Kai has been pushed forward as the new trans kid because he is better looking as a girl than Jazz Jennings (at least for the moment).

When I was a wee gayling, I would play with my grandmother's lipstick, use her Chanel No. 5.. It wasn't because I wanted to be a woman — I was just a curious boy who found it fascinating how someone could transform. My grandfather's tartar-patterned scarfs also became the victim of my dress-up phase, by the way. Back to granny's make-up: I grew out of that fascination real quick, onto the next shiny thing.

I shudder to think how some families would interpret the aforementioned today, with young boys being "transed" as a consequence. Horrible.

I've watched my fair share of interviews with Rupaul's drag race contestants, and so many said that when they were little boys they thought they wanted to be girls because they liked 'girl things.' Then they went through puberty and realized that they were gay. These poor 'transkids' aren't even given a chance to go through puberty to figure out what they like.

Why is being trans more acceptable than being gay?

My being gay affects nobody but me and, to a lesser extent, those close to me. I don't need surgeries to "affirm" myself, I don't care about what bathrooms I can use, etc. So, it seems to me, gays should be more accepted.

That poor kid is going to have so many issues in a few years thanks to their parents. I foresee a lot of similar stories over the next ten years of kids raised as trans coming out and stating they were abused and forced into the situation, what makes me even sadder is that the initial victims who come out against their trans status will be demonized because it goes against the narrative.

It offers them a solution to male homosexuality by turning their boys into eunuchs before they hit 18. These moms can avoid being labelled homophobes and at the same time receive praise because they are not transphobes.

R13, some parents still think that it is their fault if they have a gay child. They did something wrong, and when their child comes out everyone will know it. If a child is transgender, though, it’s nature’s screw-up.

And the only reason that these details are leaking out about Kai's mom is because she isn't as educated and polished as Jeanette Jennings.

Jeanette Jennings was a filmmaker in Hollywood and she had a cousin who was a LGBT counselor. Jeannette knew exactly what to say and what to keep out of the limelight.

Jennings is from an upper middle class Jewish family, that’s true. Jeannette knew how to play the game.

Except Jazz gained 100+ pounds and isn't the perfect girly girl/eunuch anymore.

Jazz had a male friend on the show who also went trans and had his penis mutilated. Despite Jazz and this guy knowing each other for a few years, it wasn't until after they both had their penises mutilated that Jazz's mother suddenly proclaimed that they would make a good couple. it is absolutely crazy that the ACLU is supportive of this story. The mother literally talks about physically abusing their child because they were gender nonconforming. And they are pushing it as a success story. I think the subject of kids transitioning is much more complex and nuanced than anything you will read on this website but this is not a story that should be celebrated.

R42, “trans” is a group defined by having surgery; it’s hard to separate the rights of surgery(full consent, full understanding of options with unbiased studies and neutral language) with rights of gender (which LGBT would always support. Gender roles aren’t the issue. And even allowing for changes in dysphoria definitions over time, data shows that 67 percent of “trans kids” are gay/lesbian/bi if allowed to develop as themselves without early in life social and hormonal intervention.

I'm pretty neutral on this subject. But, I was wondering, do you think there really are trans people? People born in the wrong body as they say. They way a lot of the conversations are on here you'd think there's no such thing. So my point is, if there're really is such a thing, aren't we really being cruel to the ones that truly are "trans". Thanks!

R52, in a metaphysical or religious belief system I could imagine someone believing a person could be born in the wrong body. But in a scientific system it doesn’t make sense. Your brain and your body are part of the same system. So to the same extent your brain is feminized because of unusual hormones, your body is also feminized, naturally. Your brain could be more feminine than the average guy’s, but it isn’t a brain that doesn’t match your body.

So, a guy born with mild androgen insensitivity might never be diagnosed as having a DSD - unless he goes to a clinic because of having difficulty fathering children it wouldn’t be diagnosed. But he would have less body hair, and be more likely to develop some breast tissue, and generally have physical effects of having low access to testosterone - because if you had that condition, no matter how much testosterone your body actually makes, there would be a limit to what you could use.

So a person with that condition would probably grow up as a femme man, provided he were in a supportive culture where he was encouraged to accept his body.

If he took estrogen in childhood his development would be affected by taking the estrogen. He would never develop completely into the self he was born as.

But if he were socialized from the age of 3 to be called a daughter and have a female name and have all of society expect him to have surgery at puberty, it might be a different story.

And if he grew to adulthood in a harsh culture that couldn’t accept differences in masculinity, he might transition as an adult.

Brain androgyny is actually correlated to better mental health- so trying to change a person who is not naturally very masculine or naturally very feminine to be all one thing is not necessarily a great mental health objective.

This kid was interviewed by his mother a few years ago for Teen Vogue and there was a bizarre moment at the end where his mother hugs him and he has a look of incredible coldness and disgust. He then starts rubbing his backside knowing the camera is there, and his mother says "you're wearing panties... you're showing everyone your heinie", almost like he had been trained to do this, to emphasise his supposed 'femaleness'. It was incredibly disturbing and happens right at the end of the video.

The study on brain androgyny also shows the complexity of being born in a male or female body versus gender - half of all people- 50 percent of all people- have androgynous brains. So the range of what your brain can be as a man or as a woman is very wide and has a lot of overlap. There’s enough androgyny that “non-binary” doesn’t have much real meaning as a category, unless it’s used to describe a person taking hormones.

The real question here is not so much who should be included in what space, but why hormones and other medical intervention are weighed as having no consequences towards health or public cost. If there are multiple roads to happiness and some of them involve medical intervention and some of them don’t, arguably the 100 percent affirmation model would lead to more people getting surgery. Even intersex advocates know the risks of surgery can sometimes outweigh the risk of not blending in socially- and the risk of not blending in socially changes as society changes. Femme now vs. femme in 1950. Boy who says “I’m a girl” because his mom spanks him and says, “that’s what girls do,” and that he can’t do it because he’s a boy.

I think trans - real trans where it’s not a mental conflation of yourself and the sex you’re attracted to- is really likely to be an undiagnosed DSD and/or social homophobia. The same issues would arise as with intersex people only for intersex, sometimes they have to have parts removed because of cancer risk. Trans would have healthy body parts removed.
