It's ridiculous and silly humor and that is why I started watching it, also because I love Taika Waititi.
Then it kept getting gayer and gayer, never occurred to me that maybe a lot of those guys who chose to go to sea did so because they love dick.

It never occurred to you? You just ignored the gay sailor stereotype all your life?
Black Sails was also quite gay, but no comedy. Loved that one! Thanks for the recommendation. Gay pirates is the best genre.

This show is the worst. Rhys Darby is an unfunny cunt. Taika is just tiresome.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 26, 2022 10:39 PM |
r2 has never seen the show.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 26, 2022 10:54 PM |
Yes r1 I did, too many other gay stereotypes to keep track of.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 26, 2022 10:55 PM |
R3 No, I started the first, thirsty episode. Not my tempo.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 26, 2022 10:56 PM |
It wasn't mine either but it did make me laugh a bit, so I kept watching and was rewarded because as it went along I got used to the humor and began to laugh more with each episode. Then the romance revealed itself and it was a good pay off for staying tuned.

I love Taika Waititi too, I'm a little obsessed with him.
He seems gay to me.

Ian and Mickey’s relationship were secondary with 2 min of screentime on the shameless show but it became main in s10 and s11.

Such a strange show -- I only got past the first two episodes because a friend told me to. The story doesn't really start until episode three.
However, OP's headline is a SPOILER! The fact that this is a gay story is a total surprise, except not any more to anyone who reads Datalounge.

Not true, Taika talked about the show as a rom-com but people assumed he meant in the bromance way not in the actual gay way.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 26, 2022 11:50 PM |
r7 I'm suspecting Taika might be gay too.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 26, 2022 11:51 PM |
It's amusing.

The New Zealanders specialise in the humour of Understatement and Self-Deprecation.
It's the total opposite of the Loud, Sassy, African-American, Overstated style.

Taika Waititi (Taika David Cohen) (added just because I think it's a fun fact) was or maybe still is married and was caught in some cheating scandal last year.
Based on this thread, I gave this show a try and had to stop about five minutes in. The dialogue was kind of funny, but the slapstick was boring, and I've just about had it with historical films that use modern language and sensibility. It looks like it could be cute, but it's not for me.

Give it another couple of episodes, it took me until about #4. I kept watching because there were at least a couple a good laughs each episode which I need right now and I liked the quirks. The blend between contemporary and historical is weird but I settled into it.

We don't like New Zealand comedy.
WE prefer our own comedians like Trevor Noah, John Oliver and Bill Maher.

It’s slash fic. There really were gay pirates, but not Stede Bonnet and Edward Teach aka Blackbeard.
The real Blackbeard was a notorious rapist whose specialty was conning young girls into marrying him, then on the wedding night having his crew run a train on her while he watched. He wasn’t in love with Stede Bonnet—he saw he was a rich idiot and robbed him blind.

Are you talking about a 19th-century steam-train?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 27, 2022 9:39 PM |
Yeah, r18, they took a Tardis to the next century. It’s in Episode 5.

Rhys is hilarious - loved him in Conchords.
And who needs Jussie when we’ve got Joel from Thrones?

I finally got to see it. It takes a long time to warm up and refrigerator moments abound but it has a certain charm and Taika Waititi wears a leather catsuit well. This will have a major impact on his career going forward.

Spoiler:
I last saw the fancy party episode where they pretended to be accountants. It’s cool that they’re making main characters gay. There’s already like 2-3 gay secondary characters.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 9, 2022 6:01 PM |
Are those 2-3 gay secondary characters objects of ridicule?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 9, 2022 9:54 PM |
I can't believe that Taika Waititi, David Jenkins and Rhys Darby have singlehandedly destroyed queerbaiting.

R24, no.

I just binged all 10 episodes. Silly show, but easy to watch. Taika Watiti looked great with the long hair and leather outfit. Damn.
Rory Kinnear reminded me of a chubby Homelander from The Boys. He has the same mouth and similar looking face. The way he said “Eye” when looking through the telescope in episode 1 or 2 was hilarious.
And Will Arnett rocked his long hair. Mustache was okay, but the hair was working for him. This was 5e most attractive I’ve ever found him. Fred Armisen looked like Tom Hanks. It was distracting.
RIP Karl.

I can't get past the disgusting beards and everyone looking unclean. The extremely tryhard humor is just the cherry on top.
Just because something is gay doesn't mean it's for me, I guess.

Anyone watching season 2?
They had Izzy shirtless in episode five. He looks good! I like a nice, hairy, fifty + year old chest. Yum.

Love this show! It's turned out to be very interesting.
