Matthew Perry Says He Doesn’t Even Remember Any of the Last Thirty Years
by Anonymous | reply 72 | March 28, 2022 4:58 PM |
Not exactly surprising that the actor with substance abuse problems doesn't remember anything, OP. I doubt he'll be around 10 years from now unless he radically changes his life.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 26, 2022 5:44 AM |
It's time we stop this farce about Friends. You could watch 10 episodes and never laugh. It was like a bunch of fugly people were all being held hostage in a couple rooms and having relations with each other. It was kept on the air by single women who had no lives.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 26, 2022 5:50 AM |
What’s next? David Schwimmer doesn’t remember whining his way through every episode?!
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 26, 2022 5:53 AM |
This is starting to sound like a PR stunt they are pulling together. He was never handsome but he looked good in 1994 with the 90s floppy hair.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 26, 2022 6:02 AM |
Matthew Perry has had life long drug abuse problem though. He's said much earlier that his drug problem was so bad that he didn't remember shooting an entire season, (#4 I think?) at all. His appearance, mainly because of weight fluctuation was changing throughout the series. He did have a handsome look briefly during the earlier seasons though.

Retrograde amnesia is to "Friends" what cancer was to "The Conqueror."
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 26, 2022 6:24 AM |
Is this really a quote from him, about the chinless man in the mirror? It sounds like a parody.
At least he has some self-awareness.
I wish I could take Matthew in and help him gain control over his life, release the self loathing. There's time for him to enjoy life before he exits.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 26, 2022 6:47 AM |
Wealth and fame is wasted on people like him. Although reading wikipedia it seems he was desperate for it... 'Friends was hugely successful, and Perry, along with his co-stars, became international celebrities – something Perry had long hoped for. "There was steam coming out of my ears, I wanted to be famous so badly," he told The New York Times in 2002. "You want the attention, you want the bucks, and you want the best seat in the restaurant.'

Help someone stop using drugs through therapy? Good luck with that. All the negative consequences on his health haven't been enough of an incentive for him to stop.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 26, 2022 7:07 AM |
OP, you made all of that up. No where in the article does it mention anything like your claims.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 26, 2022 7:08 AM |
He's the youngest of the cast yet looks the oldest. David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow are the ones who aged the best. Maybe he should do a low budget Canadian TV show or sober up for Hallmark. Take advantage of the duel citizenship to make easy money.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 26, 2022 7:08 AM |
[/bold]I can't believe anyone thought OP's claim and quote were real.[/bold]
It's obviously a bit of mean-spirited satire, but obvious satire none the less. But if you aren't sure, you can EASILY click on the link and skim the article for the "quote" and see that neither it, nor nothing like it, is there.
DL really is filled with dummies, drunks, and dupes.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 26, 2022 7:08 AM |
Matthew was overlooked by the Academy for his supporting performance as the rapey boyfriend in the Tony Danza family non-classic She's Out of Control. To this day, I still say "You teasing...little...bitch" with his proto-Chandler inflections.
Danza's daughter was being courted by Chandler Bing AND Bobby Briggs!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 26, 2022 7:27 AM |
That's sad. And yes, friends is a awful television show. I am proud to have only watched one episode (the pilot).
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 26, 2022 7:52 AM |
Maybe you just have no sense of humour, R16. "Friends" went on for far too long but it wasn't awful.

The quote might be made up, but Perry’s drug and booze issues where/are so bad that he truly did have blackouts.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 26, 2022 9:54 AM |
Perry talked in the reunion special about how he started taking it all too much to heart. If the audience at the taping didn't laugh hard enough at something he said, some bit he thought was supposed to "kill," he would be all tied up in knots about it. It was interesting, on the background of his well-documented problems of the time.

I wonder if he remembers Cox and Aniston's original faces?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 26, 2022 11:20 AM |
Friends was generic, unrealistic and cliche. Wouldn't say it's awful though. It has funny moments at least once an episode. The cast had great chemistry and looked good and it helped they did those dumb romance arcs which helped its longevity. The first season was probably the most effort from the writers and actors then after that once the show made it to the top five in ratings, everything just went on autopilot. The characters all became the actors real personalities. LeBlanc and Aniston are stoners so their characters went from being assholes to ditzy and well-meaning. Perry and Cox are cokeheads, so Chandler and Monica went from mature and sarcastic to neurotic and uptight. Schwimmer and Kudrow didn't want to be there, so their characters went from sweet to passive aggressive.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 26, 2022 3:41 PM |
Gen Z like Friends.
I don't think so. Most of Friends' audience is Gen X and Millennials. Some Gen Z got into it from Netflix but majority of Friends fans were people that were alive when it was airing and just like Seinfeld, Friends, Frasier, MASH and etc it was always on TV in syndication. I think it's more accurate to say Gen Z universally loves The Office.
What drugs was he into?
his Wikipedia doesn’t mention coke but it does say Percocet and Vicodin, Methadone, and alcohol.
I don't think so. Most of Friends' audience is Gen X and Millennials.
Yeah. It probably has some Gen Z fans, but they (and the later-born Millennials) are the ones clogging the internet with "Reasons Friends Doesn't Hold Up" articles. The violations cited include Kathleen Turner playing Chandler's MTF-trans father, the straight guys worrying about being perceived as gay, Ross not wanting his son playing with a doll, the fact that all six cast members and most of their love interests were white, and above all the comedic flashbacks with Monica in the fat suit (with the implication that she looked better after losing the weight).

by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 26, 2022 6:59 PM |
on another thread I actually speculated that Perry could improve his looks with a relatively safe and easy chin implant. Can't believe he's 46! Looks more like 64!
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 26, 2022 7:14 PM |
He needs to shave when he leaves the house--just invest in an electric shaver and shave himself when he watches TV in the morning.
Once your beard goes white you can't get away any more with a perpetual five o'clock shadow, and since he has such a weak chin the stubble just draws all the more attention to it.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 26, 2022 7:20 PM |
Friends isn't popular with Gen Z, as r42 pointed out. They have a whole list of grievances as to why it's problematic.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 26, 2022 7:58 PM |
I'm a Millennial and I think the most diehard fans are Millennials and young Xers. Just like with Seinfeld and Frasier.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 26, 2022 8:31 PM |
Some say he's lost his looks.
I say he NEVER had looks.
He was ALWAYS average looking.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | March 26, 2022 8:48 PM |
Yeah but he was a teen actor who grew into adult roles. I don't think he was meant to be a heartthrob. He was cast because he's snarky and everyman-esque. Just like Justin Bateman or Tobey Maguire.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 26, 2022 9:03 PM |
So I guess we're going to play this game for the whole cast and crew? When you run out, maybe we can expand it to anyone, anywhere, who ever watched the program?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 26, 2022 9:10 PM |
That article is wrong. Perry is not 46, he's 52. And doesn't look at day over 64.

by Anonymous | reply 60 | March 27, 2022 12:34 AM |
Perry, LeBlanc and Aniston lucked out on Friends becoming a success. They were in so many failed one-season shows. I imagine if it failed too, it would have killed their TV careers. Cox is an odd exception because she was in a few Hollywood films and Ace Ventura was a success. She likely would have still done Hollywood movies for a while due to her looks and screen presence. The success of Friends actually made it hard for her to become a Hollywood actress and also to fact she was too old to try again once the show ended.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | March 27, 2022 3:40 AM |
You know, I have an idea for a reboot. Since all the actors from Friends are suffering from early onset dementia ( I still think it was something from the set they were all exposed to) there could be a TV sitcom where they all move into a special wing built for them of the Screen Actor Guild retirement home, to live and be cared for and they slip in and out of reality between being the actors who they are, and the characters they played on Friends, this causes hilarity to ensue!

He was quite handsome in the first 3/4 or so seasons I agree R5. I actually preferred his look to LeBlanc's (who was a bit too pretty boy for me). Perry started to change around season 5 where you could see he was suffering some pretty severe weight gain which then goes up and down the rest of the show. Most noticeably he was quite large at the end of Season 6, but then becomes VERY thin in the first episode of Season 7 (after another bout of rehab I think) with takes place minutes after Season 6's finale in-show.
He started to gain weight again that season and just couldn't keep it off long-term. It ruined his looks which became sweaty and blurred.

However, the later part of season 3 had Perry's severe weight LOSS. There was a lot of media and internet chatter about it at the time.
His first stint in drug rehab was between seasons 3 and 4, and then he looked good again at the start of 4. I remember him taking the stage at the Emmys (which was prior to Friends' season premiere) to present an award or make an introduction, and he got a big hand. Everyone was relieved he wasn't skeletal anymore. That was supposed to be Courteney's beat.
You're right that he yo-yo'd a lot for the rest of the series.

I'll have to re-watch R65 but I'm sure you're right. Such a shame what addiction does to one's body and looks.
And poor Courtney. She must have received extremely dubious advice about her appearance. She looked great in that one episode of Seinfeld and her first few seasons in Friends. Then she got far too thin and had too much plastic surgery.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | March 27, 2022 12:35 PM |
Courtney Cock’s Cougartown show was a moderate success though. Definitely did better than anything Perry was in post-Friends.
How does that bloated mess keep getting work?
by Anonymous | reply 67 | March 27, 2022 3:24 PM |
Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston are the only ones that have names for themselves outside of the Friends. While the other four still work regularly, they will never not be associated with the Friends brand.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | March 27, 2022 3:41 PM |
Well, back in 2013, they seemed to remember things. Matthew still looked pretty good, here. A little overweight, but healthy. I believe this was during a period of sobriety? I really enjoyed this, if for no other reason than I love Lisa Kudrow & her giggle.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | March 28, 2022 12:31 AM |
He's a former child actor. Did he have stage parents?
by Anonymous | reply 70 | March 28, 2022 1:02 AM |
Perry's performance of the central role in Studio 60 (he was the Sorkin proxy) was actually really strong. It made me think he was a better dramatic actor than I'd expected. But the show itself was such a sour, petty mess. There was only so much the cast could do.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | March 28, 2022 7:24 AM |
Perry isn't that bad an actor. He has good comedic timing. I don't think he had much to work with on Friends. David Schwimmer and Courteney Cox were probably the worst actors on the show. Cox though kinda works in a "so bad it's good" type of way. Aniston, Perry and Kudrow probably the strongest comedic actors.
