France's costume makes no sense. I can't see any cultural reference at all. Cuba's choice is odd since every other contestants are going for cultural pieces while he's in a casual outfit. USA should have gone for a superhero costume of some sort, I think.

Many of the costumes/outfits are working at reflecting back upon a pre-colonial time or the post-colonial time when native cultures had adapted to the new regime with clothes that fit the new regime in a country. So some South American contestants have outfits that reflect something of Spain/flamenco. The Asian guys have outfits that reach back further but are modernized. I like a lot of them.

The guy from the US could have gone with a19th century western cowboy look, he could have gone with a mid-20th century union worker (steel industry, building construction) look. He could not wear native American - cultural appropriation and all of that.

Instead, a others have noted, he went with a mass-up of Statue of Liberty, super hero and drag queen. Not good.
