"Don't Call It Frisco"
I've seen some commentary lately on this topic, and I'm terribly sorry to tear you folks away from the ongoing "insightful" commentary about violence from black men in tuxes, but...
I've been living in San Francisco for over 20 years, and have heard many people call the City many things, including Frisco, locals included.
Most natives I've met don't care what you call it, but many people love to admonish people on the internet for calling San Francisco "Frisco".
The attached link really spells out why "Frisco" is actually just fine to use, and it carries some interesting history of the word's usage.

As bad as Frisco is, it’s not as bad as San Fran.
I usually call it by the full name, or SF, or The City.
I live in San Jose & have seen several news segments, fluff pieces, about this very topic.

Frisco is what we backwards neanderthals from across the bridge called it, and also those snoots that lived the other side of Caldecott.
Why do people admonish others at all for their regional, class colloquialisms? The only correction anyone should carry out (carefully) is if the person is not making any sense at all.

And you probably didn’t know it was referred to as “the City” until you moved there.

As a local, I don’t know anyone who lives here that refers to it as frisco.

The only people in SF who call it “Frisco” are Hell’s Angels. Not a group any sane person would want to emulate.

I had always been told that the proper pronunciation was to lisp the s in the Spanish style, so "Frithco"

Four decades ago I was visiting in-laws in San Jose. We went to lunch at a Marie Calendar’s in town. Now, the MC’s where I was from in Southern California had a "Frisco Burger" on their menus but in the Bay Area this Marie Callendar’s menu called it a "San Francisco Burger."
Also, FYI, San Bernardino in So. Cal. Isn’t so fond of their moniker "Berdoo."

R8, if you’re going to post ridiculous bullshit, you should at least *try* to get your facts right.
In Castilian Spanish, only the letters “c” (before i and e) and “z” are pronounced with a lisp. So a Spaniard would say “San Franthisco,” but literally no one without a congenital speech impediment would ever say “Frithco.”
You imbethile.

R7, totally wrong.
R6, your experience as a local is valid of course, but I know tons of natives and locals who call it this. Sometimes it's said 'post-ironically', if you know what I mean.

Native Sacramentan here. The only person I regularly heard refer to it as Frisco was my late uncle who was born in 1906 and settled in Sacto (yes, we use Sacto, mainly in written form) right after WWII. Maybe it's generational? It sounded weird and old fashioned in the late '70s and early '80s. In college at UC Davis, some students would joke "don't forget your Crisco for Frisco" when a trip to SF was planned.

The only thing worse that referring to San Francisco as "Frisco" is referring to California as... (shudder)... "Cali". It's like referring to New York as "Yorkie".

People who refer to San Francisco as "The City," make me want to emphasize calling it "Frisco."

Born and raised, I’m 76, my folks always called it ‘frisco. We have bigger things to worry about here than the nickname.
Also called the State Capital Sack-ra-Tomato.

I've lived in various cities of the Bay Area for over 30 years. Me, my relatives, and friends have always called it "The City". We assumed anyone who called it "Frisco" grew up somewhere else.

Hot, muscular winery employees and I call it The City when we go gay bar hoppin' there on weekends. I'm now a hot AF daddy.

Further reinforcing our contention on this thread that Frisco was popular around Post-WWII when you were conceived when vets like my uncle were using the GI Bill in N Cal. The usage died off, Gramps.

I grew up in the 'burbs (Walnut Creek, which some are trying to make "The Creek" happen. Gross.) in the 60's and always called it "The City". Have lived in The City for the past 45 years but would never use that term outside of the (San Francisco) Bay Area. My Eldergay friends who retired elsewhere call it San Francissy. "Frisco" no longer makes my blood pressure soar, but "San Fran" does. "Ess Eff" is OK, but I'd never use it outside of Cali. Hearing "Cali" just makes me giggle for no apparent reason. I've noticed that Angelinos prefer to say "Los Angeles" over LA. I've never felt that "city" was dignified enough to use its full name, and note that "LA" is the entire area between San Jose and the Mexican border, except for the Central Coast, which is part of Northern California.

It sounds vulgar and low-rent. Kind of like the people who would use it.
