Why is this?
So many clearly mentally ill people identify as autistic

I think it’s the ultimate excuse that is above scrutiny.

Everyone wants to claim a misunderstood or marginalized identity (or three or four, on social media) for themselves and then scold others for being insensitive or unaccommodating. Which is bleakly funny when they're committing the ultimate insensitive act themselves by appropriating an experience that isn't theirs.
I've noticed a lot of the self-identified "#actuallyautistic" people on Twitter also claim to be "zebras" with rare physical illnesses (generally self-diagnosed, like the autism). They often have weirdly convoluted sexual identities as well. They're desperate to be the most unique person in the room.

[quote]Why is this?
Probably for the same reason that so many mentally deficient trolls post repetetive autism threads.

Mental illnesses usually have effective treatments, while autism is incurable. It's an excuse to act however they want and not have to work to change and become healthier, because autism is "just a neurological difference."
That said, I've read that it's very common for people diagnosed with autism to have comorbid mental illnesses. I'm sure some of those people do have both.

every group ends up with it's hijackers.
the hijackers are emboldened by negative attention
particularly when that attention comes from their fanatical opposition.
and, both groups require the the other to thrive.
like roaches, they'll survive just about anything.
of course, they get positive attention too
as with the negative, they have to continually up their claims in order to remain relevant.
Autism's most recent fad (former have been Rain Man, as an example) as a result of a sociopolitical campaign to bring awareness to girls with autism as many were upset that males are diagnosed more frequently as the result of having a higher percentage to develop severe symptoms... and thus many of organizations events were focused on raising funds for the worst in their community. So, it quickly evolved from being a feminist act to an intersectioal social justice cause to claims that self diagnoses are the only legit diagnoses because the medical establishment and these organizations were white and patriarchal... and quickly moved into protesting the organizations (like AutismSpeaks) for even showcasing the more severe cases when so many self diagnosis as neurodivergent with superpowers like hand flapping, fidget spinners and throwing trash cans at their campus windows because having autism means never having to be accountable for your own actions.

Bare with me here the paragraph will come around to the subject. My buddy is diagnosed with schizophrenia which allows him to receive money. He doesn't have to work. He Has never worked a real job. He however managed to make money as a farmer. He used the money to invest in real estate. He flipped a house in Cali and made a ton. He went to Asia to do drugs and chase underage sex opportunities. He had to beg for an airline ticket home two years later. Cambodian police were about to Jail him he claimed. He is back now and weirder than ever. He now also has claims Morgellens disease according to himself and is a "targeted individual." He is constantly trying to convince me of hairs growing out of his skin. Scaler waves, Aircraft spraying etc... into the atmosphere to change the weather. His illness and conspiracy is all he talks about and won't change the subject. My point here is when does mental illness recuse one from the responsibilities in life. He was able to Buy and flip a home Travel and pursue his interests just fine. When it comes to everyday taking care of himself he is Mentally ill and needs the support of our tax dollars.

Interesting thread. I think I have schizoid-type issues going on. And yeah, there’s a lot of shame and embarrassment. I do feel like Autism would be less embarrassing somehow. You get more sympathy from people with Autism.
