What Destroyed The Old School Hollywood Celebrity?

Everyone looks like some dull trashy Instagram nobody. Was it the 2000s with the rise of reality television? Suddenly trash become glamorous and famous. People would become Hollywood royalty for eating cockroaches on television. Actors all look like children who got into mommy’s closet and are pretending to dress as adults. They have the bodies of prepubescent children. It’s just revolting. I still can’t get over the likes of Tom Holland and that other rat being taken seriously when they look like they can’t even grow pubes yet.

Reality television and SM. The YouTube influencers.

by Anonymousreply 1March 28, 2022 11:59 PM

No, you just got old.

by Anonymousreply 2March 29, 2022 12:00 AM

No, people have become trashy. No manners, no class, dress and act like idiots.

by Anonymousreply 3March 29, 2022 12:02 AM

R2 Exactly. It’s evolution.

by Anonymousreply 4March 29, 2022 12:06 AM

What destroyed it is that the rest of us live hand to mouth and really don't want that glamour shit that "celebrities" are making off our backs rubbed in our faces.

As a society, we can't afford dignity nor manners anymore. Those are generally properties of a safe, secure society with a broad middle class.

Crabs in a bucket mentality.

Social Media killed it, there was no more mystery. The cunty Kardashians ruined society, social media ruined movie stars.

by Anonymousreply 6March 29, 2022 12:14 AM

Do you think social media ruined movie stars or movie stars ruined movie stars?

The George Clooney era was insufferable. That early 2000’s era, the Oprah era, where movie stars were treated like savior Gods. They were political, they were “charitable” and they were snooty.

And they weren’t making the movies to back it up. Here was Brad Pitt and his face was in the tabloids every single day and there was SO much coverage on “Troy” and then it bombed.

Same thing with J. Lo and Ben Affleck and the “Gigli” era.

When Tom Cruise jumped the couch, that’s really when that collapse began.

People became interested in Paris Hilton and the anorexic party girl era and reality TV. It was just more interesting.

It was when Hollywood became too urbanized with focus on rappers and the ghetto. Hence why the latest Oscars (run by a black producer) was basically a street-walker convention.

by Anonymousreply 8March 29, 2022 12:24 AM

I'd pinpoint Tom Cruise's couch jumping and the Oprah era as the beginning of the death knell we've come to see now. Post internet era, post camera phones, too much information all at once in a very unstable society.

Right, at 30 years old I’m just too old. lol.

I was looking at some of the Life Magazine pictures of New York from the 50's - 90's and they had compared them to the same type photos of today. It was striking, the difference. People use to take pride in their appearance and wardrobes. Cities were clean as well. Well mannered people behaving with care and dignity. It was very depressing. I wanted to go back in time. I still do.

Look what Anna Wintour did to the super model. And we only had super models because Hollywood stopped embracing glamour in the 70s. It’s just gotten progressively worse, with the 2000s doing the most damage. We went from actual singer-singer writers in the 90s to Lolitas like Britney Spears coming off an assembly line to cater to pedophiles and treating said Lolitas as artistic geniuses.

R11, 70s and 80s NYC looked war torn with crime off the charts. Let’s not get carried away.

by Anonymousreply 13March 29, 2022 12:42 AM

R13 Right, but there was amazing creativity and innovation in the arts - film, music, visual work - going on there. Now we have Disneyified corporate NYC that's a playground for trust fund kids.

[quote] The cunty Kardashians ruined society, social media ruined movie stars.

The Gabors were a bit like the Kardashians, famous for being famous, except they weren’t treated like the pinnacle of celebrity. People saw them as a joke, a novelty. The Kardashians are treated like Elizabeth Taylor, that this is the peak of glamour and ingenuity.

by Anonymousreply 15March 29, 2022 12:44 AM

Talent doesn't matter now. In anything. It's who you know and rich you already are. Nepotism. It has ruined celebrity because we not choose them, they are shoved down our throats.

by Anonymousreply 16March 29, 2022 12:45 AM

Do not choose. Typo. My MS is angry at me for typing about the Oscars all day lol. 😝

by Anonymousreply 17March 29, 2022 12:46 AM

We live in a world where everything is designed to ultimately become disposable garbage so why wouldn’t our tastes in music and film follow suit?

by Anonymousreply 18March 29, 2022 12:50 AM

R8 When did that happen?

I think to add to my R7 point, it goes right in line with “The Seduction of Kansas”.

When glamorous Hollywood spoke out against George W. Bush and the Iraq war and became more political, their star value dropped.

Look at Madonna.

I remember when the movie “Sideways” was huge and was nominated for all sorts of Oscars.

Chris Rock did an opening skit where he interviewed white and black people on “Sideways” and asked them what the best movie of the year was.

White people loved and adored and praised “Sideways” while black people said they loved “White Chicks”.

That was definitely the death of the Oscars in my opinion because in the long run, “White Chicks” became a cult classic and “Sideways” has been long forgotten about, even the actors are pretty much gone.

It kind of showed the disconnect from Hollywood and what was actually cool. I know the Oscars has been snooty but looking back at nominations, they weren’t that snooty in the 80’s and 90’s. It wasn’t until the last 20 years they really broke away from pop culture.

And slowly Hollywood did the same with pop culture. I mean the movie star is pretty much dead too.

Me personally, I like social media influencers! I’m way more interested in Mike Chabot’s and Nathan Webb doing fitness on Instagram than I am any Hollywood celebrity!

Why do old people think Gen Z and millennials care about Hollywood when guys like this are on their phones!? I can’t even pay attention to movies anymore on TikTok and IG all day lol.
