Nothing to Hide (1981) aka retro porn of the 70s/80s thread

During my usual porn hunt recently, I came across this movie from 1981. I'm not sure if you'd consider it porn or an x-rated movie, or even what the difference is, but the funny thing is, I had a fun time watching this!

Was this what porn was back in the day? Because I've always been told how cheesy it is, and I mean, this is cheesy, but it's also, like, sexy! And it's a straight movie, so that doubly surprised me, but the two male leads that the movie is about are really good looking and the one, John Leslie, is a revelation to me, that masculinity! He really does it for me. And I love his laugh after every time he cums.

I started masturbating in the age of Sean Cody and Corbin Fisher and Straight College Men. You know, those videos: "state your name and age and a bit about yourself and then start wanking", which were very exciting to me at the time, but kinda formulaic and dull, and now I've seen a couple of these real retro films from the 70s and 80s and it makes me wish this was more what porn was today. Things that appeal to me about it are:

- no crazy, unnatural angles. In this video the men and women are pressed up against each other like how it would be.

- a focus on the entire bodies when fucking. Not just penetration, but seeing the sexiness in faces, expressions, movement of the backs, legs, etc. This whole of body thing is much sexier to me. Seemed to be shared pretty evenly between men and women too.

- it also just seems a lot sweeter to me. Yeah, there are things that might be looked at as 'problematic' nowadays here, but it doesn't seem like anyone is being hurt at least.

The very final scene actually got me in the feels a bit. I love a bromance.

For something more gay, I also saw a movie recently, think it was called Score, from the 70s. Two couples switch partners, but it's a case of the men going off together and the women. The scenes with the men were very hot to me.

I also just generally have a late 70s/early 80s aesthetic fascination, so it all kinda does it for me.

For the blokes who were around then, was this the more standard type of thing people would see at the time? And do you have any other recommendations?

70s and 80s straight porn is so much hotter than what is put out today.

John Leslie was effortlessly masculine and that is relatively rare in straight porn and especially gay porn (although many try hard, and fail). He really got the psychology behind sex and could really get the women he worked with into the sex. He could also act, when feeling motivated. I have seen mainstream press compare him to Al Pacino and Rudolph Valentino.

I'd recommend Talk Dirty To Me parts 1 ( Nothing to Hide was an unofficial sequel to this movie) and 2, Exposed (1980), The Other Side Of Julie (1978), Intimate Desires (1977), Outlaw Ladies (1981), The Dancers (1980), "F" . . .and lots of it (1980), and Bad Girls (1981) for more John Leslie at his best.

Straight porn from the '70s is fun to watch because it had a plot and often decent acting from the leads. As discussed in other threads, many porn stars from this era had legit performing backgrounds (ex: Andrea True, Dolly Sharp/Helen Wood, Georgina Spelvin, and Zebedy Colt).

[quote]John Leslie was effortlessly masculine

This is perfectly put. He's not trying to be masculine, it's just completely natural to him and that makes it so damned attractive. And it works so well in Nothing to Hide, because it's also about his love for his best friend.

Everyone varies in what they're looking for, so YMMV; but in my experience, by and large, is that porn of the 70s and 80s usually has a more spontaneous, more "real," feel to it. The models/actors are less thoroughly "perfect," and so it is easier to personally identify/empathize with them and to share vicariously in what is going on. They usually at least seem to be doing their antics out of their own feelings of the moment, and so the routines vary, rather than today's artificial atmosphere of being tightly controlled. Today's models/actors--sure, they're very attractive and wonderfully built, but in a cookie-cutter way, everyone straining to fulfill to a greater or lesser degree one or another of half a dozen types. In 70s and 80s porn (and earlier!), the participants' personalities came through better, and they often seemed to be authentically enjoying themselves in a real "non-acting" way; today, I don't see much of that kind of authenticity. The one big down side to old porn is the frequent cheesy music (I'd rather hear the grunts, whimpers, and moans, thank you very much). Sure, current technology has made the current crop miles ahead as far as technology goes; but I think a lot of the feeling of genuineness and actor/viewer connection in the overall experience has gone by the wayside.

Why are we posting straight porn on a gay website?

This is how a lot of us got to watch porn back in those days.

I meant to ask, what was that experience like?

by Anonymousreply 16June 5, 2022 6:24 AM

I'd be afraid to imagine what he used to stick the clips together
