‘Spring Breakers’ (2013) is 9 Years Old!!!

Wtf?! Time is moving far too fast. I remember watching this movie in theaters and finding it to be the most bizarre, surreal, intoxicating and interesting. The film had some of the most beautiful cinematography from that year, and should have been nominated for an Oscar in that category.

The film is a surreal experience, bordering on unrealistic and euphoric situations and atmosphere. However, I liked it. It was FUN, and James Franco gives a great performance. He is a highlight in this movie.

The music adds a huge element to the movie, also. It was shocking seeing Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez in a movie like this at the time, and Emma Roberts was originally supposed to play Ashley Benson’s role before dropping out.

It was made for $5 million and grossed $31 million. So it was a success.

Did you enjoy it at all?

I wonder whatever happened to The ATL Twins

by Anonymousreply 1March 23, 2022 10:10 PM

Spring Break forever, bitches!

by Anonymousreply 2March 23, 2022 10:15 PM

Are you a woman, OP?

by Anonymousreply 3March 23, 2022 10:18 PM

I think I started watching this years ago but forgot to finish it.

by Anonymousreply 4March 23, 2022 10:21 PM

I've had this film in my library for years but never watched it...it just seemed like a movie for straight morons. I will give it a try for you, OP. WIll report back.

by Anonymousreply 5March 23, 2022 10:23 PM

I enjoyed it quite a bit. I watched it in the middle of the night without expecting anything and yes, it's intoxicating.

by Anonymousreply 6March 23, 2022 10:24 PM

Is 9 year some special anniversary. OR JUST A BULLSHIT PRETENSE YOU PULLED OUT OF YOUR ASS to try and fail to make your opening gambit of this thread, about a shitty movie nobody thinks about, somehow less shitty.

by Anonymousreply 7March 23, 2022 10:24 PM

R7 I saw it was released March 22, 2013 and that’s when I started thinking about how it’s already been 9 years. Time is moving fast.

by Anonymousreply 8March 23, 2022 10:29 PM

R3 funny you ask that as the film had a low rating score with women but high one with men.

by Anonymousreply 9March 23, 2022 10:29 PM

This is all I know about that film.

R10 that’s def the most remembered thing besides them singing Britney around a piano before they go rob and beat people.

These people are insufferable and I haven't even gotten to the parts with James Franco. I now think I understand the 38& rotten score. OP, what are your other favorite movies?

by Anonymousreply 12March 23, 2022 10:44 PM

R12 People hate it because it’s surreal.

by Anonymousreply 13March 23, 2022 10:49 PM

Saw this my junior year of high school. I wrote for the school newspaper and told my mom I wanted to see it so I could review it (but really I wanted to watch it for myself) but it was only playing in a theatre 30 minutes from where I lived. I saw it with my mom and my brother that was a year younger than me, and the only other people in the theatre were two teenage girls… and an elderly couple! My mom said they must have known someone in the movie lol.

It was very 2012/2013 to me, with the soundtrack and the neon… I still love the scene where they are robbing a wedding to the to ”Everytime” by Britney Spears.

by Anonymousreply 14March 23, 2022 10:51 PM

Yes. Most people who saw it were teenage girls who then hated it and gave it bad reviews. They thought it would be a much different movie than it was because it had Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens.

by Anonymousreply 15March 23, 2022 10:53 PM

I love this movie and the work of Harmony Korine, even though people a lot of people find him to be a hack. Gummo is his best though. One of the most unnerving movies I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 16March 23, 2022 10:55 PM

I remember thinking Vanessa was actually pretty good, at least for what the role required. I think people were upset because they assumed Selena Gomez would have had a bigger part when she wasn’t in the movie for very long

by Anonymousreply 17March 23, 2022 10:55 PM

*even though a lot of people.....typing on my iPhone!

by Anonymousreply 18March 23, 2022 10:56 PM

John Waters loved it. A Disney tween exploitation film! Good/bad taste strikes again. It's no Fater Pussycat, Kill! KIll! but surely as absurd.

Korine is kind of a hack but Spring Breakers was really good. It feels like it's more than 9 years old though, 2013 feels like a whole different world than the one we're in now. Between Trump and COVID I feel 25 years older than I did in 2013.

[Quote] It was shocking seeing Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez in a movie like this at the time, and Emma Roberts was originally supposed to play Ashley Benson’s role before dropping out.

Hmm this wasn't Vanessa's first adult movie and i thought she did a good job. But they really did milk Selena's role in this when she's only in it for the first half hour. I'm not sure if Emma would have done a better job than Ashley.

by Anonymousreply 22March 24, 2022 6:12 AM

R22 what adult movie did Vanessa do before 2013?

by Anonymousreply 23March 24, 2022 9:21 AM

R23 HSM ended in 2008 and numerous nudes of Vanessa had already leaked before she did Spring Breakers. Her role was not that shocking. I thought she was good in Sucker Punch.

by Anonymousreply 24March 24, 2022 9:57 AM

Didn't Franco base his character on Kevin Federline?

by Anonymousreply 25March 24, 2022 10:04 AM

So bad. Harmony Korine’s whole ~America, these are your children~ shtick is tired. We know and we don’t care.

by Anonymousreply 26March 24, 2022 1:20 PM

R24 nudes leaking isn’t a movie role. Also, she was 15 in those pics.

by Anonymousreply 27March 24, 2022 1:30 PM

R27 Sucker Punch was mentioned.

by Anonymousreply 28March 25, 2022 3:05 AM

I would have preferred Emma Roberts over Ashley Benson. Benson is more conventionally attractive, but she's such a blank.

by Anonymousreply 29May 26, 2022 5:53 PM

Benson is a better actress.

by Anonymousreply 30May 26, 2022 5:55 PM

It was released around the time I decided I don't want to see gross, repellent movies filled with gross, repellent people.

This decision has caused me to miss out on a lot of movies. But I'm good with it.

by Anonymousreply 31May 26, 2022 5:58 PM

I love this movie. The first time I watched it I expected it to be a piece of shit but I was wrong

by Anonymousreply 32May 26, 2022 7:24 PM

No, I don't understand Harmony Korrine or why he has a career. I did like the scene when Franco gets whacked.

by Anonymousreply 33May 26, 2022 8:01 PM

Harmony Korine is one of those real oddball, pervy filmmakers. You can see it all over this movie (the opening and the dorm hallway scene especially gratuitous). He even admitted in an interview at the time that he and James Franco were fucking with Selena Gomez and playing mind games with her during the poolhall scene. I remember reading a theory online at the time that Korine was testing to see if Selena were a racist by the way she reacted to the black guys playing pool. I think they were real ex-cons.

Emma Roberts dropped out because she didn't want to gain weight and balked at the pool threesome.

According to Vanessa Hudgens, there was real lesbian sex going on during a party scene. She also said she had a bad experience filming that pool threesome with Franco and Benson. She refuses to do any more sex scenes.

That peeing scene was probably real as well.

by Anonymousreply 34May 26, 2022 9:25 PM

R34 and link to them claiming this?

Emma Roberts has never addressed dropping out of the movie or why she did.
