Which actor is LEAST deserving of being a SIR?

It seems like every English actor is a Sir now. Who is the least deserving of the title?

by Anonymousreply 20March 23, 2022 1:50 AM

Paul McCartney.

Sir Bob Geldof is a joke because he's an Irish citizen.

Branagh is such a dim talent, for all his acclaim (and odd staying power). Enormously overrated as an actor and especially as a filmmaker.

I know a lot of you are sentimental towards MONTY PYTHON, but Michael Palin doesn't even possess staying power. He's not even the best and brightest of the Python gang.

by Anonymousreply 3March 22, 2022 9:39 PM

All of them. It’s all BS.

by Anonymousreply 4March 22, 2022 9:40 PM

R3 palin was the one to move on to a different career. The others coasted on monty. Still it’s all bs

by Anonymousreply 5March 22, 2022 9:42 PM

I have occasionally found Mark Rylance annoying as an actor, but I don't question his talent, particularly onstage.

by Anonymousreply 6March 22, 2022 9:43 PM

Mark Rylance got a non-simulated blowjob in a movie. That doesn’t seem very Knightly

by Anonymousreply 7March 22, 2022 9:47 PM

So far Derek Jacobi and Anthony Hopkins have zero votes. They are the two best actors out of the group.

by Anonymousreply 8March 22, 2022 9:51 PM

Michael Gambon always seemed down to Earth and more "blue collar" than his contemporaries.

by Anonymousreply 9March 22, 2022 9:51 PM

“Knighthood”, OP.

Branagh has never been considered a GREAT actor or a movie star, the way Daniel Day Lewis is, but he is recognised as a great filmmaker - without his adaptations of Henry V and Much Ado About Nothing there wouldn't have been Richard III or Romeo & Juliet or 10 Things I Hate About You, he did a great job with Thor and Cinderella. The snobbery directed at him was quite blatant a working class boy FROM BELFAST of all places having the nerve to be ambitious and direct Shakespeare and set up his own production company by the age of 30! Hamlet is a masterpiece. I was so lucky to get to see it in the cinema.

by Anonymousreply 11March 22, 2022 9:59 PM

Branagh has always had a campy way of delivering his lines.

by Anonymousreply 12March 22, 2022 10:20 PM

Kenneth Branagh will always be an arrogant hack to me because of how badly he messed up Orient Express with shitty action sequences, CGI and self-serving character rewrites (Periot is NOT supposed to be an athletic manly man). Take the fucking title away.

by Anonymousreply 13March 22, 2022 10:23 PM

All of 'em, it's just a bunch of phony, elitist bullshit. Give me a break. Let me knight my plumber, thanks for fixing the toilet.

by Anonymousreply 14March 22, 2022 10:32 PM

They're all deserving, in my opinion

by Anonymousreply 15March 22, 2022 10:35 PM

Branagh for how he wrecked Murder on the Orient Express.

Gambon for not reading Harry Potter and ruining Dumbledore (although I like him in other roles. Poor man has dementia now I think).

by Anonymousreply 16March 22, 2022 10:42 PM

I actually had no idea DDL and Rylance have the "Sir" title. I don't think I've ever heard either of them called that before, though would definitely say they're both deserving.

And OP, I'm sure Ben Kingsley would thank you for not including him in your poll.

Maybe it was misread as Lou… in which case… spot on!

by Anonymousreply 18March 22, 2022 10:57 PM

I don't know that Branagh is a "great" filmmaker. Certainly HENRY V, most of HAMLET, and much of MUCH ADO are wonderful, but he has a tendency towards heavy-handedness. And the other two Shakespeare film of his I saw (LOVE'S LABOURS LOST and AS YOU LIKE IT) were awful.

His real genius is for self-promotion.
