Samantha Fox- Why was her success so short lived?
I loved the song “Touch Me”, one of the handful of songs that perfectly represents the affects of the 80s and it’s music. I didn’t know she wasn’t American though, until right now.
“Touch Me” peaked at #4 on the Billboard charts in 1986, and then in 1988 “Naughty Girls (Need Love To)” peaked at #3 and “I Wanna Have Some Fun” peaked at #8. That was the end of her hits.
Sad. She was fun.

Because...
a) she followed up "I Wanna Have Some Fun" with a tired remake of the old chestnut "I Only Wanna Be With You", a song everybody and their mother seemed to haul out every few years, and it didn't work.
b) the leadoff single from her next album was one of those "what the fuck are they thinking?" moments. A dead-on-arrival mediocrity with the bizarre title "Hurt Me Hurt Me (But the Pants Stay On)". Seriously? Nobody in America was going to play that shit on the radio. Completely killed her career.
c) at the end of the day, 3 big hits was a pretty good showing for somebody who wasn't much of a singer or performer. She actually did pretty well for someone who wasn't that talented.

R3 makes some very good points. I am a big Samantha Fox fan. I even saw her in concert when she toured the US in 1989. (At Bogart's in Cincinnati, Ohio.)
"I Only Wanna Be With You" was a terrible choice for a follow-up single to "I Wanna Have Some Fun." "Love House" or "Your House or My House" would have been better choices for a second single. Also, releasing "Hurt Me, Hurt Me" as the lead single from her third album was a disastrous choice. Even "More, More, More" would have made more sense.

I think Samantha had a great run from 1986 to 1989. She did a lot better than other female artists, including Kim Wilde who apparently is the most successful female British singer of the '80s.
Her albums, especially I Wanna Have Some Fun, are a collage of the pop sounds of the late '80s. I Wanna Have Some Fun has a bit of hip-hop (the title track), house (Love House), SAW (I Only Wanna Be With You), a bit of rock (Hot for You), unabashed bop (One in a Million, Ready for this Love).
Sam's first three albums are terrific. But her third album, Just One Night, was all over the place and she wasn't able to keep up with the changing trends.

I'm a 45-year-old man who lived through this era. Sam Fox had three top 10 hits plus another top 40 hit. She hit the top 10 more than Kim in the U.S. That is FACT. Love both singers but Samantha had more hits in the US. You seem pressed by Sam's success and that she did better States-wise than Ms. Wilde. No need to be nasty or naughty.

Sam Fox had a good run of his for a model turned singer. Three major US hits and more in other territories.

Aren’t you intelligent or wise enough to just say you like one more than the other than try to try to manipulate history to fit your tastes?
Just say I really like Sam Fox and I liked her somewhat better.
Then stop there. Don’t try to say how many more hits she had or how how she was better received when it’s purely subjective and another poster can say exactly opposite. This is why I hate your posts.

r51, I am only reciting facts. I have no bias against either Fox or Wilde. The Billboard charts clearly show that Fox had more top ten/40 hits than Wilde. Having said that, Wilde had a #1 Hot 100 charting song, something Fox didn't have.
You Came, though, should have been a bigger hit in North America. It's a fantastic song. In fact, I think Close is one of the best albums of the '80s. But then again, there were many British acts that deserved to have bigger success in the States.

Well R3 & R12, in Samantha's defense 60s Pop Remakes were huge in the Late 80s/first few years of the 90s. Just off the top of my head there was Kylie Minogue's 'Locomotion', Cher's 'The Shoop Shoop Song' & Rod Stewart's 'This Old Heart Of Mine'. All remakes & HUGE hits. And I'm sure I'm forgetting several others.

True. Lots of British acts should've been bigger in the US. Unfortunately, US radio was clogged up with hair metal and Lite FM garbage in the late 80s and that took airtime from other artists. The programmers couldn't make enough room in the airplay schedule because they had to play the latest from fucking Warrant or Gloria Estefan.

One could argue that LaToya Jackson decided to take her career cues from Samantha Fox in the late 80s when she did the Playboy spread and hooked up with Fox's Naughty Girls Need Love to and I Wanna Have some Fun producers Full force for the single "You're gonna Get Rocked".

R78, what most people don't realize is that up until 1986 or so, La Toya Jackson's recorded output was actually pretty good. She was never a great singer or had much success but suprisingly she got good productions & material. But the weak material on her (mostly) Full Force-produced 1988 "La Toya Jackson" project & her hilarious attempts at being "tough & urban", pretty much closed the lid on her being considered a serious recording artist here in The States. It's quite apparent that Full Force saved the best material for Samantha Fox.
La Toya fared a little better with the S-A-W produced single '(Ain't Nobody Loves You) Like I Do'. But even that was a blatant ripoff of the group Levert's major R&B hit 'Casanova' from a few years before.

I saw Sam performing at an open air Pride event about 4 years ago. She performed six songs including cover versions of Hot Stuff and Call Me by Blondie. There was no band, just Sam and two twink dancers either side of her. She was obviously miming to the whole thing except for the final track Touch Me. She sang this live to backing tracks, it started off with a new slow intro and then went into the usual song.
My god it was horrendous. Her voice gave out completely, she was croaking along whilst holding her microphone out to the crowd as if they were going to sing along, they didn’t. For at least half of the song there were no vocals at all. When the compère came on after the song Sam whispered something in his ear and he announced that Sam has a sore throat but she didn’t want to cancel the performance. That was complete bullshit, it was actually embarrassing to watch.

In her interview with A Journey Through Stock Aitken Waterman, Fox says her last major label album was sabotaged because her US label, BMG, had decided not to pick up its distribution deal with her UK label, Jive Records, so they had no interest in promoting "Hurt Me Hurt Me" in the US. That effectively killed her mainstream career. And as other have said, she was hardly a failure or a flash in the pan. She had more US top ten hits than Kylie. By any standard she had a very solid (although not stellar) pop career. Most acts don't last as long as she did. Not everyone is Madonna.

The same synth gimmick appeared in multiple songs - in "I Wanna Have Some Fun" and "Naughty Girls." I think people tired of something so shitty, being shoved at them more than once.

She always reminded me of Agnetha from ABBA.
Just looked at her singles discography on Wikipedia. I figured she continued to have hits in the UK after her US hits stopped happening (like Kim Wilde or Belinda Carlisle), but nope. The hits stopped at the same time there, too.
The only song of hers I still listen to is Touch Me…it’s still a jam.

I don't give a flying fuck about taste policing. There is always someone who says they have more refined taste than you. Newsflash: all pop music is by nature low brow. Even the acts that YOU think are high art.

It's the vocals I can't abide. Samantha was better than, say, Paula Abdul but not by much...

Jennifer Lopez is just as thin voiced. Janet Jackson was no Aretha. Paula Abdul was abysmal.

I believe I posted this earlier in the thread, but I saw her on her U.S. tour in 1989 in Cincinnati and really enjoyed the show. Most of the audience were frat bro pigs who kept chanting "tits, tits, tits" throughout the show. If she weren't gay before that tour, it probably turned her against straight men. A couple of guys in the audience were obsessed with trying to get her shirt wet by throwing water with her. She asked them if they were raised in a barn. It was rather funny. But that nonsense aside, I thought it was a completely enjoyable show. I think she even sang a little live here and there, not that that ever mattered at a dance music show. This was of course just before poor Milli Vanilli were crucified for doing what virtually every dance act had been doing for years. But, I digress.... I was a fan back then and still get a kick out of hearing her today. I do agree that releasing the completely bizarre "Hurt Me, Hurt Me" was a huge mistake in America. She should have released the "More, More, More" medley from that album as the first single. Still love ya, Sam! Good luck!

The way I recall it her manager and/or husband robbed her blind. Coupled with the issues with her label she then threw in the towel and moved to Australia
I bought her cd and Paula Abudul's at the same time. Overall I enjoyed Sam's more

Her father, who was her manager, was a cocaine addict who ripped her off. He wouldn't let her oversee her finances. She read an article in a newspaper estimating her worth, and knew the figure was very wrong. She got some accountants in and found out the truth. He had also not been paying her taxes, which left her financially devastated.
