Why is Schumer such a do nothing? One gets the impression the dems slow walk everything because they don't want any real justice as they want to stay in power and not be thrown out with the dirty bath water. They would need to pressure Thomas to resign and given the current state of things--they can taste a Roe overthrow--unlikely to happen.
As for Thomas-- IIRC, it was Kurt Anderson who said that his parents were pretty hardcore conservative Republicans but there was another family in town who were so right wing that his parents and the other GOPers stayed away from them because they thought they were bonkers -- those people were, of course, Ginni Thomas's parents.

Here's an interesting decision in which Clarence didn't recuse himself-
[quote] "The Supreme Court voted 8-1 that Trump couldn't block the Jan 6th committee from getting docs. The one vote against was Clarence Thomas. Mark Meadows turned over texts from Thomas's wife Ginni Thomas urging efforts to overturn the election. What else was afraid would come out?"
Datalounge fav, Mark Joseph Stern, is shocked.
[quote] "Ginni Thomas urged Mark Meadows to overturn the 2020 election by any means necessary—while her husband was ruling on cases attempting to overturn the election. A truly extraordinary level of corruption," he wrote. "Look at the absolutely deranged conspiracy theories Ginni Thomas pushed. Fringe doesn't begin to cover it. She promoted conspiracy theories from a Sandy Hook truther plus QAnon stuff."
Add this to "things that will not happen":
[quote ] Election law lawyer Rick Hasen described it as "astounding" and political scientist Norman Ornstein responded, "Clarence Thomas should resign."

Supreme Court Justices have very little (maybe even no) limits on their participation in cases. All recusals are voluntary. Even if Thomas knew he was ruling directly on a matter that could send his wife to jail, there would be no way other than public pressure to get him to recuse. So there’s not a good hook to get him tossed off the Court—he would have to choose to resign.
One of the many changes that should come about because of this is a code of ethics for SC Justices. No more “we’re too pure to need rules.”

That appeared to be the theme of Justice Roberts's most recent New Year's Eve report on the federal judiciary.
[quote] Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts said the nation's federal courts are doing a better job of policing themselves, which he called essential for the ability of the judicial branch to maintain its independence.
This recent failure to recuse incident has to be an embarrassment to Roberts. It completely undermines what he said in the report, and not about a trivial matter, either. It's about Supreme Court cases regarding the legitimacy of the United States Presidential elections. Just that.

You guys….this story makes me so sad. I truly thought that SCOTUS was somehow not this bad, even though I knew I was lying to myself. This is really bad. And if we now get to see in slow motion them doing absolutely nothing to stop this (yet again), I don’t know how to cope anymore. How does a human being cope with not believing in their government anymore? I should go talk to the Russians. I just never dreamt that our entire government could be this pathetic and this shitty. This is mere inches from Third World bullshit.
We need to do something. March? Phone calls? What do we do? It feels like we have two immediate problems, one is Garland, the other is Thomas/Roberts. I have absolutely no idea how Roberts would response to massive civil demonstrations demanding transparency of the entire SCOTUS — now I want to know who else in that building was talking to Trump people, and what role did they play on hearing related to Ian. 6th? I want the entire court looked at, and every one else in that building, they need to all be investigated for ties to Trump, lobbyists, and most importantly, Putin!!! They need to literally root out each and every single person who was involved and simply publicly named them if they refuse to resign.
I bet my sweet tits that Ginni gets money from Putin. Like I’ll be surprised if that doesn’t eventually come out.

I just don’t understand how this was overlooked by our founders….weren’t they afraid of this at all? Surely they had witnessed that type of corruption in Europe (or knew of it).
One other comment. I wasn’t necessarily taken aback by the level of crazy in those texts. I think what freaked me out more is that they both seem to truly believe in their cause — they are the heroes in their minds!!! You can’t change someone like that! It’s not that they can’t change, it’s that they won’t. Ginni actually believes that her cause is just. It is totally twisted.

Don't blame the founders for the Dems not giving the Right Wing the vicious bitch slapping they deserve.
You can be reasonable and highlight that you are on your own, because your opposition has gone to the dark side of racism and corruption. No more "we must be better, we must reach across the isle!" bullshit. No more pretty please. Use social media, use the media to fuck with the bullies. Let them cry and whine, put them in a defensive position and get shit done. Like pushing through that Supreme Court nominee.

No, the Kraken was an 18th century imaginary sea monster. But no doubt the Republicans got it from 'Clash of the Titans'. Hence the line, "Release the Kraken."
[quote]R24: Who in the fuck are the kraken??
The "Kraken" was code for Sidney Powell and the wacky-assed bullshit she was supposed to bring to the Trump effort to keep the presidency (you know, the claim that there was a computer server in Germany with all the proof of votes altered from Trump to Biden, and that Gina Haspel was also there, mortally injured, who needed rescuing/arrest as a traitor, and Sidney Powell demanded to be given command of a SEAL team to go recover the server and capture Haspel).
The "Kraken" fizzled out as the laughingstock that it was.

There's no more filibuster for judicial nominees going through Senate confirmation. Harry Reid ended it for non-SCOTUS federal judges because Moscow Mitch was summarily blocking anything from the Obama WH. Mitch ended it for SCOTUS justices after the Senate Dems filibustered Gorsuch.
So it's full steam ahead should Thomas kick the bucket. That's provided the Rethugs don't concoct some Weekend at Bernie's scenario with Thomas 'in hospital' or 'recuperating' for months till the midterms.

ginni thomas will not be prosecuted, clarence will not be thrown off the bench or in any type of trouble and michael flynn's brother, who delayed sending help to the capitol for hours on January 6th, will not get into any trouble. He's still in the military and will allowed to retire with a full pension, just like clarence thomas will
This is democratic weakness and laziness. This is how "it" happens, one side lays down and allows it to happen. They just don't give a single fuck.
the republicans are evil. The democrats are useless.
The democrats don't deserve any votes, but they seriously are the lesser of two evils.

The way they elevate Trumpism to a sacred cause is absurd. Beyond racist animosity and authoritarian tendencies, there really is no coherence to his positions. On issues that don’t directly touch on race and his self interest, it’s usually difficult to know what positon he would take in advance. Is he consistently for a free market? Not at all. Does he support law and order? Only very selectively? Can you predict what foreign policies he will make? Other than a weakness for dictators, not really. It’s all just a jumble of class identifications and shared animosities, that, because it makes them feel good, they turn into a sacred crusade for which they are willing to sacrifice democratic principles.

Make their messaging stronger...call out everything that has been done by the GOP that is still continuing. Point out how lowly these bastards are (maybe not in those exact words)...instead of just mamby-pamby finger pointing and taking the high road. Get really serious about making these people accountable...although time is running out, November is on the horizon. Get a bit of a street fighter in them. This is a street fight by the GOP...as dirty as they can get, but Democrats think they are on a debating team. This is absolutely ridiculous and dangerous. There is no more working across the aisle and bipartisanship anymore. Maybe some day it will return. Right now, the situation is very different. They should have adjusted accordingly if they were serious. I think they were never serious...just optics. It doesn't fool me anymore. I am disgusted and feel very let down by Democrats. Yeah...lesser of two evils, but voting is going to be harder for me.

[quote] The rhetoric from the Christian right about Trump has long sounded very much like that exchange between Meadows and Thomas. In a piece tracing that rhetoric, Posner concludes that for many on the Christian right, Trump was “anointed” by God as “the fulfillment of a long-sought goal of restoring the United States as a Christian nation.”
[quote] In this narrative, Trump — despite his glaring and repugnant personal imperfections — became the vessel to carry out the struggle to defeat various godless and secularist infestations of the idealized Christian nation, from the woke to globalists to communists to the “deep state.”
[...]
[quote] Christian nationalism has at different times focused on varying enemies of its vision of a Christian nation. But the through line here is that multidenominational, multiracial democracy is producing a country that is unacceptable to the Christian nationalist vision, Jones notes. Which is why reckoning with the role of this movement in the turn against democracy is important. “It is a violent reclamation movement,” Jones told me. “If we’re going to move into the promise of a multireligious, multiethnic democracy, these forces are going to have to be confronted.”

May I add, R217, that it seems to be part of the problem is that we now have so many different levels of exposure to information.
Today, FUX has not mentioned Ginni at all but brought up Hunter nine times. Subsequently. people who only watch that network are clueless about one and infuriated that more people don't understand the urgency of the latter.
Add to that the addiction to clout chasing via upvotes/likes/shares on social media and people become obsessed with being contrarian, edgy, or just plain wrong.

[quote]"We have no comment on my statements to overthrow the government"==========>>If she were in China or Russia Ginny would be sitting in a prison cell....I cannot believe people stormed the capital and are serving weeks in prison instead of years...
She actually organized and financed the transportation for many of the insurrectionists. She should be arrested for conspiracy. That's an easy charge to prosecute. Her texts prove it and so do her bank records. This was public knowledge two weeks after the insurrection. People were tweeting all about this. This is not new information.
the dems knew this and let clarence thomas cast a vote on a case about the insurrection.
The dems should be charged with not doing their jobs and allowing other politicians/judges to violate the constitution. That useless piece of shit merrick garland doesn't care. He ought to be tossed out on his useless ass.

[quote] 17 Democratic Senators by my count are 70+ years old. What are they afraid to lose in their old and very well paid age?
US senator is one of the greatest jobs in the world. They barely work at all & they get huge respect. They have govt-paid staffs, they have eager unpaid interns, they have a motorcade (not as big as a president or VP, but its got SUVs & flashing lights). They get the best tables in restaurants. They have industry lobbyists giving all kinds of baksheesh. They have insider information and can easily make a fortune on it. They can make family members rich with their info. Their children get admitted to the best schools. Everybody wants to please the senator because the senator makes the laws of the land. A senator can give you a reference for a military academy, a university, a job. Your spouse or children can work as lobbyists. Corporations, foreign leaders …all want to have regulations removed, foreign policies written, sanctions removed. You don’t want to make a senator angry. They know people.
The Hatch Act is no longer enforced. Senators no longer obey subpoenas. They don’t testify. They can be outwardly racist, bigoted and it doesn’t matter. The6 won’t lose their jobs. In fact, it’s kind of better for their job to be openly bigoted in some states.
There are only 100 senators in a country of over 300 million people. Nobody wants to give up that kind of power. And they only have to run every 6 years.

There is not a single black person in the entire US who has a photo of Clarence Thomas in their home. They know he doesn't represent them and is in fact an anathema to black movement and civil rights in general. He was a conservative ringer placed by Bush I to satisfy the need to have a black person on the court, but who's views are the polar opposite.
However, thousands of homes had photos of the first black supreme court judge, Thurgood Marshall, a man of high moral standing. I recall one hanging on the wall in the office of my college professor.

This is the irony of those right-wing dirtbags who speak of token picks and affirmative action. They always accuse the Democrats of token picks, meanwhile, they picked an unqualified bag of pageant hair named Palin solely because she was a woman. They thought her simply being female, was enough to get women to vote for them. She was a complete imbecile who had no business having any power. Another crazy Ginni moment from the past. She went to the Trump Whitehouse, met with the president, and went on a rant about Trans people (and other things.)
[quote] In January 2019, Ginni Thomas met with Trump at the White House alongside members of her conservative group, Groundswell. A Trump aide who spoke with the magazine described the conversation in unflattering terms.
[quote] "It was the craziest meeting I've ever been to," he told the magazine. "She started by leading the prayer."
[quote] Later, the aide said, attendees spoke disparagingly of "the transsexual agenda" and of parents "chopping off their children's breasts."
[quote] The aide said that Trump "tried to rein it in" but that "it was hard to hear" because attendees were praying out loud.
[quote] Some details of the White House meeting later leaked, and Ginni Thomas' advocacy against transgender rights — and the inflammatory language she's used to describe transgender Americans — made headlines.
You know you are seriously crazy if even Trump feels the need to rein you in.

I think it's interesting that the Trumpies of all people, are putting stories out there about Ginni, about how crazy she is, she's a Q-Anoner, all that. It's almost as if someone decided that they're going to throw her under the bus for 1/6, knowing that as long as Clarence is alive she's largely untouchable, but once he's dead - well, then fuck her. She's no use to them anymore anyway. As someone else noted, the texts themselves may not be actionable, but if this is the stuff she does in public, imagine the crazy shit she does that she thinks is private. It's the frog in the boiling pot situation--we've little by little over the last 5-6 years been conditioned into thinking any of this QAnon/MAGA behavior is normal or acceptable. It is not, but thanks anyway Chuck Todd, Maggie Haberman, and the rest for normalizing it.

Agree r312, and I totally get the frustration of that poster (posters?) about how passive both Merrick Garland and the Democrats can be. Stop that shit. No matter what the committee does or doesn't do, no matter what Kinzinger or Liz Cheney want or don't want, every Democrat on every show should be talking about treason in the Clarence Thomas household and asking how a Supreme Court Justice can be married to a coup supporting lunatic, and wondering if he supports the coup as well.

We lost the culture wars in 2000. I was watching ejection results when Florida was called for Gore & he was declared winner. It was BUSH’S COUSIN who declared the election was wrong and that Bush really won. Network news them iimmmediately switched over to a feed from FL where George 1 & Barbara Bush declared this was all wrong, Florida did not go for Gore. Of course, their son JEB was governor of FL.
Nobody though that was suspicious. Why? Because of cable news. We no longer had 3 networks and some independent broadcast stations giving the news. We now had cable stations that were not subjected to FCC regulations. Cable news gleefully accepted this “breaking news” ratings grabber they knew would last for months, just like coverage of whitewater & Gulf War 1 did.
That’s when it all came together. Gulf War 1, Whitewater, astronaut catastrophes, OKC bombings, Columbine had hypnotized the US and addicted it to cable news. They sat on their asses while James Baker spewed garbage. That’s when we lost.
Obama was a figurehead.

The win in VA was in no way some shocker. The fucking media made it sound as if it were. In fact. it's exactly what VA does every time there's an election for governor. The shock would've been if McAulliffe had won and then the media would've treated it like no big deal that something that normally never happens happened.
Second, the pop. of VA is 8.5M. Youngkin got 1.663M. Mcauliffe got 1.6M. Roughly 63K people in a state of 8.5M is why Youngkin is governor, so do me a favor and stop pretending there's some groundswell of support for the right-wing BARKING, because the actual votes do not reflect that fact.

[quote]In the 1980s, while a congressional aide, Thomas took training with the self-awareness program Lifespring.[52] In 1987, she related to The Washington Post that, during her training several years earlier, she had been "confused and troubled" by lessons such as one where trainees were told to disrobe to bikinis and bathing suits then "made fun of fat people's bodies and ridiculed one another with sexual questions".[52] After realizing that membership in her Lifespring group was separating her from her family, friends, and co-workers, Thomas began what proved to be a difficult and months-long process of breaking away.[52] At one point, she hid in another part of the U.S. to avoid a constant barrage of high-pressure phone calls from Lifespring members, who felt they had a duty to keep her in the organization.[8][53][54]
[quote]Thomas came to believe that Lifespring was a cult.[8] After leaving the group in 1985, she sought counseling and joined the Cult Awareness Network.[8][55] She became a critic of controversial religious groups, speaking on panels and organizing anti-cult workshops for congressional staffers in 1986 and 1988.[8] In a 1991 interview, Thomas remarked, "I was once in a group that used mind control techniques"; and she called its members "pretty scary people".[56]
Nearly forty years later, she's in yet another cult of "pretty scary people".

Well THIS could be a win, and this is the difference with the Republicans, who can sense immediately when there is blood in the water and start swarming. I don't need Corrie Booker talking about the need for an ethics code for the Supreme Court. That "procedural" horseshit that the Democratic Party always seems to think people actually care about.
What we need is the same kind of energy that was used to create CRT as a nationwide problem, and trannies in sports as the most important issue of the decade, and before that Benghazi, and so on and so on and so on. Republicans have a real instinct for this and we should develop that instinct.
We need Democrats out there asking loudly if a Supreme Court Justice's wife doesn't believe in the Constitution itself, and if that Justice agrees with her that it's just a piece of paper that should be thrown away the second a Republican President loses an election.
by Anonymous | reply 334 | March 27, 2022 7:58 PM |
No, R18, she is not. Anyone assuming she is stupid is mistaken. She was involved in Republican politics in high school and has remained hard core. She understands about messaging and is considered a serious conservative by other serious conservatives, who believe the ends justify the means. She has been involved in a lot of strategic activity and understands how to bring down the government. She doesn't believe the GQP stuff any more than you do, but she understands that riling up the Magats can bring a lot of power. And, as the wife of a SCOTUS justice, she is unlikely to ever face a charge or a consequence, even after his death.
She should be held responsible for her actions as should the rest of these criminals and seditionists. If Liz Cheney is backing of a subpoena for her, however, then no other body will be taking action either.
by Anonymous | reply 335 | March 27, 2022 7:59 PM |
And we have to stop doing that too. We need to stop being so hyperlegalistic about everything. We need to stop pretending that everything comes down to subpoenas and courts and proving beyond a shadow of a doubt before a jury of blah, blah, blah.
No, that is not how politics works. It is visceral, and we have a visceral issue here. Is there a Supreme Court Justice who believes that a coup against a lawfully elected president is legitimate, and if so, why the hell is he still on the Court?
by Anonymous | reply 336 | March 27, 2022 8:11 PM |

Same as with My Lai apologist and 9/11 perjurer Colin Powell. Rehabbed in the public's eye, praised by Democrats.

Arranging for transportation to take people to the capital where they have plans to try and overthrow the government is a crime.
Had the situations been reversed, every democratic politician and anyone else involved would have been taken to Guantanamo Bay. The Patriot Act would allow it too. And more importantly, ginni thomas even mentions having Biden sent there, for "stealing the election".
And shame on the weak, lazy democrats for not doing anything. This is how a civil starts. You have one evil party and one useless party who refuses to lift a finger. They've known all of this and were totally cool with clarence thomas casting votes on a case dealing with the insurrection.
What the fuck can you say about a party who can't even be bothered to get rid of the people obstructing them at every turn?
The dems are the real problem. Yes, the repugs are scum, but they only do the things they do because they know that there are no consequences for anything they do. donald trump could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and the democrats would refuse to prosecute him.

As mentioned in numerous other threads: It will take ~50+ years for Dems to correct what Cheeto did in 4 short years. And yes, in part it is because they are lazy and seek every opportunity to take a vacation. The DUMS will appoint endless tax-payer funded committees and endless investigations along with any number of grand jury hearings for years that simply fizzle away after months with hardly a footnote in the news since the news media suffers from such an acutely short attention span. Just like how Bragg and Dump’s NY criminal grand jury investigation ends up with only shocking resignations and NOT A SINGLE indictment being brought against Cheetolino despite an overwhelming amount of guilty evidence.
This is a complete breakdown in our system of checks and balances because of the sheer amount of CORRUPTION in every corner of our government and its officials. Everyone has kompromat on everyone else, regardless of party affiliation. I’ll bet there’s dirt out there in that NY investigation. And I’d bet it could be something as despicable as child diddling with a connection to Jeffrey Epstein. That hot potato seems to have long tentacles into a lot of power brokers in NYC. That would alone would substantiate why Epstein was made to “strangle himself”.

Roberts’ SCOTUS=Yes, let’s vote in favor of allowing hostile countries to fund US campaigns. After all, campaign funding is a form of free speech.
Roberts’ SCOTUS=Yes, let’s gut the Voting Rights Act because it’s anachronistic since we elected a black President. There’s no such thing as gerrymandering to suppress minority votes. How else can we justify the election of a black US President.

Let’s go on a limb and put forth the premise that he is strongly in favor of an individual state’s rights - that there is little need for much Federal legal oversight. Then why do we need to uphold our very Constitution. To hell with it. It’s just a piece of paper after all. Then why not allow any state to allow the lynching of blacks or paying them less for their work. If you happen to be black (or any minority for that matter) just move to a more liberal state. Where does it all end?
This poses a serious threat to the foundations of our country because it undermines our Constitution and it undermines our very democracy. And John Roberts’ has a lot to do with where we are today both in our own country and his warped rulings to strike down the very protections against the rise of an autocracy such as Russia which we know interfered in the 2016 Presidential election.

The Supreme Court has a dominant, arch-conservative Catholic wing. They rule by religious dogma, not civil law.

Why has no atheist organization pushed through a suit to assert the right of the nonreligious to be free of religious dogma in the public sphere, including schools, healthcare, the courts and the laws of the land?
Doesn't it stem from the 1A which says the state cannot establish a religion?
by Anonymous | reply 405 | March 29, 2022 4:56 PM |
The Supreme Court will absolutely throw it to the states to decide. They’ll wash their hands of it and deplorable states like Mississippi will ban abortions outright and impose the death penalty on women who seek one. And I’m not joking about the death penalty.
by Anonymous | reply 406 | March 29, 2022 5:03 PM |
That as much is clear in our Constitution. SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. Our founding fathers knew the dangers once these religious zealots start to impose their religious values on the people. They expressly forbid this crossover, but these fucking CONS don’t care about the Constitution once it gets in the way of forcing their religious values on the rest of us. Our founding fathers knew this shit was going to happen! The utter irony is that these so called pious people love to condone gun violence, fascism, pure contempt of the less fortunate and love the subjugation of women. In essence, everything the Bible and Jesus himself preached and taught in their pursuit of white (male) supremacy. I.e. The Federalist Society of white supremacy, Heil Hitler!

They’ll throw a lot more back to the states. Any and all hard-earned federal civil rights will be thrown back to the states. Let these deplorable states decide free speech, freedom of the press, freedom of peaceful protest and assembly, etc. No equal protection. Each state can determine equal protection, so goodbye to gay rights in these Con states….nullify same sex marriages in these states, etc. etc….

Do you honestly believe if shit states like KY and MS actually had $, they'd be sending it to NY and CA if the shoe were on the other foot?
by Anonymous | reply 412 | March 29, 2022 5:27 PM |
Then the states should also be able to decide gun legislation. If California wants to ban assault weapons, have a 39 day wait and background check to buy a gun the SCOTUS should fuck right off and GTFO.
Every blue state that wants to restrict assault weapons should be allowed to. And anyone bringing in one from out of state should be arrested and put to death.
It works both ways, assholes.

Does he agree with his crazy ass treasonous bitch of a wife? How much is he personally involved with her crazy ass behavior and views? We should not be having quiet little discussions with Liz Cheney about whether or not to subpoena her or trying to divert everything into a little discussion about a Supreme Court Code of Ethics. We should set aside the Democratic Party dream of making everything about rules of conduct and procedural questions.
We should be asking loudly whether Ginni is the only crazy one in the family or if Thomas has also rejected the Constitution of the United States and believes in installing a Republican President by force.

by Anonymous | reply 426 | March 29, 2022 7:32 PM |
Thinking this shit starts in Mississippi and others follow is very sterotypic and not that simplistic. Yes, Mississippi has an abortion ban effort before the Supreme Court, but it follows Texas' successful initiative before that. Florida, Alabama, Tennessee,Missouri, Wisconsin, Indiana, and others are trying similar. Republican legislators in some states are only stopped by Democratic Governors' veto power. The Democratic Party wrote off the south starting in the late sixties. What was left, fell upon mostly black people with poor funding, dismal organizational efforts, and the lack of support nationally. Big mistake.
by Anonymous | reply 427 | March 29, 2022 11:47 PM |
Well yes, it's silly to blame it all on Mississippi, and I don't think anyone really does. It's just that Mississippi and Alabama are two of the most extremist, fundamentalist, Christianist states, so anything shitty and stupid can generally find a home there if it can be linked to the Bible. And Democrats didn't just start writing off the South in the 1960s. They started becoming the party of black civil rights, and white Southerners reacted in shock and horror and hatred, and ultimately switched their allegiance to the Republican Party, which gradually became the party of racism and Bible based bullshit.
by Anonymous | reply 428 | March 29, 2022 11:58 PM |
R425 what are you talking about? The slap is a cultural thing—everyone is talking about it in the gossip world. But no one on the Dem side is letting this go.
by Anonymous | reply 429 | March 30, 2022 12:03 AM |
R427, as R428 correctly notes, the Democratic Party did not "write off" the South. It became the party of "black civil rights" only because it . . . believed in civil rights. I suppose the alternative would have been to soullessly support segregation, sexism and homophobia.
by Anonymous | reply 430 | March 30, 2022 1:00 AM |
Scumbag Strom Thurmond who raped his teenage black maid was a Democrat up until civil rights. Fuck the GOP and fuck anyone who tries to defend the South. I'm sorry to the few, white Dems who exist there now, but most of that region is just full of aggressively stupid, racist, white people who can't get over their prejudices. Trump offers them NOTHING but a stroke to the ego which does nothing for their incomes or their lives.

It seems every time we have these scumbags on the ropes, NDP will forgive them or take harsh measure against them off the table. WHY?? It’s not up to her. Why does she feel the need to open her mouth almost as if to preclude an inclusive discussion. She’s always trying to play nice when these Pukes kick us in the balls every time. Can’t she at least keep her mealy mouth shut for once. Nobody asked her.
by Anonymous | reply 432 | March 30, 2022 8:45 AM |

You know, the real question is why aren’t the Supreme Court justices held to high ethical standards? Is there some benefit that they make better decisions having no sense of what is or what is not ethical? If so, where has this been studied and published. Also, if this doesn’t feel right to your average American, than it’s up to Congress todo their job and change it so they must be next to impeccable. I mean, even MDs are required to take classes in medical ethics.
How can we really trust these powerful justices that do not need a sense of ethics or engage themselves in less than high ethical behavior? The highest court in the United States.
MARY!
by Anonymous | reply 434 | March 30, 2022 9:01 AM |
Put pressure on Roberts and the other justices. Label them corrupt. The court has become so politicized, ethics has gone.
by Anonymous | reply 435 | March 30, 2022 10:16 AM |
It would probably take a constitutional amendment to change anything major about the Supreme Court, sadly. The idea was that appointing the justices for life would somehow put them above the political fray. And, just like the Presidency, there were unwritten protocols to which the justices would adhere that, in modern times, have gone down the toilet.
You know what I always say: keep your passport handy.
by Anonymous | reply 436 | March 30, 2022 11:34 AM |
R435. How, exactly? Many of us assumed that these judges act at the highest of standards and are beyond reproach. We now learn they are can be highly partisan and need not answer to anyone once they are seated. Thanks to NDP, we now have learned that they must be so special that they need not know how or if behave ethically.
by Anonymous | reply 437 | March 30, 2022 11:36 AM |
Let’s remind everyone that John Roberts has been undermining our democracy for decades now. Look at his Citizens United ruling! Look at his reversal on the Voters Rights Act. Look at how he has refused to intervene in Texas’ anti-abortion legislation. He’s done this and more! All while staying under the radar of our attention- deficit MSN media. Next up - overturning Roe v. Wade. Well not so much overturning it, but nonetheless placing strict time limits on when a woman can legally get an abortion before these CONS deem it’s “too late” for an abortion.
You know, the likes of (rapist/beer loving) Kavanaugh and anti-abortion cultist Amy Commee Barrett comfort themselves each night by reciting semantics that they would never “overturn” Roe v Wade - however they can assert as much while simultaneously placing draconian restrictions on the time limits on when a woman can legally have an abortion. It could be 16 weeks - or a single fucking day - or whatever these religious zealots hearts’ desire.
They conveniently forget that the US Constitution itself states implicitly that there be a SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE!!! The Constitution forbids using one’s religious beliefs to restrict the freedom of choice for the American citizen. This is the very embodiment of hypocrisy, partisanship and corruption that has overtaken every corner of our democracy and these CONservatives.

And honestly that matters to them r435. They have been feeling that and running around giving speeches about how we are too nonpartisan, dammit. They know they are slipping into being just another hyperpartisan institution and they can't ultimately afford that. It is a social contract: we agree to respect their decisions as the ultimate authority, and they agree not to be just another partisan gang. If they drop their end of the bargain, bad things can follow, like people on the ground ignoring court decisions. In the harsh words of Andrew Jackson: The Court has decided, now let them enforce it if they can.
by Anonymous | reply 442 | March 30, 2022 1:30 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 445 | March 30, 2022 2:03 PM |
But that's exactly the problem, r445. The law then becomes a purely partisan endeavor, where Republican Governors say yes to it and Democrats say no, or vice versa, and everything gets chaotic. I do not want that world, and that is why I want to see a hard push against Clarence Thomas, because it looks like he and his wife have given up on the Constitution altogether and just want to ensure Republican presidents. His wife definitely. I need to know if he agrees with her, and everyone needs to be asking that. It goes well beyond recusal. If he can't be trusted on elections, he needs to resign.

Ginni Thomas is a woman who has sought answers, certainty, God, and salvation.
From younger days Ginni has had a cult-member mentality, and in her later years believes she has found solace and certainty within the Republican version of Christianity and morality. The Far-Right Wing of the Republican Party is her grown-up cult.
Marriage to one of the 9 Justices who rule on our laws, that is, to a man whose decisions help determine the certainty Ginni needs deep in her psyche, is the cherry atop her Manichean world-view of Good vs. Evil.
Hers is the mind-set that accepts that the ends justify using any and all means---legal, ethical, moral, or not---to defeat the minions of evil, be they Democrats, immigrants, gays, etc.
Obamacare? Satan. Anti-Trump? Beelzebub. Social Security checks? From the Third Circle of Hell. It's all EVIL!
