Red Wine and Deep Vein Thrombosis

Anyone have DVT? If so, how do you deal with it? Does Red Wine work as a remedy? What kind of red wine, odest price Cabernet, etc? Not much of a wine drinker here, so asking... Also, DVT folks, what is your day to day life like while experiencing it? Just seeking personal experiences. Thanks.

I had DVTs twice, years ago. I have to inject Lovenox every day to ensure I don't get any more. Never heard about the red wine theory.

And were you diagnosed while perusing Two Buck Chuck at Trader Joe’s?

Had a pulmonary embolism a few years ago. Had to take Eloquis for 6 months afterward. Now when I travel by car or plane, I prep by taking aspirin a day or two before and the day of travel. I also wear compression socks on planes for longer flights and in car trips, stop every hour and a half to stretch my legs and walk. For me, I was lucky that my PE was “provoked” by certain things and I have been in generally good health.

Research on alcohol and DVTs is mixed at best, so I just didn’t drink alcohol while I took Eliquis. There’s no definitive research that says wine is an effective blood thinner. Same for fish oil on its own, Vitamin E, etc. Some supplements may possibly enhance the effect of blood thinners but are ineffective on their own. Aspirin has a proven mild blood thinning effect, so some people take a baby aspirin every day (I choose not to, but will take aspirin as needed if I sit too long).

Sorry for being glib, OP.

Sounds like you’re doing all the right things, especially the baby aspirin as needed.

I'm on Xeralto for the rest of my life. A year ago the doctor took me off it and six months later I ended up in the hospital for a second time. Red wine was never suggested as a cure, actually they advise against alcohol if you're on blood thinners. Sometimes people just die if the clot reaches the lungs or heart. There is very little notice. The clots can do permanent damage to the veins.
