Kroger brand Ice Cream

Anyone else a fan?

I don't know what they do but this cheaper choice actually tastes better than the premium stuff like Talenti, Haagen Daas, etc...

Just had some "Fairy Magic" (ha!) which was pink with white chocolate pieces and bubblegum swirl and it was terrific.

My other faves are Brookie, PB&J, Rocky Road and the Honey & Graham Cracker flavors.

by Anonymousreply 98June 9, 2022 9:23 AM

I'm afraid you're alone on this one, OP. Not a fan of Kroger brand ice cream, sorry.

by Anonymousreply 1March 25, 2022 4:02 PM

They use sugar in it. The Denali Moose Tracks is a chocoholic's wet dream.

by Anonymousreply 2March 25, 2022 5:58 PM

You've never had Graeter's, OP

by Anonymousreply 3March 25, 2022 7:05 PM

R2 I was about to recommend that one. They have a raspberry dark chocolate one that is very good too. Fairy Dream is gross, OP, but more for you!

by Anonymousreply 4March 25, 2022 7:08 PM

Apologies "Fairy Magic"

by Anonymousreply 5March 25, 2022 7:08 PM

R2 and R4, the Kroger Denali Moose Tracks Extreme is amazing if you're a chocoholic!

by Anonymousreply 6March 25, 2022 7:12 PM

Is it actually ice cream or "frozen dairy dessert"?

by Anonymousreply 7March 25, 2022 7:41 PM

No. Lacking a better choice, I bought some once, and it tasted like cheap ice cream does, more of the box and the box coatings than of ice cream.

But then I like clean flavors of ice cream, none of this 99 ingredients dumped in.

[quote]"Fairy Magic" (ha!) which was pink with white chocolate pieces and bubblegum swirl and it was terrific

You expect us to respect your taste in ice cream after putting that in your mouth?

by Anonymousreply 8March 25, 2022 7:59 PM

You type fat, OP.

by Anonymousreply 9March 25, 2022 8:20 PM

No frozen treat. It's Kroger Delux, and it's good shit! OMG! I like the Cookies n Cream, the Death By Chocolate, the Baby Ruth, the Lemon Cheesecake, and the Pineapple Sherbet. Years ago, they used to make an incredible Reeses Peanut Butter Cup which was out of bounds! I guess it was cost prohibitive, so the ceased production.

Great iced cream!

by Anonymousreply 10March 25, 2022 8:23 PM

Also a fan of Denali Moose Track ice cream.

Dragon's Dream looks more like Nutritionist's Nightmare, but a friend had some and it was surprisingly good. I've bought it a couple of times, since, though I usually stick with Haagen Dazs or Talenti.

It's purple but has a very slight coconut flavor (to me) which is supposed to be toasted marshmallow.

Kroger ice cream freezes harder than a rock. Flavor is so-so.

by Anonymousreply 14March 25, 2022 8:58 PM

It isn't exactly the cleanest ingredient-wise, but I DO enjoy the Private Selection pints of sorbet, and most recently the limited edition flavors. The Orange Blossom Olive Oil ice cream was especially good. It has a caramel swirl that is flavored with Orange Blossom. The floral essence is a lovely complement. I don't know why I didn't have olive oil ice cream before, because it's delicious. Private Selection isn't haute cuisine, but it is good for the price point.

Oh, and the Strawberry Champagne is disgusting. Avoid it completely.

I have yet to see Fluffer Nutter in my area but I'd try it. The peanut butter and jelly ice cream is surprisingly delicious. The savory peanut butter flavor balances out the sweet grape jelly swirl just perfectly.

The only bad Kroger ice cream I ever bought was the orange Llama one. Two spoonfulls and it went straight in the trash.

by Anonymousreply 16March 25, 2022 11:14 PM

How old are you OP? Six?

by Anonymousreply 17March 25, 2022 11:19 PM

We prefer Hershey's Ice Cream in the pints.

by Anonymousreply 18March 25, 2022 11:22 PM

Ben and Jerry's or get the fuck out. If I'm polluting my body with ice cream then I want the best.

by Anonymousreply 19March 25, 2022 11:22 PM

Count me in as a FAT WHORE, and Kroger Delux fan.

by Anonymousreply 20March 25, 2022 11:26 PM

Ben and Jerry's is disgusting now.

Hasn't been good in nearly a decade now.

Years ago B&J did a key lime pie ice cream that was the fucking bomb!

by Anonymousreply 21March 25, 2022 11:28 PM

I don't have a Kroger's and I don't like supermarket/Breyer's brand ice creams, though Aldi's isn't that bad. My favorite is Haagen-Dazs, and today I had Strawberry, nothing but cream, skim milk, strawberries, cane sugar, and egg yolks. So, so good.

As for Ben & Jerry's, their quality can vary. I've had their Topped Caramel Brownie ice cream and liked it a number of times over the past year. I bought a pint last week, however, and it was awful. Maybe it got refrosted. I don't know. But I'm never buying it again.

by Anonymousreply 22March 25, 2022 11:32 PM

R21 if the key lime pie flavor isn't available then you have the option of licking the bottom of your shoe for the next best thing. You have SHIT taste in ice cream.

by Anonymousreply 23March 25, 2022 11:34 PM

You should know, you eat old people's excrement.

by Anonymousreply 24March 25, 2022 11:41 PM

The Blue Bunny brand Cherry with chocolate chunks is really good.

I do notice some brands now state their ice cream is a "frozen dairy dessert". I noticed this when I bought Friendly's Pistachio. It was more like ice milk than ice cream.

Some brands taste so nasty and greasy. It's obvious these ice cream companies are now using cheaper ingredients.

I don't live near a Kroger so I cannot even try this ice cream. The only available brands at my local supermarkets are Blue Bunny, Edy's, Friendly's, Turkey Hill, Ben & Jerry's, Talenti, Haagen Daas, Krasdale (which is total garbage) and Costco carries their own Kirkland brand but only carries Vanilla, I cannot stand Vanilla ice cream.

Costco also carries a brand from South Korea called Melona, which is amazing, they are called "ice bars", to me Melona tastes like a sorbet. Or a combo of ice cream and a popsicle.

by Anonymousreply 25March 25, 2022 11:42 PM

Nothing beats Talenti pistachio...oh my lord.

by Anonymousreply 26March 25, 2022 11:58 PM

R25 I'm a fan of Turkey Hill.

by Anonymousreply 27March 26, 2022 2:23 AM

[quote] "Years ago B&J did a key lime pie ice cream that was the fucking bomb!"

R21 My all-time favorite Ben & Jerry's flavor was discontinued, so I feel your pain. I never had the Key Lime Pie though, and it sounds delicious.

My all-time favorite Ben & Jerry's is "From Russia With Buzz".

I forgot what brand's Rocky Road I liked, but I remember the reason I liked it, it didn't have a lot of the marshmallow 'fluff'. This brand's Rocky Road was very chocolatey with lots of almonds. It also wasn't super sweet.

Think it was either Turkey Hill or Edy's. Wish I could remember.

by Anonymousreply 29March 27, 2022 10:06 AM

To me, Breyer's has always tasted like ice milk, in fact I never see this brand anymore. Are they still in business?

by Anonymousreply 30March 27, 2022 10:06 AM

I eat ice cream rarely, but I recently had some of Kroger's Private Selection mango sorbet, which was pretty good.

by Anonymousreply 31March 27, 2022 10:12 AM

The ice cream find of the year for me has been “Circus Cookie” - it is Great Savings the Walmart house brand. It s delicious - it has huge chunks of those “MOTHER’S” pink and white frosted animal cookies in it.

by Anonymousreply 32March 27, 2022 10:34 AM

I don't eat ice cream very much but at Christmas Kroger had an egg nog flavor that was really good. Given how cheap it is I'm sure it's not the highest quality ingredients but it tastes surprisingly good.

by Anonymousreply 33March 27, 2022 10:50 AM

[quote]Behold: A Data lounge universal love

I'm eating the Fluffernutter flavor now and it is incredible. Just the right balance of sweet and peanut butter.

This shit is dangerous.

by Anonymousreply 34April 24, 2022 3:51 AM

The flavors are blah. Where's coffee? Can't they afford it?

I left some out on the counter by mistake and it had shrunk to a greasy, watery substance half the original size. It was all air bubbles.

by Anonymousreply 35April 24, 2022 5:53 AM

I bought mint moose tracks yesterday. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm sure it will be good.

by Anonymousreply 36April 24, 2022 6:03 AM

The lactose gods have cursed me, but when I'm willing to go for a walk on the bloated side, I don't mind Kroger's Prime Selection brand of ice creams - especially chocolate ganache and homestyle vanilla.

by Anonymousreply 37April 24, 2022 6:06 AM

Yes. Someone I know mixes Pepsi with a whole gallon of it in a big bowl.

by Anonymousreply 38April 24, 2022 6:10 AM

Aldis has a good pure vanilla ice cream. The best ice cream is hard as a rock in the freezer because pure ingredients mean NO corn syrup, no any kind of fructose, no stablizers, no gums, no whipping it with air and the crap mentioned before, real milk, cream, sugar, flavor. The only store bought one that is good and follows these guidelines is Haagen-Dazs. The purest ice cream melts down to a pure liquid, no foam. I am an ice cream connoisseur and my father was an ag major. He was spouting off these esoteric comments through our road trips.

Is Krogers the same as Raleys in CA? Searching for spumoni

by Anonymousreply 40April 24, 2022 6:30 AM

I’m still holding out for the reappearance of DL favorite Haagen-Dazs Mayan Chocolate.

by Anonymousreply 41April 24, 2022 6:35 AM

[quote]Is Krogers the same as Raleys in CA?

No. Ralphs appears to be the main Kroger brand in Cali.

by Anonymousreply 42April 24, 2022 6:51 AM

I'm a huge fan of Kroger ice cream. "No added sugar" Peanut Butter Swirl, Rocky Road and Vanilla.

I love it!

by Anonymousreply 43April 24, 2022 6:58 AM

R39 and R19, I am about to change your elitist lives with one word: Graeter’s. Made since 1870, using the French Pot process, 2-1/2 gallons at a time, hand packed, it is insanely good. You’re welcome.

by Anonymousreply 44April 24, 2022 9:42 AM

Häagen-Dazs was bought by Nestle. They put shit in their cream now. And a pint of HG is now 14oz. B&J also sold out to some corporation. Read the ingredients next time you're in a groc. store. It's all shit now.

Does anybody remember Frusen Glädjé? When I lived in Olympia, WA in 1984 I used to buy it at the local small groc. store. It was hellishly good.

by Anonymousreply 45April 24, 2022 10:04 AM

Nothing gets you fat whores going like a good ice cream thread.

by Anonymousreply 46April 24, 2022 10:06 AM

@R37 - they make some varieties lactose free. I just bought some lactose free Butter Pecan. Look for it.

by Anonymousreply 47April 24, 2022 12:07 PM

The fats are tiresome.

by Anonymousreply 48April 24, 2022 12:09 PM

R38 must be Shirley Feeney.

by Anonymousreply 49April 24, 2022 1:28 PM

I've never tried their regular or deluxe brands, but their Private Selection ice cream is quite good. It's nowhere near the quality of Ben & Jerry's or Graeter's , but when you catch it on sale you can get three pints for the price of one of theirs.

by Anonymousreply 50April 24, 2022 3:14 PM

I had stopped eating B&J's cause the quality had gotten terrible a few years back.

Have they improved?

by Anonymousreply 51April 24, 2022 4:46 PM

One has to live in an area that would have something named Krogers to experience this Ice cream. We don't.

by Anonymousreply 52April 24, 2022 4:58 PM

I buy something called Full Circle non-dairy chocolate almond crunch frozen dessert. So delicious. Much better than some more popular brands.

by Anonymousreply 55April 24, 2022 5:32 PM

I can’t keep ice cream in the house. When I want some, I go to one of the many homemade ice cream stands relatively near me. I get the hugest size because that’s still less than what I would eat if I brought ice cream home.

by Anonymousreply 56April 24, 2022 5:39 PM

Get a personal ice cream maker ya fat lazy whores!

by Anonymousreply 57April 24, 2022 7:21 PM

R52 Ralph's and King Soupers are also Kroger's.

[quote]I had stopped eating B&J's cause the quality had gotten terrible a few years back. Have they improved?

I don't know about their regular ice cream, but the texture and taste of their non-dairy has greatly improved. I like the non-dairy Netflix and Chill better than the original version.

by Anonymousreply 61April 24, 2022 9:16 PM

Yes! I love Kroger ice cream too! And when it’s on sale, it’s even better. Just as good as the brand names. I love the Banana Split one.

by Anonymousreply 62April 24, 2022 9:18 PM

I wait all year for the peppermint flavor at Christmas time. So, so good.

by Anonymousreply 63April 24, 2022 9:28 PM

Kroger ice cream is just ice cream from one of the major manufacturers put into Kroger packaging. It's that way with almost all store brand foods. As many different store brand products as most grocery stores have you don't think they all maintain manufacturing facilities to make all that stuff, do you? I know the Walmart yogurts are made for them by Dannon.

by Anonymousreply 64April 24, 2022 9:38 PM

I loathe Kroger in all its forms.

Their customer service is shitty. Their store brands are shitty.

They took over Mariano's in Chicago and ruined what was once a great store.

They have a store called King Soopers, which is the dumbest name ever.

And they're super anti employee and anti union. Fuck them. Fuck them right in the ear.

by Anonymousreply 65April 24, 2022 9:42 PM

I like Braum’s, but it’s a fairly small regional chain of fast food restaurant/small grocery store.

Fresh scooped Breyers, now long gone, was very good. Be careful of Breyers store bought. Most of the flavors are labeled Frozen Dairy Dessert. Just a few flavors are called Ice Cream.

The BEST Ben and Jerry's flavor was Wavy Gravy, unfortunately they stopped making that FABULOUS flavor in 2006.

R81 Three people in my family have worked at milk plants in two different countries. All three say, whether it's the expensive brands or store brands, they all use the same shit. The only thing different are the labels.

But if you want to keep paying top dollar for a fancy label thinking you're getting something different to the cheap version, be my guest. Companies love gullible people like you.

by Anonymousreply 86April 25, 2022 3:32 AM

R84 Some people use ice cream makers still. I have a Donvier Japanese one from garage sale. I use whole milk, very little sugar and fresh fruit in season. I think commercial ice cream is sickeningly sweet, but that’s just me.

by Anonymousreply 87April 25, 2022 8:03 AM

[quote] I don't know what they do but this cheaper choice actually tastes better than the premium stuff like Talenti, Haagen Daas, etc...

Probably more sugar, fat and/or salt.

A lot of the most unhealthful and poorest-quality foods are the most stimulating to taste buds. It's not an accident or a secret. It's why fast food is so successful and why poorer people who can't afford healthier foods end up obese and sick. Lots of mass-marketed junk food is full of substances that trigger ongoing cravings, which of course sugar alone does especially without the presence of fats.

A long time ago, someone I worked with raved and raved and raved about S'mores ice cream from Food Lion to the point I went there and bought it. I never shopped at Food Lion and was surprised how inexpensive everything was. The ice cream was insanely sweet and I was kind of taken aback with the first few bites but then I could not stop eating it. I ate half the container and then within a short while, I went back to finish it. I bought it a couple more times and the same thing happened, making me feel like a crack junkie or something.

Notice how when you go to an independent ice cream shop that makes its own, you can have a small bowl and feel satisfied without desperately needing more more more.
