I like him but much prefer Jack Klugman.

Who didn't like Walter Matthau?

And he had that great story about being descended from a long line of Russian Orthodox monks.

I avoid his movies.

He makes me sad; he reminds me of how Billy Wilder devolved from making witty important movies down to lame comedies about American schmucks.

I bet Babs wasn't keen on him getting equal billing back in '66.

He had more talent in his smallest fart than I did in my whole body.

By all accounts his wife, the former actress Carol Grace, also had considerable presence. She'd been married to William Saroyan (twice) and was said to be Capote's model for Holly Golightly.

He was very hairy and his wife loved sleeping with him for that reason.

Not the nicest guy. Was said to be particularly brutal to Art Carney in the Broadway production of The Odd Couple.

Did Matthau do much on stage?

He was hilarious. He didn't need lines; he could speak with facial expressions.

He was very big when I was a kid and I remember thinking he was very funny, but when I see him now, I think he was overrated. He can be funny in some things, but he mugs. His acting looks dated and stylized. When I see The Odd Couple now, I think Lemmon is in a whole different league than Matthau as an actor. I still kind of enjoy him (like in The Sunshine Boys), but he rubs me the wrong way, too.

It's sad to think that the divine Ingrid Bergman tried to resuscitate her US career in this lame comedy. She gets secondary billing UNDER the physically-unappealing Matthau and alongside the physically-unappealing Hawn.

Jack Lemmon wasn't ugly. He also wasn't a one-note actor, he had a lot of range and could play all the emotions and moods. (So sod off.)

Jack Lemmon was equally as talented as Don Lemon.
