The Academy loves to award stars who they feel are long overdue. Natalie Wood was one of the last stars of the Hollywood studio system. She already had 3 nominations but no awards so does anybody think the Academy would have eventually given her one?
Would Natalie Wood have ever won an Oscar if she hadn't died so early on?

No, too wooden.

She wasn't a great actress--not horrible, just limited. Three noms was probably as good as it would get.

Loved her in WSS. Should have been nommed and won

She didn't deserve an Oscar, no matter how long she might have lived. Cary Grant and Barbara Stanwyck had to make do with honorary awards, how could Natalie Wood measure up to them? No matter what roles she might have performed had she lived longer, she just wasn't a great talent.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 25, 2022 2:18 AM |
No. Thus endeth the thread.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 25, 2022 2:29 AM |
No.
Natalie wouldn't win an Oscar if she came back to life and dragged her zombie self to the microphones to accuse RJ of her death, and then starred in a movie of her death playing herself as the victim, and then DIED AGAIN when the death scene was filmed.
Why wouldn't she win?
Because it was often said when she was alive that she couldn't win an Oscar if RJ finally killed her and she came back as a zombie to make a movie of her death and then died again to rev up the sympathy votes, because the only time that Natalie Wood can act is when she's getting fucked and says she likes it.

I thought she was excellent in “This Properly is Condemned” and “Splendor in the Grass.” She made some fine films during the 1960s.

The Academy is just crazy for not recognizing such cinematic brilliance as "Stop, Uncle Fred, stop!" Life is so unfair...
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 25, 2022 2:57 AM |
She was one of the worst actresses to ever be nominated for an Oscar. Absolutely talent-free.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 25, 2022 2:59 AM |
After the highly successful Bob&Carol&Ted&Alice (1969) her films were pretty awful so unless she could have turned that trend around it seems unlikely that she would have won an Oscar in competition.

As horrendous an actress as she was, I have a feeling that, had she lived, Wood would have been at the forefront of AIDS activism in the same way Liz Taylor was and could have possibly gotten a Jean Hersholt.

She didn’t work much after her kids were born, but by 1970 she was lumped in with old Hollywood even though she was around the same age as some of the newer stars that emerged in the late 60’s/early 70’s.
I think she would’ve done the odd ensemble feature film, but could’ve done well as a TV movie queen.

[quote] but could’ve done well as a TV movie queen.
She was headed in that direction, for sure, having done some prestigious (if forgotten) TV movies and miniseries in the latter half of the 70s. And lord knows Brainstorm wouldn't have done anything for her career.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 25, 2022 3:12 AM |
She could've taken some of the roles Shirley MacLaine ended up doing in the 80s.

Such as what, R14, Cannonball Run II?
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 25, 2022 3:40 AM |
R15 I could see her as Aurora in Terms of Endearment.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 25, 2022 3:45 AM |
She and RJ owned part of 'Charlie's Angels' as payment for a TV movie or two the did for Aaron Spelling. I can see her having guested on 'Dynasty'.

You do know Shirley was several years older than Natalie (despite what Shirl claimed). Natalie would have been 43 when TOE filmed.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 25, 2022 3:56 AM |
Nah, she was washed-up....
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 25, 2022 3:58 AM |
She was relegated to TV movies by that point, and back then actors didn’t go back and forth between the mediums.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 25, 2022 4:42 AM |
R18 What? Shirley is listed as being four years older than Natalie on wikipedia. I don't think she ever lied about her age.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 25, 2022 4:44 AM |
Shirley claims to have been born in 1934. I remember when TOE was out and Shirley had just won the Oscar, People did a cover story on her. She was throwing a 50th birthday party for herself and Nicholson, who had been interviewed for the article, when told about it, said- Didn't we throw Shirley a 50th birthday party on the set of Terms of Endearment? And someone chimed in- And that was the second one we celebrated. So Shirl has likely fudged her birthdate a few years.
Anyway, Wood would have been horrendous casting for Aurora Greenway, even if she had been born in 1928.

Natalie would have made a fine Beth Jarrett.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 25, 2022 4:58 AM |
Natalie was still alive so obviously Bob Redford didn't think so.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 25, 2022 5:01 AM |
Splendour In The Grass is not a fine film. It’s completely bonkers and incoherent.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 25, 2022 5:09 AM |
Splendor in the Grass was her best role. I would say she should have won the Oscar for that but I wouldn't take the Oscar away from Sophia Loren in Two Women.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 25, 2022 5:51 AM |
Shirley was class of 1952 in high school so the 1934 birthdate checks out.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 25, 2022 5:56 AM |
She wasn't Oscar worthy. She was cute and sometimes pretty.
She looked frightened, needy and a bit hungry in all of her roles. That was just used to good effect in Splendour.
Not the same thing as acting.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 25, 2022 6:11 AM |
Only if she could use it as a life preserver, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 25, 2022 6:19 AM |
She should have won for Meteor (1979). LOL!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 25, 2022 6:39 AM |
If Candice Bergen eventually managed to carry a sit-com, I think Natalie could have done the same.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 25, 2022 6:48 AM |
People keep saying Natalie had no talent, but you don't become a star without talent. As Joan said, you can't manufacture stars.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 25, 2022 6:58 AM |
She was scheduled to do an LA stage production of Anastasia when she died. Maybe if it had moved to Broadway she would have gotten a Tony. Lots of ad images available on a google image search.

Natalie was heavily advertised to appear in Anastasia in LA. The pics are out there,

So is Natalie's killer!
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 25, 2022 7:15 AM |
What's with so many people saying "Natalie would never have won an Oscar because she wasn't a good actress"?
Have any of you ever actually seen who wins those things? They almost never reward exceptionally good performances or even exceptionally good actors.
She might or might not have ever won an Oscar had she lived longer, but if not, it wouldn't have been because of a lack of acting ability. That's no impediment.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 25, 2022 8:14 AM |
She was blackballed. What was she going to say in her Oscar acceptance speech? " I'd like to thank Kirk Douglas for giving me the big one"...
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 25, 2022 8:20 AM |
She was pretty good in "The Cracker Factory". She definitely was on track for tv movie stardom. Candace Bergen turned out to have a flair for comedy. Wood didn't.
