Joshua Bassett Heart Failure
In a new interview with People, Joshua Bassett says he suffered heart failure shortly after the release of his song “Lie Lie Lie” in 2021.
Bassett told People that, after experiencing public hate following the release of Olivia Rodrigo's “Driver's License” (a song rumored to be about the pair's breakup, though neither of them has confirmed they were ever in a relationship), he underwent a lot of stress and eventually started feeling ill.
"I was sleeping 16 to 20 hours a day," he said. "I couldn't even stand up for longer than 30 seconds."
His song was released six days after Rodrigo's, and shortly after that, he asked to be taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with septic shock. People reports Bassett was experiencing heart failure.
"I felt my heart literally failing," he said. "I was like, 'This isn't just anxiety. This is bad.'"
At the time of his illness, Bassett told fans he underwent surgery, but didn't say what for. "Welp... not the first place I assumed I’d be on my 'Lie Lie Lie' release day... the ER!!" he wrote on Instagram. "After multiple, very very ugly days and nights, I had no choice today but be taken to the hospital."
Bassett told People that doctors said his condition may have been related to stress, and that if he hadn't gone to the hospital he may have died. After nine days in the hospital, Bassett had physically recovered, but was still dealing with panic attacks and depression. Now, more than a year latter, Bassett seems to be in a better place. He's taking time for himself, and focusing on helping others find peace.

He's way too young for his heart to be damaged by stress unless he was born with a heart defect. Working in a cardiac ward, the only time I saw young people with heart problems was because of drug use. Cocaine was the most popular cause at the time. It was sad to see someone barely 25 walking like an old man out of breath.

There's definitely a Joshua Bassett obsessed troll on DL these days, following in the footsteps of Janbot . At least janet jackson had some talent and recognition. Hardly anyone here knows who he is or cares about these stupid stories.

R5, I’m the OP but I thought you all would appreciate the article because I’ve only heard about him on the DL. I barely know who he is.

Does he still identify as queer? Or is he bi now? He is obviously bi as he has admitted to relationships/sex with men and women. I have no idea why he doesn't just say bi, or even pan (if he wants to be inclusive). Queer is a slur. I hate people using it.

R4 Maybe the child abuse led to drug issues? He has admitted to being groped as a child and then again as a teenager. Not sure the relationship as a teenager counts though. He was old enough to know what he was doing. It was more like grooming by the older teenager than child sex abuse. It's like he wanted it and enjoyed it then got cold feet. Maybe there was a power dynamic there that wasn't healthy and maybe he was groomed by the older guy, but again... he was a teenager. Not a child. He knew what he was doing. It wasn't child abuse. Sounds more like he is suffering from internalized homophobia. Years from know, after thousands of therapy hours he will identify as gay. Just like George Shelley identifying as bi then gay, same with Tom Daley. There's a reason people say bi now gay later. Yes, some stay bisexual throughout their lives, but many use it as a stepping stone. There is nothing wrong with either.
