Well r16 there had been a rumor that after Billy was briefly let go from Days that he might end up on either GH or Y&R as a possible recast Morgan Corinthos or Kyle Abbott.

Bringing back Mari Jo Mason in a story like this, which started out being "Keemo-centric" would have actually made sense.

Not only was Mari Jo part of the original Luan-Keemo storyline, but she's actually ... you know, STILL ALIVE. .. Just say she was 'quietly released' a year or two ago.

And they still could have introduced Keemo's daughter, but how 'bout we also learn that Mari Jo herself was secretly pregnant with Aunt Jack's baby when they locked her up in the loony bin? She never told anyone at the facility who the father was, so the baby boy was placed with some unknown relative of Miss Mason's. With no sorasing, this young man would now be around 26, but for consistency with Jack's son, Kyle, we'd make him a couple years older.

This soap desperately needs sexy YOUNG guys.

Instead, one can only guess that we're going to get another retread of Phyllis vs. Diane - two old bitches fighting over a senior citizen.

Longtime viewer…….can’t believe they are bringing back MM and not recasting. Can’t act, VERY unlikeable, bad attitude, adds nothing to what has become a nursing home baby sitter. Really, not hot and no connection to the audience or fellow actors.

I like Robert Newman as Ashland. He should've been Ashland from day one. I love Richard Burgi also, and I think he's sexier than Newman, but I prefer how he's playing Ashland to Burgi. Burgi played a serial killer well on GH, but being a conman is totally different. You deliver lines to those your conning differently. I do think Amelia is intentionally not being intimate/affectionate to Robert, though. Hope he doesn't have bad breath

I have to disagree. I don't think Robert Newman is doing a good job as Ashland. Playing morally ambiguous characters is not his strong suit.

When Josh Lewis first arrived on GL in 1981, he was a morally ambiguous character but leaning to the darker side. (Josh Lewis is the one, not Nola, who broke up Kelly and Morgan). And Robert Newman wasn't that good at playing the that gray area.

It really wasn't until Reva joined the show in late 1983 that Josh's character really began to be defined and they made him into a good guy.

We're seeing the same thing play out 40 years later. If Ashland remains on the canvas, they'll have to nice him up.

Likely it will be revealed the character Maura West played was never the real Diane Jenkins. She was an imposter put in place by Victor or Ashland or somebody.

Lets not forget that Victor substituted Marco for Jack. So, he could have done the same thing with Diane.

All of remaining shows have bizarrely degenerated into something out of bad fan fiction.

Mark Grossman is doing better as Adam than anyone has done in the past. MM, MW, and Sphincterina should all go to some alternate universe where we would never have to behold their countenances or modes of speaking ever again. I can't think of three actors I dislike more.

As I recall, Walters is the one who went to the soap press during her last run on Y&R and swore off Botox saying she'd never do it again because she couldn't stand how it affected her acting-reactions.

It seems like the writers can only imagine scenes where people talk to each other ... nothing ever really happens. On the other soaps, there is some activity. I know activity doesn't equal drama, but there needs to be a balance between action scenes and talking to scenes.

R96, Devon offered Nate the position of being his (Devon's) COO once the merger between Hamilton-Winters and Chancellor goes through. Technically, Nate is not a COO yet, but he was offered the job.

I wish Y&R would bring Imani in to shake things up between Nate and Elena. I also think she could shake things up between Lily and Billy.

R107 Imani was already brought in at Chancellor, along with Amanda as part of us legal team. She began sowing a seed of discord in an initial meeting she was uninvited to but ingratiated herself in. So the is potential for her to add some dreams but the show is not balanced, IMO. It moves at a snake pace and the is far too much focusing on people like Phyllis with nothing to do, or even Billy with entire episodes of soliloquy. Jack going to California was stretched over 2 weeks and that was ridiculous. Then you have the Newmans forever dominating the soap with repeated storylines. Y&R could be more interesting if they changed things a bit; a start would be getting rid of Josh Griffiths.

The only interesting thing happening on this show is the Newman/Ashland Locke story. R111, you are correct, the show is not balanced. This is a one-hour show, there should be at least two major stories going on, but it seems like they can only focus on one major story at a time. It constantly feels like something else should be happening with the other characters/storylines, but it never does. Perhaps the addition of Allie and Taylor Jensen will bring an interesting story. I am afraid that it will just be a repeat of what the show has done in the past between Jack, Phyllis, and Diane.

I miss the good ole days when Braeden would openly bitch to the press about how shitty the show was.

Nate is a doctor, so it makes total sense that he become a COO.

Well r116 he spent all this time writing toward being a skilled surgeon, only to have his career taken away when Devon punched his lights out (for smashing his then gf, Elena) and he injured his hand. So I guess the next step for him is to have a career change. Why he didn't sue the billionaire Devon for his injury and loss of a career, I will never know. That would've been some good drama, with ramifications to the Winters clan in the future.

My biggest issue with this is why was it a good idea to bring Diane back, it even a doppelganger, when it would've been easier to bring back Drucilla? Someone above said Eric Braden spoke smack about the soap he was on with no consequences; yet Victoria Rowell had been in exile for over a decade because of some "fiction" book that seemed to blast a few of her costars?

R106 Yeah ... Much of what Griffith has done during this stint can be classified as expository writing. Characters come on and they start telling us a story about something that happened, but it's just talk. In most cases we don't even get flashbacks. A perfect example of this was Amanda's backstory, where she was given up for adoption and the subsequent murder mystery surrounding her father's death. .. This story took up a lot of airtime, and it was basically just Amanda talking to a few new characters in her hotel room over a long period of time. In the end, we didn't even see Sutton on trial. Amanda simply told us about her testimony on the stand. .. lol .. Apparently, we're supposed to be interested in this all talk, no action material.

R121 which is how Downton Abbey was written for years....it's so boring.

At least with Downton they give the audience beautiful sets, great location shoots, period costumes, and special event episodes .. Plus,, 52 episodes over six years with lots of time in between seasons is a completely different animal.

Keeping with the Amanda story, with that, we were supposed to be interested in this murder that happened over 30 years ago involving characters we'd never met before. This is the type of fictional story that's better presented in a mystery novel, instead of listening to people endlessly talk about it in a hotel room.

I remember one episode where Amanda gushed to someone about the wonderful time she'd had going to a "meet the family dinner" over the weekend at Sutton's home. She told us that she'd gotten to do the meet and greet and get to know everyone in her new family better. .. I was like WTF? When did that happen? .. Well, it didn't. She was just (briefly talking about it.

imo - That's the type of scene that should have been depicted and potentially lasted over the course of two, or even three episodes to show all these new family members interacting with Amanda and among themselves in their own element. As I recall, Amanda said she'd met Sutton's wife, Naya's husband (Eric Benedict), a great aunt, and some other. .. I would have added a couple other interesting relatives and perhaps even a servant or two. These people could have been used to supplement the long-ago murder mystery, as people who are keeping quiet for whatever reason or serve as loyal confidants -- thereby adding to the suspicions about what really happened to Amanda's father, Richard.

But no, we got nothing like that.

They made all that effort to create this elaborate backstory for Amanda, including a murder mystery, and it went exactly nowhere. When the show doesn't care about the storylines or characters, how is the audience supposed to?

Another recent backstory scene I wanted to see was teenagers Bobby & Real Ashland and their dramatic encounter with Ashland's abusive father, which led to the two boys running away from home some 40 years ago.

The father could have been a real nasty piece of work, even accusing the two teenagers of being sissy boys .. lol. .. And if Y&R had even a little budget, they could also have shown these teen actors in the subsequent car crash that killed Real Ashland. We'd then see Young Bobby assume his friend's identity and go to the initial job interview with Camilla Rhodes. She'd could have been played by some well-known soap actress in a cameo. Just seeing some of these made-up characters instead of hearing about them would help the story register more.

In the past, Y&R did things like that. .. Recall, when the soap told Kevin's backstory, they took us back to his childhood in Detroit and showed us what home life was like with Joan Van Ark and Terrible Tom. We saw 5-year old Kevin being locked in the small, dark closet, while teenager Michael was on the other side of the door trying to calm his brother down. .. Similarly, when Mackenzie Browning's backstory was eventually revealed, we got some shadowy flashbacks of pervy stepdad, Ralph, trying to rape Mackenzie when her mother was at work, which led her to running away. .. Even when something as stupid as the Brad Carlton retcon was written, they showed an accident scene where Teen George exchanged wallet contents with his dead friend, Real Brad, who was said to be a Good Samaritan trying to help the Kaplan Family.

What kind of hand injury did Nate sustain -- as the "punchee" -- that ruined his surgical career, yet doesn't seem to be evident in his day-to-day interactions? I knew a surgeon who lost consciousness (while his blood pressure medication needs were being sorted out) and collapsed, breaking a wrist when he hit the pavement. He was in a cast for a month, but as soon as it was off he spent a day or two regaining muscle memory/dexterity working on a suture practice pad before heading back into the O.R.

Braeden will be 81 a week from today. Is he the oldest performer on the show now?

Y&R has always been a talky, more old fashioned soap, but it was always building towards something. And in the boring parts, you'd be distracted by the lushness of the production. Current Y&R doesn't have that. No story and no lush.

I think the story that no one talks about, regarding Y&R, is that Y&R has no longer has a budget. Days pretty much takes up all the no budget space in the soap world conversation, but if you notice Y&R doesn't have any money either. No, they're not shooting 8 months ahead or cycling cast, but look at the show and look at the scenes. Y&R is broke.

You're probably asking what does that have to do with anything. Well, budget impacts story and the types of story you can tell and how you tell them. If your soap is telling more than showing, it's because they can't afford to do anything else.

Also, Josh Griffith is not a bad writer, but compared to the other 3 Y&R has no story. You may not like what the other 3 are doing, but Y&R is doing nothing. And you might argue that it's the Bill Bell style, but it's not. Bell knew to build a week and structure a show.

And let me also add, this is nothing like Pete Lemay. Lemay's show was character driven, but again it was building towards something, plus it was a different time and era for soaps. When Lemay came back to AW in the late 80s, he wasn't doing what he did in the 70s.

Yes, it's clear that Y&R has no budget. The difference is Days has been dealing with budge cuts for the past 15 years and has learned to live with it, including cycling in and out various characters.

Y&R still seems to be in shock that it's budget has been cut and hasn't figured out what to do. The show hasn't had the good sense to cut high salaried stars like Days did with Deidre and Drake back in 2008. Hasn't figured out how to cycle in and out actors for three month arcs. Hasn't figured out that a single set can be redecorated multiple different ways for different scenes.

Did the budget cuts also affect the writing? Are they contracting out to high school students?

Nothing seems to have any stakes to it. I'd actually be fine with no budgets and no sets if someone knew how to tell a story with stakes and using people we know and care about in a way that works. Or connect new people so we can care about them.

I wish I could find the YR background music I remember......I always called it "the creep" it was a very slow set of notes and strings and then there would be a dramatic sound.....and then it would start "creeping" again.

Sorry R137 , but I call bullshit. Griffith was writing DAYS not so many years ago, so he, now as writer and exec producer of Y&R, should understand how to deal with budget constraints. Oh yeah, and Y&R has 1/4 of the cast and a million+ more daily viewers than DAYS. There needs to be a better excuse why this show sucks. Funny how NBC/Peacock are giving DAYS a lot of love. Maybe CBS wants an extra hour of The Talk?

I think the reason the show sucks is because its oldest and highest paid cast members have held the show hostage for years. In a way that is not the case elsewhere. Dee and Drake were fired at DAYS and they knew when they came back that they weren't the bosses in the way they were before. GH had Geary and now Benard with a little power, but most of the rest do as told and thank the bursar for their paycheck on the way out the door.

But the demands of Braeden, Mel, Aunt Jack have frozen half the story - I'm sure they let TPTB know when they are displeased with stories in the next generation of Newman/Abbott too.

It will never happen, but there needs to be a new family introduced to replace the Newmans and Abbotts, in the way those families were intro'd to replace the Brooks and Fosters. A new white middle of the road family typical of Wisconsin, to interact with the boujie Winters/Hamilton clan, and whatever other remaining cast members might remain.

I have been watching General Hospital the last few weeks. I am impressed that they actually have their teenage characters in storylines that are interesting. There are about five teenagers on the show, and the other adult characters are part of their storyline. Y&R does not give Faith and Moses anything to do. The show hardly gave Charlie and Maddie anything to do when they were on the show.

I thought the show was brave to portray a newly SORASed Summer in an unsympathetic position as the person who was bullying Jamie. She was not a likeable person, yet Fenn was gaga for her.

However, a day or two later, they wanted him to sign to a 3 year contract. He wasn't willing to do three years, but agreed to do a one year contract.

So, clearly the show has plans for Ashland into the May sweeps. Be interesting to see if they do anything with the character beyond that.

And the two guys for Aimovig also appear frequently. Yes, Y&R might cause migraines .. lol. .. I could, however, do without 52-year old "Widower Stephen" in that rather lonnnnng Botox commercial. As much as I like Robert Newman, he's just not good at playing a bad guy. He's really not convincing with his whole I'm innocent/misunderstood routine.

Every scene that his Ashland is in feels forced, like its all an act. Nothing he's saying or doing is coming through the screen as natural or believable.

Perhaps if he had been playing Ashland from the beginning, r274, he would seem more believable in the role. But I don't associate him with any of Ashland's lies and manipulations, other than the texting between him and whoever was supposed to kill Michael Baldwin. Unless Richard Burgi had active covid, they should have kept him in his role as Ashland. Through no fault of his own, Robert Newman just isn't cutting it.

I am not crazy about Robert Newman in the role of Ashland either. I am not opposed to recasts. I like the current Adam, Faith, Chance, and Nate, but something seems a bit off about Newman in the role. Perhaps it's what R274 stated.

Phyllis vs. Victoria over the hotel had some promise, but Heinle is so tepid plus the writers had Nick step in and basically end it before it could really take off.

Jack needs to get Phyllis pregnant. Meanwhile Kyle gets Summer pregnant at the same time. Kyle and Summer's baby dies, but is switched with Jack and Phyllis' kid. Lots of drama.

If Y&R desperately needs a storyline for Phyllis, I would suggest they have RockOn return, leading to Phyllis and Traci hotly competing over which of them will reprise her role as "Mrs. Danny Romalotti" and beard for him again during his Final Farewell Tour. .. This would be in conjunction with the release Danny's new hit single, "If Only You Knew (the Real Me)."

The Staff has been a disaster since returning. Tognoni was much better in the role.

That homely useless Alan Sarapa says that Jordi was dumped to pay for Susan Walters.

I've read a several reviews of the "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" production that Chrissy in currently starring in as Big Daddy, off-Broadway. The production is getting very mixed reviews. But I had to laugh at this paragraph in one of the professional critic reviews, because it sounds similar to how he plays Michael La Baldwin at times:

It's hard to muster much interest in "What Really Happened to Ashland Locke?" He's dead. I think Trevor St. John is an interesting casting choice, but I have no faith in the show’s ability to create or write a good role for him. It’s been so long since this show’s been watchable, which is a shame because I did watch it off and on for a long time. I think Jeanne Cooper’s death was when I finally checked out for good.

Nothing against TSJ, but instead of bringing in yet one more actor/character over 50, they should think about a new guy in his early 20s. It is The YOUNG and the Restless, after all.

They missed the boat by not having Allie reveal that she's not an only child, and that when her brother turned 18, he took off, because "he always got along better with Mom anyway." And the last time she heard from her missing-in-action brother was a text message wanting to know when he should expect to get his half of Keemo's estate.

Jack does some digging and discovers that his grandson has been trying to break into modeling. When Jack runs into Lauren at Society, he mentions this to her, and she's impressed by the number of InstaHo followers the young man is attracting on social media. Lauren thinks she could use him in Fenmore's next undergear campaign. Sitting next to his wife, Michael immediately perks up and, upon spying the photo on her phone, concurs saying, "You know, he'd probably SMASH that new line of jockstraps and thongs you're planning to sell. I could see him in every color under the rainbow."

Right. Because all the young characters they bring on are so exciting! Allie! Noah! Both are total snoozes.

And besides the long, involved, totally made-up back story with "Avery Clark" told entirely in flashbacks, JFP made sure that SB's character was connected to TWO legacy characters (Paul & Nikki) -- even though that meant writing the stupid (and totally impossible) "cult baby" retcon. .. Yet, even all that wasn't enough to save "Dullan," and not long after JFP was canned, SB's exit was announced.

DD got in trouble because he was critical of the show on twitter. .. No wait! .. He was HACKED !! (which no one believes). .. In any event, he lives so far away from the studio that he's not interested in coming in to do one episode where they give something that's just a little more than an underfive. And apparently, that's all they see him as now. .. So what's done is done. It will be quite telling if Dougie isn't even used for something when the 50th Anniversary gets closer.

"Tucker McCall" was created to undo the Jill-Kay mother/daughter crap, yet I also think that the character was brought in so that Y&R would have another actor of a certain age around in case EB and Sony couldn't come to terms during EB's much publicized 2009 contract negotiations, which went south. .. Recall, EB was making all kinds of noise in the press about the cut in pay they wanted, and he actually had to be written out for awhile. I think by hiring William Russ as the new mogul in town, they were sending EB a message.

The original Nate was creepy, with a murky past. His ex-gf died mysteriously - under his medical care. When they killed off Hillary, there was supposed a twist that Nate 'mercy killed' her, but they got rid of the original guy, and sort of sanitized him. That would have made him a FAR more intriguing character, so of course, it never got any play.

After paying her respects, Sharon then left with Tucker and the two were married.

Sharon DID marry Victor, and got control of Newman, running it with Adam. The show was horribly insane then - the last time I enjoyed it. Nikki had just married Jack - again - and within days Victor went missing, so Nikki left Jack before their honeymoon to find him. Victor ended up with Bonnie Franklin, playing a nun without a habit, in LA. Truly crazy stuff. Loved it.

Noah's "Glam Club" is unexciting. Instead of soemthing new, it looks like an extension of the lounge area at Society.

Is there a one-armed women's shop in GC. Victoria had this ridiculous blue gown on at the re-wedding, and at the club, Noah's old girlfriend looked as if she'd gone shopping there.

I actually enjoyed Victor and Tucker's scene. Some funny stuff. And the preview with Tucker and Ashley looks interesting and could work. There's been so much discussion about TSJ's age elsewhere. But seriously, he reads older than 51. And ED looks younger than 63. If I didn't know how old they are, I might guess they're both around 58. And I imagine with Jill hardly ever being around, it will never be referenced that Tucker and she are supposed to be the exact same age (65).

Back in May, show created a set for Mariah and Tessa's wedding back. The set was the top floor of some hotel or something like that.

Noah's club seems to be that set redressed and somewhat rearranged.
