Republicans Set up Shop at Gas Stations to Draw New Voters

[quote] The GOP continues to see potential electoral advantage in blaming President Joe Biden for high gas prices, an issue the White House is looking to offset ahead of the midterms.

The democrats need to get out into communities hardest hit by higher gas prices and counter this messaging.

How do you suggest Dems counter the message on gas prices when they're in charge?

by Anonymousreply 1March 21, 2022 2:44 AM

R1 It's Putin's fault!

by Anonymousreply 2March 21, 2022 2:53 AM

R1. What exactly do you think Dems should do to lower gas prices? They can't exactly tell gas companies to lower their prices.

by Anonymousreply 3March 21, 2022 3:05 AM

R2, dontcha know, EVERYTHING is Putin's fault. None of Truman's "the buck stops here" with Sleepy Joe!

by Anonymousreply 4March 21, 2022 3:06 AM

I've been seeing these for over a year. Hot scoop Vanity Fair.

by Anonymousreply 5March 21, 2022 3:07 AM

How can they counter it? This is all his fault.

by Anonymousreply 6March 21, 2022 3:09 AM

I mean, it is Putin's fault R4. But even putting that aside, what are Republicans campaigning on about gas prices? What are their policies that are actually going to reduce the cost of living for the average person? The truth is, they don't have any. The voting population in the US is now so stupid they think that government is God and can fix anything just by saying they can.

by Anonymousreply 7March 21, 2022 3:09 AM

Trump would bomb the shit outta them oil refineries and show them who's boss! He ain't no wimp like Biden!

by Anonymousreply 8March 21, 2022 3:09 AM

[quote]How do you suggest Dems counter the message on gas prices when they're in charge?

Democrats could advise people to save money by making fewer trips to vacation homes, reduce the number of family cars to no more than three, and enroll their kids in a less expensive private school.

by Anonymousreply 9March 21, 2022 3:14 AM

People should also be buying affordable electric cars if they only intend on making short trips. That'll cut their fuel costs.

Very few people in this country really needs such massive, fuel-guzzling cars.

by Anonymousreply 10March 21, 2022 3:16 AM

Gas prices started rising almost from day one of Biden's presidency. For the first time, the US was energy independent under Trump, and Biden ruined everything. Seriously, Biden has made Jimmy Carter look like Lincoln. The midterms are going to be a bloodbath.

by Anonymousreply 11March 21, 2022 3:20 AM

People in rural areas should be advised by Democrats to use public transportation instead of driving.

by Anonymousreply 12March 21, 2022 3:21 AM

Incorrect R11.

It's crazy that we're still getting people posting "Sleepy Joe" crap.

by Anonymousreply 14March 21, 2022 3:25 AM

Republicans are too stupid to think of anything better.

by Anonymousreply 15March 21, 2022 3:30 AM

Gotta love Republicans pointing the finger and saying “I told you so” when their party can’t offer a single workable solution to any problem the U.S. is facing.

by Anonymousreply 16March 21, 2022 3:35 AM

R10 Google a map of the country please.

by Anonymousreply 17March 21, 2022 3:36 AM

Do you regularly drive from one end of the country to the other R17? How many miles do you commute a day?

by Anonymousreply 18March 21, 2022 3:42 AM

R18 Twenty.

by Anonymousreply 19March 21, 2022 3:44 AM

R16, how about drilling for oil instead of begging Iran and Venezuela , securing the southern border and supporting, not defunding the police (for a start).

by Anonymousreply 20March 21, 2022 3:45 AM

R20. Silly goose. There are countless oil licenses. The reason the US is begging Iran and Venezuela is because they can drill right now. Biden doesn't control the oil companies. He can't write an executive order to force them to drill. They are private companies who will take time to shift to increased drilling.

I'm sure some are also enjoying that the scarcity is creating profit - just as capitalism intended.

R19. 20 miles is sufficient for an EV.

by Anonymousreply 22March 21, 2022 3:51 AM

None of this is Putin's fault. Biden OWNS this.

by Anonymousreply 23March 21, 2022 3:53 AM

R22 Go fuck yourself. Buy it for me bitch.

by Anonymousreply 24March 21, 2022 3:54 AM

I didn't know Biden owned the oil companies R23 and could lower their prices by edict.

Oh wait, he doesn't.

What's your budget for a new car R24? I understand you might not have one, because I don't. But if you're serious about wanting to cut fuel costs, and have the money to spare, you should consider a Leaf or another affordable EV. Bitching about it on here is not productive.

by Anonymousreply 25March 21, 2022 3:56 AM

The midterms almost always flip. It's a lost cause. Focus on 2024

by Anonymousreply 26March 21, 2022 4:05 AM

Yeah, when George W was president gas was 25¢ a gallon.

by Anonymousreply 27March 21, 2022 4:07 AM

America really despised Jimmy Carter for leveling with them and telling them there was an energy crisis. Everyone should put on a sweater and turn down the thermostat a degree. Then Reagan (with his cocksucker wife) came in and said let er' rip. Buy your giant cars and guzzle gas like there's no tomorrow! Saint Ronny also ripped the solar panels off the White House roof toot sweet. This shit has been going on for over 40 years.

by Anonymousreply 28March 21, 2022 4:10 AM

What exactly would Republicans do that would cause the price of gas at the pump to fall?

The price of crude oil has fallen yet the price at the pump hasn't.

What specific act would Republicans take about this?

by Anonymousreply 29March 21, 2022 4:10 AM

R25 I don't have a "budget for a new car." You don't know what normal life is like. You are so full of advice.

by Anonymousreply 30March 21, 2022 4:10 AM

Like I said R30. I don't have a budget for a new car either. Learn to read.

by Anonymousreply 31March 21, 2022 4:14 AM

R31 So learn from that and adjust your shitty non-solutions to problems you obviously don't understand. Cunt.

by Anonymousreply 32March 21, 2022 4:18 AM

Gas stations have cameras everywhere, and I'd be willing to bet at least 10% of the people putting up those stickers were dumb enough to do it while filling up... and paying by credit card, or driving a car with plates associated with them.

Station owners should review the footage, correlate it to transaction times or license plates, then sue the fuckers for vandalism & seek damages of $50k per sticker, arguing reputational harm in addition to the cost of paying someone to remove the stickers & residue. After a few Deplorables have gotten bankrupted by lawsuits, they'll stop thinking it's cute.

by Anonymousreply 33March 21, 2022 4:19 AM

What are you talking about R32? You sound extremely bitter and angry.

by Anonymousreply 34March 21, 2022 4:20 AM

Husband works in oil and gas (not for an oil company) and does government affairs. This administration is very hostile to oil and thinks windmills and solar will fix everything. For an administration that says to look to the science, they are ignoring science. Alternative energy will not provide for our needs. Oil companies are keen to switch to alternative energy, but it won’t be enough. These high prices are a tax on the poor, and suggesting everyone gets a 60k electric car is thoughtless.

by Anonymousreply 35March 21, 2022 4:20 AM

The gas stations may agree with the stickers and are putting them there themselves.

by Anonymousreply 36March 21, 2022 4:21 AM

R33 = unhinged

by Anonymousreply 37March 21, 2022 4:26 AM

Windmills and solar will definitely not fix everything R35. That's why the admin has to invest in nuclear ASAP.

But the real question is what can either party do about the high prices of oil? Yes, they are a real burden on the cost of living but the GOP has not provided any concrete solutions to the crisis. The real solution seems to be time, as oil companies make use of the existing permits to create more stock.

And FYI, electric cars are not 60k unless you're getting a Tesla or something. You can get a new Leaf for half that. You can get used ones for less than that, though there are probably added costs if you have to replace the battery.

But the savings on fuel will be quite significant.

by Anonymousreply 38March 21, 2022 4:32 AM

People are so willfully ignorant. This happens with every single Democratic President. Oil companies raise prices because they don't like Democrats. They don't like regulation or talk of alternative energy. I think Biden should play their game and threaten to nationalize the petroleum industry. Then he could increase drilling, increase oil production, and lower prices. This is a false crisis meant to give Republicans the Congress in 2022 and stupid Americans go along with it.

by Anonymousreply 39March 21, 2022 4:44 AM

I'm not sure whether public charging stations pay less per kWh than households, treat it as a loss-leader & absorb some of the cost, or both, but in Florida, if you use your own electricity at home for 100% of your car's charging, your electric bill is likely to increase by at LEAST as much as your savings on gas after buying a new Tesla.

Source: a friend with a Tesla who installed his own charger at home, used it for about 5 weeks until he got his first electric bill that painfully illustrated the cost of home-charging, and now grudgingly endures waiting 10-15 minutes to use public superchargers & only charges at home sparingly because it costs so much.

At $4+/gallon, charging at home might be cheaper than buying equivalent amounts of gas, but at pandimic-low sub-$3/gal prices, charging at home is expensive by comparison.

by Anonymousreply 40March 21, 2022 4:45 AM

It will depend on your location R40, that's true. And also the model of the EV in question vs. whichever gas car you have.

You can compare here. I believe on average the cost of an EV is cheaper.

God they're so desperate. Tranny teens, Hunter's laptop, race theory... I guess they're hoping to woo those weak-minded Undecideds, who walk into the polling station and go 'eeny meeny miney mo'.

by Anonymousreply 42March 21, 2022 4:59 AM

r41, I'm not really sure how FPL's pricing works (hell, I don't think anyone really does... half the bill consists of fees & surcharges of one kind or another that seem to change monthly with no predictable rhyme or reason), but I *think* part of it is due to tiered pricing... the first {n} kwh are cheap, the next {x} kwh are less-cheap, then you slam into a hugely-expensive cliff for the next {y} kwh, before the rate falls again for {z} kwh and beyond. Charging at home firmly kicks you up into {y} territory for most of the additional kwh, so the marginal cost of the power to charge at home is basically at FPL's most expensive rate.

Seriously, though, FPL's rate structure is like something out of a dystopian British sci-fi bureaucracy nightmare.

by Anonymousreply 43March 21, 2022 5:03 AM

The price of gas is up $1, so I'm going to vote for the guy who promised a health care plan in two weeks for four years and boasts about grabbing women by the pussy!

by Anonymousreply 44March 21, 2022 5:04 AM

Thanks for the warning R43. Yet another reason not to move to Florida.

by Anonymousreply 45March 21, 2022 5:07 AM

Desperation is when you continue to insist you "won" with more votes than registered voters.
