can best be described as part grift, part circus smashed together with "so you want to be a sociopath? Well, we say there's nothing wrong with that!"
I wouldn't be surprised if they killed animals or did even worse things, but it's mostly all theatrics.
There's no religion, except perhaps Neitzscheanism, in that particular "religion". But that's just what I was exposed to. I never actually went there nor participated in anything, so who knows?

You should ask Kenneth Anger, if he's still around.
I'd heard he was a good friend and regular visitor of ol'Anton when he was alive.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 1, 2022 9:10 PM |
A guy once changed a tire for me who claimed to be. He just seemed garden variety loony to me but the friend I had with me was well and truly spooked..
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 1, 2022 9:12 PM |
You know, if you don't believe any of this nonsense it's not very scary
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 1, 2022 9:17 PM |
You should think of most of this like a magician's tricks. It's meant to work on your head and psych you out.
Kind of like those people who look for "signs". Naturally, they find them... everywhere.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 1, 2022 9:19 PM |
Satanic cults aren't what they used to be. It's all infighting between team Molest Kids and team No, Trans Them Instead these days. Ugh.

Ugh R16. Why did you do that?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | April 2, 2022 1:55 AM |

It was mainly about hedonism (drugs and parading around naked). I think he did it for the shock value. He really was a lot like that character on Silicon Valley. He had a bunch of nerd friends who did it with him.

by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 2, 2022 2:47 AM |
Bad taste can lead to the best stories, R16. Of course, it can lead to tedious repetition of recommendations that you seek psychiatric help but those are easily enough ignored. Youâll do fine. And if we ever see each other at a party, you just sit right down by me.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | April 2, 2022 9:52 AM |
R19 You keep dangling extra layers of batshittery and acting like that guy is typical and we're all gonna know what you're talking about lol. Tech nerds are Satanists? That's a thing?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 2, 2022 9:59 AM |
Yes, an acquaintance of many years is an avowed Satanist of the Anton LaVey variety. Nice guy generally, but it's impossible for an outsider to know exactly what they're up to or how cult-like it actually is. Having read LaVey's Satanic Bible, I'm aware there's an element of retribution for any perceived slights making close contact with such an individual risky in my book.

Gloria Vanderbilt was supposedly a Satanist. I think there's a difference between the high class Sammy Davis Jr. kind and the white trash kind.
I don't think Gloria Vanderbilt was smoking meth and using spell books she got off the metaphysics shelf at Books A Million.

The Satanic Panic was mostly a psyop, fomented by various elements of gov. Intelligence.
Cops were briefed, fake experts minted for court appearances through mail order diploma millse, and various kinds of violent crime and graffiti and general hooliganism were held up as evidence.
Other than a few groups of idiotic teenaged delinquents murdering people and claiming that they were inspired by Satan, it was an example of creating what you intend to find. A virtual non-existent thing with lots of media hype to keep the public up in arms and searching for witches under their beds.
It was a distractionary device from all of the really bad shit the government and economy was engaging in then. And quite effective, since idiots are still talking about it now instead of Iran contra and the crushing of the unions.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 2, 2022 12:31 PM |
What is a psyop anyway?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 3, 2022 10:08 AM |
It probably wasn't a government psyop, R31. If the last few years have shown anything it's not just how willing but how utterly enthused most people are about believing batshit insane conspiracy theories that come from random social media accounts and specifically not from the government.
Linking you, R32.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 3, 2022 6:13 PM |
There's different brands of Satanism. LaVey's was just an elitist sex club. While the Satanic Temple, founded by Lucien Greaves, are a group of atheist, leftist agent provocateurs.

In the early 80's I met a few of the founders of he Church of Satan in San Francisco through my Russian teacher. They came to her Russian Easter party (post 2AM, after the liturgy). They were very boring and not scary at all. I was surprised when they were introduced to me - they were the famous Satanists you read about.

Roller PIg Madison Cawthorn. That's where he got the cocaine orgy stories from.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 4, 2022 3:04 AM |
Police all over the country came up with "satanic" crimes all around the same time frame. It was also prominent on the talk shows. This doesn't happen spontaneously.
Also, at least one documentary interviewed a policeman who said he had been briefed in seminars for what signs to look for, and of course he found some.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 4, 2022 3:15 PM |
Also judges were admitting evidence of "satanism" from "expert" witnesses who had gotten their fake doctorates through mail order diploma mills.
This was not a bottom up phenomenon, even if the American public is stupid, superstitious and religiously based enough to already be primed to see the hand of the Dark One everywhere.

by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 4, 2022 3:27 PM |
R43 I find the idea that Satanists were being targeted by a shadowy conspiracy very amusing.
Isn't that what they're supposed to be doing? What are all of the Eyes Wide Shut sex parties supposed to be for, then? Embarrassing for the Dark Lord if Reagan or H.W. Bush were outdoing him so easily.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | April 4, 2022 4:20 PM |
No, but I know a few Wiccans. Nice people.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | April 4, 2022 4:25 PM |
Satanists were only targeted if you mean pure invention by officials at various government levels to find "satanism" everywhere they looked.
Actual satanists are mostly a social club for hedonists as described above.

It does, though. This is basically what going viral was for the pre-internet age. I'm not saying government psyops don't/can't exist, but you definitely need more than 'a bunch of people started to believe it around the same time' to prove it.
Unfortunately, human being are as susceptible to moral panics as we ever were, no outside/official interference necessary.

Files regarding the McMartin preschool were included in the FBI's dump of its case files related to their investigation of a cult called The Finders.
The CIA and the State Department were supposedly providing aid to the Finders and profiting from child sex trafficking that the group organized.
The investigation into The Finders didn't begin until 1987, though. It's not clear why the McMartin preschool would have been included.

Satanists freak me out. I talked to a guy once online who claimed to be one. Said he had a tattoo of Baphomet and that it "drew" the other satanists in. That was enough for me. I believe in Christ. I honestly got a really bad feeling talking to him, like he was confusing me, it was very unsettling. I think they're all delusional.

Remember the drama over backwards masking iin records? Not so much a thing these days since everything is digital but I remember it even going to congress that there were satanic messages in some records if you played them backwards at odd speeds and really stretched to hear it.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | April 5, 2022 1:20 PM |
R61 Probably something people picked up from The Exorcist and bought into. The modern version would be videogame Easter eggs and hidden endings.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | April 5, 2022 1:25 PM |
If you believe I'm delusional for believing in Christ, that's on you. Arguing about religion is a pointless race to the bottom. It's called respect.

The entire evangelical/fundamentalist movement is a cult and anyone attached in a cult member.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | April 5, 2022 1:51 PM |
R63, Agreed. Many Christ believers spend time feeding the homeless, visiting and caring for the sick and elderly, raising money for various charities, etc as requested by their church pastors. NO, I'm not saying 100% of all who claim to be Christian do a ton of good unfortunately.
However what exactly have Satanic Cult members done to help humanity? Do any at least support anything cultural like art museums or the ballet or opera?
by Anonymous | reply 65 | April 5, 2022 2:36 PM |
R61 Word. Much more panic about music than movies. I remember the scuttlebutt that Stevie Nicks having a black cat "familiar," and singing " Rhiannon" was tantamount to summoning a succubus. Also, some friends full-on played whatever that famous Led Zep record was backwards at a get together. As clear as day you could hear someone (Robert Plant in helium?) say, "I sing because I live with Satan.". Rockers played into that witchcraft mythology so much. Just like hip hoppers and illuminati imagery.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | April 5, 2022 2:37 PM |
R66, Always wondered how much of music connected to "Satanism" was hyped on both sides of the aisle. After all rock was always about rebellion to authority.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 5, 2022 2:47 PM |

Mass formation psychosis is real.

No, a friend of mine grew up in a doomsday cult though. I've also casually known a couple of people in Scientology because I grew up in Florida.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | April 5, 2022 3:09 PM |
Satanists have never existed. Their image is just invoked for hysteria, usually by people with overactive imaginations or agendas of some kind.
Even in the Middle Ages the Church didn't believe Satanists actually existed. The enemy were pagans and heretics, not mythical devil worshippers.

I knew a guy who was a member of a Satanic coven. Yes, it was an excuse for drugs and gay sex, but it was also. part Fight Club, part frat, and a whole lot of misogyny. Satan seemed to be worshiped as the eternal masculine. Jesus was far too feminine. Basically, one had to have sex with anyone else in the coven. The rituals seemed to involve penetration by ritual objects. Severe hazing of new members or anyone seen a breaking the rules or being too soft. A would say it was the definition of a cult, except that it did not have a head leader. There was a group of elders, but even they seemed to be merely the keepers of information (parliamentarians, essentially.).

by Anonymous | reply 74 | April 5, 2022 3:47 PM |
That's not uncommon nowadays R72. Fight churches are a thing and they're nominally Christian. It's based off a stupid belief that Christianity is too feminized because of figures like Mary and a focus on forgiveness and compassion.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | April 5, 2022 3:48 PM |
R75, interesting, but this was the 1980s. I don't think fight churches existed then... or did they?

The Satanist bent you're talking about was probably as a rebellious streak against the height of the Satanic Panic.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | April 5, 2022 3:58 PM |
R78, that I can answer as "no". They had been around for a long time.
Part of it was by incorporating gay sex into their religion, they had a work-around for gay sex being illegal. The considered it the same as native Americans using peyote.
Part was a genuine hatred of women. Many of the men had been brought up in all female households or had bad experiences with women in early childhood. They had a really weird interpretation of the Adam and Eve story. In particular the part where Satan, in the form of a snake temps Eve. Unfortunately, I don't remember the details. Of course Satan was the daddy figure of all daddy figures.
Part was the public perception of gays at the time. They hated the swishy queens stereotype. Nobody was allowed to join who was fey of had gay-voice. Gays in film tended to be the swishy queen, as in Dog Day Afternoon. Dave Kopay was out, but not many role models in sports.

What is the difference between the Catholic Church and a Satanic Cult? No, this isn't a joke. I mean, I was raised Catholic. I even went through Confirmation. I never graduated to the next step of being molested by a priest, but heigh-ho. In case you didn't know the Pope is the world's biggest rock star.
Otherwise, what's the difference? I've never attendede a Satanic mass. Do they pass a collection plate around? I'm serious. The big deal in the Catholic Mass is eating the body of Christ. Can you imagine trying to explain this to somebody who has never heard about it?
Anyway, I just thought I'd throw this out. I have no regrets about being raised Catholic. You can take what you find helpful and leave the rest of it. I can't say I don't have trauma as a result of my year in Catholic School, but I don't have long standing resentment. The kids who tormented me are lucky I'm not a serial killer because I'd return to where I was raised and kill them. But that's so dodgy now with CCTV and receipts for everything.
I can recite The Act of Contrition in under ten seconds. Try THAT one sometime!

In college I took a sociology class with a professor who is considered an "expert" on cults, and he claimed that religious cults are pretty rare. He said that the ones that claim to be about self-improvement ala Scientology are much more common.
