I saw this on Twitter the other day.
From what I saw during a quick scroll thru the Twitter thread [bold]Fred Sanford[/bold] and [bold]Archie Bunker[/bold] were mentioned the most followed by [bold]Thomas Magnum[/bold] and [bold]Barney Fife[/bold].
[bold]Oscar Madison[/bold] and [bold]Ralph Kramden[/bold] were also popular with at least 5 mentions as were [bold]Hawkeye Pierce[/bold] and [bold]Columbo[/bold] but people also agreed with the OP about [bold]Jim Rockford[/bold].
[bold]Omar Little[/bold] from The Wire, [bold]Al Swearengen[/bold] from Deadwood and [bold]Tyrion Lannister[/bold] from Game of Thrones are the most recent characters with multiple mentions (at least 5) but the bulk of the characters named are from shows that aired between the 1950s - 1990s.
Other favorites with multiple mentions: Mr. Spock, Andy Sipowicz, Denny Crane, Crockett & Tubbs, Jim Ignatowski, Matt Dillon (Gunsmoke), Spenser for Hire, Tony Soprano, Jaime Sommers, Alex Keaton, Carl Kolchak, Peter Griffin, Jean Luc Picard, George Jefferson, Number 6, George Costanza, Steve McGarrett, Al Bundy, J.R. Ewing, Lou Grant, Coach Ken Reeves, Maxwell Smart, Kramer, Captain Kirk, Pappy Boyington (Black Sheep Squadron), Jack Bauer, Homer Simpson and the Fonz.
Shows with the most characters mentioned were the A-Team, WKRP, Hogans Heroes, Charlie’s Angels, Barney Miller, Seinfeld and MTM.
This Twitter account appeals to sports fans of a certain age which explains the type of characters named (side note: Rose Nylund and Sophia Petrillo were both mentioned) but it's interesting that most of the favorites are from older shows. Have there been any greats in recent years?
