Bernie working to block Kamala in 2024
Top figures from Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign are privately encouraging Ro Khanna to run for president in 2024 if Joe Biden doesn’t seek a second term, giving the California congressman an important stamp of approval from progressives as the party looks to its post-Biden future.
Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ former presidential campaign manager, and Mark Longabaugh, a senior adviser to Sanders during his 2016 bid, have both urged Khanna to consider a campaign in the event Biden declines to run again, according to a person familiar with their discussions.
Democratic officeholders are reluctant to speak publicly about their ambitions in a potential open race in 2024 out of concern that they could undermine the president, who has said he plans to campaign for a second term if he is in good health. There are also sensitivities surrounding Vice President Kamala Harris, who is atop the list of possible candidates but faces skepticism from some party insiders who fear she cannot win a general election.
The talks between Khanna and current and former Sanders advisers offer a window into the hushed, behind-the-scenes conversations that Democrats are having in the event that Biden doesn’t seek reelection. They also demonstrate that a key part of Sanders’ brain trust is looking to Khanna, a close ally to the Vermont senator, as his heir apparent.

Ro Khanna does not have a prayer. I genuinely like Bernie but so much of his strategy is just pure delusion because his people don’t listen to criticism. He’ll be like Goldwater: the next generation of Democrats will be heavily influenced by him, and his legacy will come about that way.
Sherrod Brown has been waiting in the wings since he took a pass on 2020. His wife’s Twitter addiction might be an issue, but maybe not.

This thread's r1 is the best r1 so far this year.
r2, Bernie is a thousand years old; he'll likely be dead to us by 2024. As for Warren, the republican will just dust of the jokes about her being a Native American.

Go down with your best. I hope Warren is the chosen candidate. In another place and time - Kamala could win this. She's incumbent and attractive and likeable and smart and progressive and cautious and surrounded with talented and all wrong. Pete is not as fake - but he's meaner and weirder. They ain't it. Stacey Abrams seems sketchy to me. I don't know what it is.
Elizabeth Warren will not be undone by that native remark. STOP repeating it. Nobody cares about it but Donald Trump.
Trump will NOT be in the 2024 race. Warren is an excellent candidate and would be a marvellous president. The rhetoric is changing. Biden is the bridge back to something resembling more normal communication. That's his historical purpsose.

Why do people keep mentioning Michelle Obama? She didn't want her husband to run and didn't much enjoy her second term as first lady. The Obamas are on their way to becoming Billionaires. Michelle has no interest in holding any elected office, ever. Have you been black in this country? She doesn't have Barry's tolerance or arrogance. Like Oprah, she likes her life just fine. Thanks. And no, she doesn't view your endorsement as a compliment. Sheesh. And she has no experience. Stop with the popularity contest thing. She has no stomach left to appease amuricans anymore.
Only sociopaths and/or narcissists want to be president of the United States. ONLY. Ever. You don't have to be so mentally disordered in some other countries to want to run and rule. But in the USA, yes.
Don't idealize them. Just grade them.
Warren, Klobuchar, Pete and Kamala DO come out on top. AOC will one day be great. For Canada or Denmark. Bernie could have been IT - the great change - but it's too late now.
Stability IS required. But Change is NEEDED. If they can strap Joe onto one of those things they wheeled the dying Eva Peron aroung on - he might even win another term! Dieing in office and giving Kamala 18 to 24 months to prove her considerable worth would be ideal.

The only way Biden won't run in 2024 is if he's dead. He's got a massive ego and the Dems won't dare challenge him for fear Trump'll win. The DNC fucked up totally ensuring he got the nomination in 2020. Insanity.
I know a woman who worked for Pelosi. She was a DNC insider. She told me back in March 2019 (when the Dems polling highest were 1) Biden 2) Bernie and 3) Beto) that the plan was first of all to take out Beto O'Rourke and Kamala Harris because they could block Texas and California, the big delegate counts. O'Rourke would be taken out through a concerted media campaign to trash him, harping on him being a "privileged white man" and getting all the women and black TV pundits to attack him. Kamala would be more difficult as that same media and pundits couldn't overtly trash her and look racist/sexist but her campaign would prove to be a disaster. It did. Not ready for primetime. Bernie and Warren would cancel each other out. Buttigieg had no natural constituency - Indiana's irrelevant. Nobody could take Biden out even though the DNC knew he was too damn old to be running for anything. She was right about everything.

What about a Sherrod/Ro ticket? Or will we be in hot water for having no femme on the ticket?

Absolutely not! Voters with more than one functioning brain cell will realize that the Dems are interested in suitable leadership and direction, rather than empty political correctness.

I am not clear on why Kamala was not chosen for the Breyer replacement on SCOTUS. It is the perfect opportunity to gracefully move her out of the VP role.

OP....That guy looks like a wimpy Democrat....yawn....It's like we are begging Trump to move back to the White House in 2024. And HE AIN'T LEAVING next time. He will have his GOP Congressional Cult change the Constitution so he can stay as long as he feels like it. Wait and See..Future Idiot GOP Senator Josh Mandel is going around talking about term limits. Wait until his King wins in 2024 and Senator Josh is going to walk that back real quick.

Klobuchar has momentum. Biden should have named her VP but he got pushed around by Clyburn who is a nobody. Klobuchar should push Schumer out as Majority Leader. He's such a useless, ball-less POS.
Abrams is way too goofy. Pulling that Star Trek shit was ridiculous. She'll need to win the Governorship of Georgia massively to even stay in competition. Her ego is massive and the talent attributed to her for organizing actually belongs to Lauren Groh the woman who ran her campaign. Abrams has only ever been elected as a state legislator which is a part-time job in Georgia.

Who the hell thinks anyone would vote for Kamala?
Democrats are insane if they run her as a candidate, but then, the Dems often make choices that hamstring their own party.
Wonder why, hmmmmmmm.

Klobuchar's been a very successful Senator unlike Harris who in her short stint, did jack shit. Klobuchar also can manipulate and attack Republicans head-on. They're scared of her. She's a bitch we want on our side.

Bernie was just another male chauvinist pig in the movements of the time. Raging misogyny in the leadership ranks of the civil rights movement. the peace movement and the environmental movement.
Same as it ever was.

I don’t know what is happening with Kamala, but she has become a joke in the last two yrs. I did not see that coming. I thought she was great. There is no possible way she could lead if Biden died. It is a very scary situation now.

[quote]AOC would actually be the best candidate to deliver an Obama-esque landslide...
Nuttiest post so far in a thread full of nutty posts!
AOC spent 19 million to win re-election in a D+28 district where shockingly few bothered to vote for her (she still won). The enthusiasm for her is in her media fandom, not the voters.

I (from Colorado/Utah) voted for Klobuchar in the primary. She’s a feisty Midwestern moderate and the Dems so need that. Enough with the coastal “elites.” Kamala needs to bow out using some excuse like wanting to be a circuit court judge.

AOC will only qualify by age 22 days before election day 2024, regardless of how you feel about her, I don't see America voting in someone that young as President. Young people don't vote in the numbers that old people vote and old people aren't going to vote for her at that age.

To me the most important thing is winning and while I would gladly vote for a qualified minority or woman, I am not sure America would. There are several attractive, and lets face it an ugly person is at a disadvantage, white men who could possibly win. Senator Chris Murphy (Connecticut), Senator Brian Schatz (Hawaii), Senator Martin Heinrich (New Mexico), Senator Bob Casey Jr. (Pennsylvania), Senator Mark Warner (Virginia), Congressman Jason Crow (Colorado), Congressman Jim Himes, (Connecticut) born in the country of Peru but to American Parents, are just a few that come to mind. Running someone who won't win doesn't interest me and won't help minorities or women either.

I like Katie Porter. She has a big mouth & can really get in people’s faces. I think that’s a good thing, Her voice isn’t haranguing like Hillary’s. She’s not an annoying performative grandstander like Corey Booker. She sticks to topics like jobs, schools, graft, asshole bankers. People liked Trumpfir getting in faces with for his big mouth. Problem is theu mistook him for a populist who actually cares about the population. Katie Porter really does care.
But she might be gay and that would be red meat for the Fox News evangelicals. I know she was married to a man and has kids but it almost seems like they got married to have kids then divorced so she could call herself a “single mom” to further her political career. Lots of gay people marry heterosexuals and lots of lavender marriages still take place. If she is gay the narrative would immediately be switched over to trans by GOP and that would sink her candidacy. And she is funny looking. That’s never been a problem for a male candidate (Nixon & LBJ, yikes), but of course there’s a double standard.

Chris Murphy might not do it because he has young kids. Being a Senator and President is two different things.

Agree with r126. Midwest & Southern Dems are so different from the elitist West coast Dems, especially ones in red states. They really have to work to overcome the toxic Repubs.
Katie Porter is from the Midwest, so she shares a lot of those traits. I would like to see her as Speaker one day.

The candidate needs to be Midwestern or Southern. No more toxic New York and California politicians in nationwide elections.

R129 I think Katie's problem with not having a second husband is she isn't attractive and straight men wouldn't want to hook up with some unattractive woman who has a bunch of kids. And who is obviously bossy as hell.
The Governor of Kentucky - a moderate Democrat who managed to get elected in a deep-red state, is I think definitely in the running. Two Southern Governors - Clinton and Carter spring to mind. Beshear is also good-looking. Amy Klobuchar's also a good bet. It's true the majority of the country does not live in California or the Northeast and Democrats' obsession with excluding them is self-defeating.
Let's see AOC get elected statewide in a blue state before she can even dream of getting the nomination. Same goes for Pete Buttigieg. He and Chasten can move to Maryland and run from there.

Democrats need a Midwestern or Southerner as their candidate. Someone who would appeal to the suburbs and not scare off independents. Of course the activists in the party would never support that kind of candidate. Dems are screwed since activists turn out to vote in primaries.

Do they? I thought they mostly turned up at caucuses to pound their shoes on the table, shout everyone else down and generally bully their way to achieve what they can't at the voting booth.
