Do we know? Whose idea was that? Someone at the Pentagon? Someone in the Bush Administration?
Who Came Up with the Idea of Going to War with Iraq in 2001/02?

Dick Fucking Cheney.

IT WAS HILLARY!!!
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 20, 2022 6:17 PM |
All the neocons.

Read a book OP!

The Project for the New American Century. Neoconservative think tank that favored American imperialism (they called it "hegemony"). Many of its members were in the Bush administration.

Politics. After 9/11, merely invading Afghanistan wasn’t deemed proportionate to the provocation.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 20, 2022 6:25 PM |
The PNAC was just the public argument. The plan was probably much older, coming out of the CFR, and Stink Tanks.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 20, 2022 6:27 PM |
A Cheney can't cum unless he's at war, or shooting someone's face off
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 20, 2022 6:37 PM |
We invaded because Afghanistan was blamed for 9/11 but 15 of the 19 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 20, 2022 6:43 PM |
^ These days, pretty much
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 20, 2022 6:46 PM |
Neocons. Rumsfeld, Cheney, that vile disgusting Bolton et al. And the mainstream media ( NOT only fox but outlets like Wapo, New Republic, The Atlantic and New York Times) were shameless propaganda cheerleaders. They published op Ed after op ed supporting the war and attacked any politician who opposed it in the most hateful and slanderous ways.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 20, 2022 6:50 PM |
Is there an argument for the war's success? Iraq, at least, is quiet, for now. The Middle East also seems more placid then when an OBL could be lionized in the Arab world for his 9/11 derring-do.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 20, 2022 7:00 PM |
Don't forget me R13! I was one of the biggest Iraq invasion cheerleaders!
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 20, 2022 7:02 PM |
Mearsheimer and Walt have said that the Israel lobby were a necessary, though insufficient, cause for the war, i.e. not the only cause of the war, but one without which there would have not been quite enough momentum for the war.

The reasons we went had nothing to do with anything much discussed openly at the time nor now.
Our long term goal is to divide the rest of the world into small ethnoreligious states that bear a certain amount of animosity to their neighbors for religious and cultural reasons, to maintain their dependence and our hegemony.
See Yugoslavia for one example.

The Iraq invasion was initially called Operation Iraqi Liberation (O-I-L). Thank you Dubya, Cheney, Condi, Rummy, and the rest.
Why do we keep electing Republicans and expect a different result? They ALWAYS start wars and trash the economy (at least in this 50 year old's lifetime).
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 20, 2022 7:14 PM |
And, R18, don’t withhold your thanks to Hillary, Biden & all the other Democratic senators who green-lighted the invasion.

I see the 'both sides do it' troll has shown up ^

Or. R20, a Berniecrat.

Did you recently awaken from a 20-year coma, OP?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 20, 2022 8:01 PM |
Judith Miller and her employer the NYT were big proponents of it.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 20, 2022 8:03 PM |
Don't forget Bush Jr.s personal vendetta against Sadam Hussein to finish the job his father didn't in the earler Gulf War

Try harder, troll.

How did the Pentagon go along with this?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 20, 2022 8:16 PM |
I'm honored by R26, never having been called a troll before.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 20, 2022 9:13 PM |
R29, you’re not funny, you’re not clever. You have no idea what you’re talking about. Take your sorry stupid ass to another thread.

Oooh, gurl, you've shaken me to my core by such excoriations!

The Iraq Liberation Act was signed by Bill Clinton in 1998. I think everybody though it was a good idea to get rid of Saddam Hussein. He was committing genocide on Kurds and was waging war against neighboring countries all the time.
The republicans just went into Iraq without any military planning.

[quote] On the night of 13 April 1993, a day before George H. W. Bush was scheduled to visit Kuwait City to commemorate the international coalition victory against Iraq in the Persian Gulf War, Kuwaiti authorities arrested 17 persons suspected in the plot to kill Bush using explosives hidden in a Toyota Landcruiser.
As long as I live I will believe that Bush Jr wanted a war with Saddam Hussein to kill him for plotting to kill his father. He knew as long as Saddam was alive his father's life was endangered. So hundreds of thousands of people had to die to keep his father from being threatened again.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 20, 2022 9:37 PM |
Cheney wanted the war most of all but lacked the skills to make it happen. Like that useless Wolfowitz. It was the enablers -- Rumsfeld and Libby -- who knew what buttons to push and actually got the war going.

Donald Rumsfeld was a pharma exec. Yet another example of a businessman thinking he can just charge in and run the government like a business (and failing miserably). See also DJT.

[quote] Donald Rumsfeld was a pharma exec.
Rummy had also been Defense Sec'y under Ford. Youngest-ever & oldest-ever defense secretary.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 20, 2022 10:22 PM |
R35 You're ignorant as can be. Rumsfeld was a three-term congressman, head of OEO, ambassador to NATO, presidential chief of staff and Secretary of Defense all before he went into business at Searle. If any politician knew how to push the Defense buttons, it was Donald Rumsfeld.

Probably Saudi Arabia, as per usual.
