Cheryl is the type of gal that will cheerfully help her partner search for the missing stash of chocolate, knowing full damn well it will never be found.

Around the term of the millennium, when NSYNC was huge in the music world, there was a self-identified poster named Cheryl on DL who always insisted that Lance Bass of that group (who was then in the closet) was straight. If you disagreed with her, she would get angry and insist that the moderator ban whomever disagreed with her.

This was long before the moderator was popularly known here as Muriel, and Cheryl for some reason would always call him "Editor": "Editor, please ban rXX who says Lance Bass is straight."

People grew to loathe Cheryl almost immediately, but she only got chased out finally when another poster started following up every one of Cheryl's posts by stating, "Cheryl's pussy stinks!" and signed his posts "Iola." The posters on DL went wild.

Cheryl disappeared soon after, but three legends about Cheryl were born:

1) That she is the original for all DL self-appointed-sheriffs and tattletales who want Muriel to ban people with whom they disagree;

2) that she is the original for all women who have zero gaydar, and who always argue that the most obviously closeted celebrities in the world are really straight; and

3) that she basically has the worst feminine hygiene in the world, and so embodies all gay men's fears of the vagina.

For years these would circulate as constant in-jokes on DL, such that one of the first pieces of DL swag Mediapolis produced was a t-shirt with a big "HELLO, MY NAME IS" tag reproduced over the heart with Cheryl's name written below the lettering. (At a public speaking event in NY, the men who ran Mediapolis swore that almost every poster at the time had posted as Cheryl at one time or another.)

Like all Datalounge running gags it gone run into the ground and then some for years and years, and finally fell out of fashion.
