Madonna's most iconic hit is a Janet rip-off

The "Miss you Much" remix in question..

Don't even get me started on when she stole the "let my mother mold me" line for her shit "Deeper and Deeper" song.

by Anonymousreply 2March 21, 2022 2:47 AM

That was more like Pettibone’s sound. I think he made a bunch of songs that sounded like that.

Vogue copied this song

by Anonymousreply 3March 21, 2022 2:51 AM

Strange since Vogue was written before Miss You Much.

Vogue was written to be the B-side to Like A Prayer's "Keep It Together."

But then again we all know Janet's biggest "hits" are just other people's (Diana Ross, Carly Simon, Supremes, Sly Stone, America, Joni Mitchell) music with new lyrics laid on top.

by Anonymousreply 4March 21, 2022 2:56 AM

They're both produced by Shep Pettibone, who often reused his sounds in most of his songs and remixes. He had a signature sound that all the pop stars tapped into at the time. You hear nearly the same shit in all his work. That's why it's so recognizable.

Actually, M worked with Shep first on the Express Yourself remix, and that's where a lot of these sounds were first used.

But Shep, Jimmy and Terry, etc. all sampled and ripped from tons of artists previously anyway. They all did.

by Anonymousreply 5March 21, 2022 3:00 AM

[quote[But then again we all know Janet's biggest "hits" are just other people's (Diana Ross, Carly Simon, Supremes, Sly Stone, America, Joni Mitchell) music with new lyrics laid on top.

That is so stupid. The samples Jam & Lewis started using in RN1814 (None are in Control). were used as musical elements, and each song has like 4 or 5.

It is nothing like the way Puff Daddy used Diana Ross "I'm coming out" as the entire basis of "Mo Money, Mo Porlbems'.

The only Janet song that is kind of like that is All For You.

by Anonymousreply 6March 21, 2022 3:00 AM

Back when Janet could see her feet and didn’t hide her gunt under a huge burka.

by Anonymousreply 10April 8, 2022 11:55 PM

Considering the amazing Vogue came first, it sounds like he took a fantastic song (Miss You Much) and infused it with Vogue to poor effect.

I love both songs (original versions).

by Anonymousreply 11April 9, 2022 12:02 AM

Both of them were only as good as their producers.

by Anonymousreply 12April 9, 2022 12:14 AM

Is this one of those threads where OP creates it and then posts ten replies? It has that unhinged feel from space.

by Anonymousreply 13April 9, 2022 12:21 AM

I don't have a bone to pick in this fight, but Janet was never in the same tier as Madonna -- or her brother. Both MJ and Madonna were the top male/female pop artists of the '80s. Madonna continued to dominate into the '90s. Though successful in her own right, Janet was never a worldwide phenomenon like these two. In neither record sales nor concert tours. I would say outside of English-speaking countries she was mostly known as MJ's little sister.

by Anonymousreply 14April 9, 2022 12:32 AM

At the Chinese buffet she was known as: WeGonnaNeedMoShrimp!

by Anonymousreply 15April 9, 2022 12:37 AM

It's not a rip-off. It's the mainstream music industry that is a lot smaller than people think. The small pool of producers, songwriters, singers and instrumentalists leads to a lot of overlapping of sound. With Madonna and Janet, you had two pop stars who made dance music and marketed to a similar demographic (teens, women and gays). I just think it just shows how manufactured it all is and these pop performers depend on a lot of help for their sound and looks.

by Anonymousreply 20April 9, 2022 1:02 AM

OP, everyone knows that.

“Express Yourself” is a direct rip-off of The Staples Singers’ “Respect Yourself”. She even lifted the lyrics and gave no credit. Welcome to the world of pop music.

By all means let’s argue about songs that were released 33 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 23April 9, 2022 1:17 AM

by Anonymousreply 24April 9, 2022 1:51 AM

I mean numbers don't lie. Janet has sold 100 million albums. Madonna? 300 million.

by Anonymousreply 25April 9, 2022 2:09 AM

[quote] Madonna continued to dominate into the '90s.

Yeah, so much so that she had nary a #1 album stateside through the entirety of the decade and was all but written off for a time. Meanwhile, in the same decade, Janet signed two of the biggest record deals in history, had a string of Hot 100 hits, mega-successful world tours, two #1 albums and a hit Greatest Hits package, nabbed an Oscar nom, starred in a #1 film and set even more industry records than she did in the ‘80s.

But you digress.

by Anonymousreply 26April 9, 2022 2:11 AM

R14 got it right. This silly competition set forth by the OP is really lame.

by Anonymousreply 27April 9, 2022 2:17 AM

R26 brings up a very important point to ponder...

Is it better to have a #1 album for a week (Janet) or sell a shit ton of albums (Madonna)?

Which do you think your bottom line would prefer?

I saw Janet in Vegas. It was 50 minutes long she played like 30 seconds of her hits and then ended the show. The show opening was her playing the full video Escapade. Our seats were bad and they were 150. People were fucking pissed.

Janet's RN World Tour remains the biggest debut world tour in history. Her Emmy-winning Velvet Rope tour was so wildly successful that seating at the Aloha Stadium had to be expanded to meet demand. The same tour and her subsequent All For You tour garnered record ratings when aired on HBO. Her janet. tour was massively successful and, much like several of her other tours, it played multiple continents. Her Up Close and Personal tour was in such great demand that, in April of 2011, she extended the North American and European legs into the fall of that year due to massive sellouts, and she also extended the tour into Australia, Africa, and South America.

by Anonymousreply 41April 9, 2022 6:06 AM

You so realize that Vogue was recorded in late 1988 at the end of the Like a Prayer album sessions?

Madonna felt it didn't fit on the LAP album and Warner's didn't think it was single material so they pushed Madonna to release it as a B side to one of her LAP singles, when the Dick Tracy project and soundtrack came up, Madonna though it fit with it and the rest is history

I have been listening to some old Janet Jackson songs lately and what I have found is that for me, her thin voice really grates, but the songs stand up anyway. I like some old Madonna songs too, but not many have held up for me.

They are such different performers I don’t get why they are constantly compared to each other by me or anyone else. I guess because they both put on shows where the dancing was as important as the song.

by Anonymousreply 45April 9, 2022 11:29 AM

You bring up a good point R45. The 1980s really introduced the advent of the dancing pop star, or, at least, took it to a new level, thanks to Michael Jackson. Madonna and Janet were two of the early incarnations of that phenomenon, if not the two earliest major females. But, like you, I think this is where the comparisons stop. And, as we can see from this thread, most DLers aren't falling for this fake "war" between the two.

by Anonymousreply 46April 9, 2022 11:38 AM

The Shep Pettibone remix of Miss You Much sounds more like a Shep Pettibone track than it does a Janet Jackson or Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis track.

And Miss You Much always reminded me of Paula Abdul's Knocked Out, which was not a Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis track but an LA Reid/Babyface track.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 47April 9, 2022 1:14 PM

Anyway, Shep Pettibone remixed some amazing songs, some of which were produced by the legendary Stephen Hague, who produced late 80s early 90s classics like Pet Shops Boys, New Order, Erasure, Holly Johnson, Communards, OMD, Dubstar, Banderas and Jane Wiedlin.

On Jane Wiedlin's Song Of The Factory FUCK OFF SHEP is played in morse code.

by Anonymousreply 59April 14, 2022 11:14 PM

I like Janet. Saw her in SF about 10 years at the Bill Graham-a small venue. It was half empty. To be fair, Kylie played to half capacity there, too. Every time I’ve seen Madonna it’s been with huge crowds. This last tour she did had ridiculously priced tickets so I skipped it. She’d never do a greatest hits tour but it would be a hit.

by Anonymousreply 67April 15, 2022 4:26 AM

I don't think anyone cares about these elderly women anymore, but probably the only thing Janet has over Madonna is aging more gracefully (admittedly not a high bar with Madonna)

Not a fan of either but can probably remember more Madonna lyrics than Janet - while catchy, I can really only recall the tag lines of Janet's songs which were usually the titles. Probably everything to do with the amount of airtime (and also, I listed to mostly top 10 radio as a kid)

by Anonymousreply 68April 15, 2022 4:32 AM

Who is this racist fag referring to THE Janbot as a gorilla?

by Anonymousreply 71April 15, 2022 5:12 PM

I never really got the obsession some gays have pitting female pop divas against each other. Since Madonna and Janet's heyday we're the 80s and 90s, most of their fanbase overlaps. Gen X gays here also love Paula Abdul, Jody Watley, Cyndi Lauper and Whitney Houston. Vadgebot and Janbot are mentally ill loons who live in their mom's basement as well as Britbot and Swiftbot who aren't as bad but show up often.

Why is calling Jabba a gorilla racist? We have no idea what color Jabba is. Calling Jabba a gorilla has nothing to do with race.

However, when Jabba uses words like "faggot" which Jabba does on a daily basis, it's absolutely homophobic.

So shut the fuck up, gorilla.

Jabba, do you ever get tired of being wrong?

by Anonymousreply 96April 17, 2022 11:20 PM

Madonna needs to take a lesson from Janet and start taking breaks from the public eye. Make people miss her. Janet's long break helped build up some mystery around her after being overexposed in the early 2000s. Madonna never stopped overexposing herself since the 2000s.

by Anonymousreply 97April 17, 2022 11:40 PM

No, sorry, the last time she had a hit abum was when Regan was in office!

by Anonymousreply 98April 17, 2022 11:40 PM

To Gen Z, Madonna is strictly an 80s artist. She doesn't seem to get that her post-80s material which she seems more fond of her is only really appreciated by Xers and Millennials who were around for it. All of Madonna's most known songs to younger kids are her 80s hits: Like A Virgin, Cherish, Lucky Star, Dress You Up, etc. Madge should just be like Kylie Minogue and Debbie Gibson and lean in her 80s dance pop roots and camp factor. She could endear herself to a younger audience if she stopped being so pretentious.

Some of you cunts already mentioned that Shep Pettibone's "remixes" were all the exact same song. There was no theft involved. Cunt Janbot loves her straw man arguments.

Both Madonna and Janet Jackson seem like they have avocado stalks growing out of their pussies

by Anonymousreply 114May 1, 2022 11:41 AM

Madonna or her cheap ass chola offspring weren’t at the low rent Met Gala. If KarTRASHians are on the list, anyone can get in at this point. Madonna was on stage in Columbia looking like the homeless crazy woman near Houston street Whole Foods who is still dressed in her 1981 disco outfit thinking she’s the same person as she was when she first wore it. It’s so sad and she’s mentally ill, what’s Madonnas excuse? M seems to have stopped her famous anal diet and exercise regime about 5 years ago (was she diagnosed with a disease she’s not telling ?) she was fit and looked decent up until then. Her plastic surgeon should be in jail for that abomination. She’s seemingly drunk and high which was the most anti Madonna lifestyle. Her fake JHoe/KimK ass is laughable as it’s too large for her short body. Her once famous toned man arms are grandma fleshy. And her moves were…NOT like Jagger.

I think it was Guy Ritchie what done her in.

Janet totally ripped off Karen White.

How dare you Karen me!

Both bitches ripped off Pia Zadora and never gave her any credit.

Bitch, puh-lease. Karyn's debut album was made possible due to the runaway success of Janet's CONTROL. What's more, Janet set the template for chair dancing in her Pleasure Principle video, and everyone else followed.

Why is Janbot still loose in the community? No one cares about the woman. I literally NEVER HEAR ABOUT HER OUTSIDE DL these days. I couldn’t name more than a couple of her songs.

by Anonymousreply 122May 3, 2022 5:13 PM

Surely Liza set the template for chair dancing!

by Anonymousreply 123May 3, 2022 5:20 PM

Hats and Boys! I invented that!

by Anonymousreply 124May 3, 2022 5:20 PM

It's common knowledge that Madonna ripped off Pia Zadora's Heartbeat of Love music video in the inferior Express Yourself video.

There's a common thread here, people.

Wake up and smell the coffee!

Well then perhaps you should take your head out of your ass for a few minutes a day.

Yeah, Shep really liked doing the same thing over and over again. I was listening to his "Like A Prayer" remixes the other day and the bassline there is pretty much the bassline of "Erotica".

R111, about 10 years ago, Julie released an updated version of "Vague". The references are still kinda dated now, but more up to date than before, obviously:

[italic]Paris Hilton, Kathie Lee - are as vague as they can be

Teri Hatcher, Helen Hunt - talk about two boring... girls

Jesse James, Anderson, Pam - personality of spam

Katie Holmes, Heidi Klum - suck the air out of every room

Ryan Seacrest, Kelly Ripa - wish their mouths had a zipper

Britney Spears loves to sing and wreck the cover of a magazine

Kirstie Alley's brain is gone, Dr Phil gives good yawn

Sarah Palin thinks she's great, she's just cold boogers on a paper plate

Why they're famous we don't know, but all the Kardashians have to go

What’s the difference between Jabba and Janbot?

by Anonymousreply 128May 31, 2022 1:04 PM

Madonna hates Janet Jackson because they are both very weak singers but what Madonna had to get raped several times over various east village rooftops to achieve, was just HANDED to Janet by her brother's success.

by Anonymousreply 129May 31, 2022 1:59 PM

Janet didn't grow up poor. And as an ambitious white woman, Madonna feels this should have been her life.

Janet never had to swat cockroaches off of her legs at night as she slept on the floor. Janet never had to spread her legs in the name of art and flash her shrub-lined starfish for grocery money. Janet never had to give blowjobs in thrift store dressing rooms to get wardrobe or piss on a director's chest to get a video shot. Janet never had to flush most of her unborn family down the toilet in the name of Momma's career - all Janet's love children got to go to school in Switzerland. Janet never had to insist on herself over and over again to clownish proportions to stay relevant, she just had to show up to the studio. So yeah, there is some hate there.

Madonna and Janet never sounded similar except in the mid-90s when both went more contemporary R&B. Janet and Madonna were never in competition. Janet was competing with Pebbles, Vanessa Williams, Karyn White and Paula Abdul and all the new jack swing/freestyle girls.

Madonna didn't have competition by the time Janet rebooted her career with Control. Madonna's serious competition had to have been Cyndi Lauper, Pat Benetar, Toni Basil, and other early 80s video stars. Madonna stuck out enough with use of shock value, sluttiness and fashion. By the mid-80s, Madonna's main rival was Michael Jackson.

Janet in the 90s had no competition in the R&B world. Whitney was in a whole different category, neither Janet nor Madonna were competition, her competition was Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Michael Bolton, etc.

I do think Madonna's early songs like Holiday, Borderline, Lucky Star and Everybody took influence from soul and disco. Didn't her first album get a lot of airplay on Black stations?

[quote] Madonna hates Janet Jackson

I don't think Madonna hates Janet. She defended her after the whole Nipplegate thing. Of course Madonna probably doesn't respect Janet because of nepotism. Janet did make a slick jab at Madonna's immodesty (ironic). Madonna is obsessed with Michael Jackson and always singing him praise. I don't think she hates Janet but probably doesn't regard her well. Madonna went in on Whitney and showed serious jealousy of Whitney's talent and movie success

by Anonymousreply 132May 31, 2022 2:51 PM

I think every single female singer on earth can probably act better than Madonna. And the funny thing is Madonna is so serious about wanting to be great at it.

No one has a bigger cuntier ego than Vadge but in her acting she has zero presence or ability.
