Frosted with buttercream and finished with chocolate chips, this confection is so good you don’t need a special occasion to bake it, the writer says.
The milk-and-cookies cake Roxane Gay swears by
by Anonymous | reply 117 | April 9, 2023 2:03 PM |
The recipe is NOT FOR EVERYONE. If you are a white man, PLEASE DO NOT FOLLOW IT.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 16, 2022 6:42 PM |
Gay resists thinking of cake, or any food for that matter, as a “guilty pleasure.” The writer, who, with its subtitle, described her best-selling 2017 book, “Hunger,” as “A Memoir of (My) Body,” has worked with her nutritionist to [bold]“separate value judgments from food,”[/bold] she said. “She’s a big proponent of intuitive eating, which I find to be a very useful framework,” Gay explained. “[bold]Very broadly, it means you eat what you want.[/bold] And you only eat until you’re full, and then you stop. That way you never feel deprived and you don’t overindulge, and you trust your body when it tells you what it wants or needs. I think it’s just a very sane way of thinking about food.”
Her body is a testament to that philosophy.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 16, 2022 6:48 PM |
As for the cakes themselves, Gay has been studiously taste-testing different recipes over the past two years. She’s even developed a few of her own, including those for a “coffee/cake” (brown sugar layer cake, mocha buttercream filling, vanilla buttercream frosting) as well as a “blueberry pancakes” confection (vanilla cake, blueberry cream cheese filling, maple buttercream frosting). “Those are going in my imaginary cookbook,” Gay said.
So many sugary buttercream options to shove down her gullet!

Her smile is creepy, I never noticed that before.

At their tasteful Omaha home, which they decorated herself, I met the lovely internationally renowned Twitter scold , Roxane Gay . . .
"I love to eat everything. There's nothing I like better than stuffing my pie-hole."
Roxane nibbled a humble cake and gulped down a gallon of sweet tea.
"I like to eat my weight in food ."
It's hard to believe that Roxane is weighs 500lbs She looks so thin….so thin….thin….
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 16, 2022 8:20 PM |
"I only eat until I feel full. I trust (my) body. Because I am an empowered woman, public intellectual, and highly influential influencer. Yes, I never actually feel full, but I'm one of the lucky few who never gain weight, no matter how much I never actually feel full."

Should DL's fat whores rebrand as "intuitive eaters"??
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 17, 2022 6:24 AM |
That intuitive eating thing is so weird, but it's probably meant for people who eat healthy food. Sugary, processed food is designed to not fill people up, but clearly Roxane heard "eat all you can stomach" and ran with it!
I laughed at her refusing to name Amazon, because it's like, if you have a problem with them, why bring them up at all? It seems very on brand for her.

R22, that is a good question!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 17, 2022 8:38 AM |
I really don't get the point of the Times' Roxane Gay cooking series. She's not a professional chef and she's not the creator of these recipes; as she herself admits, they're borrowed from elsewhere, and she makes only the slightest adjustments to them. And though she is famous for her writing, she doesn't write these pieces, either.
Does the Times think that Gay has some sort of irrestible charisma that will cause aspirational readers to flock to this series? Or that the Roxane Gay brand is so powerful that it doesn't matter that they're promoting her for doing something (cooking) for which she has no particular talent or expertise?
And yeah, there's the weight thing. A big part of what professional foodies and chefs are selling are an image and a brand. And while it's not exactly off-brand for a professional cook to be overweight (see: Julia Child and many others), being several hundred pounds overweight, as Gay is, is something else altogether. Do they think that readers looking for tasty, reasonably healthy recipes are going to ignore the hyperobesity of the person promoting them?
I just don't get it and I don't see why the Times seems to think this woman is so dazzling. Even her writing is boring and mediocre, but at least there's a proven audience for that (several of her books have been best-sellers). But the marketplace for professional cooks and food writers is already oversaturated with countless others who are far more skilled and creative at it than Roxane Gay is.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 17, 2022 8:53 AM |
I continue to subscribe to the Times because of its up-to-date coverage of the war in Ukraine. I also like its more reasonable conservative columnists. I re-subscribed after years of not during the Covid lockdown. Before I got free access at work.
But...I continually feel it, and the elite it represents and who run it, have lost their collective minds. I simply don't understand the reason for a column like this.

I totally agree, and think the same every time I see her cooking for the Times. Plus, she doesn't ever seem that excited or interested in doing it. She was marginally more enthusiastic in this one, but the one where she made tomato soup and toasted cheese she just seemed miserable.
The whole thing is very odd.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 17, 2022 9:44 AM |
Her smile is definitely sinister, R4. Looking at the smile, I imagine that she's laced the cake with arsenic and mixed in a few dozen needles and will now serve the cake to her local branch of the Republican Party.

by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 17, 2022 10:46 AM |
That intuitive eating thing is so weird, but it's probably meant for people who eat healthy food.
Oh it absolutely is, definitely. I remember it being a big thing for a while in the 1990s, and I'm about Roxane's age so I'm sure that's when she first heard it, too, but it was never about eating cookies 'n' cream cake "intuitively," it was about making reasonably decent choices and eating until you were full.
There was also talk along with it about how some people had been shown in studies to just never feel full, which today is known as leptin resistance but didn't have a name back then, if I recall.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 17, 2022 10:48 AM |
LMAO. The way she spun "intuitive eating" (a largely very healthy practice to moderate weight and food issues) and twisted it to mean she's listening to her body (and her body wants to stuff itself with cake)............... The Times ain't shit for keeping that in and embarrassing her like that!!!! Dead.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 17, 2022 10:57 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 17, 2022 11:15 AM |
She's a personality that starts conversations, and it's pretty obvious that what r32 describes is part of why the NYT likes her. They know people are reading these articles to laugh at this 300-lbs woman saying she eats a 12-lbs cake "intuitively."

by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 17, 2022 11:44 AM |
^ The best thing about that apron is the fact that the sloping bits (coming down from the neck) on either side are meant to go under each arm but, in Roxane's case, the slope is on her enormous chest.

HAES is very cult-like.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 17, 2022 12:07 PM |
Intuitive eating would work a charm if we didn't live in our modern world of abundance. We have every kind of processed, carb laden, sugary food available 24/7. And these foods are highly addictive for many (most?) people. Where does intuition lead you when you have a bag of chips or a carton of Ben and Jerry's in front of you. For many people, "intuition" tells them to eat the whole damn thing.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 17, 2022 12:09 PM |
The recipe below, apart from Gay’s adjustments, which are italicized, is a lightly edited reproduction of the original, which can be found in Huff’s book “Icing on the Cake” [Abrams, 2019].)
So Gay is "presenting" a recipe that's actually by Tessa Huff, a white woman. Imagine the backlash if a white woman had a NYT series that was her presenting recipes actually created by a black woman.

“Not a professional chef” and “not the creator of these recipes” describes large numbers of the people the people who work or are in someway active in food media. People enjoy hearing from home cooks. There’s literally a very popular show called the “worst cooks in America.”
As far as borrowing recipes; even professional chefs talk about their influences and tweaking the recipes of others. They don’t create a new original recipe every time they cook.

Haha, yeah not likely, R77. Each time she comes out here she makes insensitive comments, so not sure she's well liked among those who have actually heard of her (which isn't many, I don't think). She was here for a debate awhile back with someone on the other side of the political spectrum from her and Roxane came off so badly that her people started threatening the people running the debate not to make the debate public, or something. Mostly because Roxane wasn't able to do much more than sigh loudly and act exhausted at what the other woman was saying, in lieu of actually having any argument.

She made her own in this case, R103, but it clearly EXHAUSTED her. It also didn’t look that appealing, to be honest, and I love cake. I think it’s because I’ve been learning the techniques to bake properly, including making proper buttercream, and she was just dumping everything in in a way that looked kinda off-putting and like it probably wouldn’t turn out as well, therefore tasting kinda gross.

Also, American buttercream is so hideously sweet (so of course she’d use it).
