R22 Cleopatra, just as R23 said. Even R36’s Queen Elizabeth I is solid but weak compared to Cleopatra. We’re talking the most famous, not the most important.
She’s taught in school, she’s a popular Halloween costume for every generation, she represents beauty. She’s like the ancient Marilyn Monroe - there’s tons of beauty products and hair salons and etc named after her. Her name can be basically used as a noun to describe beauty. Her name represents the most beautiful woman in the world.
Cleopatra is historical but mythical and she transcends race. She can be depicted as any color (except Asian I guess but you can still be an Asian Cleopatra). The only person besides that is Jesus.
Princess Diana and Madonna are very famous 1980’s figures. Will they still be known 2,000 years from now?

In 1986, I was in the Old City of Jerusalem with a friend. We were in a church museum being guided by an Orthodox monk (if memory serves me Greek Orthodox). He was struggling with the English word for "crown." My friend, trying to be helpful, said "Crown, like what Princess Diana, would wear?" And the Monk, said "Who is that?." So not everyone knew or knows who Princess Diana was. Although, as the daughter in law of Prince Phillip of Greece, perhaps, it is surprising he didn't know, if he was indeed Greek Orthodox. And I woild hazard a guess that there are many generation Z kids who don't who Princess Diana was either.

In the history of the world so far, who is the best known woman (adding together all people who have ever known about her)? Clearly the Virgin Mary.
While the woman was alive, who was known by the most people in the world at one given moment? Likely Princess Diana at the height of her fame, given the history of mass media and the world population.

Well maybe, r59, but even at the height of her fame, Princess Diana was still probably less famous worldwide, throughout the old Empire, than Queen Elizabeth II. And of course, Princess Diana was only famous in large part because she was married to the son of Elizabeth II. No Elizabeth, no Diana.
As for the Virgin Mary, well that gets us into myths and legends. Would Aphrodite count as most famous woman? Would Helen of Troy? Would some goddess in China or India? Kali had one hell of a cult going on, once upon a time.

One thing in Mary's favor: Islam does have a place for Jesus, and his mother, so there is that.

Virgin Mary is kind of mythical just like Jesus. We know these people existed but who they are has been heavily fictionalized.
From what I’m aware of, Mary was a hard core Jew and was cut out of Paul’s remix of Jesus’ Christianity and they didn’t get along. She sided with Jesus’ older brother James who was also crucified.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | March 15, 2022 3:30 AM |
But to pile onto Cleopatra, she was enemies with Herod the Great who’s in the Bible during the birth of Jesus and Mary’s flee to Egypt.
Cleopatra isn’t in the Bible but her family is.
Also July = Julis Caesar, her baby daddy August = Augustus. The month was named after him because of Cleopatra’s suicide and Rome’s takeover of Egypt.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | March 15, 2022 3:35 AM |
And there’s also no doubt Cleopatra played a role in the calendar. Although it’s never specified, we know she brought an astronomer to Rome with her when Rome had the longest year and Caesar made leap year which came from the Egyptian calendar.

What is funny about the calendar is to this day it is kind of all wrong. September actually means, Seventh Month. October means eighth month. But because of July and August, it is all still fucked up, and nobody is going to do anything about it, maybe forever.

I’m just saying, two historical figures that influenced the calendar were 2 major figures in her story.

Alexander the king met him, and Ptol′emy gave him Cleopatra his daughter in marriage, and celebrated her wedding at Ptolema′is with great pomp, as kings do. -- (1 Maccabees 10:57-58)

That is an interesting myth, but it is a myth r111. The idea is that Ptolemy II (I think) invited 70 Rabbis to his palace to translate the Pentateuch into Egyptian. They were all sent into separate rooms to translate the scriptures into Egyptian by themselves. When they all emerged, all the translations were exactly alike and this became the Septuagint (70) translation of the Bible. I think you and I and everyone can see this is bullshit, but it's a fun story.

After this lengthy discussion of Jesus, Mary, Cleopatra, Caesar, Herod, and the Bible on a gay discussion board, I have determined the following:
Elizabeth Taylor ate a Caesar salad at Harrods Department Store with some queen named Mary who’s professional name is spelled Hey Zeus but pronounced like Jesus.
During this lunch, a bet was made on a Bible that Elizabeth couldn’t swallow a whole Greek Calzone m in under 2 minutes. She accepted the challenge and easily won. As a result, she became the world’s most famous woman because she was able to swallow a Greek sausage from a queer Spanish man in a London store owned by an Arab who killed Princess Die.

The Virgin Mary is the most enduring, just like her son who is the most famous man. But because their historicity is somewhat fudgy, I go for a top five list of female rulers who dominated their eras:
1. Cleopatra - Undisputed winner of historically documented women, in my opinion. Universally famous to this day and the name just rolls of the tongue worldwide.
2. Catherine the Great - long reign where she dominated, conquered and terrified a large part of the world. She, more than Peter the Great is responsible for the West's perennial view of Russia as a potential threat to be feared and antagonised. I
3. Queen Elizabeth II - Most famous woman alive. Famous now for just being there. We live in an Anglo-dominated world thanks to the English language and the United States, but Elizabeth hasn't done anything of particular of historical significance so it's doubtful she'll endure past her death like the other two, she hasn't changed or affected the course of history in any way so even history books will only mention her in passing. I think she's in danger of being overtaken by Mother Teresa in the next decade.
Others don't really cut it:
A few examples: Isabel of Spain has been celebrated for ridding Europe of Islamic invaders but I don't think she's universally famous. Joan of Arc is only ubiquitously famous only in France. Princess Diana is just a celebrity and only widely famous in English-speaking countries. Marilyn Monroe is possibly a more enduring celebrity than Diana but her fame is similarly localised in the United States and the world of cinema. Elizabeth I is a case of the English thinking their monarchs are world-famous when she's mostly only a British phenomenon. I expect Elizabeth II to end up like her. Same as Elizabeth of Russia who was historically important, but only widely known to Russians, which is largely the case for most female sovereigns.

R136 - R123 here - I know about Pickford, and argued for her on that thread, I was just being snarky. Looked at in a certain way she’s definitely a contender for the nebulous contest in this thread.
As one of the very first movie stars know by name, and far and away the most popular actress of that era, she had a type of worldwide fame completely different and far larger than anyone before her, ever. And it was truly worldwide; beyond just the Western Culture portion of the globe because silent films were screened everywhere and could be understood by everyone.
At the height of her fame she was arguably recognizable by a larger percentage of the world’s population than any woman before or since (if you stick to percentages, not gross numbers since population keeps growing).
And, except for people who are really interested in film history, or history in general, she is almost completely forgotten today. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi.

Honestly, would they? There may be people in the future who are interested in old cultural figures. But at some point, doesn't everybody become Lillie Langtry or Jennie Lind? I loathe her but Margaret Thatcher was the most famous woman in the 80s. Even more than Queen Elizabeth II and DL fave Madonna.
by Anonymous | reply 214 | March 16, 2022 1:35 AM |
Definitely Americans are still very much fascinated by everything Tudor r212, and for now, we still decide a whole lot of entertainment around the world. And Marie Antoinette? Yes, absolutely. Tragic Queen (whether you really believe that or not) is still very much a thing in the U.S. entertainment business, which is of course the World Entertainment Business. This all is very much subject to change, but yes, these two are very much queens that the world still cares about. Seriously, think of it this way: go into a studio and try to sell a script about some historical figure. It may seem silly, but it is still part of the deal here.
I will say, Catherine lately has come into her own, but that is relatively new and recent.

If we're going with women who have a definite historical record (sorry Mary), then Cleopatra VII would be #1. More than 2000 years later and she's still known around the world.
#2 would be Marilyn Monroe. About 22 years ago, two authors counted the total number of Marilyn biographies and the figure they got was over 300 in English alone, not including books written in other languages. New books about Marilyn are published nearly every year. Princess Diana, QEII, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor do not get the same amount of attention from writers. Travelers have said that no matter where you go in the world, you can find Marilyn's image displayed in some city or town. Kids are familiar with her face. The same can't be said for Taylor, Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, and Madonna.

r254 and r256 are indeed stupid:
Yeshua (Hebrew/Aramaic) = Jesus (Greek) = Iesus (Latin) = Isa (Arabic) = Gesù (Italian) = Jesús (Spanish) = Jezus (Dutch) = Iso (Irish) = Yesu (Swahili) and so on. Just like:
Johanan (Hebrew) = Ioannes (Latin) = Giannis (Greek) = Yahya (Arabic) = John (English) = Jean (French) = Juan (Spanish) = Hans (German) = Sean (Irish) = Ivan (Russian) = Jan (Polish) = Ian (Scottish Gaelic) = Gianni/Giovanni (Italian)
"Jesus" is just the Greek and English translation of "Yeshua"

Yes, she lived. Jesus also lived. People can argue about whether she was a virgin or not when she conceived Jesus, but not that she lived. She was a real woman. You can argue that Jesus was or was not a virgin, if you wanna, but he lived. Was he the Messiah? That's debatable. He lived and he had a mother.

R285 Yes, which is why I say Mary is somewhat mythical. She did exist but not in the context of her legacy. But the same goes for Jesus.
From what I’m aware of, Paul the Apostle distorted and remixed Jesus’ teachings after his death and took over Christianity and most of Jesus’ crew sided with James the Just, his older brother, who was eventually crucified as well. If I’m not mistaken, Paul didn’t even like Jesus when he was alive.
I think Jesus was more of a Gandhi figure in his life and after he died, he became a God figure like a lot of leaders did.
Most leaders claims descent of a God. Going back to Cleopatra, she claimed she was Isis. Mark Anthony claimed descent from Hercules, Caesar I believe was Venus. It was all political.
Historians say Cleopatra and her family were probably atheists. Cleopatra (and the Ptolemies) made sure the Greeks, the Egyptians, and the Jews had freedom of religion in Egypt.

The thing about history from back then…
I learned this from reading about Cleopatra
A lot of these records were written a long time after they died - both Jesus and Cleopatra.
And writing history wasn’t all about telling the truth.
But the writers got the information from direct sources. So for example, Cleopatra’s last days were most likely documented by Olympos who was her physician. That’s probably why we know she got an infection on her chest in the days before she died. But every writer has a different account about her behavior. Plutarch said her meeting with Octavian was dignified and Dio says she was desperate and far gone.
I also believe we know Charmion’s (one of the women she died with) last words were legit too.
But Jesus’ story has been distorted with a lot of supernatural and mythical stuff that it’s hard to believe what is really true.
“The messengers came at full speed, and found the guards apprehensive of nothing; but on opening the doors, they saw her stone-dead, lying upon a bed of gold, set out in all her royal ornaments. Iras, one of her women, lay dying at her feet, and Charmion, just ready to fall, scarce able to hold up her head, was adjusting her mistress's diadem. And when one that came in said angrily, "Was this well done of your lady, Charmion?" "Extremely well," she answered, "and as became the descendant of so many kings"; and as she said this, she fell down dead by the bedside.”

Joan Crawford not only knew about her, but would have gone back in time to try and fuck her, if only time machines had been available starting in 1920. Britney Spears knows about her, and given the chance, would probably try and fuck her too. Madonna name-checks her in a song (would also try to fuck her, etc.), and so on and so forth.

[quote]Her name represents the most beautiful woman in the world.
The real Cleopatra was actually quite plain, at least by our standards. To what extent she actually bewitched Caesar and Marc Antony, and to what extent their liaisons were political arrangements on both sides, is not clear. She may have been charismatic, but there are pictures of her (on coins and amid inscriptions) and she was no Liz Taylor. More Barbra Streisand.
Lots of people are being confused by the fact that Cleopatra was quite a common name at the time. Alexander the Great's father Philip's second [Macedonian] wife was called Cleopatra: they were married when the original Ptolemy (who was rumored to be Philip's illegitimate son by the DL of the day) was probably in his late 20s. The original Ptolemy was one of Alexander's generals and was the one who took over Egypt upon Alexander's untimely death. The Cleopatra you're all talking about was descended from him.
Whether she's the most famous woman ever would depend on how well known she is in China and India (excluding the Virgin Mary). If she's not, then the answer is probably someone who has lived in the time of mass media. (Unless Britney Spears was being googled by China and India as well as the West, R340, she's not the most famous. Being the most popular among western 15-year-olds does not = that.)
An irony is that the person who SHOULD be the most famous in the entire world right now is unknown to practically everyone, and that's Tim Berners-Lee. If you don't know who he is, google him and blush. It makes you wonder how many other people in history have been massively influential without being very well known, and it's probably more likely more women fall into that category than men.

I don't know about forever, but during her lifetime (until she was 35), Mary Pickford was the most famous person in the world. Silent movies were much more international than later sound movies. When Mary and Douglas Fairbanks married, they traveled by ship to London for the honeymoon, and when they got off the ship, there were 100,000 fans waiting on the dock to greet her. Quite literally the world's first superstar actor, far outshining Chaplin and Keaton at the time.

Oh, dear. *are
Now let's correct the statement. There are no [italic]surviving[/italic] records of his existence, except for his followers who became very well known. Judaism has had any number of Messiahs over the centuries. This one caught on. Almost all scholars agree he existed. They understand acknowledging his existence doesn't mean they believe he is the son of God. Why can't you?

He's not the only source. There are Egyptian coins from her lifetime, inscriptions about her, etc. She was one of the Ptolemaic dynasty and we know what number she is within it. It's like asking how we know Queen Elizabeth I existed.
