What an insanely narcissistic, American-centric trivializing of an actual horrifying, catastrophic war. With the possibility of nuclear devastation for Europe.
This might actually be the end of celebrity as we've known it. This is too self important and disconnected from reality. The Oscars are bullshit.
They really don't understand who they work for (the audience) and what their role in society (clowns) is, do they?

Indeed. The World Cup or the opening ceremony of the Olympics has a worldwide audience. The Oscars do not. Frankly, it would make Zelensky look silly to speak at the Oscars, but if he determines it's in the interest of Ukraine, more power to him.

Zelenskyy is a fellow actor! Hollywood should be able to accommodate whatever time he wishes to take on Hollywood's biggest night:
"Mister President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, please take the podium. The floor is yours."
This is why you never allow New Yorkers to lead The Academy. What the fuck do they know about Hollywood and the film industry? Think of the ratings! Think of the history making speech! Oust David Rubin for his insolence.

If he finds Hollywood and his place in it so repellent, ridiculous and superficial, then why doesn’t he just quit then? All this white male 80s & Eastwood movie savior bullshit he does in these places is because he’s not ok with himself. He’s so predictably egomaniacal and too self-centered to see that his need for validation and overcompensation is because he’s the one who’s deemed his life’s work trivial and unmanly (yes, it’s absolutely about his definition of masculinity). How insulting for these up their own ass Hollywood dweebs to think that Zelensky should take time out of his day to use the Oscar Awards show as his platform as though he doesn’t have the ability to command attention through the real world press. Also, the ratings are shit because nobody cares.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 27, 2022 4:14 AM |
r3, I agree. Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not understanding the opposition. Such an in your face reminder of what's happening outside the US would be a good reality check for the celebrity attendees, the three people watching the event at home, and reporters on the red carpet who are focused on insignificant things.
r13, is there an article where Penn said the Oscars is an event with a "worldwide audience"? Zelensky wants the US to be more involved in and provide more support to Ukraine that what we're already providing, that's not going to happen unless American citizens demand it from our government. Our population gives a lot of focus to what's produced by the entertainment industry and promoted by the media. It's not unreasonable for Penn/Zelensky to use this opportunity to get more attention on the issue, using people who have money and care about appearing conscious and compassionate. And before someone starts: Yes, Oscar viewership is shit, but that doesn't mean the individuals attending don't have a large social media platform that they're opening to using to galvanize support for Ukraine.

I don't know what Zalensky could possibly say to the Oscar's audience that they don't already know and believe.
BTW, R30, The US isn't committing more of anything than what they said just because the American people said so. Intelligence has known about this invasion forever and it's probably unfolding better than expected for the US. Why would the US invest more when Russia has been isolated by the world and China has been put in check by watching the unraveling of the Russian economy? We didn't have to put any boots on the ground for the world to stand up against Russia. We've wanted these kind of sanctions for years to bring Russia to its knees. And the invasion of Ukraine, the optics of "white europeans being killed with hints of pervious WWs," was just enough to do it. And the US didn't have to lift a finger.
I think they are pleasantly surprised by how incapable Russia has been in taking a country like Ukrain. I think the US was ready and willing to give up that country for these sanctions. But now it looks like we won't have to. It's the Rise of the European Union as a Super Power and the handicapping of Russia and the humbling of China with the end of globalization as we know it.

Hey shit for brains R56 and R58
It's not Sean Penn's "first rodeo". He received over $10 million in grants to provide housing in Haiti. Over $8 million was from the U.S government. And if you had the brains to actually do a simple Google search instead of running that big fat mouth of yours, you'd know this.
And he was one of the first organizations who set up vaccination sites in California. He runs a good charity. You may not like it or be willing to accept it, but it's a fact.

by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 27, 2022 5:37 PM |
And for all of you wrapped up in the Ukraine drama who can't see the forest for the trees - just be happy that the US Govt didn't have to resort to the old tried and true playbook of killing its own citizens, (Pearl Harbor, Gulf of Tonkin, World Trade Towers), to get the country's support behind a huge global push for dominance.
Penn's crocodile tears will amount to nothing as would a trivial appearance by Zalensky at the Oscars. Things are already going swimmingly for the US - the Lisa Vanderpump of countries "getting others to do your dirty work" while your hands remain clean to point fingers.
