X (movie)

Such a weird movie. I'm amazed they managed to get an R rating for it. It's been getting rave reviews so far, I thought it was just "meh" personally. Mia Goth plays two roles roles in the movie, Maxine, as well as the old lady, Pearl. I don't know how in the hell they pulled that off because there are scenes were they're both together.

The movie is VERY graphic as far as the sex scenes and nudity goes though. The kills don't start until like an hour into the movie, but some of them are rather funny and gloriously bloody. Definitely not for kids.

by Anonymousreply 69December 7, 2022 6:06 PM

They show dick at all?

by Anonymousreply 1March 19, 2022 1:19 PM

Yes. Kid Cudi in particular. I'm not sure if they used a prosthetic for him or not, but his character is hung like a horse. People in the theater gasped.

by Anonymousreply 2March 19, 2022 1:44 PM

Any nice hairy white dick?

by Anonymousreply 3March 19, 2022 1:55 PM

I was kind of on the fence on if I should see this movie or not.

I enjoy a good scare/horror movie, but not torture porn (Saw, etc.).

Was it scary/suspenseful OP or just bloody?

by Anonymousreply 4March 19, 2022 1:58 PM

It gets tense towards the end. There's some good jump scares.

by Anonymousreply 5March 19, 2022 3:19 PM

I'm surprised Brittany would choose to do something so graphic. But i'm glad it's not just her doing the nude scenes.

by Anonymousreply 6March 20, 2022 8:42 AM

Thanks for the spoiler OP you dumb fuck.

by Anonymousreply 7March 20, 2022 9:13 AM

I loved every second of it. I enjoyed Ti West's "House of the Devil" and "The Innkeepers," but this is his most accomplished movie by a long shot. Obviously inspired by "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre", as well as "Eaten Alive". I'm not sure I've seen a modern horror movie work the slasher formula this well.

R4 it's not "scary" IMO, but has some creepy moments, and really ramps up in the last act. It's a slow-burn for the first hour or so. There is a lot of nudity in it —Mia Goth and Brittany Snow show their tits throughout, and Kid Cudi shows pretty much his entire body; the frontal scene R2 is talking about is in shadow, and you see the silhouette of a massive cock hanging between his legs. While it could be his, I wouldn't be surprised if it were prosthetic simply because he's playing a porn star with a notoriously big dick (unless of course he actually is THAT big himself). You also get to see Brittany Snow wiping his cum off her back with a towel.

Also has a very good soundtrack ("Don't Fear the Reaper" is used perfectly in a kill scene), plus the score by Chelsea Wolfe is ominous and spooky.

by Anonymousreply 8March 20, 2022 6:54 PM

Saw it yesterday and thought it was a great horror film. Loved the late '70s esthetic and how it was clearly inspired by "Texas Chainsaw Massacre." The first hour is slow, but the second is intense.

I was surprised Brittany Snow and Jenna Ortega would want to do a film like this.

Kid Cudi seemed to have a prosthetic dick in his full frontal.

by Anonymousreply 9March 20, 2022 7:05 PM

Flopped.

Ti West is a terrible director.

by Anonymousreply 10March 20, 2022 7:08 PM

I saw it, thought it was lame. Didn’t come together plot wise for me at all. Bloody but not really scary. The soundtrack was good but as much as I love “Don’t Fear the Reaper” it seems pretty cliché and on-the-nose. There are other “teenage death songs” out there that aren’t so obvious and overused.

by Anonymousreply 11March 20, 2022 7:12 PM

[quote] I'm not sure if they used a prosthetic for him or not

Oh come on, even though you only see it in silhouette it’s obviously fake. I was more disappointed by his very real pancake ass.

by Anonymousreply 12March 20, 2022 8:09 PM

I think "The Innkeepers" is West's best movie. But this was fun. And count me as surprised as well that Snow would do this movie but she was great in it.

by Anonymousreply 13March 20, 2022 9:25 PM

R10 your loathing of West as a director does not mean this film flopped. It opened at #4 at the US box office and exceeded the projections. Definitely not bad for a slasher flick. It's also gotten largely favorable reviews.

by Anonymousreply 14March 20, 2022 11:56 PM

[quote] your loathing of West as a director does not mean this film flopped. It opened at #4 at the US box office and exceeded the projections. Definitely not bad for a slasher flick. It's also gotten largely favorable reviews.

Yes, it opened at #4 with a $4m gross on a wide release. A Japanese anime film grossed 3 1/2 times more than it did this weekend. Horror films almost always overperform. This one did not. $4m for a wide release horror, even post-pandemic, is a F-L-O-P.

by Anonymousreply 15March 21, 2022 2:54 AM

R7 How did I spoil it?

by Anonymousreply 16March 21, 2022 11:32 AM

You didn't R16.

I hope everyone stayed through the end credits. I didn't know there was a post-credits teaser and had just gotten up to leave when it came on.

I won't spoil it, but director Ti West has confirmed it is legit.

If you missed it, there's a crappy phone recording on YouTube; hopefully A24 will make a better version available soon.

by Anonymousreply 17March 21, 2022 7:23 PM

[quote] [R10] your loathing of West as a director does not mean this film flopped. It opened at #4 at the US box office and exceeded the projections. Definitely not bad for a slasher flick. It's also gotten largely favorable reviews.

It dropped 47% in its second week, despite adding theaters. It sits at $8m gross after two weeks in wide release. That is a FLOP.

by Anonymousreply 18March 28, 2022 12:59 AM

R18 even if it is a financial flop, the box office has no bearing on whether or not the film was good. It has received overwhelmingly positive reviews—I can't think of any modern slasher movie that has a 90%+ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Your fixation on dragging the movie because it didn't rake in "Batman"-caliber box office receipts is beyond stupid, and clearly driven by the fact that you (for some reason) have a vendetta against its director. By the way you write about it, you'd think that Ti West was as overblown as Jordan Peele or Ari Aster, but he's not even remotely in that bracket. His work has pretty much only been in indies and he is not well-known outside of genre fan circles.

by Anonymousreply 19March 28, 2022 1:19 AM

Sweetie, stop trying to justify your being wrong.

by Anonymousreply 20March 28, 2022 1:22 AM

the op included a spoiler in his review. Very annoying.

by Anonymousreply 21March 28, 2022 1:28 AM

Mia's portrayal of Pearl was actually much better than her portrayal of Maxine IMO. Makeup and prosthetics aside, she really acted and sounded completely different. When playing Maxine, there were a few moments where I noticed her British accent slip through.

by Anonymousreply 22March 28, 2022 1:34 AM

Really great horror movie. The kind you don't see much of these days. Even if it doesn't take the box office by storm, it'll have a healthy afterlife on streaming and home video.

by Anonymousreply 23March 28, 2022 1:35 AM

Mia Goth is creepy on and off-screen, and the fact she chose to spawn with that abusive psycho Shia LeBeouf shows she's dumb too.

by Anonymousreply 24March 28, 2022 2:40 AM

R24 I don't find her creepy—she has a childlike sensibility about her though which you can see in interviews. To me, she just seems eccentric. I am baffled however by apparently natural lack of eyebrows.

by Anonymousreply 25March 28, 2022 3:10 AM

by [her] apparently natural lack of eyebrows

by Anonymousreply 26March 28, 2022 3:11 AM

I was gonna say my favorite Ti West is “You’re Next” but I looked it up and he was in it but didn’t direct it. Great slasher with a sense of humor. Barbara Crampton is fabulous in it.

by Anonymousreply 27March 28, 2022 6:42 AM

R27 I loved You're Next and had no idea Ti was in it.

by Anonymousreply 28March 28, 2022 11:53 AM

Mia Goth reminds me of Shelley Duvall a little bit.

by Anonymousreply 29March 29, 2022 12:12 AM

Only not as deep and talented.

by Anonymousreply 30March 29, 2022 2:06 AM

Mia Goth is one very unfortunate looking person - face and figure. I cannot imagine the draw; must be a case of nepotism.

by Anonymousreply 31April 3, 2022 1:58 AM

Mia and Adèle Exarchopoulos have a kind of cunty, constipated face that really annoys the fuck out of me.

And the movie took forever to get going, and then it just ended. The director should watch the movie "Mute Witness" to learn a thing or two about making on-the-set slasher films though.

by Anonymousreply 32April 3, 2022 2:10 AM

R31 then she's perfect for horror movies.

by Anonymousreply 33April 3, 2022 5:10 AM

R31 her grandmother is a Brazilian actress, though I somehow doubt that opened many doors for her. I think I read once that a modeling agent "discovered" her at a music festival—she started out modeling before transitioning into acting. I think she is a pretty decent actress to be honest.

by Anonymousreply 34April 3, 2022 7:21 AM

I am not reading this thread for fear of spoilers, other than to say that I cannot wait to see this. I will see anything that A24 puts out. They are the best and most interesting in terms of films I actually want to see. I'm going back through their catalog of films and they have a great body of work. It's definitely not for everyone.

by Anonymousreply 35April 3, 2022 4:35 PM

I felt very bad for Pearl until she started violating and killing people. The scene where she dances to a ghostly distorted piano version of Oui Oui Marie was very haunting.

by Anonymousreply 36May 26, 2022 3:50 AM

I can't stand that Jenna Ortega. They need to stop shoving her down our throats. She's ugly and a bland actress.

by Anonymousreply 37May 26, 2022 3:53 AM

I have been trying to rent this but it changed to being only being able to purchase and I'm not spending 19.99, but I cant wait to see this!

by Anonymousreply 38May 26, 2022 3:58 AM

If you name your movie X you should release it NR and claim it is X rated, which doesn't exist anymore. A film named X but rated R is a let down.

by Anonymousreply 39May 26, 2022 4:00 AM

I liked it but the kills where too tightly packed in the end

by Anonymousreply 40May 26, 2022 4:05 AM

R36 agreed, there is a sad subtext to this movie about aging, youth, and nostalgia. Pearl is a pitiful, desperate character who is bitter and unhappy about how her life played out; she missed out on a lot due to circumstances outside of her control (mainly the wars, which she references to Maxine). It's rare to see something "soft" like that in a slasher movie.

by Anonymousreply 41May 26, 2022 2:28 PM

I wanted to like this movie more but West should have cast actual old people in the role of the elderly couple. The Johnny Knoxville/"Bad Grandpa" make-up was ridiculous. I also thought Brittney Snow was terrible and too hammy in her role. Her singing "Landslide" halfway into the movie was unnecessary and stupid. I didn't mind the rest of the cast, but she was awful.

by Anonymousreply 42May 26, 2022 10:34 PM

R37 I thought she was great at the end. That bloodcurdling scream made her a natural for this type of film.

by Anonymousreply 43May 26, 2022 10:40 PM

R13 innkeepers was so creepy. Loved it

by Anonymousreply 44May 26, 2022 10:43 PM

R43 I liked her too. Her hairstyle and clothing was spot-on for the '70s and she looked good in it. Definitely not ugly, and I thought she was a decent actress. This is the only thing I've seen her in but I found her quite believable for this being a slasher film.

by Anonymousreply 45May 27, 2022 1:12 AM

Mia Goth was made for horror, her personality and constantly dour facial expression makes her a natural.

by Anonymousreply 46May 27, 2022 1:25 AM

This movie was such a letdown. Hyped the high heavens as some return to form for horror, “the next Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and it was nothing of the sort. It was a grimy bloody decently good time, but at all iconic or memorable. The kills were underwhelming, and old age prosthetics were laughable and Brittany Snow can’t act. It all felt so slight, I’d forgotten about it by the time we were at dinner after leaving the theater.

by Anonymousreply 47May 27, 2022 1:35 AM

Not at all*

by Anonymousreply 48May 27, 2022 1:36 AM

I finally saw X. It was maybe a 3 star film. I thought the premise was interesting in the second half of the film. The first half really dragged. I didn't find it particularly suspenseful or sexy. Lots of jump scares. American horror films have lost their edge compared to French, Korean, and Austrian. This felt a little low-key preachy as well. Show, don't tell.

by Anonymousreply 49May 29, 2022 4:59 AM

Bad film, didn’t finish it. Enjoyed Kid Cudi’s body (not the prosthetic). Goth is a capable actress. Ti West is my baby but he let me down hard with this one.

by Anonymousreply 50May 29, 2022 5:10 AM

Brittany Snow mentioned in an interview that she was offered a sexy role about 10 years ago but was too scared to say yes. She said X was her second chance and she wanted to do it despite being scared.

by Anonymousreply 51May 29, 2022 5:12 AM

OP why would an R rated slasher movie about a porn set possibly be for kids? Duh.

by Anonymousreply 52May 29, 2022 5:12 AM

R51 good for her? She's always come off as awkward to me when it comes to being sexy.

by Anonymousreply 53May 29, 2022 6:54 AM

I thought the cast was completely fine. I liked Snow as the aging porn whore and I liked that Mia Goth's character didn't knew pure as snow (wink wink) to still be a compelling character. I would have liked more suspense in the beginning. I thought the message was solid and certainly I am sure many DLers can relate to the source of the killers madness. I would have like to see that explored a little more in the first half.

Anything A24 puts out, I am usually in. I tend to like their foreign films better. Now I am more into films distributed by Neon b/c they honor the director's cut. I just saw a film "Pleasure" that was originally going to be released by A24 but they wanted to dial it down and they switched to Neon. The next A24 I hopefully can see in the theaters tomorrow is "Men". It looks interesting.

by Anonymousreply 54May 29, 2022 2:50 PM

Whenever a horror movie doesn't get to the first kill until 40-60 minutes in, there's going to be some haters who think there needs to be a kill every 5 minutes to keep their interest. I like it when a horror movie takes a little time to get going and builds up some atmosphere and lets you interact with the characters a bit. The original Halloween is like this. Besides Michael killing his sister in the first 5 minutes, I don't think anyone else dies until nearly an hour into the movie.

by Anonymousreply 55May 29, 2022 9:16 PM

R55 I am fine with a slow burn, but there was absolutely no suspense and very little creepiness in the first half. And jump scares are cheap scares.

by Anonymousreply 56May 30, 2022 1:07 AM

The first half of this movie plays like a sex comedy, then the cast sat around having a deep discussion and Brittney Snow sang.

by Anonymousreply 57May 31, 2022 6:08 PM

[Quote] and Brittney Snow sang.

Gotta get those PP fans 😄

by Anonymousreply 58June 1, 2022 11:40 AM

I came across this on Amazon Prime the other night and watched it. I am a bit on the fence about A24 films, they often seem so pretentious and depressing, but this one was pretty enjoyable. Spoilers below:

It is a slow burn, but I don't mind that. It is shot beautifully. The scene of Maxine swimming in the lake and the alligator coming for her is seriously beautiful.

The 70s aesthetic is so much fun, it looks great and it is not overdone too much (like the movie isn't constantly screaming: "LOOK HOW 70s WE ARE!"

Kid Cudi is HOT, and I loved his body, it was a much more believable 70s in-shape male body.

Martin Henderson was so hot too when he came out in his tighty whities.

There were so many scenes I flinched in - whether it was RJ getting stabbed, Wayne stepping on the nail, Jenna Ortega's hand reaching around the door...

And best of all, the characters playing our victims were... decent people! I'm sorta over horror movies like this being inundated with douchebags. This was refreshingly different in that respect. Allowed you to care for the characters a bit more.

The one thing I wasn't totally convinced of was why Jenna Ortega suddenly wanted to do porn too. That seemed sudden. Maybe it was just to show that she was so quiet that no one knew what she really thought about everything and assumed she was judging, but still. I didn't QUITE believe that bit.

But otherwise, I enjoyed it!

by Anonymousreply 59December 6, 2022 6:38 AM

[Quote] Brittany Snow mentioned in an interview that she was offered a sexy role about 10 years ago but was too scared to say yes. She said X was her second chance and she wanted to do it despite being scared.

Well she ain't getting any younger.

[Quote] And best of all, the characters playing our victims were... decent people! I'm sorta over horror movies like this being inundated with douchebags. This was refreshingly different in that respect. Allowed you to care for the characters a bit more.

I liked that aspect too.

by Anonymousreply 60December 7, 2022 5:50 AM

I turned it off about halfway through. Nothing much was happening, I didn't care about any of the characters and it thought it was so novel and clever. Someone thought they were making a classic.

by Anonymousreply 61December 7, 2022 8:05 AM

I mean...I can't remember the last time I watched a movie as overhyped as "X." I'm REALLY not getting all of the praise. ALSO? Why are people surprised that it ONLY got an R-rating?

by Anonymousreply 62December 7, 2022 12:22 PM

I did see "Pearl" before "X" and I thought it was wayyy better. Still a slow-burn film but it's so unusual that it keeps your attention. Goth really shines in it too. West works with good cinematographers.

by Anonymousreply 63December 7, 2022 12:37 PM

Sorry, I loved X. It was one of the best horror films that I had seen in years, and actually one of the most entertaining films I have seen in years)

(I also loved Tar (no idea how to add the '), Last Night In Soho, but I thought that Barbarian was a massive disappointment..)

I am waiting to watch Pearl until Christmas.

by Anonymousreply 64December 7, 2022 12:56 PM

[quote]I am waiting to watch Pearl until Christmas.

I want to watch this but don't know where to find it yet. Hopefully it appears on streaming soon.

by Anonymousreply 65December 7, 2022 5:58 PM

Pearl has been streaming for several weeks

by Anonymousreply 66December 7, 2022 6:02 PM

Pearl is better than X, imho.

by Anonymousreply 67December 7, 2022 6:02 PM

I've never even heard of "X"... but since someone bumped this thread from last March, is it streaming anywhere? This is literally the first I've heard of this movie.

by Anonymousreply 68December 7, 2022 6:06 PM

R66, nowhere I can find it, but I'm in Australia and things seem to reach our streaming services a lot later out here. Our Netflix isn't as comprehensive even. I often hear Americans or British people say that something is on Netflix and it's never on our version.

R67, I've heard that too, and is why I really want to see it.

R68, I saw it on Amazon Prime.
